A Classic vs Modern Style Using your Shoes with a Dress

Quote of the day: “To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong.” Anonymous

What is your style? That’s a question that many articles will refer to, yet sometimes it’s the hardest question to answer! The idea for a post incorporating classic vs modern style came to me when I was looking through the Talbot’s catalog! They had paired the same skirt with 2 different shirts on different pages, and it really got me thinking about how one outfit was very classic while the other outfit seemed more modern.

On top of that I had a reader make a suggestion of how I would change up an outfit that my mom already put together to produce a different look !

Thus the idea for a couple of posts started forming. I thought I’d experiment with taking a dress from a classic look to a more modern look just by changing out the shoes & accessories. I am in no way saying that one style is better than the other! In fact, I think they are all great for different occasions and events. But then again, maybe you lean towards one style over another? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

Jodie’s (50+) Outfit: For my classic vs modern style, I updated the shoes from black & white pumps to my silver sneakers!

Classic vs Modern Dress changed with shoes for Women over 50

Classic Style for Jodie

Since we were going out to dinner to Fleming’s for one of their prime rib specials, I thought the classic look would work perfectly for this occasion!

I will admit that I don’t think of a denim dress as very classic; however, I thought it transformed nicely. We all seem to love our denim jeans, so the thought about a denim dress could be quite versatile. Take this dress for instance! It’s not much different than the one I am wearing, and could easily work in many situations! If you like the idea but lean more towards a cleaner look, then this dress is lovely.

Classic vs Modern dress for a night out

It’s not only the shoes that I updated for the look, but the accessories too! I grabbed my black & white purse, and picked out some gold & silver jewelry!

I realize that we were taught not to mix our metals in an outfit, but if the jewelry is already made that way, then it makes it easier to accept!! Heck, you could even find a necklace like this one that has three different metals in it!!

Women 50+ comparing a classic vs modern dress with shoes

I always think of a pump heel as a classic shoe. And I was vacillating between my black pumps and these! But since it is summer, I opted for the lighter pair! If you like this idea, but need a smaller heel, then I found this pair or this pair!

Modern Style for Jodie

This outfit was worn for a casual day down on Larimer Square in Denver, watching the sidewalk chalk artists create their masterpieces! It was a walking day like the 3 of us had styled outfits for recently on the blog.

I prefer to wear dresses and skirts when it’s hot outside, and the fact that this dress wouldn’t blow up in the wind, was perfect! I think the straighter dresses or even the hi-lo dresses can be better for the windy days!!

Modern vs Classic Dress for daytime

Since we were outside all day, I threw on a hat, and sunglasses!!

The big floppy hats are really such a fun addition to a casual outfit. My friend even commented that she was glad I was wearing it because I was easy to find in the crowds! The nice thing is there are certainly ones that aren’t expensive such as this one and this one!

I wanted to add a youthful vibe to this dress & cardigan, so I layered my necklaces and even included a choker. My mom laughed at this choker because it reminded her of a dog collar!

When the chokers first started coming back last year, many women commented that it wasn’t their favorite! For some reason I like the chokers, and if you do too, then check out the fabulous ones under $10 here, here & here!

Nancy’s (60+) Outfit: The idea behind Nancy’s classic vs modern outfit is the thought of wearing shoes of a different color than the dress.

Classic vs. Modern for Women over 60

Classic Style for Nancy

I thought a black & white dress would be perfect for this experiment. I think the normal response is to wear black shoes with a dress like this! Therefore, I’d consider this outfit a classic look.

I’m sure all of you have black shoes in your closet! But do you have black sandals? I was saying a couple of weeks ago that I hardly wear my black sandals! So, of course, I wanted to search for some that would make me want to wear them. I found this pair and this pair that really caught my fancy! No, I haven’t ordered them yet, but….

We wanted to keep the jewelry subdued to keep with the classic vibe, so we grabbed her silver jewelry!

I’m curious to know, if you tend to pair gold or silver jewelry with your black & white pieces?

I also want to point out that this dress has been altered! When Nancy first bought it, the dress had another ruffle piece at the hem line. It seemed too long and voluminous, so I removed the bottom piece of material.

Women 60+ Make a Dress Different with shoes

She also just wore one bracelet!! You’ll see below how we layered Nancy’s bracelets, but classically, I believe that one is preferred.

Of course if you have a statement bracelet, then you’d probably always just wear it by itself. For example this beauty, or this one would certainly get noticed all by itself!

Modern Style for Nancy

Then we changed out the black sandals for a bright colored sandal. Nancy actually had a couple of options that would have looked great, like orange or yellow. However, we went with her red sandals.

