The T-Shirt Dress for Any Age: With a Shirt Underneath

Quote of the day: “Your problem isn’t the problem. Your reaction is the problem.” Anonymous

Transitioning your warm weather clothing is not a new topic for any blogger or magazine. I remember seeing it done in the fashion pages of many of the magazines I would read growing up. But back then, I thought it was quite silly. In my head, I thought you should just have winter items and summer items. Needless to say, I’ve learned that it can be fun to transform our clothing from one season to another. How do you feel about this concept?

In the first post about these t-shirt dresses, we went with a heavier layer over it here. Thus I figured we could layer under it just as easily! I even went to the trouble of making sure the 3 of us each wore a different item under our dresses. I wore a long sleeve t-shirt, Nancy wore a collared blouse, and mom wore a turtleneck! That should be enough variety to make everyone happy–ha ha!

Jodie’s (50’s) Outfit: There are more than one of these burgundyish, long sleeve t-shirts in my closet that I bought super cheap from the LOFT years ago. I used to wear them under my sleeveless shirts and blazers at the workplace! It’s true that the color doesn’t match the purple in the dress, but I thought it still worked?

I’ve been noticing these mirrored sunglasses on more and more people, and for some reason, I just love the look! Of course, it also provides the perfect camouflage for a no makeup day (besides, lipstick)! If you think you need a pair, I signed up as an affiliate just so I could offer my readers a 10% discount. The jade earrings were a gift from my mom when she visited Hong Kong. I think it’s even jade (or something that looks like it) on the necklace. This necklace had actually broken a couple of years ago. Luckily I held onto it, because I finally figured out I could put velcro on the ends to fasten it!

It’s  true that I needed another pair of booties like I needed another hole in my head. But I do have to admit, that I saw these on 2 previous occasions and didn’t buy them at those times. So I figured, if I was still wanting them on the third look, that maybe I really did need them? Besides, isn’t plum a neutral? LOL!

Nancy’s (60’s) Outfit: For Nancy’s shirt under her dress, I picked out her white, button down blouse! Next week, we’ll be doing an entire series on this iconic blouse since I’m sure most of us have at least one!

Nancy chose the burgundy shoes to go with the outfit and added in her burgundy necklace. This was all her doing as she didn’t know what I had put together for my look. But isn’t it funny how we are kinda twinsies in the color palette?

Her earrings have both a burgundy color in them and a black, so that’s where the idea for the black bracelet came from.

It is quite surprising to me how “smart” this outfit looked. I seriously could imagine it being worn in a work environment even though it’s a t-shirt dress. I think part of that is the button up blouse and the shoes?? So maybe many of our “casual” items really could be worn to work!

Charlotte’s (70’s) Outfit: I figured that my mom would feel more comfortable with a turtleneck under her dress because she is always cold like I am!

I realize that many of you may not have such a variety of colored boots like these green ones. But I think that any neutral boot (like the brown ones that Nancy wore in the last post) could be great with a striped dress.

Again, I practiced some restraint and only accessorized with earrings,  for mom’s outfit. My rationale was only because the boots and dress were so colorful, that maybe we should not overdo it on the bling. So I picked out some silver earrings, yet they aren’t boring or anything!!

I had to include this amusing photo of mom!! We certainly aren’t professional models, so I’ve been trying to get us to have more fun with this picture taking, instead of feeling somewhat uncomfortable with the process! Doesn’t this just make you smile?

    • Jodie Filogomo

I’m so glad to hear you say that Laurie!! Thanks!!

  • Rina Doria

It’s amazing how different each of these looks turned out just by changing the shirt you paired it with underneath. It’s a hard pick but I Think I love the middle one the best, I’ve been really loving shirts tucked under sweaters lately!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Funny you say this Carrie, because Nancy and I were just talking about this exact same subject this morning when we were taking blog photos! We do tend to pose the same way and even though I tell her to move around—it feels so weird!! Maybe we need to have a conference with someday and one of the classes should be all about this??
Happy Thursday and thanks for always visiting!!

  • Terri Webster Schrandt

These really look fab and I love the plum booties!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Ahhhh….I guess I should have explained that better, Nancy! It’s obvious to me because I know these dresses so well–ha ha!!
      Thanks for your wonderful thoughts!!

  • Your whole blog makes me smile! All of you are so lovely. I love the idea of trying different things to transition clothing – I need to do more of this in my own closet.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Oh, Lana!! What a fabulous comment to read! Thanks for saying that!!
This transitional outfiting is still a hard one for me—but I’m hoping the more I do it, the easier it will become!!

  • writeofthemiddle

My favourite things here are your boots and Charlotte’s boots! #TeamLovinLife

    • Jodie Filogomo

So you’re a fan of colorful boots, Min? I’ve only just started buying boots that aren’t black, brown or grey! And it makes me wonder, why I waited so long??
      Thanks for stopping by!!

  • Judy Gramith

What a terrific post! I like all of your looks
and the creative way you each wore different types of “undershirts.” Your accessories are great and the colorful heels and boots/booties worked so well!
Charlotte’s last pose is so genuine and endearing and yes it made me smile big time!!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks for such a positive comment, Jude!!
I think it’s hard for my mom to relax when we take these photos—I can get her talking up a storm but to play around is a different animal!! But she’s starting to be more playful—I think seeing the fun photos are the best—so I’ll keep working on her!!

