Leggings for the 50’s. 60’s, & 70’s: Provided by StyleWe

We’ve all read the articles that leggings aren’t pants, and many of us older women have questioned ourselves on whether it’s appropriate to wear them in the first place.

So let’s address this style choice with a couple of examples and rationales!

Leggings are an extremely comfortable piece of clothing. And I’m a firm believer that any aged woman can wear them with confidence and style!

One of the tricks that both Nancy & my mom use it to buy a pair that isn’t so tight or cheap. They can look very much like pants, especially if they aren’t skin tight. And some leggings even have more of a flair hem, so they don’t look like hosiery tights!

When StyleWe.com approached me to work with their company, I thought this might be a perfect time to try out their leggings. I found us three different styles and variations, and then outfitted us with those leggings for two occasions.  Let me know what you think in the comments below. How do you usually style your leggings? And check out the special discounts below too!

Jodie’s (50’s) Casual Outfit: For my pair of leggings, I went with a pair that really looks like skinny jeans. They have back pockets and are quite thick. I really wanted these snakeskin leggings at first. Would you wear the snakeskin version?

Stylewe leggings for casual & dressy

Since they do look like regular jeans, I even wore them with a top that didn’t cover my rear all the way.  You can’t tell in these photos, but the hem length on these comes right to my ankles (it’s always a bonus when I don’t have to shorten pieces!)

I’ve been seeing bomber jackets quite a bit lately. So thanks for the help of my blogette, Jude, and my husband, who both gave me some advice on how to make my mint green, lace bomber seem more wintery. I added my fur vest over top of it and a wool scarf (which is actually my husband’s) to coordinate!

Jodie’s (50’s) Dressy Outfit: For my dressier outfit, I wore a tunic and my ankle booties and then layered my glittery, gold long cardigan over the top!

Stylewe leggings for casual & dressy.

Wow…in the closeup shot, you can certainly see all of the print I wore. I didn’t even think about how the tunic is a subtle black & burgundy print. To me, I really see it as a solid (maybe I need some better lighting in my closet??).

Stylewe leggings for casual & dressy.

I went with my normal sizing with these leggings. Some of you may not like the creases that show up around the knees and ankles. I actually like this, because then it seems more like jeans to me!

Nancy’s (60’s) Casual Outfit: Since Nancy already had black leggings in her possession, I ordered her some navy ones!

Stylewe leggings for casual & dressy.

I figured they would go perfectly with her lace up shoes that we styled here, here & here.

This sweater is more of a boxy, coat type sweater that we purchased many years ago at Never Pay Retail, which sells sample clothing in Denver. It’s great because you get quality clothing for a fraction of the retail price!

Nancy’s (60’s) Dressy Outfit: Nancy just went to a holiday boutique market and picked up this super fun skirt. Even though it’s a black skirt, I wanted to show it paired with the navy leggings. The skirt is considered a mini skirt, but since we are pairing it with leggings and tall boots, I think it looks nothing but appropriate!

Stylewe leggings for casual & dressy.

I figured we’d add in some different blue with the teal colored shirt too since we had her in the navy leggings!!

The silver jacket brings out the silver from the beads on the skirt! I told Nancy she must love the designer Desigual since that was the brand of shirt she had picked to wear of Rob’s shirts in the post about wearing men’s shirts, here.

Charlotte’s (70’s) Casual Outfit: For my mom’s leggings, I ordered her a size bigger than she normally takes. She did end up taking them in just a little on the inseam, but I wanted to make sure that they weren’t too tight. You can see, that they have some nice drape to them, so mom can wear them almost like pants!

Stylewe leggings for casual & dressy.

We styled her poncho from the 1970’s with the black leggings. The other teachers at her school used to kid her about this poncho. They always called it her horse blanket!

Stylewe leggings for casual & dressy.

Here’s a view from the rear. You can see how the legs of the leggings aren’t super tight and constricting. Mom did have to shorten hers by 5 inches!

Charlotte’s (70’s) Dressy Outfit: To try to dress up the black leggings, I had mom go with a mostly black outfit, since that seems to be the norm for many women.

Stylewe leggings for casual & dressy.

Black is not the greatest near mom’s face, so I added in a pink scarf and had the ends drape down her back. Of course I had to add in a brooch too. The brooch is not only stylish, but functional. It’s holding the scarf, turtleneck & sweater all together!

Stylewe leggings for casual & dressy.

Since this outfit was to look more dressed up, I had mom wear her shiny leather boots. She has a suede pair, but I thought that the shine of these would add in some nice sheen!

