Denim Vest for the 50, 60 & 70 year old woman

Denim Vest for the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s: Under a Jacket

Quote of the day: “You are enough. You are so enough. It’s unbelievable how enough you are.” Unknown

If you’re anything like me, you always think of a jacket as something to wear “over” other pieces. Well how about wearing it “under” a vest? I saw this idea being done in these last winter months with a fur vest, so I decided to use this same concept with a denim vest. I’d have to consider a denim vest as somewhat a classic and versatile piece of clothing. It’s a great topper over just about anything, and since it’s denim, it goes with everything! Of course, there are many different varieties available if you don’t already have one in your closet—you can get them in different colors, prints, washes or lengths! The three of us are perfect examples that denim vests are not all created the same. Mine is a dark wash that’s mid length, Nancy’s is a medium wash in a longer silhouette, and mom’s is a short version that has a distressed look! Preparing for this post gave me a thought—since most denim vests have the vertical seams down the front which tends to elongate the vest and give it shape, the vest might be great to wear over those bomber jackets which tend to be shapeless?

60’s Outfit: Nancy’s sandals are the epitome of summer in my mind. They are colorful with an interesting stone on the front—they have a pattern on the cork wedge portion and from the top view the design even looks like a butterfly !

70’s Outfit:  Since mom’s vest is shorter, I wanted to show it with longer length garments beneath it, but somehow it looks wonky to me? I picked out this vest for mom when we were thrifting—I think it was a kid’s or juniors because the size was larger than her normal size, yet fit her great!! Of course I had to mix in some brooches around the vest pocket button area for her required bling!

Jeans: Dana Buchman (similar here)~~Jacket: Royal Robbins (similar here-with short sleeves)~~Vest: Dear John (similar here)~~Shirt: City Girl (similar here)~~Shoes: Michael Finelli (similar here)~~Owl Brooch: (similar here)~~Earrings: (similar here)

It warms my heart to know others are reading this!

All denim vests are not created equal—there are different styles, different colors & different embellishments—what do you like? (The Macy’s one is not sold out—at least not when I click on the link!!)

  • Kathleen McDermott

I love each of these denim vests. They look tres chic over the lightweight jackets you paired with them. Really a cool look. Love your bracelet, Nancy’s sandals and Charlotte’s grouping of pins.

    • Jodie Filogomo

I’ve been wearing more vests over jackets lately, Kathleen. In fact, if you were here with me right now, you’d see that I have a long, sweater vest over a faux leather jacket!! I think because of learning this, I wear my vests more now! I have a feeling I didn’t wear them as much before because I was always too cold!! Getting older means learning new things, I guess….

      • Kathleen McDermott

I do not have a denim vest! I never see denim vests on the clearance racks, but there are always denim jackets and I have a few of those (plus colored ones). Didn’t occur to me till now, but I’ll pick of one or two jackets and remove the sleeves!

        • Jodie Filogomo

          Perfect idea!!
I have seen some denim vests at the thrift store—that’s where we got my mom’s!!

  • Versatilestylebytracey

I would not have thought of doing this, might have to give that a try after I lose some weight and perhaps have room to do it, lol.

    • Jodie Filogomo

I loved this look with the leather jackets & fur vests….so I thought I might as well try it with my denim vest!
I’m not sure it’s super practical, but it’s fun!!

  • ADA

Oh Jodie, what a clever idea. I have worn a denim vest over a cardigan before but not over a blazer. It looks polished and sharp. I need to try it. Great looks all three of you. =)

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Ada!!
I love the idea of layering, although I didn’t like how mom’s outfit turned out!!
But I’ll keep experimenting—it is fun!

  • First time I’ve stopped by your blog. I love your idea and your ladies! How fun to come up with the outfits together! Everyone looks fabulous and I love the sweater you knitted in a previous post!

How wonderful Julia!! Thanks so much for stopping by! And boy do I love the title of your blog! Gonna go check it out!!

  • Such genius to style the different age groups with the same look.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Carrie! Goes to show that style is ageless (at least in my mind!!)

  • Super cute styling idea! And I love brooches on denim jackets or vests. I always like the look of a denim vest over a hoodie sweatshirt circa 1980’s (I think of Scott Baio), but I still love the look!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Ha…maybe that was in the back of my mind since I had such a crush on Scott Baio!!

      • Who didn’t, Jodie, who didn’t?!!!!

        • Jodie Filogomo

I mean, even now—he’s quite the hottie (shhhh…don’t tell my husband!)

  • Bernadette Laganella

Another great one. The vests look super that way.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Bernadette!! I do love vests as a finishing piece (besides they cover the lumps & bumps!!)

  • Cute! I like the cluster of pins on the vest. 🙂

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Juli!!
I just saw an ad in a fashion magazine where they had them on both sides and many more of them—–I might have to try that soon, especially since mom has a ton!!

  • This is quite clever! I had to reread the first few sentences a couple of times to process that you’re wearing jackets and blazers under a vest and not just button-up shirts. I love playing with surprising juxtapositions and styling a garment with one theme with completely contrasting accessories. The idea of taking an overpiece and layering it under something follows the same thinking. I think a green army jacket would be a great piece to layer under a denim vest!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Liz!!
You’re so right —I think I’ll have to try that —I had an olive green blazerish jacket that would probably work under my vest!