This addition of a totally different color for your shoes may be hard to wrap your head around if you’ve never done it. I know many article say you should match your shoes to the bottom half of your outfit. But, I think, that information is coming from the old rules, and breaking those rules adds in a modern flair!

Classic vs modern way to dress

We carried the red up into Nancy’s necklace, yet kept the earrings and bracelets white and silver.

This outfit really isn’t very different from the post where we wore red sandals to add a pop of color to an outfit 2 years ago!

Women over 60 and Style

It’s not always easy to see the bracelets from far away, but Nancy is wearing 3 different ones! Stacking your bracelets like this is a fun way to add in different colors or make them show up better!

This accessorizing is easy to do with the bracelets you already have in your possession. But if you like it to be even easier then you can buy them already stacked like these and these!

Charlotte’s (70+) Outfit: For my mom’s classic vs modern dress, I thought it’d be interesting for her to wear solid colored shoes and then switch to a pair of print shoes.

Classic vs modern dress style by Changing out the shoes

Classic Style for Charlotte

I think this is the usual way to style a print dress for most of us! The solid colored shoes match the background color to look cohesive.

The dress and shoes may look black, but they are actually navy! I think that navy is going to make a comeback pretty soon. So if you don’t already have some navy shoes, then check out these and these.

Classic vs modern dress for women over 70

I had mom grab a patent leather purse that is older than I am, and some gold jewelry.

Now the purse is black, but you realize that it’s okay to mix navy and black now, right? Besides I always say that if you have a hard time telling the difference between the two shades, then everyone else will too! So don’t worry about a black purse with a navy outfit. Most of us already have some kind of black handbag, so that makes it easier! But if you need a new one, how about a reversible one?

Women over 70 and accessories

You can see how the dress is solid on the back portion.

I think there are some fabulous color block dresses available. This one almost looks like two pieces! Or this kind is my favorite at having that slimming effect! If you like that last one, then here it is in the opposite colorway!

Modern Style for Charlotte

To add in a vibe of modern, I wanted my mom to mix her prints, by wearing print shoes! I had originally requested that she wear her pink, floral pair that she wore recently, but she chose these color blocked heels instead.

I do think print shoes can add so much interest to an outfit, especially if you tend to dress in solid colors. But recently, we showed how they can even work with other prints! Like this pair of shoes would really go with any other colors!!

Classic vs modern dress for 70+ women

Since mom was on a color block kick, she even grabbed her purse that has two different colors on it!

Personally, I didn’t used to care much about my purse and how it looked with my outfit, but I’ve found that it can add a whole different element to the look! Print purses have become my favorite lately. If you are a butterfly lover then you’ll be excited for this one! Of course, if you just like fun stripes then this one is all that!!

70+ women with classic vs modern dress

For my mom’s accessories, we decided to go with some fun colors instead of silver or gold!

Another way to make your accessories modern is to incorporate the trends! For now, that would mean fringe! You can find this detail on everything from necklaces to earrings to bracelets along with purses, and hats!

This exercise of styling classic vs modern looks with a dress by changing up the shoes, would be perfect for traveling! Then you basically have a couple of different outfits taking up very little space! I’d love to know your first instinct when you pick out the shoes and accessories to wear with a dress. Are you more of the classic or modern style?

Thanks to one and all of you for your support. It means more than you know!

  • Rebecca Saffer

Sorry for the late response but I was on vacation for a bit! I loved this post and the tweaks that you made to each outfit to make it a more updated and less classic look. This is the style I aim for which I describe as “edgy elegant” or modernizing a classic look. I have to say that my favorite look is Charlotte’s modern update to her color blocked dress. Perfection!!

    • Ohhhh….I love that term “edgy elegant”, Rebecca!!! It’s very yin/yang ish!!!
I’m thinking you’re crushing on my mom lately—-I’ll have to up the ante for Nancy & I to see if we can get you over in our camp—ha ha!!!
      XOXO

  • Eileen Flanigan Sinda

Jodie, I loved your classic style, although I can’t wear high heels. I liked the modern style jewelry, but wouldn’t want to wear the sneakers or the hat. Loved Nancy’s classic and modern styles, but again, I would have to have a flatter shoe. Charlotte’s outfit is wonderful both ways, but I like the modern style more. She looks too old, like the Queen in the classic. But that’ll of these are IMHO.

    • Eileen Flanigan Sinda

Ps: this was such a fun post.

