 Graphic Tee for 2 Generations

Ageless Style in a Graphic Tee

Quote of the day: “Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.” Robert Louis Stevenson

I’m so happy to announce that the 3 of us were invited into the Ageless Style group. It was a last minute addition as one of the originals decided to stop blogging. That’s why you don’t see Nancy (the 60+ model) in this post. She was on a fabulous vacation when I needed to get these photos. But don’t fret, she’ll be involved in the upcoming Ageless Style themes.

So the concept behind this Ageless Style group is that 10 bloggers over the age of 40 will showcase their interpretation of the theme. This month’s theme via Jill from Doused in Pink  is graphic tees. This item of clothing has seen many posts on our blog in the past. The last two were at a request from a reader, Jill, to give ideas of styling her school shirt which we tried by adding in fun accessories, and pairing with playful bottoms!

To try to give some variety to this particular item, I decided to go for a monochromatic look with our graphic tee of choice, which we’ve never done before for a graphic tee! Let me just say that it was an option that made my mom extremely happy. She loves monochromatic outfits!! And no, I didn’t plan for both mom and I to both wear blue, but you know what they always say? The nut doesn’t fall far from the tree!!

Make sure to check out the other 9 bloggers below for other great ideas to style a graphic tee! We are out to prove that you can still be fashionable and on trend over 40 and beyond.

Jodie’s (50+) Outfit: Let me just say that my idea of a monochromatic look may not be exactly your version of monochromatic.

But I did keep it all blue, so that kinda counts, right? I have the hardest time putting together monochromatic looks for some reason. I always want to include a contrast or different color. That’s why I used my Fuchsia lipstick from Look Fabulous Forever!!

Let’s just say that in retrospect, I was channeling my local peeps!! Both the graphic tee and the maxi skirt were purchased here in town!!

Ageless Style with Graphic tee

I know the tee isn’t so easy to read, but let me help you!! Obviously you can see the state of Colorado!! All the other writing to make up the map of the USA says “Not Colorado”! You probably have to live her to get it, but for some reason it touched my funny bone!!

Of course it didn’t hurt that we were shopping at the funnest place the other day called Wish Gifts!  You’ve seen me outside this store in their big pink chair once before on the blog! This time, Nancy, Rob & I were out for ice cream and decided to go in the store. And they even served us champagne, so that could have been a factor why we had so much fun!! You’ll even get to see us shopping in action in an upcoming post!

Graphic Tee Colorado

The maxi is from a local designer named, Brooks!

She has the most amazing studio in Downtown Denver with all of her fabulous materials that she collects from all over the world!! I was drawn to this skirt because of the gorgeous colors and beading on the points!!

Truthfully, my style is more classic and not what I’d consider bohemian. At least that was while I was working. But now that I’ve been blogging and seeing other women with different styles, I’ve truly enjoyed breaking out of my box!  Besides, doesn’t this material almost look like the calm waters of the Caribbean?

And I truly think the maxi skirts can work so nicely for women who don’t feel comfortable showing their legs! There are so many varieties available like the casual t-shirt knit ones, to the dressier versions!

Graphic Tee for Women over 50

I ended up keeping my sandals a gold color which to me looks like a neutral nude. I purchased these sandals at Target a couple years ago, and they have certainly gotten a ton of wear! If you ever thought about gold sandals, I would definitely tell you that they are very versatile. Whether you prefer the comfortable pair or one with more heel height, I can personally say that they go with everything!

Charlotte’s (70+) Outfit: My mom was actually excited about another graphic tee post!

She’s had this tee in her closet for awhile, but forgot about it with the last series!! And the message is her to a tee!!

Graphic Tee and Ageless Style

The other reason my mom was so excited is because she absolutely loves wearing monochrome outfits. I can’t tell you how many times as I was growing up that I heard, “it’s slimming!” Now if you know me at all, then you know I love to play the devil’s advocate, and I will argue all day long, that it’s not the colors that are slimming. But that’s a subject for another day!!

Just let it be known, that I made my mother happy with this outfit theme!!!

Woman 70+ & Graphic Tee

The great thing about this skirt, is it’s part of a suit.

I know when most women retire, they get rid of their suits and work clothes. But I think this is a great example of how you can still wear them and change them up!! To me, a pencil skirt is so flattering and universally stylish! Whether you prefer a print or a solid, you don’t even have to spend a lot of money on this item!!

