Summer Sundress: Then & Now

It’s time for another Fab Collab! Sherry from Petite Over 40 is back and this time we’re featuring that favorite summer staple, the sundress. If you joined our first Fab Collab where we shared styles and stories behind our pearls, you know that each of us represent a different decade in life. Sherry is in her 40s, I’m in my 50s, Nancy is in her 60s, and Mom is in her 70s.

All this week you’ll see how we’re styling sundresses these days and read our own personal connections to a particular dress from our past. Sherry got the week started styling a Lilly Pulitzer sundress and sharing a story about dress that made her feel as elegant as Meryl Streep in the movie Out of Africa. Read her story here.
I styled my modern day sundress with a neck scarf & accessories–yellow, of course!! You can read about my handmade floral sundress that reminds me of dental school here.
We hope you’ll join us all week for the Fab Collab Fun!
Summer Sundress for 4 generations.
Here’s Nancy’s story about her sundress and her memories about it…

Sundress Then:

Having grown up in Northern Indiana, on the shores of Lake Michigan, I was a sunshine, beach girl. It was certainly the time of the beach movies with Frankie & Annette!
Summer Sundresses for 4 generations.

And since this was ages before sunscreen was popular, a sundresses was a good way to show off your tan!  My hair was bleached out a bit by the sun and had a blondish tint that eventually turned brunette. A combination perfect  for  a sundress!

When I got older and struggled with the issue of weight, I went to Weight Watchers. Wanting to show off my almost 30 pound loss and (as it turns out, the lowest weight of my adult life,) I bought this blue & white sundress to proudly show off my sexy new body.

Age takes its toll on ones body and my left shoulder has a very noticeable cyst on it, so now I shy away from showing off that shoulder but still love the idea of a beautiful summer sundress!

If you missed it earlier in the week, don’t forget to check out Sherry’s (the 40’s model) sundress and the story behind it on her blog: Petite Over 40! Then there was Jodie’s (the 50’s model) sundress here. Charlotte’s post is coming later this week!

Sundress Now:

Summer Sundress for 4 generations. Summer Sundresses for 4 generations.  Summer Sundress for 4 generations.

Nancy’s (60’s) Outfit: This was a beautiful day at the Denver Botanic Gardens! And since Nancy had her accessories as yellow, we decided to pose by the yellow flowers (if I were paying better attention, I would have learned what these flowers were called)!

The necklace is a Brighton necklace turned around backwards. I was hoping it would show up a little better this way on the print of the sundress?

If the print of this dress looks at all familiar, it is basically the same print as the ankle pants Nancy wore in that series (see it here)! She bought them both at J.Jill’s at the same time, so it makes sense! The print certainly has great colors in it and looks good with about everything else she owns!

Dress: J.Jill (here only in a L, similar here in more sizes)~~Cardigan: Norton (similar here super great deal if you’re looking for a short sleeved cardigan in many different colors)~~Shoes:Kelly & Katie (similar here)~~Necklace: (similar here)~~Earrings: (similar here)~~Purse: Charming Charlies (similar here)~~Sunglasses: (similar here)

Thanks for reading—Don’t forget to share your sundress story in the comments—it’s just as fun to learn about you!!

Here’s some more wonderful summer dresses—these are below the knee (of course it really depends on how tall you are, right? I could buy a mini, and it’d be below my knees)

  • Love to see the older pictures compared to styles now. Nancy looks great in this lovely floral sundress and the yellow is so pretty and summery, a color I really love for the summer but I can only wear a certain shade of. The shoes and bag, lovely!

Aren’t these old remembrances so fun Debbie? I’ve always loved looking back at the old photos—and then to remember the stories that come with them, has been a great project—of course, Sherry (the 40’s generation) gets all the credit—she’s such a great storyteller, but I’m usually game to new ideas!!

  • Nicole Mölders

Thanks for linking up to Top of the World Style.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Of course Nicole–thanks for hosting it each week!!

  • Judy Gramith

The retro pictures and memories are really adding a unique and meaningful vibe to your postings of sundresses.
I grew up in similar circumstances to Nancy’s but on the shore of Lake Superior. It’s a lot cooler there in the summer and I don’t really remember sundresses until I was in my college years. I went to school in Southern Minnesota and spent a couple of summers working in Southern California. Sundresses were very much like the maxi, Bohemian versions you see today.
Can’t wait to see Charlotte’s pictures and looking forward to her stories as well.
    Great posts Jodie!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Doesn’t it bring back so many fun memories, Judy?? I find it so interesting, how certain clothing can make us remember different things from our past!!
Thanks tons for sharing your story!!

  • I love the throwback photos! It’s fun to see how the styles have changed! I love Nancy’s yellow bag and shoes!

      Thanks so much Jill!!
This collab has been quite fun—-I feel like we get so caught up in our day to day lives, that sometimes you forget some of the past!! It’s great memories!!

  • How cute are those throwback photos!? I love the sundresses on these ladies! So pretty! =)

I am really enjoying the stories and photos with these sundresses! Nancy’s dress is so pretty with all the colors! It makes accessorizing so much fun!

    • Jodie Filogomo

That’s so true Laura—I always like a piece that has so many possibilities for accessorizing!!
      Thanks for reading our stories!!

