Another Option with Camo is our Beloved Denim

Quote of the day: “What is a weed? A plant whose virtues have not yet been discovered.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

I had to include this quote with our camo and denim post because it really spoke to me. I know I’ve been very guilty of judging certain styles or prints back in the day! Certainly the camo print was one of those things I thought it would never be on my body! But look at me now! And I cajoled my mom, Nancy and even Kathleen to play along!!

It was Kathleen’s idea to pair the denim with our camo print for these looks!! I know last year when we styled these items, I was thinking about colors, so it worked great to have this year be about material instead!! There was also the fun post where we styled these same camo pieces with lace!

Kathleen (blogette): And welcome back to Kathleen!! I was so glad to see Kathleen style a light colored pair of denim jeans with the camo, since the three of us had worn darker styles!

And Kathleen wanted to point out that both this outfit and the one from the camo and lace post, were head to toe either TJ Maxx or Marshall’s clearance items. It’s the perfect example of how you don’t have to spend a lot of money to look great!!

The other detail that I found fabulous with Kathleen’s outfit is the fact that she mixed her prints also! Adding the floral shirt under the camo jacket, makes it look less hunterish!!

Denim with our camo

Jodie’s (50+) Outfit: I admit that I wasn’t sure if you all would like the 2 prints that I put together. I know that it’s helpful to use 2 different scales of the print when mixing them, and both of my prints seem about the same size.

Ever since we started mixing prints here on the blog, I’ve really been trying to consciously style more prints together. Sometimes I’m successful, and sometimes I do question the look! That’s why with this outfit, I added in the yellow for the shoes, belt and sunglasses. I was hoping to tie everything together this way!!

I’ve always thought that yellow sandals are the perfect summer shoe. They can add just enough color to an outfit whether the outfit has yellow in it or not.  Here is a pair if you are concerned about comfort and then here is a pair with some beautiful embroidery!!

Camo and denim with prints

We took these photos right after I received my first Rocksbox set. I recently explored the pros and cons with this service, and have been trying my darnest to see how much jewelry I can try out in the next 3 months!! If you’d like to see how the service works, you can sign up for a free month with the code Jtouchofstylexoxo! One blogger I talked to says she loves it because it keeps her jewelry collection culled!!

Since this was my first set, I was hesitant to buy this necklace!! But it’s one of those regret moments, as I really love all of the possibilities with what I have in my closet!! In fact, I requested to receive it again, and if I’m lucky enough to get it; I’ll buy it this time!!

denim with my rocksbox

For the denim in this outfit, I grabbed my polka dot denim, off-the-shoulder shirt! This off the shoulder detail is one of those trends that I thought I’d pass up when it first came out. However, I have to tell you that for some unknown reason, I really like it!

I purchased this shirt while I was trying out the extension as something to get with my free shipping!  The company also offered $25 to the first 500 of my readers to use their service and then fill out a quick survey. If you haven’t done that yet, feel free to use this link.

I tried to show that I only tucked in the front portion of my shirt. I know there are many times when I don’t tuck my shirt in at all, that I feel somewhat sloppy! Or at least with this shirt, I almost looked pregnant–eeek!!

Nancy’s (60+) Outfit: For Nancy’s denim addition to her camo blouse, she chose her capri jeans.

In a way, both Nancy & my mom are wearing the same length denim. The big difference is the silhouette of their jeans. Well, besides the wash of the denim is different too! Maybe that’s why the stores sell so much in denim nowadays, because there is so much variety.

Because of that fact, I decided to showcase all different kinds of denim items at the bottom of this post!! Browse to your hearts content!! In fact, the ones that I linked to that are similar to Nancy’s are a fabulous deal, if you are looking for fitted denim capris.

Camo & denim jeans

You can see that Nancy’s blouse is a little sheer, so she put one of her Mod Loops under it instead of a camisole. We discovered these Mod Loops when we were at our neighborhood boutique, Trendz just a couple of months ago!! Both Nancy and I bought a couple of these items, so I’m sure you’ll be seeing them a lot!! In fact, Nancy had her other one on in our other camo post as her lace item.

