Holiday Inspired Looks for a Casual Time

Quote of the day: “The best way to cheer youself up is to try to cheer somebody else up.” Mark Twain

With the holidays right around the corner, it’s that time again when we begin considering what to wear to all of the holiday events. Today I started out the theme of holiday inspired looks by exploring a casual look.

And if you’re close by, the 3 of us will be at Paradise Luggage in Englewood later this week. The details are below, and we’d love to have you join us.

This isn’t the first time we’ve talked about the holidays on the blog. Last year we shared memories from our past about this time period, and 3 years ago we styled holiday outfits.

Jodie’s (50+) Outfit: I know most of us think about red when putting together a holiday inspired look.

So call me rebellious when I decided to try for holiday inspired textures instead of colors. I threw together some fur, shine, and velvet all in the same outfit. It may not bring up images of the holidays per se, but I thought it turned out to be a lovely look.

The vest I recently found at a consignment store. The funny thing is the store was dark, so I didn’t realize it was a blue plaid. It seemed solid colored to me until I got it out in the sunlight. But it’s quite heavy, and the hood is removable which is nice. The other nice thing about a vest, is you can still show off your statement sleeve tops and still have a warmer layer on top.

You may have seen this photo on Instagram where I discussed this hat in detail. I have been quite enamored with hats lately, and this style is being seen everywhere. There are velvet versions, leopard versions and your tweedish versions of this baker boy hat.

I’ve also been trying to layer my scarves and necklaces together. I figured I have so many of these items, that I might as well wear them together. This necklace is one I was able to try out through my Rocksbox service. I sent it back, but requested it again so I could purchase it! Since I wear a lot of blue, it gets a lot of wear.

These jeans are my first pair of distressed jeans.

I know many of you, don’t love the idea of holes in our clothing, and I totally get that. I truly only bought these because I really wanted grey jeans and was too impatient to look for others. Once I started wearing the distressed detail, I did like it a little better, but the disadvantage is you tend to put your foot through the hole when you put your jeans on, ha ha! Therefore, I thought I’d DIY them with some grey stretchy lace. We will see how this holds up and if I like it better.

The photos don’t really show the shine of the sweatshirt very well. In real life, it almost looks like snowflakes, because it’s similar to a plastic coating on the fabric.

And the last detail that I thought might work for the holiday inspired looks idea was the velvet scarf. I wore this scarf when we styled velvet last year. It’s a lot of components for this outfit, but I really loved how it came together.

Nancy’s (60+) Outfit: Nancy recently picked up this fur lined vest at a holiday market nearby so we thought it’d be perfect for this holiday inspired look post.

The faux fur is incorporated throughout the entire inside of the vest, so I also suggested for her to wear it inside out sometime in the future.

And since there was this large expanse of material with no decoration, Nancy added some pins to it. I have fallen in love with brooches ever since we started styling them on the blog. In fact, now when I go to thrift shops, I always check out the brooch selection because there are usually wonderful deals to be had.

Holiday inspired looks with a fun vest

These jeans are really a rust color in person even though they look more red in these photos.

But any kind of red jean would be perfect for this holiday season. There are dark red versions (with tummy control, no less), burgundy versions, and bright red versions. And just think, you could easily wear them for Valentines Day also, LOL!

Nancy even added a thin scarf to the vest to bring out the black of the turtleneck. My mom made all three of us scarves like this one year, so you may see the same one on all of us at times.

Since it is basically winter, the boots come out for most of our outfits. Nancy is wearing her Jambu ankle boots that we styled 2 different ways earlier this season. The company does concentrate on comfort for their footwear, and Nancy has stated that these are the most comfortable booties she’s ever had.

Jambu is still offering a 10% discount for my readers until December 15 if you’re interested. Just use the code JTouch17. The only suggestion Nancy would say is to order these booties a half size bigger so you can also wear thick socks with them. They fit fabulously with thin socks, but they are too tight with thick, wool socks.

Charlotte’s (70+) Outfit: My mom opted for a red and green holiday inspired look.

I love how her green is more of an olive green in her boots and gloves. She has the gloves on in the top collage photo and below in the close up of the boots. In the other photos they are sitting on top of the purse.

