Animal Prints for the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s: As your Footwear

Don’t forget to enter the giveaway that is going on all week to celebrate our blogversary!!

Animal prints are definitely everywhere lately, and it’s not only the “cougars” that wear it!

The three of us did a series about wearing the same animal print items for 3 different occasions last year here, here & here.

Since animal prints are still going strong in the fashion world, I thought I’d take a look at them from a different angle and categorize them by items. We also did an entire series on leopard footwear here, here & here so for this post I had each of us wear different shoes compared to the series from last year. That goes to show that we have at least 2 pairs of animal print shoes each!! But I’ll rationalize that I think it’s a great way to add in a little interest and print to any outfit—anyone buying that?

Jodie’s (50’s) Outfit: I picked my animal print loafers for this post. I remember buying these online during a lunch break over 3 years ago. They were only $20, so I figured if I wore them 10 times, I’d be good. Well, needless to say, I’ve certainly gotten my money’s worth since then.

My flats are more of a black & white print, therefore, I used that color scheme as the background for my shirt too!

I wore this outfit to a Saturday brunch with 3 other women. Since the jacket is a little “businessy” (and the brunch was all fun), I thought I’d add in my velvet choker & fringe earrings to make it less serious!

You can’t tell in these pictures, but I am wearing a camisole under this shirt. You can see how it just rests at the waistband of my jeans, so if I raise my arms or move around too much, there’s skin exposed otherwise.

Jeans: Express-thrifted (here)~~Jacket: Escada-thrifted (similar here as a biker jacket and here as a bomber)~~Top: H&M (similar here for a good deal)~~Shoes: Ann Taylor (similar here a great deal in brown!!)~~Necklace: Charlotte Russe (similar here)~~Earrings: Trendz Boutique in Littleton (similar here)

Nancy’s (60’s) Outfit: Nancy’s animal print footwear for this post are her wedges. Since her shoes are in the brown family, I chose brown pieces with a bright purple thrown in for fun!

Women in their 50's, 60's, & 70's wearing animal prints.

I love how her wedges have the black heel. Since they are wedges, they tend to be easier to walk in than a skinny heel of the same height.

We added in some orange accessories for a little change. Nancy just bought this sun pendant at a holiday boutique fair, and I thought it looked great with the orange-brown from her shoes.

Women in their 50's, 60's, & 70's wearing animal prints.

I ended up really liking this outfit especially because of all the textures. The jacket is a suede and the jeans are coated and thus look almost like leather!

Jeans: Liverpool (similar here)~~Jacket: Cold Water Creek (similar here as a moto version)~~Top: Westbound (similar here)~~Shoes: Life Stride (similar here)~~Necklace: (similar here in a brown with more sparkles)~~Earrings: (similar here)

Charlotte’s (70’s) Outfit: Mom chose her leopard heels for this category! I paired her brown pants with them just like I did with Nancy, but I wanted to show a different color combination for mom.

Women in their 50's, 60's, & 70's wearing animal prints.

Mom’s shoes have a 2 inch heel, but at least the heel is not super skinny. It’s actually an easy to walk around in shoe! I love the black bow attached!

Women in their 50's, 60's, & 70's wearing animal prints.

We kept the accessories neutral, and didn’t match them to the pants and shoes. They are black instead, but I think with all of the black influences in the shoes & glasses, it doesn’t look too out of place.

Women in their 50's, 60's, & 70's wearing animal prints.

In a way, this really is the same recipe as Nancy’s outfit only reversed. We used the color for the topper for mom’s outfit instead of underneath. And mom’s yellow turtleneck could almost be considered a tan color.

Pants: Chaps (similar here in corduroy)~~Cardigan: Charter Club (similar here a different green )~~Top: Preview (similar here more gold)~~Shoes: Life Stride (similar here as a splurge with the bow, and here much less)~~Necklace: (similar here not quite as bulky!)~~Earrings: (similar here)

Animal print shoes look good with a surprising array of colors and prints. I adore them and often plan my outfits around them. Love the 3 ensembles above. Your jacket and Nancy’s and Charlotte’s necklaces are stunning.

  • PetiteOver40

I love the color combinations you’ve put with these animal print shoes, Jodie! Looking through Instagram and FB, I’m seeing breton stripes–like your shirt–in fall and winter apparel and I really like how you’ve incorporated them here! I’ve always seen them as a spring pattern, but you and others I’ve seen have shown they’re totally perfect for every season! Thanks for the great ideas!!

