Our Accessories Can Add Summer to our Black Outfits

Quote of the day: “In any situation, the best thing you can do is the right thing; the next best thing you can do is the wrong thing; the worst thing you can do is nothing.” Theodore Roosevelt

Are black outfits your go-to look for any season? If so you’re not the only one. I had a reader, Gail, ask if I could post some ideas about how to incorporate black outfits for your summer wear. In fact, once I started researching the topic, I found out that it’s supposedly cooler for you to wear black because it absorbs the energy from your body instead of reflecting it back. Interesting, right?

So for all of you lovers of black outfits, here is one of my ideas! Just add in some colorful accessories including your footwear, and your black outfits look instantly more summery! Just like Alison from Puppies and Pretties did recently! But more importantly, I’d like to introduce you to Clara who is new to the blog, but who realizes that even at age 87, it’s worth taking a little extra time to put together a stylish outfit.

Clara (80+ Blogette): Clara added in some fabulous red with her black and wanted to mention that sturdy shoes are important!! 🙂

Let me give you a little background about our newest blogette! Clara is 87 years old (and lived for 85 years in New York City!).  She lives with her daughter and family now in Franklin Lakes, NJ (about 30 minutes from NY).  She retired as an elementary school principal nearly 20 years ago.  She started her career (after college) as a buyer of women’s lingerie at Alexander’s then Lane Bryant and finally Interstate buying offices (the pre-cursor to Federated).  She enjoyed traveling with friends for many, many years. Clara has 1 daughter, Elena, and 2 grandchildren: Laura (age 17 who was the photographer) and Henry (age 15).

Jacket: Nippon TJMaxx 2 years~~Blouse: Jones NY 2 years~~Pants: Romans 4 years ~~Shoes: Monro (on sale)~~Watch: Coach TJ Maxx~~Ring, Purse & Earrings borrowed from Elena (all purchased on trips to Hong Kong/Singapore)~~Necklace: TJ Maxx 10 years

Jodie’s (50+) Outfit: I picked the color yellow to my black outfit!

Yellow has become my favorite color although I don’t usually wear it with black. I always feel that I might look too much like a bumble bee! Strange concern, I know, but I thought it looked great with this outfit as an accent color!

Yellow with black for summer

The black skirt is one that I DIYed myself to make it have fringe on the bottom!

Since fringe is such a fun detail that is on everything now, I thought this would be a fun way to modernize an old skirt! In the post about how to do it yourself I worked on one of my mom’s skirts from her closet which she has since worn in a post!

If the last thing you want to do is a DIY project, then I found a denim fringe skirt instead! Of course, since it’s summer, you could always add a white skirt with this detail to your collection! Although truth be told, that skirt also comes in black-ha ha!

Black clothes in summer months for women 50+

And my yellow shoes got to come out for our date night!

In case you’re interested, we went to the restaurant Colt and Grey in the RiNo district. It was good but not really our favorite eatery!!

But back to the shoes!! Just last week, I told the story how I wore these heels our for the night, but realized they weren’t the easiest for walking. I’ve had them for years, and wore them when I was working. Obviously, I sat on my behind a lot at work, so wearing high heels was easy! But now that we tend to walk more, I ended up retiring these shoes, since I bought that new pair describe in the last week, I told the story blog!

I might now need to invest in a pair of yellow sandals that would be perfect for the summer! Especially for a price like that pair! See, this is how I get into trouble. I look for fabulous deals for my readers and end up buying them myself!

The rest of my outfit came together with a neck scarf and earrings.

I didn’t want to be too matchy-matchy with my yellow accessories, so I grabbed my scarf that has a couple of different bright colors in it. I really like a scarf this way with an off the shoulder shirt, because it doesn’t break up the line of the shoulders. But you can see how I wore this same shirt previously without having it be OTS and with a long necklace!

And did you notice that my earrings are mint colored? I was trying to pick up the mint color from the scarf instead of having so much yellow. What do you think?