Since my M.O. is to look at both the good and bad of everything, let me tell you a little more about these Mod Loops. Since it’s just a piece of lace, they are very lightweight and you forget that you have it on. That’s nice when it’s really hot outside and you’d rather not wear a camisole. I’ve worn it at my hips almost like a lace extender, and it stayed put better. When I wore mine under a shirt, because the armholes gaped, it did tend to slide down easier. Now, I just need to come up with a solution to keep it up!

And then check out the cutest shoes that Nancy just bought!! They are a lace up, print espadrille!! I haven’t mentioned espadrilles as much lately, since summer seems to be winding down. But maybe this is the perfect time to find a pair. Usually at the end of the season, these items will be on sale, yet they will still be stylish for next summer! To help you out, I found a couple of pairs for you that are under $30, here, here, here or even here!!

We kept Nancy’s accessories pretty subtle with a metal necklace, bracelets and light yellow earrings!! The necklace is one that Nancy got on her Greece trip!! These kind of souvenirs are the best because you can wear them over and over, and they don’t take up a lot of room in your suitcase to bring them home!!

And see, how the camo works in this photo?? She almost blends into the background! LOL!!

Charlotte’s (70+) Outfit: So the other difference between my mom and Nancy’s denim and camo outfits are the styling.

My mom still doesn’t mind tucking in her shirts, whereas, Nancy rarely does! I’d love to hear your thoughts about this detail. Do you tuck or leave shirts untucked??

Of course if you like to tuck in your shirts, then you probably also have a variety of belts. The two seem to go together!! I’ve always wondered why belts are so expensive? While I was looking for a similar belt to my mom’s, I did find some other fun inexpensive ones like the double version or the wrap version!

Camo blouse and denim culottes

Notice that my mom even chose neutral shoes instead of trying to match her footwear to her shirt! I can’t quite remember if I pushed for these or not, but either way I love them!!

I think the metallic shoes are going to be quite popular this fall and winter!! I’m on the hunt for a pair of silver booties for myself. If you like that idea too, then these could float your boat, or these are totally fun!!

denim with our camo for women over 70

Even my mom kept her jewelry relatively simple with a matching necklace and bracelet along with gold hoop earrings. But I will have you notice that the gold accessories are a different metal than the silver belt! I know we were brought up with the rule that metals had to match, but that rule is no longer existent, so feel free to mix it up!!

denim culottes with camo for 70+ women

Let’s talk about the culottes for a minute!! This pair is from our local boutique where we had the funnest event in June! I actually think the culottes are fabulous for us older women. Younger women look great in them too, but let me tell you how great these have been on my mom!

For one thing, they aren’t as tight, so my mom feels more comfortable in them. And since they have a different silhouette than what we’ve been wearing lately, they are super fun! I can totally see these with boots in the winter, since I’m always trying to make pieces more versatile!! And it’s not like you have to spend a ton for a pair of these. I found this pair on sale and this pair is great too!

I’m sure we all have a ton of denim in our closets, since it seems like it’s the staple of stores lately!! So pairing a camo piece with denim is truly a modern take on masculine style! What do you think?

Thanks to one and all of you for your support. It means more than you know!

  • Nice ideas. I love camo.

  • Sue Loncaric

Looking good ladies. I don’t wear denim much but like your mum’s shirt.

    • I certainly didn’t wear it much while I was working…but I have to admit that it’s invaded my closet like no other!!
      Thanks Sue!

  • I’m usually careful about mixing prints. I like the way your dots look with the camo, but that first image combo left me cold. Mom and grandmom look fab.

  • I like the abstract nature of your Mom’s abstract print. And I can put both of you on my collage this week-Cool!

  • Love the dress from Macy’s.

  • Love your polka dot off-the-shoulders top Jodie! I am wearing a gingham off-the-shoulders top (or mini dress) in my new post, talk about great minds! Well, it’s a popular style for sure. I love the details on Nancy’s capris and of course, capris are my favourite! Your mom looks great in her denim culottes.

    • Thanks so much Carmen!!
I can’t wait to see your post!!