  • Most of my dresses are transitional, that way I get more wear out of them. Coincidently, I have a T-shirt dress coming up soon that I wear all through the seasons. The photos are already taken. You ladies look lovely in stripes. I would love to see a photo of the three of you altogether! 🙂

    ❤️carmen

    • Jodie Filogomo

That shows what a smart woman you are, Carmen. I guess I wasn’t brought up to make my clothing transitional, so this has been definitely hard for me!!
If you want to email me a photo of your t-dress outfit, I can include it in the post that goes out tomorrow?? I always love including other women wearing the same thing!!
As for our photo of us together—there are 2 of them on our about page (http://www.jtouchofstyle.com/about/) if that helps!!

      • Thank you Jodie! I just saw your reply. How sweet of you to include my T-shirt dress! ❤️

  • What a brilliant idea. I’ve never thought of doing this. Your suggestions are great – It’s a perfect solution to hide batwing arms 🙂 #teamlovinlife

    • Jodie Filogomo

How funny that you said this Johanna!! That’s why my mom made her dress with the longer sleeves in the first place!! But you have great arms!!

  • I’m in love with the boots and shoes more than the dress – and don’t get me started on mirrored sunnies! I bought myself a pair a year or so ago (even thoug I felt like I was being a bit ‘mutton dressed up as lamb) and I love them – they make me feel so cool 🙂

    • Jodie Filogomo

I so know how you feel about these sunglasses—I even wonder—do I look as cool as I feel??? Isn’t it quite amazing that a pair of glasses can make us feel this way??
      Thanks for the love, Leanne!!

  • Oh, you ladies all match so well! I love it! And I am all for transitioning summer pieces into winter. And I really like the way the new layout of your site looks! Great job!

  • From the first post I couldn’t tell how different all your dresses were, but now I’m really impressed that your mom styled three totally unique pieces from the same material.

I used to always love when Lucky Mag did the “wear it now, wear it later” posts, even if I usually thought I’d be way too cold in whatever the colder weather look was, haha.

    • Jodie Filogomo

  • Laura

All of your shoes compliment your outfits so well! I love adding sleeves as a way to mix up layering underneath dresses. You all look wonderful!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Laura!!
What does that say when we all have so many pairs of shoes?? Obsession? ha ha!!

  • All your dresses are so cute! I love Charlottes with the contrasting sleeves!!! I am going to get my sewing machine out! I have seen so many things ladies are making. I can sew simple things and it is fun! I have those same booties as you do in brown and they are my favorites. I regret not getting them in more colors because they are so comfortable!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I didn’t know that you sewed Cheryl??!! I, myself, don’t actually sew clothes, but I’ve gotten way better at altering them myself. It really makes shopping so much more freeing, knowing that I can fix the items easily!!
I do love these boots—it’s nice because the heel isn’t so heavy and makes it easy to walk in for an entire day—I took them to Seattle and had no problems with them!!

  • Layering is the key to nailing Spring style! Especially with our crazy temps. Love all these looks.

    • Jodie Filogomo

      You’re exactly right Aracely!! Thanks!!

  • Amy D. Christensen

You gals are so cute! I love what you did with these dresses and I would have never thought of styling them the way you gals have. I love your look Jodie. The burgundy top and purple booties are the perfect pairing. What great ideas for styling a t-shirt dress. You are inspiring me again! – Amy

I love how your mom made each dress different. The first day with sweaters over, you couldn’t tell how different they are! Your outfit is fabulous! I love the burgundy accents, and yes, plum is a neutral, isn’t everything a neutral : ) ? Nancy’s could go to work for sure, and really, you don’t think of a t-shirt dress for work all the time, depending on your work environment. But the white shirt dresses it up. Love the shoes too! Your mom! She’s a classic! I’d be wearing those great boots everywhere!! I know I’ve said it before, but this blog gives me a lift seeing you all having so much fun with this! About transitional clothing, that’s a tough one for me. I have things that I use as transitional, but find that a lot of things still look too much like winter, or too much like summer. That’s an area I’m going to be focusing on this year in my wardrobe. I have way too much black!!! I’ve got a couple transitional winners though. What I do, when I land on something, is write it in my notebook that I keep for reference. Since I work in a pretty formal office environment, on Sundays I sit in front of the closet and plan a weeks’ worth of outfits, depending on what that day will bring, meeting, hiding in my office, etc. When something makes me feel great any particular day (what I’m wearing), I put a star by it in my notebook. That way if I know a rough day is coming, I’ll grab a starred outfit so at least I can feel good while I’m going through a rough patch at work! So in that same notebook, divided by seasons, I have a “transitional” section. It’s only one page so far, so it needs work and imagination! Your blog is helping me think outside the box on this one!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks for such a positive comment, Karen!
And what a great system to keep the week organized with your clothing. I know that when I was working, I would wear the same pants all week long, so I only had to plan out the blazers or cardigans for the week. Then it helped to know which trousers needed to be taken to the dry cleaners too! I always figured that I rarely saw the same patients during that week, and even if I did, they weren’t focused on my trouser choice!!
As for the transitional outfits!! I do think this is a hard one. Especially when working—you don’t want to appear silly or unprofessional. I guess that’s what I used to think of many of the outfits I saw in the magazines for this category. But maybe the white blouse under a dress is the key??
      Happy Wednesday!!

  • I really like the layered look! Have a great day.