  • Loving all of the throwback photos! What a fun way to see how fashion has changed (and stayed the same!)

    • Jodie Filogomo

Right? Like the white shoes Nancy’s wearing in the old photo—I swear I’ve seen some like them at the stores!!

  • Wow Nancy what a stunner! Loved seeing your then and now pics. Always lovely. Gemma x

    • Jodie Filogomo

Isn’t she just lovely!! Thanks and have a great day!!

      • Yes really pretty then and now. x

        • Jodie Filogomo

          Thanks Gemma!!

  • Wow! Nancy IS and has always been one hot mama! Love how you posed her with those yellow flowers, that I also have no idea what they are called. lol
    http://whosaprettygirl.com

    • Jodie Filogomo

Well, now I’m embarrassed that I didn’t realize they were Columbine flowers (our state’s flower)—but I plead the excuse that I’m an indoor girl! I’ll tell Nancy your fabulous compliment!!

  • Nancy was always a cute patootie!

It is so fun looking back at old photos and hearing of people’s personal memories.

    bisous
    Suzanne

    • Jodie Filogomo

Don’t you just love these older pictures??? Mom and I were going through some of her pictures recently and it’s so endearing!!
The funny thing is there aren’t as many—-when my mom was little, they only took pictures for the events and maybe once a year at that!!

  • Terri Webster Schrandt

Loving your new spin on fashion items! Funny how it all comes back around. I remember my mom’s uniform in the 60s was sleeveless blouses, side-zip capris and flats, the very items I wear now!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Exactly!! Maybe we’ll live long enough to see them go and come again!!

  • I remember the days of halter dresses, strapless sundresses and my favorite the flaired skirt. How fashion has evolved. On hot summer days then and now I still prefer to wear a dress. They are more comfortable and cooler. Thanks for sharing today at Party at My Place.

    • Jodie Filogomo

To me some of the styles can be somewhat similar, but I feel like it’s so much more casual nowadays!! We should be wearing dresses more—they are fun and definitely cooler!

  • I loved reading this Then and Now! Simply beautiful then AND now!!

    Great post!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Elise—one of the things I think it does it makes me realize to be appreciative of ourselves now. The funny things physically that I obsessed about when younger, and now I look back and think how silly!

  • FunkyForty

Such a cute post – I love the way you are showing sundresses through the times!
    Have a lovely day.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks so much Yvonne—it is fun to reminisce about the older days—and I always love seeing the old pictures of the ones you love!!

  • Lorena Lorena

I think she looks beautiful then and now ! The dress Nancy is wearing looks really good. I find it interesting how sometimes we dress because of how we perceive things. In this case she dressed to show off her weight loss in one moment and in another, she covers because of the cyst in her arm. Sometimes these things are what drive us to dress one way or another, its interesting – what if you just wore that you wanted – regardless…. certainly food for thought 😉

    • Jodie Filogomo

You are so, so right Lorena!!This is exactly what I want shouted from the rooftops!!
I think we are just so overcritical of our little flaws and yet to others, it’s probably no big deal. I feel like I say this over & over to both Nancy & mom (and myself at times), but I’m not sure it really sinks in (i’m getting better about it finally —geez it’s only taken 50 years–ha ha). Even today, my mom complains about how white she is—and I keep saying, “what’s wrong with that—white is a fine color”—-I think she doesn’t believe me as much because I’m her daughter—-will you please tell her—maybe she’ll listen to you better!!!
Thanks for vocalizing this concept—now the question is how we get others on track??

  • Carrie @ Curly Crafty Mom

This is such a great idea for a post! I love seeing the young Nancy and how fun that she bought a dress after losing 30 lbs! I really enjoy dresses in the summer, too… I prefer maxi’s, since I don’t work and they are a little more casual. I do have some sundresses that are nice to wear when I go out with the hubs or church. I love the yellow in this floral print dress and the yellow accessories used to help the yellow pop! Loved this post!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Carrie!
It’s so funny how you think of maxis as more casual because back when I was a youngster (I feel like one of those old people that always say that) it seemed like the longer dresses were more formal. Of course, part of it is the material? Anyways…mom will be wearing a maxi in her post!!
Thanks so much for your voice!!

  • Jean Ann

I love the print on Nancys dress I may just try to get one from j Jill. The yellow flowers are columbine they come in many colors but the yellow ones seem to flourish at our lower altitude while the blue are abundant higher up.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Smack me on the head—of course, I should know Columbines—maybe i’m more used to seeing the blue ones??
It is a great print….at least with the ankle pants, I felt like it went with basically everything!!!
Thanks for the info on the flowers!

  • donnanance

Love the print of the sundress and the tucking on the bodice! Many moons ago, I wore sundresses in the summer. Dresses are much cooler to wear in the heat and humidity of summer.

    • Jodie Filogomo

They really are cooler, I think. You don’t wear dresses any more? The maxis are a great way to still wear dresses yet be more covered…. (mom’s wearing one on Saturday’s post)

  • I Love the young Nancy and adore the mature onecovered in flowers, yeahhhhhhhhhhhh for a gorgeous mum

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Sacramento!! It’s funny how we change, yet not really, huh?

  • What a stylish pictures. And the yellow goes great with it.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks so much Nancy! Since yellow is my favorite lately–I think I tend to always reach for it!
