Capes/Ponchos for the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s: The Casual Version

Quote of the day: “Art is unquestionably one of the purest and highest elements in human happiness. It trains the mind through the eye, and the eye through the mind. As the sun colors flowers, so does art color life.” John Lubbock, Sr.

Now here’s an item that can be great for the colder weather months, yet pretty darn versatile. The capes/ponchos can be worn more like a sweater, a wrap or even a jacket depending on what you wear it with and how you wear it. All of our pieces are more like cardigans in these posts; however, there are many that are designed for over your head also.

50’s Capes/Ponchos: I took out the label on my poncho, and now can wear it with either side out….either dark brown or tan.

70’s Capes/Ponchos: Mom’s cape is quite heavy so we’ve styled it as a coat in all the posts. However, we changed out the belt to make it different.

Here’s some over the head ponchos—for under $25, how can you go wrong? (And there will be more on the facebook page)

  • Jodie, I LOVE your poncho with those tartan trews! (trousers in translation!). What a fun, casual outfit! Definitely given me an idea of how to wear my cape so thank you.

I love the pattern of Nancy’s and great idea to add that leopard print belt to your Mum’s.

      Thanks Jacqueline!!

  • I do love a wrap/poncho/cape Jodie!
    Effortless and so very cool.
I have several and love to be draping myself in the swathes of fabric…I always feel so glamorous, even in jeans.
Nancy is stealing the show for me.
That poncho is stunning on her!

That’s exactly how I feel in them….so glamorous for some reason. I was trying to figure out the reason for it? Thanks Samantha!!

My boho loving self adores ponchos, capes and ruanas. They come in so many varieties. As a petite I caution others to watch closely for good proportions and if all else fails wear heels to help. A nice variety of options in your trio of looks.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Yes…I almost think my poncho is too long….but I love the feel of the sweeping material—especially when you throw it over your shoulder!

  • Bernadette Laganella

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING TO THE SENIOR SALON. I REALLY LIKE THE WAY YOUR MOM IS ROCKING HER LOOK.

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Bernadette!!

These look great! I got my first hideous orange poncho from Tijuana when I was 11 yrs old, and yes I wore it proudly in 1971. It took quite a while for them to come back, but I have one traditional brown sweater poncho, two wraps, and I just bought a longer open front poncho with sleeve holes. Perfect with my long tunics. Great post, Jodie!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I bet that orange poncho was super cool Terri!! And they are a great throw on piece right now, huh?

  • Stevie Turner

I have a poncho. I tend to wear it at music festivals!

    • Jodie Filogomo

That’s a perfect place to wear it….why not other places? Now’s the time!!

  • I love the look of ponchos much more than I actually like wearing them.

I like that you switched out that belt to the jazzy leopard.

    bisous

I’ve heard others say that same remark? Some say it’ because they don’t stay it place which is one reason Nancy got the one with sleeves….so it’s more like a cardigan! That’s also why I belted mine! Thanks for checking in Suzanne!!

  • Loving all three looks! I want those leggings of yours…super cute!!! Dressed as you all are…all three of you could easily pass for ten years younger!

My leggings are fur lined (something you probably don’t need in Vegas, eh?) Thanks for such a nice compliment!!

  • Lorena Lorena

Oh its poncho time ! I only wear mine when i travel or to the movies 🙂 which is where the a/c is the coolest!

    • Jodie Filogomo

It’s true….I always take any extra layer to the movies (along with my earplugs because it’s always so loud)—great idea to make that extra layer my poncho (now that i have one)!!