Monochromatic & Graphic Tee

I guess my mom really knows how to put together a monochromatic look much better than I do! From her shoes to her earrings, she’s crushing on the blues!!

Of course I have to point out that she made both the scarf and the earrings. The scarf was remnant material she found at the fabric store, and the earrings were in the drapery section at Jo-Ann Fabrics!! I really love the idea of wearing the scarf hanging down the back of your outfit like this. Then it doesn’t take away from the focal point of the funny tee. And besides it also won’t fall in my food as I’m eating!!

Thanks to one and all of you for your support. It means more than you know!

  • It works well – the casual t shirt and nice skirt.

  • Oh gosh, your mom’s T is too cute! I love yours too!! I want a Wisconsin shirt now. 🙂 Hope Nancy had a wonderful vacation! 🙂

    • Thanks Lindsey!!
I do think that everyone needs their own state!!
      XOXO

  • Your mom’s T-shirt is such fun! I love your skirt and bag, such a beautiful colour. Thanks for linking up!

    • Thanks Jess!! That sewing shirt is my mom to a tee!! Literally—ha ha!
      XOXO

  • Debbie Stinedurf

You know that I love a good graphic tee…especially one that is witty and/or has some personal meaning for me. One of my favorites is one that I picked up at our local small town grocery store…lol! I’m dying over your skirt! It’s beautiful and it’s so me. If you ever get tired of it…;)
    Debbie
    http://www.fashionfairydust.com

    • I am becoming more and more in love with the funny shirts I’ve been seeing!! I think knowing that I can spruce them up in so many ways, make them more than just a t-shirt!!
Thanks for the love on this skirt!! I love this material and was even thinking that when maxis are out of style, how I could redesign it into a shirt??
      XOXO

  • Well finally, that outfit you are wearing? I would wear that. I love a little funky. And I finally found that I don’t mind wearing scarves….as long as they’re in my hair and not around my neck. The scarf that your mother made would definitely be on my head! I love your mother’s cheeky outfit and it’s obvious by the twinkle in her eye that she does too!

    • So you’re a little boho, huh, Jennifer? You need to be living in Southern CA then—you see a ton of women dressed like this and you’d fit right in!! XOXO
And the scarf around your head is fun. I keep meaning to try that!! Lord knows I need it to cover the mess of curls on my head!!!
      XOXO

  • I love that you both went monochromatic with the blues. And, yes, I love a message tee. They’re just fun.

    • They are fun—especially when they have meaning to you!!
      Thanks Daenel!!
      XOXO

  • sue

I have to say I don’t wear T-shirts Jodie but you ladies always put the style into any outfit you wear.

    • I used to only wear t-shirt when working out…but I have to admit, that I like them as an easy way to casualize the dressier pieces nowadays!!
      Thanks Sue!!
      XOXO

  • Len Dela Peña Parent

Your look is amazing Dolls. That ruffle skirt is absolutely fab!
    SO BEAUTIFUL and flawless!!
    Thanks for sharing!
    Much love, Len

  • While I’m not typically bohemian, there is a part of me which loved and adores it, and for gorgeous pieces like that skirt to find their way to you, it’s okay to embrace a more bohemian side.
    http://www.iamchiconthecheap.com/

    • My husband always laughs when I pull out my few and far between boho pieces. He calls me his hippy chick then!! And he doesn’t love them because he didn’t like that time in his life!
I never really had much in this style until I started blogging, because I thought I always had to have a professional air as a dentist….I”m so glad that’s over, so I can try new things and have all kinds of different styles!
Besides…the material of this skirt is just so eye catching. I plan to wear it, but if by chance the maxis go out of style or I stop wearing them, I can see the option of somehow making it a shirt!!
      Thanks Lydia!!
      XOXO

  • Une femme

The “sewing machine” tee is a hoot! I have several friends who would like that one.

    • Isn’t it perfect for some people, Susan?? And I’m pretty sure she bought it from a catalogue!!
      XOXO

  • As someone who loves her graphic tees, I really enjoyed this post! I need to make an effort to wear my tees more often, I have quite a collection despite trying many times to trim it down. I love both outfits, but the first graphic tee and maxi skirt one has to be my favourite as that’s a combination I like to wear 🙂

Hope you are having a lovely week so far 🙂

    Away From The Blue Blog

    • Thanks so much Mica!!
I think it’s my favorite to take these shirts and style them somewhat unexpectedly!! It’s a challenge and fun!!
      XOXO

  • I am so loving how you styled the graphic tee! =)

    – Cielo

  • Loving the styling! How fun you both paired with skirts!