  • Anna Marcus

Camo and polka dots are both quite distinctive prints and i think you really nailed it Jodi. The yellow accessories add just the right amount of freshness and fun. Love Nancy’s style a lot

  • I swore I wouldn’t wear camo either. I think it was the whole association with hunting animals (or people?). But I caved and bought a pair of camo jeans from Loft three years ago and just love them. I have paired mine with a pink tee with crocheted lace. But would never think to try the pattern mixing that you did so well with that ots polka dot top! And adding the yellow accessories is genius. Not sure why you aren’t in Paris designing your own line of clothing!!

The mums look wonderful, too. Nancy’s little lace balconette is a great idea. Her camo print reminds me of oak leaves. So pretty. And Charlotte’s SILK blouse! Silk camo! Great contrast. Love that play between the masculine print and the feminine fabric.

Wish I had seen your camo shorts at the beginning of the season. Will keep them in mind for next spring or perhaps I will find a pair on sale?

    • I found these shorts at the thrift store—because I wasn’t sure I’d really wear them!! Funny, how our perspective can change over time, huh??
Did you see my new camo jeans on IG? I found a pair at another thrift store and then even paired them with leopard shoes—a little crazy, but fun!!
Thanks for all the wonderful thoughts—I forwarded this to both mom and Nancy so they could appreciate your kindness!!!

  • I don’t own any camo 🙁 maybe I’ll look into getting some! I always have my tops untucked…

  • Mother Daughter

I love camo. lol I own not one piece but have been on the look out for pants in pink camo. Saw someone wear a pr of these so I am on the search. I like the denim camo combo.

    • I think the pink camo would be the funnest ever. Are you still selling LuLaRoe? You should request that print in their leggings?

      • Mother Daughter

No we no longer sell Lularoe, it became too much work for very little reward. They did have camo leggings for awhile though not in pink.

  • Alternative Ageing

    Thanks Jodie. x

  • Your outfit is so cute! Those legs 🙂

    • Thanks Leanne…and you’re making me blush….

    • Thanks so much Julia! It’s nice to have you back in our blog world. At least until the next mountain comes that you need to climb…..
Have a great weekend…I just read your post, so I’m sending lots of love!!

  • Debbie Stinedurf

Love, love, love your outfit Jodie! That denim polka dot top could not be better than paired with the camo shorts. 🙂

    • Thanks Debbie!!! The funny thing is I didn’t even think of this top as denim at first—it’s funny how we categorize pieces in our mind!!
      Have a great weekend!!

  • Super cute outfits! And I just love the pop of yellow in your outfit, Jodie!

    • Thanks LIndsey!! I felt like I needed to brighten it up somehow!!

  • Rosy Ferry

      Have a great weekend!

  • Nicole Mölders

Thanks for joining the Top of the World Style linkup party with your post.Camouflage is such a great print. It goes with so many other prints and colors.

    • Thanks Nicole!! It really has become a fun and modern print—shocking to me, but true!!
      Have a great weekend!!

  • Judy Gramith

Late to comment due to my week of traveling to visit with beloved friends before our move. Jodie , I’m completely in love with your great necklace and that polka dot top looks so cute on you!
I can’t decide if these 2 patterns please my eye but I think you’ve become quite a brave pattern mixer!
Nancy’s denim rolled capris are great with the camo shirt and Charlotte has hit a new high here. Her unique camo print with the blue in it combined with the culottes is quite the sophisticated/chique look!!

    • Are you getting ready to move, now? Is it that time already??? I’m sure it’ll be fun, but crazy and stressful too! I can’t wait to hear all about it in October!!!
Thanks for the love, even during all your upheaval, Jude!!

  • Camouflage is one of my fave prints! I love how you ladies styled these outfits! Camou rocks!

    – Cielo
    Mermaid in Heels

    • It is so fun to find a great way to wear this print!!!
      Thanks Cielo!!

  • Miriam Zakharova

    wow you look amazing!

  • Itzel Najar
  • I love that you paired with with a polka denim top! And the pops of yellow are perfect!

  • Camo print is my favorite! I love all of this inspiration! Your polka dot is so cute styled with the camo!

    Doused in Pink

    • Thanks Jill!! It was a fun pairing, even though my husband wasn’t too sure about it?

  • I adore your blouse. A pretty pattern and goes well with that camo. I don’t have camo in my closet arsenal. I need to correct that.

