Lace Extenders for the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s: Under a Sweater

lace extenders for the 50's, 60's, & 70's.

Quote of the day: “The miracle of gratitude is that it shifts your perception to such an extent that it changes the world you see.” Robert Holden, Ph.D.

I’d like to thank Cyndi Spivey of Walking in Grace & Beauty for the inspiration for this series of posts!! I saw this scalloped lace extender in her Christmas Gift idea post (here) and thought they could be a perfect accessory for us older women. So I ordered one for the three of us to wear with different items. It’s funny how I was super excited for this item, but my mom’s reaction was quite the opposite. First off, her thought was she didn’t want a band of white at the mid part of her body and it was too young! Nancy, on the other hand, loved it so I gifted it to her at the end of the pictures! Putting the lace extender under a sweater was my thought to give more interest to a plain sweater. However, then I decided to go with more variety and show it somewhat muted against my white jeans, with a print sweater for Nancy and then with a solid colored sweater for mom.

50’s Outfit: I knitted this sweater from a pattern which I erroneously paid $80, the pattern was actually free—long story—ugh!!!

Now if you like the idea of lace on the bottom of your shirt—but don’t want an extra layer, then check these out:

  • What a cool little tip! Makes any top a bit more feminine

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Michelle—they really do add interest. I just put mine on today because my outfit looked so bland!!

  • Adding a little lace seems like a fun way to play with texture and patterns

That was exactly my thought—why not make your outfits more fun!!

I didn’t know lace extender. They can look nice or not . Much depends on the lenght and the top. Yours is cute! I should try them on me too…

    • Jodie Filogomo

I actually had to shorten our lace extender because it was definitely too long at first!

  • Anna Parkes

OK Jodie, this is a new one for me. I’ve never come across a lace extender and am not sure what I think about them. I feel it could be a Marmite piece (you either love it or hate it) and therefore wouldn’t really know unless I tried it. Thanks for featuring it. I will have to consider this a bit longer…

Well Anna….I have two more versions coming up to give you more thoughts. I really think if it’s the right length, it can be a fun piece!

  • Dee Jones

    pretty!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Dee…how nice that you think so!!

  • I’ve seen these lace extenders and have been curious about them myself. I’ve also been drawn to two-fer tops with the lace panel sewn in along the hem. I think it’s such a romantic and feminine touch. It’s great to see how you three have styled it because I didn’t really know how to style it or what sorts of tops to wear it under. The second look with the leopard sweater and ballet flats is my favorite and something I’d totally wear. It’s a look I could replicate with pieces already in my closet, and that makes the lace extender much more approachable. Such a great theme for this challenge! The three of you have really shown a variety of ways to style it!

Thanks Liz….I have two more versions coming up—it’ll be interesting if you like those too!!

I now own four lace extender tops in black, white, grey and mustard. I found mine on Jane.com, which gets them often. They really are very useful.

    • Jodie Filogomo

So you’re petite like us, Tracey—did you need to shorten yours? Or were the ones from jane.com not as long?

  • I really like these and haven’t seen these before!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I’m glad you like them…another blogger said she got hers from jane.com! I think it’s an easy way to spruce up an outfit.

  • Three things…
OMG on the $80 FREE pattern .Ugh!
    Love Nancy’s necklace
The look on your mom’s face says it all! LOL The thing is…her outfit is my favorite!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I know…I don’t think she gave that look to the camera on purpose…but it was the only one I could use for the post! But I agree…her outfit is exactly what I was going for!
as for the $80—most of it was for the shipping of this knitting magazine from overseas (it was listed in euros and I didn’t know the conversion—i didn’t think it’d be that much—-it was a magazine for gosh sakes). Needless to say when i got the magazine, this pattern (which was the one I had seen advertised) was actually a free download. hey—it makes a good story!

  • I’m kind of with your Mom on this one. At least for me. Good on you all for giving it a go though!

    bisous
    Suzanne

    • Jodie Filogomo

Mom will be happy to have someone on her side!

  • Love the added bit of texture the lace gives to these outfits…great extra visual interest 🙂

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Tara!!

  • Amy D. Christensen

I love lace, but I think I’m with your mom on her reaction…nothing to accentuate that part of my body! Ha, ha. But that said, I love your mom’s outfit!

    • Jodie Filogomo

It’s that whole idea of just trying it, right? I think it looks great on mom too!!

  • Lorena Lorena

I had never heard of lace extenders and I have to say that these look really good – on all 3 of you ! I am a fan.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Lorena, I thought they could add fun to our outfits….without a big price tag!

  • PetiteOver40

I love the layered look on all three of you! I’m going to send you an email about my lace phobia because it might pertain to our collaboration and I think you’ll get a kick out of it! But I do love how you’ve extended the tops. That would come in so handy and looks very nice!!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Ha ha ha ha ha ha!! That email is the best thing ever (and just for fun, maybe I’ll pick lace for my item—). I think one of the advantages to this era is the different materials available. It might look like lace, but many of those items have spandex in them and are quite soft! You must give them a try! Thanks for the fabulous email!

  • Oh, these are really nice looks! I have been admiring these on a couple of other bloggers, so I was excited to see your take on them, too. Your mom’s reaction really cracked me up ! 🙂

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Jennie! It’s funny because we can be that typical mother/daughter –I like what she doesn’t and vice versa!!

  • the love the lace peeking out from underneath! so feminine and chic!

    kileen
    cute & little

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Kileen!!

  • Laura

I’ve thought about getting a lace extender because I love the layered look of them without the bulk. I think you’ve all just convinced me!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I’m sold too!! I know I could get a shirt with lace on the bottom, but then I can’t change it up!! I think that’s why I like it so much!

  • cyndispivey

The lace extenders look great on all of you!! So pretty!!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks again to you Cyndi!!