Nancy’s (60+) Outfit: We put together Nancy’s outfit first before deciding on which color to add in with her accessories.

She had just purchased this tunic when the 3 of us went shopping for some brain exercises! It wasn’t part of the exercise, but it was a great deal and she thought it’d be perfect for her upcoming cruise. And she was right, because she wore it for her “fancy” dinners on the cruise.

Now, I know that many women do not appreciate this open shoulder trend. But if you do like being able to showcase a part of your arm that still looks great, then here’s even another option!

Women over 60 wearing black outfits for summer

Once we had Nancy all clothed in her black outfit, I grabbed her orange necklace to add in the color!

I’m sure for many of you, adding in accessories is the most obvious way to change the look of an outfit. That’s exactly what we did recently in order to spruce up our t-shirts! But I know, many times, I tend to think about accessories that have the same colors of what I’m wearing. And the problem in those cases, is then the accessories don’t stand out!

The answer to that issue would be to find a necklace that has many colors in it. Like this one or this one are both reasonably priced!

Accessories for black outfits in summer

Since Nancy also has orange sandals, we figured that would be an easy addition!

Orange is one of those under appreciated colors, I think. But let me tell you how much love these sandals have gotten since we bought them a couple of years ago. They are perfect for adding in a bright color to any kind of outfit.

If you’ve never shopped for orange shoes before, then let me help you out! For the flat sandal lovers, I found this pair! And then there’s some with a small heel! But my favorite pair is this print pair that is just calling my name!! Even though that’s a high heel, at least it’s a chunky one!!

Black outfits for summer for older women

Nancy wore her Chico’s traveler’s pants with her dark tunic!

These are the same pants that she styled for our post about what to wear on a plane trip! I found that Chico’s is not the only store that has these kind of trousers! You can find them at Eddie Bauer or White House Black Market! I’m sure there are even more than this, but it is certainly nice to have items that are easy to travel in and don’t wrinkle!!

Charlotte’s (70+) Outfit: Black outfits can be put together a variety of ways.

I started with mine as a black skirt & a top, Nancy’s as black pants and a top, and now mom is showing a black “suit.”

My mom made this matching knit pants and jacket many years ago. The ruffle part of mom’s jacket is quite modern right now! And one of the ways I know this  is when I search for an item with my shopping app there are many to choose from! For example there is a white one available or even an olive bomber version among many others!! Since this is a renewed style, you could even already have one like it in your closet?

adding accessories to summer black outfits

I didn’t exactly plan for us to all wear different colored accessories for this post, but sometimes I get lucky.

This way you can see how different colors look when they are paired with your black pieces. For my mom’s accessories we chose pink since I thought her floral shoes would add some nice lightness to this look!

I know I talk about shoes all the time, but they really speak to me! A great pair of shoes just seem like the cherry on top for an outfit. And if you are one that loves flats, there are still stylish floral shoes for you! I found a couple pairs that could be your “cherry on top” including these, these and these!

Pink necklace with black outfits

My mom picked this black & white shirt for under her jacket!

Since it’s a print top, you may not think that a necklace is needed. And even my mom thought this necklace wouldn’t show up much! But sometimes a more subtle detail is fun! In fact, I’ll show you some examples of accessories on print items next month!

Because if you are an accessory junkie like my mom or myself, then the fact that you are wearing prints shouldn’t stop you from showcasing all of your gems!! Of course, if you had a brighter necklace or one with more colors then they could stand out even more!

70+ women wearing black outfits

However, for those of you who don’t love accessories, then a print top could be all you need to make your black outfits seem more summery.

There are so many pretty print tops available everywhere. If you prefer the lighter prints then you might like this one or this one. But even if the darker colors look better on you, there is this one or this one that still are good for the summer!

Our examples of adding in colorful accessories to our black outfits all used the warm colors. But you could certainly wear your blues, greens and purples with it too! You have to let me know, if this appeals to you? It’s always so interesting to me, that there are so many women that love wearing black, so I think it’d be fun to know who you are and why?

