Brooches for the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s: On your Top

Brooches for the 50's, 60's, & 70's.

Quote of the day: “Many of our fears are paper-thin, and a single courageous step would carry us clear through them.”  Brendan Francis Behan

I was happy to read that brooches were making a comeback this year. For some reason I seem to have an abundance of these in my repertoire, yet I’ve hardly worn them in ages. For such a small piece of jewelry, they are quite versatile and appropriate for almost any occasion. I decided to see if the three of us could wear ours from head to toe (figuratively, of course). This post is all about wearing them on the top half of your body. I tried to mix it up by having them pinned on different items: a jacket, a cardigan, and a tunic!

Jodie’s (50’s) Outfit: I picked this pin because I thought it added some nice sparkle & color to an otherwise solid jacket.

Nancy’s (60’s) Outfit: Nancy’s cardigan has a good amount of pattern, so we went with a simple pin.

Charlotte’s (70’s) Outfit: Since mom is a fabulous seamstress, it’s no wonder she has a brooch made of buttons! I thought I’d try to add sparkle by incorporating another pin, but we probably didn’t need it!

You may have plenty of brooches in your collection, but if not there are some wonderful ones for very little money—today I’ll show you animal ones: (Most of these are from the OpenSky website—you do have to join their network to purchase from them—it’s just your email & a password) ps…I think the pig one is my favorite!!

I have so many brooches. One of my favorite things to do is to wear them on a wire as a necklace I have a weakness foe elephants…..

    • Jodie Filogomo

You’re the second person who reports doing that!! Such brilliant people out there!!

  • Rasa Virviciute

    So lovely! I love brooches.

Yes…maybe the reason I love your office so much is because it reminds me of my shoes (obviously I love the look)!! Thanks for your continued support Suzanne!!!

  • Oh, I love that brooches are making a serious comeback! I must say that pig brooch is made for me (as I down another meal). 🙂

I love brooches and wear two of my mother’s as Necklaces… I love your green pants and floral pumps.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Ingenious!!! You really do have some great ideas Tracey!!

  • Amy D. Christensen

I remember as a child my mother having some beautiful brooches. Unfortunately over the years they disappeared. It would be wonderful today to have some of those as a keep sake. Great idea Jodie. Looking forward to the next post.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Amy!! It’s probably easy for them to disappear since they are small! You’ll just have to buy your own with her in mind!!

  • I love the idea that your Mum made a brooch from buttons. Brilliant! I love brooches too and wear them lots of different ways – on hats, berets, through the top shirt button so it’s like a teeny tiny tie! Looking forward to seeing the rest of your selection.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Jacqueline!! I don’t actually think mom made this brooch (but I’m sure she could have!!) She has made me a button bouquet that looks like flowers in a vase for my kitchen table!!

  • dan

Very pretty brooches! Your mom had a delightful idea for hers… my favourite is Nancy’s : its simple shape makes it a really versatile accessory!
    p.s.
I like your floral shoes as well …

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Dan!!

  • You can never wear too many brooches at one time!! Just sayin’. I’ve always been a big fan of the brooch. 🙂

    • Jodie Filogomo

      You’re absolutely right—I probably should have done 3 or 4 on mom’s tunic—that would’ve made a statement!!

  • I never accessorize with brooches, but I think I need to go out and buy one. These look so cool pinned onto your sweaters/jackets. Like a fun/unique button

    • Jodie Filogomo

Well…I have to admit I used to think they were a tad old fashioned, but I guess I’ve changed my mind (besides, I am old now, so it’s totally appropriate!!)

  • Lorena Lorena

I love today’s quote and I am too a fan of brooches and pins and own a lot of them, so I was quite happy to see they’re coming back 🙂 I have begun pinning them on my bags.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Hah….you’re a step ahead of me!! You’ll see that on my mom on Saturday’s post!