I will have to say I was really impressed with the leggings we received from StyleWe. A couple of important factors when looking at these pieces are to make sure they aren’t see through and aren’t too tight. You know, that I do love a great deal, but it certainly isn’t helpful if the cheap items end up being non wearable!

The company also has some beautiful dresses and tops. Many times, their clothing items are on a flash sale, which is why my mom’s particular leggings are out of stock. But check out their website and enjoy the eye candy!

And since it’s the season for shopping, StyleWe has a couple of promotions going for the black Friday’s pre-sale. These are only good from Nov. 21-Nov. 24!!

Ooooh! Charlotte’s poncho is divine. Thumbs up to leggings. So nice to pair with our boots and booties.

    • Exactly!!
My mom loves that she’s had this poncho forever!!! And it still looks great!
      Thanks Kathleen!
      XOXO

  • Keri Roberts

The leggings look wonderful! I like how you’ve styled all the outfits. I’ll go check out StyleWe, thanks for the recommendation!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Keri!!
Leggings are certainly something that every woman can wear!!

  • Jodie, I love leggings and you Ladies totally captured them here. I wear them a lot during the winter with my long sweaters and boots … I really love Nancy’s riding boots very cool xo

    • Jodie Filogomo

They have gotten to be such a functional piece for any age group, don’t you think?
Thanks for the kind words, Carla!!

  • PetiteOver40

Leggings are so fun and I love how you styled them! My favorite looks are your dressier ones. You’ve become so adept at mixing prints that you didn’t even notice you had mixed them! They completely work together! Nancy looks practically like a 20-something in her adorable skirt! And your mom looks so chic in her all-black outfit. As for your mom’s “horse blanket,” it’s beautiful!! I would wear that in a heartbeat.

    Hugs,
    Sherry

I’m so glad I was willing to try leggings…I never had any until I started blogging!
But it seems like they are so versatile!! A great example of how we are never too old to learn, right?

  • Kristin & Megan

Big YES to leggings! I live in them come winter. Love how you all styled them!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks guys!!
I actually am just starting to wear them more and am really excited to see the outfits I can come up with!!

  • I need to get more leggings and style them better. Wearing it with a big baggy t-shirt only works occasionally. Thanks for sharing on #FridayFrivolity

    • Jodie Filogomo

Ha—that made me laugh Audrey!! But that is the perfect way to wear them around the house!!
You could pop a long, fringe sweater over top when you have to leave the house—and it’d look perfect!!
      Thanks for stopping by!!

  • kristin mccarthy

Without getting to rock leggins a few times a week I would be lost!

    • Jodie Filogomo

It can be the best “uniform”, right?
      Thanks for stopping by Krirstin!!

  • You always looks so good ladies, I love the spirit here so much!

Thanks Passant—we might as well have fun, right?

      • What you do here is the real definition of FUN!

  • Mireille

    Lovely looks! I am inspired!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks for such a nice comment Mireille!!

  • I think an important rule with leggings no matter your age is to stick with dark colors and second to that is size. I adore all of the looks but the second one of Nancy’s and the first one of Charlotte’s tie is my favorites. The flirtiness of the shorter skirt seems to suit Nancy and Charlotte’s poncho is fabulous (the necklace is perfect too). This was another outstanding post, Jodie.

    • Jodie Filogomo

I really think the size is key. Of course you don’t want them too baggy, but too tight is never good either!!
Thanks for such a wonderful comment, Rena!! I really appreciate it!

  • I am such a leggings gal. I wear a pair almost every weekend. Love the way each of your styled yours

    michellespaige.com

    • Jodie Filogomo

Well, I can totally see why! They sure make getting dressed super easy!!
      Happy Thanksgiving, Michelle!!

  • Terri Webster Schrandt

Love leggings and especially love yours and Charlotte’s looks. I had seen an older woman at church wearing a similar look and it was chic and relevant! Plus comfortable! Now that it’s boot weather, lightweight leggings are awesome!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Don’t you just love when you see older women around town who look great?
I think leggings can be perfect for us older women—it’s so much better than the polyester pants, right?
      Thanks for the thoughts, Terri!!

  • I love your styling. What a great idea to order your mom’s one size up! She looks fantastic in them. Especially the poncho outfit with that necklace! And I love Nancy’s cream jacket with that outfit. You of course have it nailed for yourself as well. In both outfits.
It is a fine line for leggings between good and bad and you stayed perfectly on the good side.
    Greetje

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks for the kind remarks Greetje!!
I do think that leggings can get a bad wrap. Because people wear jeans inappropriately too, I think!!