    • Thanks Michelle!! It is such a beachy look, isn’t it??
But not something I’ll be taking to Alaska..ha ha!!
      XOXO

  • I was just visiting Jill’s blog saying I cannot believe I don’t own a graphic tee. You all look great in them. I always like them styled with a skirt for that opposites attract style idea.

    Straight A Style

    • Well, I never had one until I started blogging. I think I didn’t consider them “professional” or appropriate—maybe that’s why you don’t have one yet??
But ever since I bought the ones with my blog name and logo on them, I think they are fun advertisements!!
We should get you one that says “Straight A Style” 🙂
      XOXO

  • Judy Gramith

    You both look completely cute!!!
Your t-shirts are so perfect it’s amost too perfect!!
I hope Rob has one of the Colorado t-shirts too!
I agree with my buddy Charlotte about the column of slim color created by a one color look! 🙂
I also think she’s slim enough to step outside her comfort zone even more than she does. I know it’s after you plead, beg and cajole (?) :-):-):-):-):-)

    • He didn’t get one of these t-shirts—in fact, I almost took it back, because I was wondering if I really needed another tee?? Maybe I’ll share it with him–he’ll look like a muscle man in it..ha ha!!
I’m so glad you said this about my mom being slim. She certainly doesn’t believe me..;)
      XOXO

  • Lesley Watson

Thanks to the Ageless Style ladies. What a diverse group of personalities and styles. I’ll look forward to first Tuesdays. Love your skirt. I can see that styled many different ways. I’ll admit I own no graphic tees. What’s wrong with me? Don’t I have a message to get out to the world? I’ll have to do some thinking and shopping on this issue.

    • Well, it’s only been in these last couple of years that I bought any graphic tees. So you’re right on track!! You just have to find the right one!!!!
      Thanks Lesley!!
      XOXO

  • Tina von tinaspinkfriday

Jodie I love graphic tees! You both look great! I love your shirt… perfect for my kate spade whale bag 🙂
    XO Tina

  • I DO love a graphic tee! Monochromatic looks are so ‘in’ right now, especially with makeup. Of course the only look I like from head to toe is black! 😉
On another note..you have fab legs and should never stop wearing shorts. Just sayin’
    http://styleforlessvegas.wordpress.com

    • Awww…you’re so nice Darlene!! I’ll make sure I pull out the shorts more often just because of you!!
      XOOX

  • Ha ha! your tees are perfect! Sue from a Colourful Canvas needs your Mom’s tee.

    I love your Mom’s shoes.

    bisous
    Suzanne

    • You’re exactly right, Suzanne!! Sue does need that tee also!!
      XOXO

  • Rebecca Saffer

What a fun post and I love both graphic tees. I definitely have picked up some bohemian style in some of your outfits, Jodie and it suits you. The skirt is lovely and I must comment on your mom’s shoes, they really add so much style and polish to the outfit. Good job, ladies!

    • It’s interesting how our style evolves, right??
I know I woudn’t have thought that t-shirts would be so appropriate once I got older…but some of the messages nowadays are just too true!!
      Thanks Rebecca!!!
      XOXO

  • Graphic tees are so much! That sewing machine shirt is hilarious!

    • Isn’t it funny?? And so, so true!

  • Laura

I have had a pair of gold sandals for years and had to replace them several times because of all the wear they get. They go with everything and add some sparkle to all your outfits! Love your monochromatic outfits and fun graphic tees!

    • That’s so good to know, Laura!! Because I was thinking these are going to be ready for an update, and I really wasn’t sure if I should get another gold pair or something else. There is only so much room in my shoe closet…ha ha!!
      Thanks!!
      OXOX

  • Congratulations on your participation! Fabulous! Your mother looks amazing! That tee is made for her. And your skirt….Oh la la, what a stunning colour!

    • Thanks Nancy!!
My mom actually has more graphic tees than I do—funny, right? But maybe that’s because she’s a bigger collector!!
      XOXO

  • I’ve definitely gotten away from wearing graphic tees…except ones that are hugely oversized that I love to sleep in (um, yeah, that’ll keep the spark in the marriage, lol).

Anyway… I SO love your beautiful skirt in every way possible! The flow in the pic with you walking…a stunner!

    • Ahhhh…your humor gets me smiling this morning, Em!! That is definitely one way to style a graphic tee!! Not sure I’ll put that on the blog..ha ha!!
      XOXO