    • It’s funny how now that I have some camo, I’m a little hooked on it!!
It seems so modern and fun!!
      Thanks Anna!

  • I don’t think I have a single garment with camo, but I definitely have men in my life who have lots of it. 🙂 And pairing it with denim is their go-to. So why can’t women do it also? Love these combinations, Jodie!

    • It wasn’t long ago, I could say the same thing Lisa!! But it’s been amazing to me how all of the fashion “gurus” are starting to use this print more and more!!

  • Denim is always a great option! Love how you did it as a top and even mixed prints!

    Amy Ann
    Straight A Style

  • Oh wow J! polka dots and camo !! its the first i have ever seen and it looks over the top 🙂 great pattern mix.

    • Thanks Lorena!!! I’m glad it went over well—I was a little worried it was too much!!

  • Your mom looks adorable, Jodie! Well done, ladies!

    • Thanks so much Mary!!
I’ll forward this to my mom so she can smile too!

    • Charlotte Miller

      Thanks very much, Mary

  • the camo is so fun! great looks ladies!

  • These are great camo looks! It’s funny I realized I don’t usually wear my camo with denim and it is the prefect combo! Peace!

    • I know I didn’t think of it with denim at first because I was always trying to lighten it up more!! But it seem obvious, right??
      Thanks Cheryl!!

  • Love the camp with the polka dots Jodie! Have a great day.

    Gemma x

  • I can’t say I’m a big fan of camo – the colours are just not “me” but I like it in your shorts because you can add some prettier colour near your face to balance things out.

    • I totally get that, Leanne!!
In fact the new camo jeans I just thrfited have more blues in them, and are more my colors!! But it’s good that we don’t all dress alike, I think??

  • writeofthemiddle

Some great looks here Jodie! I am LOVING that polka dot top of yours!! 🙂 #TeamLovinLife

  • Oh, great combinations Jodie and it’s always a bit weird seeing your outfits given your seasons vs ours. Of course our pathetic attempts at winter here in Australia are basically over so we’ll soon be wearing shorts and no sleeves.

I haven’t bought any new jeans in quite a few years and was surprised I rarely wore them this year. But I do like denim. #teamlovinlife

    • It is amazing to think that we are half a world apart, Deb!!
But denim is one of those items that has really taken the world by storm, don’t you think?? Maybe it’s the 70’s influence?? Or the fact we’ve gotten so casual??

  • Nancy is definitely getting the full effect of the cammo, haha, and I’m totally with you on requesting your rocksbox necklace again because you regretted not purchasing it! I did that once, and got it a second time so that I could, lol.
    Chic on the Cheap

    • I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only one with the regret for a necklace, Lydia!!

  • I don’t own anything camo, but all of you look fabulous! I may have to give it a try at some point after all…

    Andrea’s Wellness Notes

    • That’s why my shorts were bought at a thrift store, Andrea!! I wasn’t sure I’d really like it!
But I have to admit that I’m hooked. For some reason it seems so modern and fun!!!

  • Len Dela Peña Parent

You ladies are effortlessly gorgeous! You are rocking all these outfits!

    What a true inspiration!
    Keep it coming!
    Have a wonderful week!
    Much love, Len

    • Thanks Len!!
You always know how to make me smile…
      Enjoy your hump day!!

  • You’re outfit is super cute! BTW: Just saw another blogger style camo with a red/white striped shirt. It looked fab together!

  • I love your camo and polka dot combo Jodie! You girls are finding the best uses for the lace extenders too, I love the idea of using it to cover gaping arm holes!

    Pumps and Push-Ups

  • Love this combo! I have camo pants that I haven’t worn in sooo long. I need to pull them out asap

    • I kinda felt the same way—even my shorts didn’t get much wear this summer!! Fall seems to be the time to wear it though, so I can’t wait to see it on you!!

  • I love the print mixing with several of these looks! I’m so glad you keep that necklace Jodie. It’s gorgeous!

    • Isn’t this necklace so pretty, Kathrine? I felt like I already had so much blue jewelry in my collection—but what’s one more??

  • I have never been a fan of camo but you girls styled so well that now I want to wear it! Loving these outfits, have a fantastic week!