Gloves are one of those accessories that are much needed in our part of the country. Not everyday, but when you need them, you need them. If you are looking for holiday inspired ones, then you should check out this pair or this pair. And don’t you love that many of the gloves now have a touchscreen capacity? It just goes to show how even our clothing changes with the times.

The tassel earrings are a pair made by our blogette, Jude when we met up in Seattle. Even if they are easy to make as Jude claims, what a wonderful and thoughtful gift. I probably have at least 3 pairs of tassel earrings in different colors. They are such a modern detail, and for not much money. For example, if you love blue, white, black, grey or red, your wish would be granted.

Holiday inspired looks for older women

Isn’t a red sweater or sweatshirt considered a basic?

Just like with the red jeans, this piece could certainly get a ton of use for all of the holidays. Let alone the normal days. There are definitely a ton of different variations of the red sweater and maybe you have all of them in your closet?

The poncho has been making a huge comeback lately. And there’s always the turtleneck although this one is the finer kind. You can find the red sweaters with fun details, and don’t forget the cardigans.

Holiday inspired looks with red

I will admit that I was never one to consider your purse as part of your outfit until this blogging started. But don’t you think the red sweater looks more intentional since there’s a red purse to match? Even if you didn’t choose a matching color, it can be a great way to add in some other fun color or print. At least that’s how I rationalize my purse purchases lately.

And since these black pants are not skinny ones, my mom used these Hollywood boot straps to make it easier to tuck her pants into her boots.

‘Tis the season for all kinds of holiday inspired looks. I’d love to hear your favorite way to keep festive for the casual events.

I rounded up some other fun, casual items that would be perfect for a laid back holiday inspired look:

  • Julie

Jodie, I love everyone’s looks! I’m a huge fan of vests, and both of these are wonderful! Perfect for casual winter events!

    • Thanks Julie!!
I’ve been loving vests lately too!! In fact I have a couple of posts coming out next week with vests layered over jackets!! I hope you like those too!!
      XOXO

  • Loving these cozy, layered looks and stylish winter accessories! Your blue plaid vest is such a cute piece, as is Nancy’s fur-lined vest. And I love a color palette with plaid, tan, and pops of red. It feels so festive, cozy, and preppy-chic!

    Liz

    • Thanks so much Liz!!!
I’ve really come to love vests lately, and feel like they can be more versatile than I used to think!!
      XOXO

  • Love-love-LOVE your blue Christmas look, Jodi – this might be my very favorite of everything I’ve seen on you here (which is a big surprise to me, since I’m not usually a fan of blue and absolutely adore red!) Adding the lace to the holes was inspired!

Everyone looks wonderful and very Christmas festive — have a WONDERFUL December.

Thank you so much for these kind and inspiring words!!

  • You ladies all look fabulous! I am loving the plaid vests! Your mom’s sweater is so beautiful for this time of year too. 🙂 I hope you’re all having a great week!

  • Jodie, I am loving all of your wintery holiday inspired outfits. But the lace inserts in your distressed jeans are genius! I always (repeat always) put my foot through the hole when trying to get into my distressed jeans. And one of these days I am going to destroy them completely because of that. Also, my knees get really cold in the winter! I may have to copy your DIY idea (although I probably will never find the time)…so I will just envy yours from afar! Thanks so much for linking up with me and #SpreadingTheKindness!

    • I totally know what you mean about not having time. The funny thing is I meant to cover these holes when I first bought these 2 years ago, so that’s how long it took me to get off my butt!!
      Thanks, Shelbee!!
      XOXO

  • Brigid Gallagher

I love the grey lace in your jeans Jodie, and those red Jambu boots… Fabulous.

    • Thanks Brigid—-Nancy is so glad she picked these Jambu boots—they seem to go with everything and are so comfortable!!
      XOXO

  • I don t like holes in jeans, but with the lace I think they are fabulous! And they look stunning on you! Lovely photos of all of you!

    • Thanks Nancy!! I thought the lace added a nice touch, yet it’s not super obvious!!
      XOOX

  • Jodie, you all look so stylish and chic in your cozy wear. Nancy’s vest is fabulous and your addition of lace to “patch” the rips in your jeans was brilliant.

