Ankle Pants for the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s: The Dressy Version

Quote of the day: “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.” Henry David Thoreau

The ankle pant may not be your first thought when you think of dressing up for a special occasion. But like I pointed out in the last post, the shorter length makes them ideal for switching from flats to heels. This is perfect  if you’re going from a casual outing to a more formal one later. Besides, I have recognized that our society has become very casual, even in it’s formal definitions! I paired these exact same ankle pants with t-shirts for a casual look (here) and then with toppers for a smart look (here).

Jodie’s Outfit: This is one of my favorite silk blouses that used to be my friend Bethany’s (see her story here). Unfortunately, the sleeve seams started pulling apart. Thus mom and I came up with a solution. Mom sewed in this sheer material for new sleeves and even added back the existing wristbands on them. I think the sheer sleeves make it quite dressy when I’m going for that look, yet I could wear a blazer over it, and it’d still be office appropriate!

I especially love the ankle pants with these shoes. If I wear normal length pants with them, you can’t appreciate all the straps! And the fact that the shoes were only $12 make them even better!!

Nancy’s Outfit: For this post, I had Nancy wear pink on the top portion to pull out the pink flowers in the pants. I really feel like you notice the pink in the trousers more this way!

We accessorized with the gold to try to give it a more formal look. For some reason, I’m very drawn to the longer necklaces with the opened cardigans.

Charlotte’s Outfit: When I see mesh items advertised, they are usually with sporty or athletic pieces. However, I placed mom’s mesh top over a silky, sleeveless turtleneck along with a statement necklace. I was hoping that keeping it all black & white with the turquoise pants would add the desired dressiness look.

Pants: Talbots-thrifted (here)~~Mesh Top: from Japan (similar here this one even has an applique)~~Shirt Under: Mom made it (similar here)~~Shoes: Charter Club (similar here)~~Necklace: (similar here)~~Earrings: (similar here)~~Bracelet 1: (similar here)~~Bracelet 2: (similar here)

I really appreciate the time you take out of your day to read my blog.

Since a great necklace can be the perfect accessory, I thought I’d hunt some down for you (and they are all under $40 so you could get two!!):

  • Kathleen McDermott

Love all 3 outfits, though Nancy’s does not look dressy to me. Your blouse is stunning, and I love Charlotte’s mesh vest and delicate blouse. Your outfit is my fav again, with Charlotte a close second!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I have to agree with you about Nancy’s outfit! But it’s always amazing to me how casual some people are in reality! Even when I say “dressy” some people still think jeans—ugh!!!
      XOXO

  • Amy D. Christensen

Great looks! I agree, the length of your pants really shows off the pretty sandals you have on. Your mom is so talented. Those sleeves are so pretty and really dress up the shirt. I love the longer length necklaces too, especially with the open front cardi’s. Mom’s outfit is very nice and I think the mesh really makes it look dressier than it might have with another type of top. – Amy

      Thanks Amy!!

  • Wow, so many fabulous ideas in this post. Jodie, you are so right about cropped pants so versatile with regards to choice of shoes and I think that shorter length really allows the shoes to shine. Love how you and your mother swapped out the sleeves of your blouse. That was a brilliant solution. Thank you for sharing your post on my Up Down All-Around link-up.

      Thanks Rena!!

  • Laura

The sheer sleeves in your top was such a brilliant fix! It really makes the top much dressier. And I love how you layered the mesh top. The statement necklace over top is made for it!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Laura!!
I’m really glad I saved this shirt—I just love the colors of it!!
My mom loves her statement necklace—I keep telling her to wear it more often!!

  • Love love love each look! The sleeve fix? Pure genius!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Daenel!
I must be hard on my silk shirts, because this happened to another one of them, and for that one, I had mom add a sliver of another material at the juncture! I usually don’t have issues getting rid of things, but …

  • All gorgeous! I have really enjoyed this series. Have a great day! Gemma x

      Thanks Gemma!!

  • Mother Daughter

All three great looks. Your mother did a wonderful job on the sleeves of your blouse. I also have a thing right now for long necklaces, my problem is I buy but forget to wear. lol

    • Jodie Filogomo

I used to have that problem about forgetting to wear some of my accessories—until I finally put them all in one area—now I feel naked without them!!
      Thanks for the love!!

  • I can’t get over how cool your mum looks. Hers is an outfit I’d happily wear, with maybe switching the pants to jeans. Look at those cuffs and her necklace. I die.

    • Jodie Filogomo

She has amassed an abundance of fabulous pieces over the years! And I think she’s been trying to stop matching everything lately!! I plan to grow up to be just like her 🙂

  • I really like the ankle pants with heels! Great looks! I love Bethany’s blouse with the sheer sleeves! Your mom did a fantastic job! She has amazing sewing skills!

      Thanks for the wonderful compliments!

    Lovely ladies!!
You are wearing my favorite styling this time Jodie. Love the teal colors and the story behind the blouse makes it a great treasure. What a uniquely loving way to honor Bethany’s memory and your friendship with her.

Charlotte is looking especially hip in the black mesh top and what a cool necklace! Might be fun to add that owl ring when she wears this outfit (to sip a cocktail ) at some event.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks so much Judy!! I am a huge fan of teal—it usually looks good with my complexion! And knowing this blouse used to be Bethany’s makes it quite sentimental!
Mom can’t wait to wear her new ring—-it’s funny how she loves owls so much!!

      • Judy Gramith

Hadn’t told you yet but I had a thing about owls with MY mom ( owls, chickadees, turtles and owls) Please tell Charlotte that “I get it” I don’t collect them in quite the way that she does but I think they’re a very nobel bird!

        • Jodie Filogomo

          🙂

  • Pam miller

Really enjoyed your discussion on ankle pants-among my favorites. Bethany would be loving what you’ve done to her blouse. It always touches my heart when you mention her. Love, Bethany’s Mom, Pam

    • Jodie Filogomo

So nice to hear from you Pam….This was one of my favorites of Bethany’s–(of course, she had such great taste, that I liked everything), but this blouse was especially wonderful. You can’t really tell in the photos, but the way it shines always looked so nice! I really was upset when I saw it tearing…that’s why I wanted to fix it!
Thanks for commenting—I love that you still read my blog!

  • All three looks are winners! Love the refashion on your blouse and your mom’s mesh top and statement necklace.

      Thanks Darlene!!
Refashioning the shirt is almost as good as going thrifting, right?

  • Queen of Rods

Love all three outfits; especially the refashion of your silk blouse…and those shoes!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Janet—my mom is amazing with her sewing skills—it’s truth!!
And I do love my heels!! I’ve decided one of my goals is to go to my grave with them—no old lady shoes for me—ha ha!!
