Black & White for the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s: Along with our Favorite Color

Quote of the day: “Here’s what I say about aging: It’s really scary when you’re looking at it from the outside. When you’re inside it, it’s not scary at all. You feel better.” Jane Fonda

Just like Nancy pointed out in her response to the question asked in the last post on the merits of black & white (here), pairing these neutrals with a color is a great way to make the color pop. The easy thing (as Nancy & I are showing) is to wear a black & white striped shirt with your color of choice (okay—this wasn’t really planned that Nancy and I would wear similar shirts, but they still are a little different, right?). Or like the outfit mom is wearing, you could combined three different solid pieces!

I asked the three of us about our favorite color—who/what/where/when or why? Eve & Sheela are joining us again for their take on this topic.

Jodie’s Outfit: My favorite color has changed over the years, but right now, it has to be yellow! I have so much of it, that Darlene, one of my blogging friends, wondered if I need an intervention–ha ha!! I think I’ve been gravitating towards it recently because it’s bright and fun! It’s a happy color and I’m doing what makes me happy!

The skirt was one of those impulse buys at least 4 years ago! We happened to have an extra couple minutes before a party we were attending, so I popped in the Loft, saw it and snapped it up—I even wore it that night because it looked better than the skirt I had originally put on!

I have a confession…I never understood the love of striped shirts, until I bought one. For some reason it’s such a fun print, and I can’t quite figure out why. But I now have 3 different colored ones in my closet—eek!!

Nancy’s Outfit: Nancy discusses that she started liking the color pink only after she was in a fashion show in high school. They had dressed her in a pink and white dress and so many people complimented her on that color and on how it worked beautifully with her complexion. Since then, she admits to having a hard time staying away from pink!

You can see that Nancy’s sporting some block heeled sandals as well. She actually has had these for years and was getting ready to throw them out, when she saw my post on the new trend in shoes (here).

Nancy would have only worn the shorter necklace because the longer one covers the buttons! I say the more the merrier. Have you been layering your necklaces?

Charlotte’s Outfit: Mom doesn’t remember why blue is her favorite color, but she can remember that it was the case as far back as junior high school. She has the memory of looking at all her clothes hanging in her room (they didn’t have closets in the up-stair bedrooms) and everything looked blue so to remedy that, the next dress she purchased was red! Of course, there is still a ton of blue in her house to this day!!

First, we have to thank mom’s neighbor, Madonna, for letting us pose by her gorgeous poppy & irises….some people have such a green thumb!

This bracelet mom is wearing was actually her grandmother’s bracelet. It’s such a classic design, you’d never realize it was from a different decade!

Sheela’s Outfit: So mom isn’t the only one who loves her blues!!! Click over to Sheela Writes to read Sheela’s writings. Sheela is always expounding on many a philosophical subject— she shows off an amazing outfit (and shoes), but it’s not her focus!

Eve’s Outfit: So I guess we can say blue is the winner, since Eve chose it also! They say that blue is the most popular color in the world!! Make sure to visit The World According to Eve for her feature!! She takes after her mother in the fascinating shoe department!!

Thanks Osy—it is fun to pair with other bloggers, because it can make you think outside what you normally do all the time!!

  • Mother of 3

They’re all so lovely. I wear a lot of black and white usually paired with blue, pink or green.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Ooooh….the green would be a great one that we didn’t do!! Thanks so much for chiming in!!

  • Hi Jodie! I love the black and white! I totally understand you being stuck on yellow. I have been stuck on this salmon/orangey color for 2 seasons now lol … I love it because it’s bright and fun just like you with your yellow! Nancy looks stunning in pink … I agree it is definitely her color! Thanks for sharing at #SimplifyWednesdays pinned and tweeted!

    • Jodie Filogomo

It’s nice to hear you crushing on a fun color Carla!!
      Thanks for giving your voice!!

  • Yellow is my favorite color too! Although I love wearing black & white with all 3 of these shades!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Michelle!! I think you’re the first that admits to liking yellow!! I read the personality quiz from Sheela’s link and it predicted your traits if yellow was your favorite color (here’s one of the links: http://psychologia.co/personality-color-yellow/)…I’m not sure I agree, but it’s fun to read!!

  • Lovely outfits ladies. I love stripes when I can wear them.

  • Striped tops are the best! I have about 10! You look lovely with the yellow skirt. It really is a super cheerful color! You all have put together gorgeous outfits once again. I love the subtlety of Nancy’s outfit with the pale pinks. And Charlotte totally nailed color blocking with black and white and blue. Gorgeous! I hope you will join me again this Friday for my new link up!
    Shelbee

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Shelbee—it sounds like stripes are quite addicting!! Better than drugs, I guess!!
Of course, we’ll be joining you on Friday!!

