JODIE (50’s model)
I started out wanting to be either a dentist or interior designer in middle school. Can you say very different ends of the spectrum? And luckily my mother was of the mindset that I could do anything I set my mind to. Consequently I attended dental school in the early 1990’s and practiced as a sole practitioner for over 20 years. My focus was general dentistry, but I graduated from a post graduate program in Aesthetic Dentistry in the early part of my career also. I loved many of the aspects of being a dentist except for the fact of being a boss. I supremely enjoyed taking care of my patients, yet I also felt the weight of the world on my shoulders at times! Thus when the opportunity arose to sell my practice (a little earlier than planned), I decided to give it a go!
Shopping and decorating are truly a fun pastime for me–heck, I even like grocery shopping. But really, I’ve decided that life is a learning process! Styles change, our bodies change and even our likes and dislikes change. Call it evolution if you will!
I met my husband, Rob, at an 8 Minute Dating Event in 2003. I feel so lucky to have met my soul mate, as he makes me a better woman in so many ways! Because of him, I have learned to embrace my pale skin color (I’ve given up tanning and even tanning lotions) and I’m trying to love my curly hair (although I still get it straightened occasionally)!
I moved out here to Colorado to go to college at the University of Colorado (go Buffs). My dad was living here at the time, so it was a perfect opportunity to leave my hometown state of Ohio, yet still be close to family. If you’ve ever visited Denver, then you will probably realize why I never left. It’s a beautiful area with many days of sunshine and very little humidity. The influx of people moving here has been amazing since I first came out, but that also means it’s not quite the cow town that it used to be!
This blog is my adventure in the second half of my life. Since I have access to my family close by, I decided to include them in my journey (check out their fun facts below). The best part about including my mom and step mom is that it takes some of the attention away from me! And hopefully allows women of different age groups to relate to the content!
CHARLOTTE (70’s model)
Charlotte is my mother! She grew up on a farm in Indiana and attended Purdue University in order to become a Home Economics teacher. Mom met my father at Purdue and moved to Toledo to start her family. She taught Home Ec at a small high school in Ohio for almost 30 years before retiring! Then she kept busy by working in the alterations department at a local department store and finally moving to Colorado to be closer to her only child (me!)!
Once here in Denver, she continued doing alterations at Nordstrom’s Department Store for about 5 years. She would even alter clothes for neighbors and friends until about 3 years ago. Now she continues to sew but only for herself and Nancy & I (although I’m finally learning to alter clothes myself and have even started doing it for others!)
My mom considers herself a collector (I’m the other extreme and say get rid of it–ha ha) and hates to part with much of her closet. She has quite the owl collection (everything from jewelry to knick knacks & decor), which you’ll see much of in her outfits!
Once I left the nest, mom has traveled with groups to see many other countries and places! Most of the time she comes back with interesting clothing, material or jewelry which I try to remember to tell you about in the blog!
NANCY (60’s model)
Nancy grew up in Indiana and also went to Purdue University for Elementary Education (quite a few years after my mom & dad were there)—small world, huh? She moved out here because it was an adventure and started teaching 1st grade!
She met my dad in one of her square dancing groups and they married in 1994. He passed away from pancreatic cancer in 1999, but the nice thing is the three of us get along fabulously! We spend time together at holidays, and everyday, not just for the blog!
Nancy is definitely a people person, and loves spending time doing whatever with her friends and us! She’s never been into shopping and clothing like mom and I have, but she’s happy to go along with this venture because it means we get to spend time together!
She still skis in the winter months with a group of friends, and loves attending plays and baseball games! She’s also an avid traveler and usually has one or two trips in the works whenever you talk to her!
About the Blog:
My goal for the blog is to show that age has nothing to do with style! Just because your driver’s license says a certain number does not mean you can’t continue looking fabulous! Of course not everyone loves to plan their outfits and go shopping, so I would hope I could help out in those matters. Each week on the blog is a theme that we use to style our clothing. Part of that fact is because I’m sorta an organizational freak. The other part is that when I get a new piece of clothing, I like to have a couple ideas of how to wear it! Thus if you’re looking for specific event or item of clothing to style, make sure to check out the past posts tab.
I used to think there was only one right way to dress, but this blogging experience has certainly taught me more than just computer and photography skills! I’ve learned that it’s fun to try new styles and be more adventurous! Heck, it’s only clothing, right? I certainly wish that every woman can feel better about themselves with the clothes they wear. We all know that life is too short. So we might as well wear the fun clothing, break a rule here and there, and look incredible each and every day!
Considering, I’ve always been an exuberant and thrifty shopper, I also believe spending gads on clothing items is not necessary all the time. I rarely spend more than $100 on items for myself, and thus I try to link to the same kind of items in the same price range. You may notice most of my linked item are classified as similar. This is due to the fact, that the great deals I find are usually limited in their availability or they are so old they don’t sell that item anymore. I will always disclose in my post in the event I receive an item from a company for free. If you’re looking for special deals, make sure to check out the deals & discounts tab on my website! Sometimes I’m able to give you some great discounts with certain companies.
And I’d certainly appreciate it if you help spread the word about my blog. Not that I want to be rich & famous, but I’d love to be able to cover the costs of running a blog and reach more women in doing so! You can subscribe to my posts by email on the home page and there’s the option to email a post to a friend at the bottom of every post so you can introduce them to Jodie’s Touch of Style!! And don’t forget, I earn a couple of cents on each link that you click on for the clothing items….so when you have a spare second, please click away! And I definitely thank you for the following on any or all social media sites—the links to my social media sites are on the home page or contact page for your convenience!!
In case you’re wondering, the 3 of us are considered petites. I’m 5’2″, Nancy is 5’0″ and mom is 5’4″. The photo on the right shows us stacked against each other (although I’m wearing flats and both mom & Nancy have on heels!)!!
Kari Strand (Photographer)
My former neighbor, Kari, is a photographer specializing in portraits, weddings and engagements. She was so helpful when I started the blog, by travelling to our different houses to take the many photos for the week in pictures! As her life has gotten busier, she’s not able to join in as much, but if you visit the older blog posts, you’ll see her work in action. Most of the time now, I’m taking mom’s & Nancy’s photos and Rob is taking mine (he loves the You-Tube video about Instagram husbands because it’s so true)!
If you live in the Denver area, and are looking for a photographer for any event, here’s her website: www.karistrandphotography.com