Thanks to one and all of you for your support. It means more than you know!

Our event with a local boutique called Trendz is only a couple of days away!!

Charlotte, Nancy and myself always love meeting the people that are reading the blog. Besides the owners of the store are giving every attendee a $20 gift card! What could be better?

If you love to wear black outfits in the summer too, then I found the perfect bright jewelry to go with it:

  • I absolutely love your outfit Jodie! The photos really capture the movement of the skirt and the necktie and yellow shoes are fabulous!
    Emma xxx

    • Thanks Emma!! It really goes to show that we all get into certain habits, because I wouldn’t have put this together except for the fact that my reader asked for how to wear black in the summer!! But I loved how the outfit turned out—so lesson learned!!

  • Great look, ladies!! I do wear black year-round, even in hot as mess GA! Fab use of accessories!!

    • Ha ha, Elle!! But supposedly that’s smart of you!!

  • I’m going to have to learn to accessorize. My outfits are pretty plain.

    • Well, you’ll be happy to know that accessories are going to be a future theme for a couple of posts in July!! It’s not hard once you get in the habit, Barbie!!

  • Kris Ronchetti

love this blog!! Each of you wear your outfits beautifully and give me lots of options!! Thank you so much!

    • Thanks for the wonderful words, Kris!
I hope you come back and visit lots more!!

  • Fashion Island

Such beautiful black outfits! Love the pop of colour these accessories are producing <3

    Have a nice day, ladies!

  • Jodie, of course I love all of your outfits, but yours in particular is absolutely magnificent! I adore the neckerchief with the off the shoulder style. It is so chic! And that top, my friend, is absolutely brilliant. And your fringy skirt, too. You look amazing! I love it all! Thanks so much for linking up with me as always!

    • Thanks for the kindness Shelbee!! I have to admit, that this was definitely out of my box since I rarely wear black!! So it’s nice to know it came together okay!!

  • Some great tips here on how to jazz up your Black. I find Black a really hard colour to wear! It doesn’t suit me at all!
I think you look great in the cold shoulder top Jodie and that’s a lovely photo close up of you. I’m also laughing at your excuse for buying stuff that your supposedly finding for your readers! I can relate to that!

    • I’m the same way Laurie!! I’ve been swearing off black for awhile now. I really find it frustrating that retailers sometimes only carry a great piece in black! But maybe that’s better for my wallet, since I have very little restraint, ha ha!!

  • Such a great way to bring out black in a fun way, with colour and prints. Love these ladies looks so chic 🙂 http://www.bauchlefashion.com/2017/06/trend-report-liquid-silver-boots.html

  • I love these gorgeous black outfits! So posh! =)

  • Amy D. Christensen

This was a great post, Jodie. Black is an easy go to for any season, especially when you just can’t figure out what to wear, so I love that your brought this up for the summer season. All of these work well, because of your addition of bright or summery accessories. You look amazing by the way. I hope your hubby told you so! – Amy

    • Aww…thanks Amy! My husband is very good at always saying I look nice. The problem is he’s very biased—ha ha!!

  • Jacqueline Rendine

Love these pops of color that are added to each of these looks!

  • Karen R

Love adding the pops of color! The yellow and black together is so cute. Thanks for joining in on the link up today!

  • I love wearing all black! And adding a pop of color or two makes it perfect for summer! You all look beautiful :).

    Trendy & Tidy

  • Carol Cameleon

Love the yellow splashes in your outfit. I always thought wearing lighter colours reflected back the sun (when it appears here in the UK!) and never occurred to me about black reflecting back our energy! Makes sense though. Thanks for sharing these lovely outfits with #HighlightsofHappy Jodie.

    • Isn’t that so interesting about the reflecting, Carol? Of course in theory it may be true, but can we feel it and tell a difference is the question??
      Thanks for the lovely compliments!!

  • Anna Parkes

Jodie I just love this black and yellow outfit of yours! The diy skirt is fabulous and looks great in these shots. I’m also loving Nancy’s top which shows just the right amount of flesh in just the right place for me.