    • I’m so glad you liked this post, Eileen!! That’s so funny you said that about the queen, because that was my thought too!!!! Not that it’s totally bad, I’m always just trying to get her to embrace newer, funner looks!!
Hopefully you’ll like next weeks posts then too?? It’s a comparison also, but with accessories!!!
      XOXO

      • Eileen Flanigan Sinda

Hi Jodie, there is nothing wrong with being very classic and traditional like the Queen, but she is 90 and you mom is a beautiful, vibrant woman 20 years younger. And she can wear the updated look very well.

        • Great point Eileen (although my mom turns 80 next year—she doesn’t look like it though, right?)….I’m totally going to forward this comment to her, so she can appreciate your wonderful words!! XOXO

I absolutely love your modern outfit. Give me silver, casual footwear and that hat! The jewellery jut looks so right with it too. thanks again for sharing your styles with #HighlightsofHappy Jodie.

    • Thanks Carol!! It really worked well for our outing that day—in fact, I’ve been wearing hats more than ever lately!!

  • Oh Jodie, this was such a fun post! I love changing out my chose to change the look off outfits. You ladies did great with your classic/moderns looks.

I love your denim dress like something fierce. That zipper detail! OMGosh! Have me some ideas for trim in a future sit garment. I’m also loving that gay. Big hats are my thing.

    You ladies look AMAZING!❤

    • Thanks so much Anita!!
I really lucked out on this dress since I ordered it online!! But it not only fits so well, but the zipper is fun!! Of course you have some fabulous ideas for a future garment—your brain is incredible that way!!

Love these changes, Jodie. You did a great job going from classic to modern, and I love that you did “modern” rather than casual. I’m always doing dressy vs. casual, so this was a different way to show a change. I love your dress. You did an amazing job making the transition…and I love your big hat. You look so pretty in both outfits. I think for Nancy and your Mom the color changes were a great way to make it a more modern look. Well done! – Amy

  • Kirsten Wick

It’s always so surprising how shoes and all other accessories can make such a drastic change to an outfit, isn’t it? I do love flats and all sorts of sneakers combined with skirts and dresses when we’re out and about and love to dress them up by adding pumps. Love all your styles. Kirsten x

    http://www.thelifbissue.com

    • It really does make such a difference, I think, Kirsten!! And as much as I like a classic look, I really think it’s more fun to change them up—especially with sneakers!!
      Thanks!!
      XOXO

  • They’re all great, but I just love the modern styles! I love you all in dresses. = )

    • That’s my preference too, Laura!! It just seems more fun and lively!!

I am pretty classic, so those are the looks I like though the modern are pretty cute. Love those black and white shoes. Back in the day we called them spectators, maybe they still do. lol

    • And classic is always good, I think Victoria!!
My mom still has some spectator pumps—the older version!! I always called these my Tuxedo pumps because they reminded me of a tuxedo for some reason!!

  • Judy Gramith

You three look spectacular in both versions!!
Jodie, your dress is SO fun!! The zipper embellishment is just so cool. When the weather cools off I’d love to see you try a bandana , rolled and tied like a choker and a biker, bomber or classic denim jacket with short booties. That dress has “funk” potential!! 🙂
Nancy’s ruffled flounce is darling on her and I can tell that she loves it too. Would a red denim jacket be fun for cool days?
Charlotte’s shoes in the modern version are perfect!! You don’t get this mind of match very often. Does Charlotte have a new hairstyle similar to yours? She is looking SO extra cute!

    • Thanks Jude!! I know many of us lean towards a certain “style”, but I think there are times that both ways can work well!!
I’ll have you know that I wore this exact dress when Rob & I went out to visit Sherry in Seattle in February!! And I wore it with a neck scarf and ankle boots!!! See…we are very much alike!! 😉
I keep asking mom to push the hair above her ears back when we take photos—doesn’t it look nice that way?? Keep telling her that, because she doesn’t always believe me…ha ha!!
      XOXO

    • Charlotte Miller

Thanks Judy for the lovely comments. Hair still the same just tucked behine my ears.

  • Really well done! An excellent example of how simple, and often inexpensive, changes, can really make a big impact on a look! This is why its so important that we stock our accessories… They can transform the most basic outfit from something classic to something chic and modern to something hip and trendy. Great idea for a post!

    • Thanks so much Ronnie!! I’m glad I now have a great rationalization to increase my accessory stash..ha ha!!

Great diversity with the outfits and how the shoes change the look. The denim dress you wear is really versatile (like jeans!) and dressing up or down seems easy!