  • Nicole Mölders

I love the great choice of designers at StyleWe

    • Jodie Filogomo

Don’t they have some nice items? Thanks for stopping by Nicole!!

  • Amy D. Christensen

These are great, Jodie. I have a number of pairs of leggings and want to do more with them. I need to be more intentional about putting outfits together, even when I am not taking pictures of them. Leggings are a great thing to wear in the winter for a heavier layer without adding bulk. Love all your outfits. Great ideas for how to style these. Thanks. – Amy

    • Jodie Filogomo

I know exactly what you mean—I’ll have something in my closest, but until I figure out how to wear it a couple of ways, it just sits there!
That’s why these series have actually been beneficial even for me!! 🙂

  • I love leggings! As an apple shape it is near impossible to find pants that fit in the waist but leggings have lots of stretch but still can look like pants. I think they pair perfectly with a tunic. I actually like all three of the dressy outfits. Your purple button-up tunic/dress is so pretty and flattering. Julia

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks for joining in on the discussion Julia!!
You’re right—leggings can be the perfect bottoms for any shaped body!! And no alterations needed (usually)!!

  • I WANT YOUR MOM’S PONCHO!!!!!!
    #SOcute

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Isn’t is the bomb?
She has so many fabulous pieces—we just can’t find them all in her small closet—ha ha!!

  • Leggings can be very comfy, but I have to say I don’t wear them often. I like the faux leather pants (look more like leggings, though they are well made pants really) from Melissa McCarthy that I bought recently, it’s like wearing PJs. I think you styled leggings in so many ways, there are ideas for any age and style preferences here. I love all the pattern mix and layering going on! And I love your Mom’s poncho/ruana.

    • Jodie Filogomo

And really, I guess it’s what you define as leggings. Because I have some jeans, that say jeggings on their label—but I always thought they were just normal lightweight jeans (and even after I saw the label—I ignore it!)
For myself, I was never super comfortable in the tighter jeans & such until lately. I think getting older has finally made me realize that this is my body and I should enjoy it!!
      Thanks for your input, Natalia!!

  • Mother Daughter

I was never much of a leggings fan till I got into Lularoe, now I love them and wear them all the time. These are all great looks for you ladies.

    • Jodie Filogomo

I know exactly what you mean, Victoria.
While I was working I guess I thought they were silly. But now—-it’s true love!!
      Thanks for the kind words!!

  • Molly Hogan

Love this! Leggings are such a go to.

  • sue

I love leggings Jodie so comfortable and also warm! I love the poncho and you all look fabulous as usual with some great styling ideas. Thanks!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks so much Sue!!
They are super comfy…which is probably why we all gravitate towards them, right?

  • I’m glad to see leggings coming out of the closet! You’very styled them in so many great ways. My favourite look is your burgundy tunic and long cardigan. Looks very luxe.

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks so much Gail.
I have to admit, I used to think leggings were silly. That is until I bought my first pair. And now, I think they can be such a fabulous option for us older women. It was definitely a lesson in don’t knock it until you try it!!
So do you wear leggings much?

      • Tend to wear them to the gym (I love the patterned ones) and around the house but now I’ve seen how you have been wearing them I might experiment a bit more.

        • Jodie Filogomo

You definitely should—especially since you already have them!!
I thought the patterned ones were only for the youngins—but I have a pair now and think they are the cat’s meow!!

  • Hurray for leggings!🙌🙌 I love them. I love Nancy s dressy outfit, very nice skirt. And horse Blanket?? My, it s a fabulous poncho! And your different prints are great together but I also love the bomber with the scarf!

    • Jodie Filogomo

They are a perfect item—especially for Thanksgiving when I tend to consume quite a bit of food!!
Thanks for the fabulous comment, Nancy!!