    Anna x

    • Thanks so much Anna!!
I almost feel bad for this skirt, because it gets tucked away and not worn much. I don’t wear black all that much, but I’m going to definitely wear this skirt more!!

  • Laura

I absolutely LOVE colorful accessories to any outfit, especially in summer! All of you have such an amazing collection of pretty accessories to choose from!

    • Thanks Laura!!
It’s true that we all have quite a collection–but maybe that’s the advantage of getting older?? The accessories luckily still fit from ages ago!! LOL

  • I love all your fun pops of color! I love to wear black year-round too.

  • You ladies sure know how to look summery in black! I especially love your outfit Jodie! The off-the-shoulders top is so sexy and I love the skirt with fringes! Yes, I wear black in summer, but my favourite is all white. Today’s post is black and white. 🙂

    • I’m more of a white girl, too Carmen!! Even in the winter! But it’s good to get out of my box–since I keep telling my mom she should! LOL

  • I think that “black is cooler” notion was written by someone who stays indoors. If you’ve ever been outside in 90º CA sun wearing dark colors, well, it’s just a LITTLE bit hot! Black and yellow = bumblebee and black + orange = Halloween. I’d say Nancy’s necklace is more of a peach/salmon color, and very pretty at that! I had a favorite horizontally striped yellow/black dress — talk about looking like a bee! My feet will be carrying the yellow/black thing today — watch out for my stinger!

I can’t believe you’re doing an event the night before flying out here. Ambitious! I guess you’ll be sleeping on the plane? See you SOON!

    • You think like I do, Anne!! Usually when I read an article, I need to know who wrote it!! No different than some of the studies that are done—who did the study and what’s their gain by it??
Of course, you did see that the event ends at 8pm?? My bedtime is 9–ha ha!! And hopefully I’ll be packed before hand!!

  • Debbie Stinedurf

What a beauty Clara is! Love her red and black combo. And you my friend, look magnificent! And how funny is it that I never pair yellow and black for the exact same reason, although the way you’ve done it here is most definitely not bumble bee-esque!

    • Well, I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks black & yellow is like a bumble bee. Now I wonder where we got that??
I feel the same way about the holiday colors—even fourth of July. I rarely love to wear them combined so obviously!! I need to have my head examined…ha ha!!
      Thanks Debbie!

  • As a huge lover of black, this is yet another post I can truly relate to! Your mom did a lovely job with her accessories, and I love Nancy’s cold shoulder.
But, Jodie…wowzers! Love it! There is so much fun going on with this outfit, I don’t even know where to start! You did a great job on that skirt! I DO love me some fringe! Though DIY isn’t my strong suit! Your yellow accessories are striking against the black….not bumble bee-ish at all! haha! But, my favorite is that top…FABULOUS! You look amazing!

    • Thanks Ronnie!!
This is truly a DIY that anyone could do—I was worried at first, but it turned out so good!! I even figure that when the fringe trend is gone, I can cut it off and hem up the skirt, if I want!!

  • Kirsten Wick

This is so perfect, even though I hardly wear an all black outfit, it can look so summery by adding the right amount of accessories, the yellow pumps really pop. Have a great week, Kirsten x

    • Thanks Kirsten!! I’m like you in that I rarely wear black like this—but it was fun to try to figure out if I could make it somewhat summery!!

  • Yes! You know I love black! Just like in mine post of today! We are often very synchrome!😁😁😁
And don t you just still love your hair!! It so very nice!

    • We are on the same page a lot, Nancy!! That’s because we are birds of a feather!!!

  • Terri Webster Schrandt

These outfits are stunning! Loving the cold shoulder blouses that have been gracing lovely ladies these few months!

    • Thanks Terri!!
I do love the cold shoulder tops—to me they are fun and modern!! I’ve been seeing them a lot around here and I always tell the women that I love them!!