    Hugs,
    Sherry

I remember when I was first reading blogs, and the women would oooh & ahhh over the striped shirts and say they were obsessed with them. And I didn’t get it.
But for some reason, I ‘m now bitten by the same bug….they just seem so much more interesting than a plain shirt, yet they still go with everything!

  • Wow! I can see that animal print shoes are a hit with many other ladies. I am not alone. My favorites are the slip on sneaker and the short boot.

    • Jodie Filogomo

That means you’re a stylish woman, Deborah because animal print shoes are the best right now!!
      Thanks for stopping by!

  • Jodie, I love all of these shoes … I have always liked animal prints especially for shoes. I have a few pairs of animal print boots that I wear a lot during the Winter xo

I love these shoes. I have a pair similar to your but in gold and black. I need to wear them more, never thought of putting them on with my jeans

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Victoria!!
They are so fun!! It’s funny how some pairs get forgotten until we see them on others!!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Victoria!!
They are so fun!! It’s funny how some pairs get forgotten until we see them on others!!

  • I love me a good animal print. I think I had those same wedges! I had to get rid of them because they were half a size too small. I now have the same print but in a high heel sandal. LOVE!
    #teamlovinlife

    • Jodie Filogomo

They are the bestest at adding just a touch of sass to almost any outfit, eh?
Thanks so much for stopping by Leanne!

  • writeofthemiddle

Gosh you are three stylish ladies!! Love everything! I don’t own anything in animal print! Nothing! I think I might need to change that. I love all three pairs of those shoes! #TeamLovinLife

    • Jodie Filogomo

I’m shocked you don’t have any animal print Min!! But I know that it used to be considered not sophisticated (for lack of a better word)!
But it’s such a common print now—and the varieties are endless!!

  • Kirsten Wick

Really like your outfit Jodie especially because it has stripes in it 🙂 They leopard flats go great with everything. Happy weekend. Love, Kirsten

    http://www.thelifbissue.com

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Kirsten—i have become a stripe addict–it’s seems so silly, but they really go with everything!!

  • I’ve got some animal print espadrilles at the moment that I love. Of course it’s summer here in Oz so they’ll be shelved for a few months! #teamlovinlife

    • Jodie Filogomo

They sound fabulous—usually I wear my espadrilles in summer too? Am I just strange??
      Thanks for the love Deborah!!

  • Amy D. Christensen

Jodie, you did such a neat job putting these outfits together. All your shoes are so cute! But I love the intentionality you had when putting these outfits together. I really shows. Great post. – Amy

      Thanks so much Amy!!

  • More and more, I’m approaching animal print like a neutral. You see leopard shoes with black dresses all the time, but this shows more casual, wearable ways to style them for everyday. I’m really liking the styles you featured in this roundup too. The simple cheetah flats are just my style, and I’m quite taken with those zebra slingbacks!

I think shoes are one of the best ways to add in some fun to any outfit and there are so many varieties of animal print shoes, that it’s hard not to buy them all!!
      Thanks for stopping by, Liz!!

  • Love your animal print shoes. Personally, I’m not a big fan of animal print in clothes, but the shoes are lovely. 🙂 #TeamLovinLife

    • Jodie Filogomo

Well then Lyndall, you won’t love today’s post as much because we are wearing the print in our clothing!! But that’s the fabulous thing about style—it’s more fun if we’re all different!!
Thanks so much for your voice!! Happy Thursday!!

  • I love animal print though I’ve never had it in a shoe, wasn’t sure I would successfully be able to work it into an outfit, so love your inspo here x

    • Jodie Filogomo

I think it’s almost easier in a shoe Janet—because it’s not really the focal point!!
I think if you get a pair, you’d be surprised at how much they go with—at least I was!!
Thanks for stopping by and Happy Thursday!

  • Debbie Stinedurf

Animal print shoes are the perfect way to add some interest to an outfit so owning multiple pairs is absolutely justified…I love how you and I enable each other all of the time…lol! Love your loafers and both your mom and Nancy’s shoes are fabulous as well. Good idea to feature a flat, a wedge and a pump!

I think it’s extremely smart to surround myself with enablers—then I don’t have that guilt thing going on! And we all know how bad that is for our health!! So really it’s a healing practice!!
      How’s that for rationalization?
      Thanks for the love, Debbie!!

  • kristin mccarthy

    • Jodie Filogomo

They really do go with everything, don’t you think?
It’s kinda one of those pieces that I think any woman, any age group can wear!!
      Thanks for stopping by Sarah!