  • I love that all you ladies are wearing some shade of red! You all look amazing and the textures of your clothes and accessories are just perfect for fall!

    http://www.mylittlenest.org

  • I like the idea of being festive and still casual, it’s hard to go wrong with fur and velvet this time of year.
    Chic on the Cheap

    • Right?? Because it’s not like you can wear these in the hot summers!! Sequins, sure, but fur would be a little crazy, LOL!!
      Thanks Lydia!!
      XOXO

  • These are really fabulous casual looks, Jodie! I love that you have elements of the holiday rather than doing something that’s just in your face…its so !such more chic! They all look lovely, but you took yours to an extra level, girl! To do all those textures and colors and have them work, rather than look chaotic… That’s special! I am a fan of distressed jeans, as long as its not overdone. I really love how you added the lace. Looks great!

    • Thanks Ronnie!!
I was trying to be rebellious but have it still look interesting, so I’m so glad you like it!! I know when we go to this Figgy Pudding Party each year, I try to wear something different than the usual red that everyone else wears!! That’s how I got the idea for this outfit….although I dress up more than this!!
      XOXO

These are perfect casual, holiday looks. Great minds think alike, Jodie. Can’t wait to see your other outfits. – Amy

  • Jodie, you had me chuckling a few times throughout this post. First when you mentioned poking your foot through the holes in your distressed jeans! I never thought of that but had to giggle when I read it! I haven’t bought any distressed jeans yet, but I may be slowly inching in that direction. I love what you did with the lace; that really gives your jeans a unique look. Nancy’s vest is adorable. I have one similar in color that I’ll be featuring on my blog in the next few weeks. I just love that plaid on her! You also had me laughing at how you rationalize your purse purchases. I do the same thing! I’m always on the lookout for a fun purse with an interesting design and color. They really can dress up an outfit. Your mom’s tassel earrings are perfect! She looks lovely in red. Thanks for these great holiday style ideas!

    • I’m glad you think I’m funny and not just crazy, Cathy!! LOL!
I have to admit that I never thought I’d have a pair of distressed jeans, but I really like them so much better with the lace added. It seems different and less silly!!
Thanks so much for all of wonderful compliments for all of us. I know mom and Nancy really appreciate it!!!
      XOXO

  • Great, casual holiday looks! I love that you opted for textures rather than for red. I think your outfit is perfect for a casual holiday outing! And I love Nancy’s cozy vest! Finally, I think everyone needs a something red, and your mom’s sweater is just perfect!

    Have a great week, Jodie!

  • Jodie I love your vest! I love that it has the hood, it’s perfect for the cooler weather where you don’t need a jacket!

    • Thanks Laura!! And it’s nice and thick, so it really does keep me warm!!|

  • Perfect casual holiday looks in my book! Dying over the plaid vests and your booties Jodie. The color is so pretty!

  • Judy Gramith

You are all so cute in your hint of festive/pre-holiday stylings
Your newsboy cap is very cute on you Jodie and it’s perfect with the blue buffalo plaid vest! I’m a long-time fan of both and pairing them is perfection! I also love your DIY of stretch lace in the distressed open knee ( genius). I wore a pair of distressed jeans for a no students/ workshop day about 7 years ago. My principal commented, “what’s up? don’t I pay you enough?”. I’ve worn them without concern ever since. 🙂 You’re right about inadvertently sticking your foot through the knee hole however! I also LOVE the necklace!!!
Nancy’s vest is really great and the little collection of holiday pins work really well on that wide lapel. The boots work so well. You know in some parts of the country they have no concept of shoe/boot sizing while mindful of a thick sock!
Charlotte’ look is again very classic and casual. Red is a great color for her. The earrings were such a pleasure to create!
    Jolly on darling ladies!