  • Judy Gramith

You have shown a variety of legging options in this post. I think that’s really great because leggings are FAR more versatile than many women realize and as you pointed out, they’re incredibly comfortable. A garment you can wear for doing Yoga should be a “go to” for more women in our busy lives!! This posting is a wonderful leggings 101 lesson Jodi!!
Your styling with shorter and longer tops as well as short and long boots and ballet flats also reveals the versatility of leggings. I do think that any heavier top (long sleeved sweaters, jackets, coats, and ponchos) look best with a boot or equally chunky shoe. That said , although I LOVE Nancy’s skirt/ legging combo and wear that look often myself I think a bootie would provide better balance for her outfit. Her colorful sweater (LOVE!) is a terrific topper for the leggings.
I LOVE Charlotte’s poncho and the fact that she is right “on trend” with this gorgeous plaid horse blanket! Charlotte is such an amazing fashion role model for her age group. She looks fabulous!!!
Your own outfit’s texture and pattern mixing as well as long and short boots are “spot on” Jodie! Your pretty lacy bomber and fur vest combination is really unique and works well.
    GREAT POSTING!!!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks again for the help in styling my bomber to be more winter appropriate!!
I never thought about leggings much when I was working, but now that I’m retired, I’m all about them!! Since you wear them often, how many pairs do you have?
I have another friend selling LulaRoe, and I was just thinking I might need another pair!!

      • Judy Gramith

        OMG!!!
Because I wear leggings for fitness purposes and that’s an everyday deal I probably have 50 pairs of leggings. Most of those are strictly fitness but I often even style them with little fitness type/sport skirts. They’re so much easier to get by with in public that way.
So …I have some types of leggings that I don’t wear for fitness and some that can be dual purpose…
I’ve outed myself and clearly am a leggings hoarding nut. I do buy inexpensive ones though.

        • Jodie Filogomo

Hey—we all have our addictions—and at least you wear them!!
I love the idea of the sport skirt over them—-that’s a brilliant way to go from working out to running errands without having to change your entire outfit! Can you say future blog post??

          • Judy Gramith

            Sounds fabulous!!
I’m thinkin the Charlotte could easily turn a basic skirt style into a sport skirt look.
            Fabric,zippers, patch pockets, maybe a drawstring waist…
Another thing I often do is purchase those basic swim suit skirts. They’re GREAT to even work out in because they’re short; but they create the coverage of a tunic!!!
Kind of like what Greetje did to lengthen her dress for the Paris trip. DO you remember how she wore a straight skirt under her dress? GENIUS!

  • Love these different styles, leggings definitely are pants when you style them correctly!

  • What a great job styling Jodie. I have a couple pair of jean leggings and like you mentioned I dont like them tight. Love how you styled it with your gold cardi and plum tunic. The gold is festive! Also love Charlotte’s green plaid poncho! I would wear that for sure.

Mom’s poncho is a perfect example of how styles do come back from the past!! And she’ll give me ribbing about it because I’m more of a purger instead of a keeper!!
Thanks for such a nice comment, Jess!!

  • I love leggings they’re so versatile! You ladies look great.

  • Queen of Rods

Your mom looks so youthful in both of her outfits; really flattering on her. I love the large link necklace with the poncho. As for the snakeskin leggings, I think that they would look great on you 🙂

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks for the positive feedback Janet!! I may still try those snakeskin leggings yet! But then again, how many pairs do I need, right?
Thanks for the compliments for mom—I forwarded it to her so she can feel the love!!

  • Well, you probably know that I LOVE leggings! You picked great pairs! There is such a difference in the thickness and quality of leggings! The ones you picked really seem more like pants!

And you styled them perfectly! Everyone looks amazing!

    Have a wonderful Thanksgiving week!

I have a couple pair that are quite tighter—but I think I like the ones that look like pants better lately. Then I don’t have to worry about if my behind shows a little underneath my tops!!
Thanks for the kind words, Andrea!!

  • Wow! You all look fabulous!
I wear black and dark jeggings as my usual go to. I occasionally wear the thinner legging styles, but only with a skirt or dress. Snakeskin? Hell, no! But, Jodie, if anyone could pull those off, it would be you! Love your mom’s “horse blanket” poncho outfit…it looks really polished to me! Great ideas!!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Em—you crack me up!! You wouldn’t wear snakeskin leggings? But you’re so young and vibrant??
But maybe I understand—when I was younger, I certainly wasn’t as adventuresome in my clothing choices. It’s only been since retiring and blogging that I’ve thrown caution to the wind!!
      Thanks for the love!!

      • Young and vibrant, lol…now you’re cracking ME up!

With your shape, YOU could definitely wear those… My kids would harass me to death: “Mom, the snake called and wants it’s pants back” My punishment for raising four chip-off-the-block smart-a$$es. 🙂

        • Jodie Filogomo

Well—kids do put a damper on your style–they think they know it all—but it’s a good way to raise them!!
Just wait until they leave the house—then you can wear the snakeskin leggings until your heart’s content.
And better a smart a$$, than a dumb a$$, we always say!!
          🙂

  • Bernadette Laganella

I love leggings, so thank you for putting me in touch with this site.