  • Clara has Classic style. I hope we’ll be seeing more of her soon. All of you wear black well.

Here’s what I believe about heat and white or black clothing: If you’re going to be out in the sun, wear white to reflect light and heat. If you can remain in the shade, wear loosely fitting black clothing. Breezes will help to move heat away from you, especially in the shade because of Venturi action in the trees.

When I think of wearing black in summer, I think of black linen or crisp cotton, maybe black with a white dot or check or small figure. Your black and white striped blouse is perfect. I think of black patent pumps or white sandals, maybe nude sandals for a hint of ‘barefoot.’ I guess my favorite might be a slightly flared black dress with a fitted white cotton jacket. White shiny beads or silver jewelry. Pink gold.

    • Clara will be joining us again on Wednesday!! And hopefully again sometime next month!!
I always thought black was hotter in the summer, but you bring up a good point about the difference in the sun or shade!
I know the woman who requested this category, said that she always wears her black shoes too! I guess I think of black shoes as so heavy, that I rarely wear even the black sandals I have. In fact, I was thinking of getting rid of them just this weekend!! Part of that could be the fact that I love color so much??
The pink gold is one of my faves—I just don’t see it as much lately!!

  • Mireille

I love everything about your outfit! No bumblebee effect!

    • Thanks Mireille!! It’s funny what gets into our heads, right?

  • I’ve never heard that black is cooler to wear, how interesting! i’m going to have to test that out, haha. (though it’s hard for me to give up my summer whites.)
I love black and yellow together, though I totally get your bumble bee concerns. It’s so silly the things we can get hung-up on!
    Chic on the Cheap

    • I was so surprised when I read that article (not that I really read it in detail although I should). It makes me wonder if it’s like us learning that the earth is flat vs round. Do we hear something over and over and just believe it??
      Thanks Lydia!!

  • Yup, I wear black all year-round -these are great tips! Thanks!

  • Charlotte Miller

I made this black outfit in case I needed something cool for a summer funeral.

  • Mary Kalpos

Here in Greece everyone wears black… all the time. You would think everyone was in mourning or wanted to be taken more seriously. It really is too hot to wear it in the summer but they do. Your outfit is a breath of fresh air. Love that fringe which is such a nice surprise.

    • I would have never realized that Mary!! You would think that with all of the fabulous colors of the houses and doors (or is that only in Santorini?) that everyone would like color!!!

  • Oh, my! I never wear black but maybe I need to correct that. Especially if I could wear it as well as you girls do. Jodie, your legs look like a Rockette’s. Hubba hubba! Love the yellow shoes but can totally relate to being able to wear them to work but not to walk in ! But gosh that fringe and those shoes are sure flattering. What’s a little foot pain?

Hurray for Nancy wearing the cold shoulder top. That adds such great interest. And her orange necklace is perfect.

Charlotte’s ruffled cardi and the sweet layers on her top are so feminine. Adding that soft pink necklace was icing on the cake. A girly girl from head to toe.

Wish my mom could use the computer. She would enjoy seeing you gals all dolled up and rockin’ the latest trends. Might be expensive for me, though, because we would probably have to buy her one of everything you feature!

    • Oh, Leslie—you sure know how to make me smile and laugh!! We do need to get your mom on the computer—at least to see my blog!! I think the best thing for my mom is to see how other women are dressing (not just the models in the magazines, you know?)!!
Thanks for all of the wonderful compliments.
I made sure to forward it to both mom & Nancy so they could appreciate your kind words!!

  • Another great example of how accessories change an outfit! I love the color you all added to the black. Your yellow is so fun and summer like!

    Amy Ann
    Straight A Style

    • Thanks Amy!!
I must have accessories on the brain, because there will be a couple more posts like this in July!!
I need to start getting out more…ha ha!!

  • LOVE your bright accessories with your black outfits. They add such a fun pop of color & brighten up the whole look

  • I love black outfits! And your accessories are all the perfect amounts of color. Your heels are fabulous! And you did an awesome job DIYing your skirt!! It’s so cool!

