Bomber Jacket 1 (Appointment Wear)

Bomber Jackets for Women ages 50, 60 & 70

Bomber Jacket for the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s: Appointment Wear

Quote of the day: “The worst bullies you will ever encounter in your life are your own thoughts.” Bryant H. McGill

Since the weather is getting cooler (at least here in Denver), I thought I’d touch on a jacket that many of you have in your closets. The bomber jacket is defined as a short jacket with elastic at the waist and cuffs, usually with a zipper. Since they were originally created for pilots (read men), there is not much shaping to these garments. This could be a good or bad thing depending on your shape and preference. Wearing them to an appointment works well since many offices run on the cooler side.

50’s Bomber Jacket: I’ve never been a cheerleader for the bomber jackets, so this is a newer purchase. The color was what decided it for me.

60’s Bomber Jacket: Nancy fell in love with this jacket about 20 years ago. The colors and metallicness of it make it so interesting.

70’s Bomber Jacket: I like the yellow under this jacket to add some color to the mix (obviously because I used the same color under it for the next post…ha ha…at least I’m consistent).

Here’s some bomber jackets to check out under $40:

  • Kathleen McDermott

I particularly like your shoes with your jacket and Charlotte’s shoes and scarf with her jacket. Nancy looks cute as a button, as always.

    • Jodie Filogomo

It is amazing how the shoes can make such a difference, don’t you think?
Back when these were taken, Nancy wasn’t as much of a shoe lover, that she is now!! (I’ve been a great/terrible influence on her depending on your perspective–ha ha)

  • I really like that last outfit with what I think is a python pattern and the yellow.

I want to love a bomber jacket on myself but they look horrible. I have one bronze satin one that I bought thrifting that I can’t seem to give up. I think they look better on people that are tall and thin or women that have no boobs. They are truly made for a masculine shape as you’ve mentioned here.

    • I wholeheartedly agree with your diagnosis…and, funny I don’t fall into any of those categories! C’est la vie!!

  • stylecrone

Love your blog Jodie. You have styled each bomber jacket to perfection. Your colorful shoes are a personal favorite!

  • Lorena

I own one bomber jacket – I have no idea how to wear !
I have only worn it about 4 times.

    • Well, at least you’ve worn it some?…But maybe think about it like a blazer. And if yours is like the norm (which means kinda baggy), try pairing it with more form fitting pants/skirt. I’d love to see what you come up with!!

  • I can see why you went for the colour, Jodie, gorgeous. And I really like the other two especially the metallic one. I tried a bomber earlier this Autumn. Tall Brown Fox took one look at it and said ‘are you trying to look like a bouncer at a nightclub?’
Back in it went to the shop! Admittedly, it was a dark colour, but I think the shape of a bomber is tricky to pull off, isn’t it.

    • It definitely is not my favorite shape, but there are days I appreciate a little looseness!!! And good for your Tall Brown Fox for being honest!!!

  • Jean Ann

I love these outfits! I don’t have a lighter weight bomber just a heavy leather one. I like your moms outfit best and Nancy’s is a close second. I think I would pair navy pants with your outfit to make those bright colors really pop. I can’t figure out how to look back at your older posts any tips?

    • Hi girl!! On a desk top computer there is a tab under the title called Past posts. On my mobile I have to drop down the “menu” (also under title)in order to see it! On my phone the menu is above the title!! Let me know if that helps!

  • I love the color of yours and the shine of Nancy’s but I’m a sucker for any kind of animal print so I’m LOVING your mom’s! Can’t wait to see the other two ways you style them!

  • MaryAnne

I love the softness of your looks. I have an older bomber jacket in the closet that is a soft brown suede but just don’t know how to incorporate it into a look. It is definitely for outdoors but on a crisp fall day maybe I can figure something out. As always, thanks for helping us think outside the box.

    • Your jacket sounds wonderful. When I put this series together, I thought of the jacket like a blazer…maybe that would help? You should definitely wear it this season as I’m seeing tons of suede in all the stores!!!

  • samantha4blair

I have been considering a bomber this season, Jodie.
I am not sure about them though. I find them shapeless (as you pointed out). I like seeing them on other people but I worry (with my short hair and lack of curves) if they look too tomboyish?
Perhaps a cropped cut would work on my body?
Anyway, you have given me food for thought….
    Back to your outfits,
You all look so feminine…Nancy’s bomber is my favorite (I can see why she loves it) but your Mum’s overall look is the one that caught my eye…she is a classy lady.
P.s I am coveting your shoes!

    • I totally see your dilemma—I wouldn’t have bought one except for the blog, but I’m really liking it now (maybe it’s more the color, I love). I do think the newer ones tend to be somewhat more fitted and I have seen some with spandex in them (the one that is similar to Nancy’s). It could be an advantage to buying one now? I think cropped might be perfect for you!! Thanks for the love!!

  • I have a black lace bomber jacket and haven’t worn it much. Perhaps the lack of structure is the culprit. Great color in yours and who doesn’t love a floral?

    • I totally agree…the lack of structure is what bugs me. But if it’s in many women’s closet, others must like it?
