Brown for the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s: Paired with Navy

Brown with Navy for the 50's, 60's, & 70's.

Quote of the day: “Education is knowing where to go to find out what you need to know; and its knowing how to use the information you get.” William Feather

Thank you to MaryAnne, a wonderful reader, for the suggestion of creating a brown series and incorporating into it the navy and brown combination!! I’ve always been a lover of the color brown. Especially at work when I was dressing more “seriously”, I tended to lean towards the browns instead of blacks since my coloring is quite pale. Since brown is a neutral–you can trust that all colors will look good with it! For our brown items in this series I tried to be very diverse with the items chosen to try to give you many ideas for your closet. Mom was happy that she was chosen to wear a skirt, Nancy got appointed her puffy vest, and I chose a silk blouse.

50’s Brown (Blouse): I wanted to lighten up the combination by adding the gold turtleneck. I also wore my lace extender which will have it’s own series in a couple weeks!

60’s Brown (Vest): Nancy’s dress is a great “V” patterned stripe–the addition of the turtleneck makes it possible for her to venture outside when the weather is cold!

70’s Brown (Skirt): Mom’s favorite color is blue, thus finding options for this combination was easy peasy! Her navy sweater maybe lighter in color than the usual navy, but close enough, right?

Does your closet lack in brown? Here’s some brown blouses under $50 (with different ones on my Facebook page on Wednesday):

  • Kathleen McDermott

Would not have thought to pair navy with brown, but I love all the looks above.

    • Jodie Filogomo

This was definitely not on my radar either. But that’s why I love it when other people give suggestions—it can be so inspiring!!

  • Yay for a ‘brown’ series and I really like that you’ve chosen navy with it. So stylish and a little unusual. I think brown often gets overlooked as a neutral as black or grey seem to be more popular but I love dark, chocolately brown especially.
Jodie, you’re especially rocking this combo in your jacket and boots!

Navy is a color I wouldn’t have ever put with brown…but I do like the result!!

  • Bernadette Laganella

Thanks for taking the time to share at the Salon.

  • I love the pattern of Nancy’s dress! I really don’t have a lot of brown in my wardrobe…I think that needs to change! Your jacket is so chic 🙂

    • Jodie Filogomo

It’s funny how many people already have a lot of brown or not….but I really don’t think it’s been in the stores as much lately! Thanks for stopping by Tara!!

  • I think most of the brown in my closet is relegated to bags and shoes, though now that you mention it, I think my brown leather jacket would look pretty amazing over a navy dress…

You’re absolutely right—that must mean it’s time to go shopping!!

  • Maria Jørgensen

I really love the brown color too and the combinations you demonstrate here and the lace blouse in the first picture is so beautiful

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Maria for such a nice compliment!

      • Maria Jørgensen

So nice to meet you Jodie. I like fashion too and have my style, but I have only written one post on the subject called something like “How Fasion Recycles”

  • Such an unexpected color combination, but I love it! I wear a lot of brights and prints because I like to make an impact, but this combo sure makes an impact too! I think all three looks really sing, but I especially love yours with the ruffle-hem sweater and pumps. Very chic and perfect to wear just about anywhere!

Thanks Liz…I’m more of a color girl also…so I’d have never picked this combination myself! But it is amazing, how many people like it….who’d have thunk?!!

  • Versatilestylebytracey

I originally tried a vest with my navy leggings and top today for a challenge , but scraped it when i didn’t like the silhouette and no doubt was inspired to go for a navy and brown look instead… Posting it on my blog and linking to this, my inspiration…

    • Jodie Filogomo

How funny & totally sweet! Can’t wait to see the post!!

  • SheelaGoh

I love Nancy’s outfit and I do think it’s a look which holds universal appeal. I can see myself wearing this as well as women across other age groups. So cool 🙂

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Sheela!!

  • These are two colors I don’t pair nearly enough. They look great together

    • Jodie Filogomo

Me either….in fact I probably wouldn’t have done it except for the fact that a reader asked for it!! Thanks for reading!!

  • Bernadette Laganella

NO WONDER YOUR MOM WANTS TO WEAR A SKIRT, SHE HAS GREAT LEGS. BROWN AND BLUE IS A GREAT COMBO. NOT ONE I WOULD HAVE PULLED OUT OF MY CLOSET AT FIRST GLANCE.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Bernadette!! It definitely isn’t my first choice either, but I do like it now!

  • dan

You look great today, Jodie! Brown and blue is a beautiful, classic combination.Lovely necklace too. The lace rim which comes out is pretty!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Dan!! Everyone keeps saying that brown & blue is a classic combo—I’m glad I tried it!!

  • Versatilestylebytracey

As a natural brunette, I adore brown and love it with Navy. Three fabulous examples! Lace extenders are incredible aren’t they?

    • Jodie Filogomo

It is funny, because I wouldn’t normally pair these colors together—I’d think they were too dark! Thanks for reading Tracey!!

  • Girl…look at you rockin’ those skinny jeans! Love it! That lace extender is cool…can’t wait to hear all about it!

    • Jodie Filogomo

These are one of my favorite jeans because they’re coated—thus no kitty fur!! Thanks my friend!

  • Navy and brown…a rich and stylish classic!
Especially with the addition of those clever touches…the lighter shades and the accessories.
Your Mum’s Navy is more of a French Navy (on my Mac anyway) and she looks beautiful as ever! As does the stunning Nancy.
But, Jodie….Your legs have stolen the show for me in those skinnies and pumps.
You are one foxy 50 year old!