  • Such pretty ladies! You guys prove that fashion has no age! Lovely!

Thanks so much Tamara—that is so nice to hear from the younger generation!!!

  • You all look great! Proof of how versatile a denim vest really is.

  • Stevie Turner

We call them waistcoats over here in the UK. I love them!

    • Jodie Filogomo

It is funny how the same things have different names even though we speak the same language (sort of–ha ha)!!

      • Stevie Turner

Yes, a vest in the UK is an undergarment worn under a blouse or shirt when it’s cold. Never mind, I still love them and have many vests/waistcoats…

        • Jodie Filogomo

Interesting!! So it’s basically like lingerie? Or a camisole?

          • Stevie Turner

Yes, although there’s also a thermal version which is great in the winter under a jumper.

  • thefashionfolks

So chic with a denim vest! Xx

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks!! Denim is the best, isn’t it?

  • Debbie Stinedurf

I love layering outerwear…it adds a whole new element to the outfit. I do agree with you about your mom’s jacket. I think if it was shorter or even longer (like duster length) it would work. I do totally love the pins though…nothing dresses up a denim jacket or vest better! You’re all gorgeous as always!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I just saw an add for a designer (of course, I can’t remember which one) where there were tons of pins on a denim jacket–both sides —all over!
Mom has enough I could probably do that–then maybe you wouldn’t notice how short the vest is—ha ha!!
oh, and thanks for vocalizing what this is—layering outerwear (words escape me many a day!!)

  • Would you believe I don’t have a denim vest? I think I need to get on that asap! Everyone looks fabulous!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Actually…that is a little hard to believe!! Especially how I style it for the next two posts!!
      Thanks for confessing, Tara!!

  • Judy Gramith

    A pretty adventurous experiment. Cute!
I think your mom’s vest is just a bit too short for that particular jacket. I’m guessing she likes her jackets a bit longer. Maybe the contrast in lengths (jacket/vest) just don’t suit her as well ?The lapel pins are darling, especially the owl!

    • Jodie Filogomo

That’s a great way to describe this Judy—an adventurous experiment! I really loved the ones I saw this winter with the fur vest over a leather jacket (and I even wore my fur vest this way a couple times).
I think mom’s denim vest looks better in the next two series—you’ll have to let me know what you think??
But it could work with the right vest & jacket….maybe….I’m always open to try new things (at least lately!!)

  • Aditi Oberoi Malhotra

    Love these vests! Very cute!!

  • I love the various colours and prints in Charlotte’s outfit. I must ask, what’s the lipstick she’s using? 🙂 xoxo

    • Jodie Filogomo

Maybe mom will answer you on this Sheela—I’ll tell her to check the comments! She doesn’t have quite as many as you, but almost!!!
      Thanks!!

    • Charlotte Miller

Thanks for the question. It’s probably a combination of at least two different brands. I don’t particularly favor one brand–I just combine to get the shade I need.

  • What wonderful layered looks! I love the longer trench style vests

    michellespaige.com

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Michelle!! I do love layering, but I’m not sure this is my favorite ever!!

  • Mother Daughter

This is a look I can’t get into, sorry. lol I am not a vest person though. I don’t understand the new look of wearing a sleeveless vest over a sleeveless top. I do like your bracelet and Nancy’s shoes.

    • Jodie Filogomo

I’m so glad you commented even though it’s not for you!! Truly it’s a good thing that we don’t all agree because life would be quite boring otherwise!!
For some reason, I love layering—it feels more put together, but I realize it’s not everyone’s preference!! Especially once the hot weather rolls around, right?
Happy Tuesday and thanks again for your words!!

  • Love the brooches on your Mom’s.

    bisous
    Suzanne

    • Jodie Filogomo

She certainly has a ton of them!! I saw some cute ones at Banana Republic this weekend…so they’ll probably start being more mainstream soon—darn, and I thought we were being so adventuresome!!

  • Love the wash and style of your vest and Nancy’s. Love your bracelet too! I’m not feeling your mom’s vest, although I think it would work on you. I love the cluster of pins on it!
    http://whosaprettygirl.com

    • Jodie Filogomo

I think mom’s vest looks better in the next two posts—you’ll have to let me know if you agree or not (if not, I can always steal it from her–ha ha).
But I didn’t love this outfit on her once we took the pictures—I probably should have just restyled it (call me lazy!!)
Thanks for being honest—it really helps!!

  • Laura

I hadn’t thought to wear a vest over a jacket, but I think I need to try it! I am a fan of layering and finding different ways to layer is always a plus in my book!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Maybe I was drawn to this because I love the whole idea of layering also!
      I’m not 100% sure it’s practical—but it’s a thought!!
      Thanks for reading Laura!!

  • Amy D. Christensen

Great idea Jodie. I would have never thought of putting the vest over my jacket! That’s why I love your blog. You are always coming up with things I would have never thought of. All your outfits look very cute! – Amy

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Amy—I saw this with the fur vests over a leather jacket this winter—and I thought it was brilliant! Now I’m not sure why I’d do this with a denim vest in all practicality (ha ha), but I love having options!!!

  • RedTagChicLA

Can’t go wrong with a cute denim vest like this!