    • Thanks for all of the wonderful thoughts Jude!!!
I remember wondering why anyone would buy clothes with holes in them, and then a year later, I was doing it. If that’s not irony….But it’s funny how the modern styles can make us feel so young and hip, right? My theory is that the patches will be the next big thing, so we can cover the distressing…ha ha!!
There are times when I wished I lived in those parts of the country where you didn’t even know what a thick sock was—like today. When it’s downright chilly, and it’s holiday party time. It always seems easier to look festive in warm weather!!!!
      Thanks and happiest of Mondays!!
      XOXO

      • Judy Gramith

Colder here in Keystone today too and you really hit the nail on the head when you said it’s easier to dress festively in warmer weather. I got out the serious down jacket to go to my new Yoga class tonight.
Those days in Seattle were perfect for ALL kinds of dressing opportunities eh?

    • Charlotte Miller

Well Jolly on to you too. Thanks again for the fab earrings that i wear constantly.

  • I love cozy & casual holiday looks! They are the best kind in my opinion 😉

  • Cindy

Love your hat Jodi! And I love layering a scarf and a necklace – I need to remind myself to do this!

    • Thanks Cindy!!
I always forget to put on both a scarf and necklace, but I had worn this at my knitting retreat, so I tried to recreate it!!

  • Jodie you ladies look fabulous! I love your festive casual looks! You look like you are having fun too which is how I always feel when I am playing with fashion! Happy Monday!

  • I love the tights peeking through your jeans and the trio of brooches on Nancy’s outfit.

    Suzanne

    • Thanks Suzanne!! I actually sewed the material over the holes (well, under the holes, but you know what I mean…), but now you reminded me of why I even purchased my grey fishnets…..well, I guess I’ll have to wear them with other things now…ha ha!!
      XOXO

  • Rebecca Saffer

Each outfit is wonderful and has so many unique touches that I love. The hat is adorable on you and the lace tights under the distressed jeans is inspired. Nancy’s vest is perfect – especially with the brooches (I admit I still call them pins!) Charlotte looks terrific in the red and olive combo (love that red lipstick on her. Great job ladies!

    • Thanks so much Rebecca!!
I admit that in person I tend to call them pins too. Because I always have to stop and think of how to pronounce brooch. I always want to say the “oo” as ooooohhh like “smooch” instead of oh like “roach”. It messes me up all the time!!
      XOOX

  • I want Nancy’s vest!! I’ve got some holiday events coming up. I just realized all my outfits are black based with velvet, tulle, sequins and embroidery. Sigh… why am I not surprised. BUT, I will be rocking a red lip! Does that count for anything?? Haha
    http://styleforlessvegas.wordpress.com

    • I’m giggling a little at your black based outfits—but that totally works too, Darlene!!
And red lips are definitely the way to go!!
      Thanks!!
      XOXO

  • donnanance

Jodie, you ladies have done it again! I can’t choose a favorite, although we know we’re not supposed to play favorites. Jodie, your outfit is fabulous…I kept looking it over at all the details. Guess it’s a good thing I wasn’t standing in front of you, staring at you. That’s just rude…ha! Nancy’s vest is so cute and I love the brooches she added. When in doubt, add a brooch…I know: “Keep Calm, Wear a Brooch”. ha! BTW, what is Nancy’s lippy she is wearing? Your mom looks fab in red with that gorgeous white hair. Her boots are perfect with that outfit…just an all around perfect color. Have a splendid day! xoxo

    • That just cracked me up, Donna!! It’s true when you are standing & talking to someone, it’s hard to take in all of the details of the outfit—-that’s why I love sitting in church or out to eat, so I can observe from afar—ha ha!!
And that’s a fabulous saying about the brooch!! I can’t believe I hardly ever wore them until blogging because they work so well for so many outfits!!
That’s a great question about Nancy’s lipstick—I forwarded this comment to her. She doesn’t usually have time to reply because of this new house thing—it’s been amazing how much work goes into it…..
Thanks so much for always joining in!!!
      XOXO

  • Ok, writing while reading…I love the velvet baker hat you linked for us. It looks fun but still elegant. I’ve been lately wearing necklaces with scarves too b/c sometimes you feel you need a little glittering light up near your neck especially when the scarf is being more utilitarian and keeping your neck warm! And yes, I’ve put my foot through my distressed jeans too! I love Nancy’s vest and your mom’s boots. How do I get festive? Actually more like you with more luxurious fabrics like velvet or lace. I really try to stay away from the red and green combo since I don’t own much of either color. Happy Monday ladies!