  • Welcome to the stripe club, Jodie! Be warned though, once you start with the stripes you won’t be able to stop! I’m envious that you can wear yellows. I’m rather like Debbie, as yellow and I have to be careful. To lemon-y and I look ill but soft pastel yellow I can just about get away with.
And I love the pink, grey and stripes of Nancy’s outfit and the lace jacket of your Mum’s.

And thank you so much for the kind words on my blog. I really do appreciate it at this difficult time for me and my family.

      thanks for checking in!
ps…is there a number that constitutes when I’ve fallen down the stripe rabbit hole? ha ha!

  • Debbie Stinedurf

I do love the yellow with the black and white, although yellow and I are not friends. Look at you, you striped shirt newbie with your three striped shirts…I definitely have a few more than three…lol! My favorite color is purple. I’m not sure why, it’s just always been. Oddly enough, I don’t own a lot of purple clothing…

I love Black and White Jodie it can be dressed up (recently I wore a B&W dress to a wedding) or can look smart casual. I’m loving the addition of colour by all of you beautiful ladies as well. Sue from Sizzling Towards Sixty.

    • Jodie Filogomo

You’re so right Sue!! The black & white combo has certainly been made into a classic in our society!!

  • Black & white looks good with so many colors! I really like it with blue (and pink will always be a favorite of mine!), but your outfit is my favorite! Yellow, black & white just looks absolutely fabulous together!

Thanks Andrea!! I really think the yellow skirt has been a great buy—it seems to add life to many outfits (although it wrinkles somewhat easily)!!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Girl—you crack me up—where do you come up with these hashtags? I’m totally using that one!!
And I might need that intervention soon—I just bought an off the shoulder top in…..(well it’s really called maize—but I realize it’s a variation of yellow)!
      XOXO

  • Amy D. Christensen

You gals look lovely. Jodie, you should be asking, “Stripes! Where have you been all my life?” That top is sexy on you. Love the pop of yellow! Nancy does look fabulous in pink. And Mom looks absolutely perfect! I love all these outfits. I love that you are doing more photo’s with your outfits. You all look so pretty and the backgrounds are perfect. Great post! – Amy

    • Jodie Filogomo

This made me laugh Amy!! Thanks for such nice compliments!!
This post was definitely easier for me to style—since I love color!!

  • Black and white is the perfect base for any color…well done everyone 🙂

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Tara!! It does seem that most people love this combo—of course, I saw a couple B & W things in your Deals under $30 post just this weekend!!

  • PetiteOver40

I agree with donnaduck about black and white together being a neutral. It does seem to go well with so many things — and your and Nancy’s outfits are proof! Sheela showcased that idea as well with a boulder print. It really works!

That yellow skirt with your striped top is so sunny and happy! I can see why you’d choose yellow as a favorite color. It very much suits you! And pink suits Nancy! It really does complement her skin tone and brings out her eyes. Blue may very well be my top favorite color as well as your mom’s, Sheela’s, and Eve’s. They all wear it well! Like you, though, there are times when I have a different favorite color other than blue, but I always seem to come back to it.

Here’s hoping this week will be my week back at it! Keep your fingers and toes crossed!

    Hugs,
    Sherry

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Hugs to you too!!
I do think our environment and events can color our color judgement—and just like our personalities evolve (to a degree), our favorites can too!!
With all of the craziness in your life right now, I would totally think you’d like blue for the calmingness of it!!
Thanks for taking the time to leave your thoughts Sherry!!!

  • donnaduck

That pop of yellow is perfect for black and white! I love the cobalt blue with black and white too. I never thought of pink to add though. You could probably consider black and white together to be “one” neutral and add anything you want to contrast and it would look great! Thanks for the suggestions, Jodi!!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I think you’re right !! I can’t imagine any color with black & white that wouldn’t look good—it just depends on the vibe and feeling you want to get across!
Thanks so much for weighing in on the subject!!

  • RedTagChicLA

You ladies are so adorbs! Your yellow with B&W is totally chic!

Come see how I welcomed Summer in a boho-inspired look this week at the blog – Happy Monday!!

Thanks Rebecca—adorbs is the funnest word—love it!

  • Bright yellow or electric blue paired with black and white is such a bold statement. I love it!

Blue is also my favourite colour : )

    Your Mom’s bracelet is gorgeous.

    bisous
    Suzanne

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Suzanne!!
It’s not that I don’t like blue—but probably as a kid, I felt like it was “mom’s color”—so I used to like green. I still really like green, but I feel like lately I have more yellow in my closet!!

  • Is Eve Sheela´s daughter? Wow, what a team! I like your blog more and more. It´s really lovely to see the different styles and very nice to read. I am not into neutrals myself, only when I am very sunkissed! I love that yellow skirt! Have a happy Monday!
    http://www.nancysfashionstyle.com

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Yes…Eve is Sheela’s daughter—so really this was a mother/daughter showcase!!
I like neutrals but I have a hard time not throwing in a color with them. That’s why this particular post was easier for me than the first one!
Thanks so much for reading Nancy!