  • Mary Kalpos

Jodie what fun shoes! I used to have a pair of boots in animal prints when I was young. Maybe I should become daring again.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Of course you should be daring again….life’s way too short for boring shoes! It’s time to have fun with clothing, I’ve decided!!

  • My favorite way to wear animal print is to incorporate them in shoes!

There are many details of you outfit that I love: the velvet choker ( which really makes the jacket less serious! ) The jacket ( a delightful shade of pink) and, of course, the loafers!
Good inspiring ideas for my next outfits… 🙂

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks for such a nice comment Dan!!
I like this outfit so much, I think I wore it for about 3 days straight!!

  • AModernMomBlog

I love that all of you have a different version of animal print shoes! I think my favorite are the wedges. You all three look so classy with just a touch of print

Thanks Carly!! The funny thing is all 3 of us have other versions of the animal print shoes—they just work for so many occasions (plus we’re old and have had time to accumulate them–ha ha)

Leopard is such a versatile animal print! I have a pair of flats and heels that I love adding as a way of pattern mixing in an outfit or as added interest. I just love all the outfits you came up with!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks so much Laura!!

  • Great choices. I have had at least one pair of animal print shoes in the closet for at least 10 years now, wether on trend or not. They’ve become basics: my faves are leopard print and zebra.

    • Jodie Filogomo

You’re so right—they are basically a basic!! I just love how they go with almost everything!
      Thanks for stopping by Lorena!

  • Carrie @ Curly Crafty Mom

I have been wanting some leopard booties, but I do have flats and sandals! 🙂 I love your loafers, too!! Who knew there were so many different styles of leopard shoes out there?! Even wedges!

    Carrie

    • Jodie Filogomo

I think leopard booties are the bomb….Nancy has a pair and I’m a little sorry I didn’t snag them also! But I have a pair of tall snakeskin boots, so I struggle with how many I really need, right?

  • I think your Mom’s look is my favourite here. Also I really like those shoes she is wearing.

    • Charlotte Miller

Thank you, I’ve had them for some time and they are so comfortable.

Isn’t she marvelous—I can only hope to grow up and be as fabulous as she is!!

  • Fabulous! I am such a leopard print fan!

    • Jodie Filogomo

It is such a fun print, right, Nancy?
      Thanks!!

  • Mireille

Cute shoes!! I guess I should pull my leopard flats out of the closet and plan an outfit around them 😊

    • Jodie Filogomo

That’s exactly what you should do Mireille!! And send me an photo email of it—I’d love to see what you put together!!

  • Judy Gramith

    Cute ,cute, cute!!!!
I love the way you ‘ve done a bit of pattern mixing here Jodie. The close up of you balancin on the boulder is cool.
Nancy’s colors are fun and I really like her new sun burst necklace! Her fashionable “walking shots” are cool!
Charlotte has won my fashion heart this time. PERHAPS it’s because she is earth tones from head to toe and I think that allows the shoes to growl at us more completely. Also her shoes are my favorite. The cute bow won my heart!!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Aren’t mom’s shoes just so wonderful? And to think she’s had them for many years? She’s such a fashion statement!!
Thanks for the wonderful words, Jude!!

  • All three of you look so fabulous. The animal print shoes are divine but it’s the creative color combos that are the winner with this post. I especially adore the black accessory accents in Charlotte’s outfit as well as the purple and brown in Nancy’s and your jacket, Jodie. Three thumbs up!

Such nice outfits all around! I love a touch of leopard and the pink jacket has given me an idea as well. I have a similar style, but tweed. Definitely some great flair!

Tweed is so perfect for this time of year Suzy!! It’s definitely time to pull it out and have fun with it (and funny you say that, because it’s on my blog schedule for the middle of December!!)

  • Oh! I LOVE all your animal print shoes! Animal print flats have been on my list forever! By the time I get around to buying some the trend will have long gone. But then again, animal print never really goes out of style, right?

I like all three outfits and the color choices involved, but your pink jacket is the outstanding piece. Love those “buttons.”

    • Jodie Filogomo

Isn’t this jacket so pretty?? I am such a sucker for a good jacket—it keeps me warm and hides many sins. And to find them at the thrift store is doubly great!!
      Thanks for the love Janet!

  • Love mixing this print into outfits! I never realized until this year how versatile they are with so many different color schemes. Your post completely illustrates that. Would have avoided a b&w version until I saw what YOU did with it. New inspiration for me!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Em!
I love how the print is so mainstream now, and not sleazy—that and the fact that retailers are making it in fun and different colors!!
      Happy Tuesday!!