  • Jodie, your outfit is to die for! I love those sleeves and your fringed skirt. I also love that you added app of color and the cutest neck scarf! Sooo cute!

    • Thanks Liz!!
It’s certainly not my usual to wear so much black, but I love the colorful accessories!!

  • Judy Gramith

Funny thing that my eyes were drawn straight to your cute yellow shoes!! I haven’t worn an off the shoulder top yet but I really like this black vertical pin stripe one Jodie! I love your gutsy DIY on the skirt too!
Nancy’s tunic looks like it is beaded! Like the a-line shape of it and her heal height looks perfect for comfort.
Charlotte’s look strikes me as a year round option. Is the pretty print beneath the jacket sleeveless? The ruffled jacket is a nice feminine touch,
I don’t wear all black in the summer (hadn’t thought about it before but you’ve nailed the fact that cheerful colored accessories make all the difference!

    • Thanks so much Jude for all of the wonderful observations!!
I really don’t wear much black period these last couple of years, so I think this theme was very hard for me! But colorful accessories—that I can do easily!!
Nancy’s tunic has sparkle in it—I think that’s why it looks beaded!! It was perfect for her dressy evenings on the cruise ship!!

  • Nicole Mölders

I love how each of you added a pop of color without taking the impression of a classic black/white look away.

  • These accessories add to the perfect pop of color to these looks! I love your Mom
    shoes. Happy Monday!

    • Thanks Kathrine!! It’s amazing how the little accessories can add some fun!!

  • I particularly love the yellow with the black. Looks so great together. The past few years I’ve started learning the importance of accessories and color. It’s been a fun lesson!

    • Thanks Lisa!!
I think my love of accessories, stems from my mother!! You know how they say the nut doesn’t fall far from the tree?
In fact, we are working on a blog series about accessories that will be published in July–hopefully you’ll like the comparisons!!

  • Love the fringe on that skirt Jodie! I do this as well as black looks a bit stark on my paler skin. Color around the face really brightens it! Love the yellow as well ! Everyone looks lovely with the pops of color!
    Have a great week!
    jess xx

    • Thanks Jess!! That’s how I feel about black too!!
I’m such a lover of color, that it’s hard for me to wear a lot of black—but it’s good to have variety, I guess!!

  • You look so spry and chic in your outfit Jodie!

I love the DIY’d skirt. I’m a bit hooked on fringed leather skirts. I picked another one up this weekend in forest green suede. It is lovely!

    • Every time I wear this skirt, I think I need to make another one (or I could be smart like you and just buy it that way)!!
I can’t wait to see yours soon!!

  • Mummabstylish Mummabstylish

You’re outfit is wonderful, my favourite I think. Love a little fringing. x Jacqui

    • Thanks Jacqui!! The fringe does make is so fun!! Who doesn’t love to swish when they walk??

  • I’m all about the black no matter what season… even in the 115 degree heat here in Vegas! Although people do look at me funny! 😉

    • Yes, but people didn’t read how it’s supposedly cooler to wear black. Of course, I’m not sure if I believe that article—we should test it??

  • I love all these outfits, but they do look a bit warm for summer, unless you’re having a “cool wave” like we are here in Wisconsin. I think adding color to the otherwise all black outfit is a great idea. I do wear black in the summer, but not on really hot days because it attracts too much heat.

    • It’s true our weather is quite bipolar. Just this weekend we had 60 degree temperatures, and now it’ll be up in the 80’s!! So might as well be prepared for it all, I guess!!!
I thought the same thing about wearing black on the hot days, but I just read the opposite—I think I need to do an experiment??

  • You know, Jodie, this reminds me of why I look forward to each of your posts! They are “everywoman”… every budget, every shape, every age. I love wearing black but often swap it out for white as my go-to in the summer. Love the addition of the color pops!

As to your skirt, I bought a black knit dress with a fringe hem and dressed it up for a winter event. I think it’ll go great with my new fashion accessory…and some of the ideas you’ve offered here!