    • I may have to get that velvet baker hat because I’ve just fallen in love with this style. Don’t get me wrong, I still love my other hats, but they get in the way too!! And the baker hat doesn’t!!
I just ended up wearing green and gold to the Figgy Pudding party that we always go to, and that was a new combination to me. It seemed Christmasy without being so common!!
      Thanks Julia!!

  • Stevie Turner

I like Nancy’s fur lined vest. Over here we’d call that a gilet. I’ve got quite a few gilets now as they’re very practical.

    • They are totally practical Stevie. In fact, the 3 of us will be trying to get a little creative with ours in a couple of weeks on the blog!!
      Thanks Stevie!!

Lovely! Especially like your blue vest and Nancy’s! And I am jealous of all the cool stuff you find at thrift stores, lol. Granted I am wearing a cool black sweater I found thrift shopping, elbow length, almost like a wrap so I guess I do sometimes feel neat items! 😃

    • The funny thing is that the 3 of us just visited a consignment store, and we all found some fun items. I do think it’s better with a friend. Sometimes other people see things with a different perspective, and we tend to oversee other items!!
      Thanks!!

    • Talk about a fun way to bring the holidays to your footwear, right, Laurel??

  • Oh these are great outfits! I smiled at the vest being different to what you thought too – a few times I’ve gotten home and looked at something I thrifted only to notice a new detail (or sometimes a flaw!) that I’d missed in the store – must be something about the stores haha!

Hope you had a great weekend! We did a lot of Christmassy things like putting our tree up which was good. They predicted wild weather but thankfully it stayed away all weekend.

I love the idea of adding the lace to the distressed jeans. This makes me want to go out and get a pair of them because this fixes the problem I have with them. I have also been looking for gray jeans. Isn’t it funny how hard it is to get just the right shade of gray? You’d think there would be no problem, but I keep trying them on and just rejecting them. What you have done with the lace is so very cool and I really do have to try it! Nancy’s pins on her vest are so festive, and a perfect way to add some seasonal fun to a casual look. You notice them right away, and I think it shows a sense of fun! Your mom looks classy as she always does. Love the red top and combining it with the olive is so current, yet also seasonal! I love seeing her in the tall boots because it just shows you that stereotypes are going by the wayside and we can continue to look current, have fun with trends and be polished and classy no matter where we are on our journey through life. You guys are the best! : )

    • The funny thing is when I first got these jeans, I was going to fill in the holes then with this other material. But I never got around to it and for awhile I didn’t mind the holes too much. But now the holes have gotten bigger….and I was going to throw away this blouse because of all of the holes in it. And I couldn’t believe how well they matched. And they were both stretchy!!! I thought it was perfect!!!
      Thanks so much Karen!!!
      Happy Monday!
      XOXO

  • Bev @ Walking Well With God

    Jodie,
I love the Baker boy hat…so cute. I’m big on vests because I live in the south and it really doesn’t get cold enough for a heavy coat and so cute vests can snaz up any pair of jeans or plain pants. I’m also always warm, so a vest is easy to shed and not have something huge to lug around if you take it off.
    Blessings,
    Bev xo

    • I’ve been finding vests so much more versatile lately, Bev. In fact, you’ll see us getting crazy with them in a couple of weeks, but you’re right! They are perfect for those of you in the warmer climate (and can I just say, I’m a little jealous because it got COLD here yesterday!!)
      Thanks!!
      XOXO

  • You all look so chic!
Love the lace idea on the distressed jeans! After my summer injury, skinnies put too much pressure on my knee and the distressed boyfriends have been just perfect. (So, not ready to duplicate your OTK looks just yet…more wishful thinking.) But you’re so right about sticking your foot through the distressing…haha. Have fun at your packing seminar!

    • Thanks so much Em!!!
It’s amazing how our injuries take quite a while to heal up totally now that we have a couple of birthday’s under our belt!! Ugh!!!
      Happy Monday!
      XOXO
