A Day of Walking and Summer Event Style
Quote of the day: “With confidence, you have won even before you have started.” Marcus Garvey
With the warm weather and longer days, it’s time to consider your summer event style. There will be many occasions when the day that is planned will be fun yet include much walking!
I wanted to thank Jill for her suggestion for this post. Jill originally asked for ideas on what to wear to an amusement park. So I broadened the scope of the question by trying to make it relevant to any outdoor activity that would include a full day of walking and standing!! So join the 3 of us as we take you along on our trip to the Denver Botanic Gardens on Mother’s Day!
I think for any woman getting ready for this type of activity, the shoes are going to play a huge factor! That and wearing sunscreen or hats!! I know when I used to go to Disney World with my babysitting family, we’d also all try to wear the same outfits, so we could pick each other out in a crowd easily! How about you? What are your tricks for your summer event style?
Jodie’s (50+) Outfit: I don’t always worry so much about which shoes I’ll wear for a day of walking because I have orthotics that I can insert in many of my shoes!
My orthotics were made over 20 years ago and are a plastic material. I have to admit that I usually slide them in my tennies, but they also worked in these sandals that I am wearing. I know otherwise some flat sandals are just as tough to walk in as heels!!
There’s always the case for Birkenstock’s too, but I just have a hard time thinking of them as a stylish shoe! Although, one thing I’ve learned is to never say never! Of course, there are other stylish, comfortable sandals too!
My first consideration for this summer event style was actually my pants! I might have worn a skirt, but there was a chance of it being a windy day. I felt like wearing capris were a better choice!
These pants were the ones I received from our #LoveChicos Girlfriend Event! If you look back at the original post, you can see that they certainly shrunk. Now this was fine for me, but my friend did not appreciate that fact. I do think the slimming pants fit wonderfully, but if you buy them at the length you want them, then you might want to be careful about shrinkage. They don’t have this print anymore, but they do have a floral print in blue!
My other big considerations for this outfit is how to keep from getting burned!
Of course, I apply sunscreen, but I also made sure to grab my straw hat! This one is easily fold-able because it was purchased for traveling on our Mediterranean cruise from many years ago. If that aspect of your head wear is important, then I found another inexpensive version!
I also added my prescription sunglasses from many moons ago. I just recently bought a new pair too, but I liked the color of these better with the outfit! Maybe next time I’ll be smarter and order my prescription pair in black so they go with everything?
After these choices, I then made sure to pick a short sleeve shirt instead of a sleeveless top.
Even though it was warm out, I didn’t want to have to worry about a sunburn on my shoulders. And I know from experience that my sunscreen rubs off from moving my purse around and just sweating too! The crisscross design is a fun detail that is very popular right now! In fact, you can find them in many colors and prints if you like this design!
I also chose this purse because I could wear it as a cross body purse! Of course it didn’t hurt that the colors went well with the outfit, LOL! These are totally the kind of purses you need for this event, so your hands can be free for other things!!
Nancy’s (60+) Outfit: Nancy started her summer event style outfit differently than I did!
She wanted to wear this shirt for our outing, so that was her first pick! This type of top, I’d describe as a kimono top! It’s nice because it’s light and airy, yet still covers her and is modest. If you wanted one like this, I’d recommend either this one or this one!
It’s such the focal point of the outfit, that I wanted to showcase and talk about it more!
Below is a photo showing off the back portion of Nancy’s shirt.
You can see how it’s almost like a tank top with a sheer scarf attached over top! The 3 of us showed some examples of sheer tops last year because I think many older women like the idea of being covered, yet not being too warm!
Having a lightweight blouse for any summer event would be exactly what you need for the times you’re hanging outside at either an amusement park or any outdoor activity. I found a couple more blouses that might tickle your fancy including this one or this one!
The next step for Nancy’s summer event style was her black capris since the shirt was so colorful!
She vacillated on which pair of shoes to wear for our adventure. This red pair is one of my favorites, but the incline ended up being annoying by the end of the day! It turned out fine though, because when we got tired, we just sat down and had a snack!! I do think this pair of red sandals could be super stylish, yet better for a day of walking!!
And Nancy added in her straw hat, accessories and then carried a smaller purse to complete her outfit for the outing!! I’m not sure if I’m just noticing straw hats more lately, or if they are just in abundance at the stores! I think my favorite detail lately, is the fact that some have writing on them! Or even the hats with pom poms on them are so interesting!!

Charlotte’s (70+) Outfit: And wouldn’t you know it, but my mom showed up in her capri pants also for our day!
I’m hoping that this shows the fact, that you can be stylish & comfortable in capri length pants, no matter what your age! In fact, I just submitted an article to Sixty + Me recently about this clothing item. Keep your eyes peeled for it, because I’d love it if you read and share it when it comes out!!
I just think for most of us older women, our summer event style would include capri pants for comfort and looking good!
I really like how my mom did the half tuck with her t-shirt in for this outfit!
One of the guidelines to help make your outfit look better is to try to use the rule of thirds for the proportion with your clothing. Mom shows this nicely with the half tuck, and then you really focus on how pretty the floral capris are!
Instead of wearing a necklace for this hot day, my mom chose a t-shirt with embellishment on it’s trim! I always think this is the best idea for women who don’t love wearing accessories!! It takes a plain t-shirt and adds some fun to it easily! For example this shirt on the sides or this one around the neckline!
Mom brought along her cross body bag also in a fabulous red to match her pants!
These purses may not be the ones you’re able to fit all of your “stuff” in for everyday, but they are perfect for these events! If you happen to need one, then a white bag would match with everything, or you could indulge in a little tassel trend!
Mom still has a couple pair of Keds in her closet from ages ago!
Talk about a style that has made it through the years! It seems like they do a great job updating their shoes to keep them fresh! For instance, if you’re a Minnie lover than there’s a pair for you! Or if you like perforations for some ventilation, then this pair is fun! But not only those, there are colors and metallics to keep you looking stylish!!
I had to photobomb my mom—it was such a fun day, and we all played well together!! XOXO

I hope you had fun paling around with us on our trip to the Botanic gardens!! Our summer event style was similar in nature to each other, but maybe that’s because we have so much experience about these excursions?
We were certainly tired at the end of the day, but it was a perfect family activity! You may recognize these outfits from the photo I posted in my month of May post from this trip!
Of course, if you know my husband at all, you’ll realize we finished the day off at a restaurant. Life is all about the food to him! 🙂
Thanks to one and all of you for your support. It means more than you know!