    • I’m so glad to hear you say that Em!! Because we are “real women” and I hope that is what everyone pulls away from this!!
I admit, that this theme was hard for me! I rarely wear black in the summer. Yet, this skirt works so well no matter what season, that I’m glad I pulled it out!!
Of course you have one similar, because you are very stylish, right?? Now you’ll just have to see if it’ll work for this season—then we can be twinsies!!

  • Love all your black outfits and yes your accessories really make them pop! I love your DIY skirt! How cute! Fab post Jodie! Peace!
    Cheryl Tucker

    • Thanks Cheryl!!
I do have plenty of colorful accessories, so that part of this theme was fun!!

  • Tina von tinaspinkfriday

Jodie, you all look soo great! Your blouse ist stunning :). Thank you for introducing to Clara 80+. She is fabulous.
Happy fashion show on 29th 😉
    XO Tina

    • Thanks Tina!! Seeing Clara, really makes me realize how age is just a number!!

  • donnanance

Jodie, you have given me some good ideas for outfits! Love all the accessories for the black outfits. Black is a perfect to showcase some fabulous jewelry. There is nothing ordinary or frumpy about the three of you! Loved meeting Clara…what a sharp looking gal! Definitely nothing frumpy about her.

    • Thanks Donna!!
You’re so right that black can be the perfect backdrop for many of our brighter accessories!!

  • I love black year round, love the colorful accessories!!

  • Such a great post! I love brightening up all black looks with coloured accessories. Love all these looks. Have a great day! Gemma x

    • Thanks Gemma!
I rarely wear that much black, but the colorful accessories do make it fun! I may have to wear it a little more!!

I guess I really need to throw out all those fashion “rules” I learned growing up – like no black in summer and no white after Labor Day lol. Who says?? Love your DIY fringe skirt. How fun and flirty. As always…good ideas to be found here!

    • Thanks Bev!
It’s hard to change that thinking that was drilled into our heads at an impressionable age. But I think the more we see others breaking them, the easier it gets!!
Thanks for the lovely comment and happy Monday!

Things I love about this post – your Bloguette. She is just gorgeous and looks so lovely and put together. I can so see my mom as one of your Bloguettes. She was 5′ 2″, always dressed really cute, wore her jewelry & had her nails done (usually bright red) and had the most beautiful white hair! Your outfit is so cute and I do love your earrings with it!

    • Thanks so much Cathy!!
I think Clara is the perfect example of how getting older doesn’t mean we can’t look fabulous!! And what a fabulous memory of your mother!!

I have to just say, Clara looks amazing. If I just saw the picture without your background, I would have never guessed her age. She looks fantastic, pulled together and current! I hope I’m going to look that good when I get to be that age. She looks great in red! You are right about accessories taking the color black into summer. I do wear black in the summer, just not as often. Your skirt is so cool!! What a great idea! I had one just like that and last fall cut it off to knee length to make it different. I wish I had done what you did! I love that and it’s such a fun look. You do look summery with the stripes and touches of yellow. I like how Nancy took what could be considered a fall kind of outfit and brightened up her accessories. Her earrings remind me of summer and the sandals add a nice touch and lighten things up. Your mom’s cascading jacket looks light (can’t believe she made that!!) and wearing a jacket that isn’t a button-up kind of thing keeps things looking light. Love her floral shoes, another summer touch! I have a few black dresses for summer for work, one sleeveless and the other with elbow sleeves and have used the accessory and shoe trick myself to keep them light. I find I tend to wear them on cloudy or rainy days! Maybe I’ll rethink that. Please pass along to Clara how young she looks. She has a great hairstyle and I love her glasses!

    • You took the words out of my mouth Karen—I want to look like Clara if I make it to that age. Although my mom is right on her tail since she’ll be 80 next year!!
I think this was a learning lesson for me, because black is just not on my radar, especially in the summer! But I think it’s like anything—we can make it work if we try??