    • Thanks Terri!! I would have never thought to wear this dress for dinner out, except I need blog photos—ha ha!! There’s one way to get you out of a rut, huh??
      XOXO

  • Laura

You’ve really demonstrated how much difference shoes can make with an outfit! I love how your dress is not only classic and modern, but dressy and casual!

    • Thanks Laura!! And really I wouldn’t think of a denim dress for a dressy occasion—but really you can hardly tell it’s denim. Especially inside the restaurant where it was dimly lit!!
      XOXO

  • Great post, Jodie! I enjoyed seeing everyone’s looks styled in both ways. Nancy’ modern look is one after my own heart with her red shoes and necklace. Charlotte made a great choice with carrying out the color block theme. While I do think the floral shoes you had in mind would have looked nice, this makes more of a statement in my opinion. I really like your cute denim dress and it looks great styled both ways. You look so cute in your floppy hat!

    • I think you’re exactly right Jennie, that mom’s pick of modern shoes really worked nicely!! She really does have a great eye for style—I’m just trying to push her to be more modern at times!! XOXO

    • I totally agree Gail! Not that I don’t like the classic versions, but they’ve been done before!!

  • Wow! What a great experiment. It really seems to be the pop of bold color that takes it from classic to modern. I have to say I liked all the modern ensembles. The classic we’ve all seen for decades (hence it’s a classic!) but they seem very unexciting and put all of you ladies in the background. The pop of color seems like you’re all saying “I’m here and I’m not going anywhere!”. I’m going to be looking for more colorful accessories and shoes now on. Thanks Ladies!

    • I love how you describe the classic, Julia!! We have seen it for decades, and I’m all for changing it up!!

All the outfits are cute, whether classic or modern styling. Don’t have a favorite today. Jodie, I love your denim dress with the zipper trim. Nancy’s dress is just fun…she looks like she enjoys wearing it . Nice smile… Your mom pulled out some great accessories for her color block dress. My daughter is coming from Texas for my seventieth birthday and I think she has a photo shoot planned. I mentioned a long time ago that it would be nice to have a picture with her and Zoe. Any suggestions? She said “dress up”. xoxo

    • Happiest of birthdays Donna!!! And what a perfect time to have a photo shoot!!
Since you asked my opinion—I think you ought to coordinate with your daughter (and anyone else in the photo). I always love it when people wear the same colors in photos!! While I know myself well enough to know I’m a “classic” dresser, I do tend to mix things up more on weekends and evenings when I’m after a more casual/modern look. To feel most confident and most comfortable, I always lean toward the classics. I like every one of the outfits shown here, both as classics, and then with the modern twist. Your classic look nailed it for an evening out at a nice restaurant. And then to change it up with the silver sneakers for a day of walking, both looks are winners. I do like the way the sneakers play off the more dressy pieces. Like wearing diamonds with blue jeans, to me it just works! Nancy’s looks are also winners! I think her dress itself lends a more modern vibe with the ruffles, but adding the black sandals makes it definitely a classic look. I love mixing red and black, that’s a particular favorite of mine, so I really like that look also. Her necklace pulls it all together. And I LOVE your mom’s dress!! She looks really wonderful in that, with BOTH pairs of shoes. I think this shows just how this classic vs. modern idea works. The dark shoes are expected for a dressy, classic look, and then to change them up to the color block shoes just adds a fun twist and shoes personality. This is a fun post. Since I wear mostly classic pieces to work, I’ve been inspired by your blog to add some twists and fun to outfits to keep them from leaning toward boring. It’s so cool how you just get an idea and run with it. Very inspirational!

    • Maybe this is why I get so obsessed with shoes, Karen?? I feel like they add so much to an outfit. I mean, I realize the accessories help too, but for some reason I tend to look at the shoes and go from there!!
I know I was definitely more classic when I was working too–although there were times I’d wear some funner shoes—and patients really liked them.

  • Jodie, great topic and point for discussion. I guess I’m more of a modern gal because I like the ‘modern’ versions of all three looks. Classic has its place but I prefer the “unexpected” touches you added for the modern styles.

    • I totally agree Rena—not that classic is bad, but I like to be a little (little?? ha ha) different nowadays!!

    Jodie,,
Amazing how just changing up the shoes can take a classic dress from formal to casual. You are also encouraging me to throw out some of the old standby rules like don’t mix metals. Thanks for the nudge to have more fun with my pairings!
    Blessings,
    Bev xx

    • It’s hard to change our thinking about certain rules, don’t you think, Bev?? But after you see it done differently, I think we start to realize that these “rules” don’t always make sense!! It’s way more fun to mix things up and consider getting dressed fun instead of a chore!