    My Vogue Style |

    • It surprises me too, Cami. Never in a hundred years would I think that I’d be wearing this print for fun!! But it goes to show that it’s good to have an open mind!!!
      Thanks Cami!!

  • donnanance

Fabulous post! Denim and camo seem to be made for each other. Jodie, your pattern mixing is spot on. Your necklace is perfect with that cute top…love the sleeve detail and the peek of blue. Nancy couldn’t have chosen a better pair of sandals. Love her capris… a cuffed and tabbed hem is one of my favorite looks. Your mom’s metallic shoes are the perfect touch for her camo and culottes outfit. Did she have to hem them so they didn’t hang down to her ankles? We short gals have that problem, you know. xoxo

    • Wow…thanks so much for all of the accolades, Donna!! I made sure to forward this comment to both mom & Nancy!!!
And originally, mom’s culottes did hang almost to her ankles. You can see how they looked straight from the store:
But at least we can shorten them….when you’re tall it’s much harder to lengthen items!!!

    • Charlotte Miller

    • Charlotte Miller

Yes, I did shorten them about 3 1/2 inches keeping the original hem with all the top-stitching. Also took in the waist which made the back pockets stick out, so I fused them close. Just necessary fitting.

  • Fabulous! I love denim and camo!

    • I’m not sure I would have thought of it by myself, but it’s a fun combo!!
      Thanks Nancy!

  • Mireille

This styling ideas are great! Love your choice of prints, your mom’s shoes are super cute and Nancy’s outfit is perfect!

    • Thanks so much Mireille!!
Mom and Nancy will love to read this from you!!

  • The camo/denim pairing is great… but your oufit’s pattern mixing and accessories is SO fashion forward to me!

All tied together with the yellow shoes and belt…not to mention that beautiful necklace!

Jodie, you make it look so effortless yet so “meant to be.” Head to toe perfection!!!! 👌🏻

    • Thanks so much for saying this, Em. Because I had moments of doubt, you know!
I think the print mixing is easier when the colors match, but when they don’t I sometimes wonder if it looks like I got dressed in the dark–LOL!!

  • Karen

First of all, I often wish I’d just be brave and cuff my jeans like Kathleen did. I think it has to do with where I live and this place being kind of behind the times unless you are 17, but when you do something like this type of cuff and go somewhere, people stare, and not in a good way. And I’ve heard comments and vowed I’d never do that again. I think it is peculiar to my little backward city!
I love the color of her jeans! Your prints work well together regardless of scale because they are so different. I think the choice of yellow shoes and accessories was great and adds that pop of color with an otherwise more neutral palette! How is the off the shoulder top when you raise your arms? I don’t own one, considered them very pretty and feminine but to me they look high maintenance. Everyone is pictured in them on blogs with their arms to their sides. What happens to the neckline if you lift your arms over your head? I’ve always wondered, Guess I could try one on and find out! And seriously Jodie, you hardly look pregnant! Good grief! Love Nancy’s fitted capris and not surprised to see they are NYDJ, those always tend to fit well. She nailed the length once again. The picture of Nancy sitting down…she looks like she’s in her 20’s in that photo! I love her espadrilles and need to check out some of the sales to pick up a pair. I LOVE your mom’s culottes!! I am really liking those wider leg cropped bottoms for some reason, having tried them on. She looks so stylish! Her neutral shoes were a great choice. It lengthens her leg line perfectly! All great looks!!

    • It’s shocking to me that people would stare just because of a cuffed jean—it’s not like you’re parading around naked, LOL!! But I’m sure it is different in the smaller towns. People are used to only one way to dress, and everything else is crazy??
As for your question about the OFS shirts—some of them do ride up when you raise your arms!! And then I leave them up, for awhile. There is a trick using a rubber band and safety pins that supposedly keeps them down, but I haven’t tried it yet!! Maybe next summer….
And thanks for the ever positive thoughts and comments for all of us!
I can’t tell you how much I love reading your thoughtful comments every time a post comes out, Karen!

  • Tina von tinaspinkfriday

Wow you look all soo amazing! Every style is great. I wish you a nice wednesday, XO Tina
