Little Black Dress–Summer 3: For a Formal Event

Quote of the Day: “I was born to learn, to grow, to expand, to love, to create, to enjoy, to see the beauty in all things including myself…But I was NOT born to be perfect.” Anonymous

So the formal event is why the little black dress was created, right?  Seriously what did women wear before the LBD?  Of course, I had to add a little this and that to the mix.  How boring to wear just the dress!  These exact same dresses were styled for wearing on a casual day (here) and for a work day (here).

50’s LBD:  Ok, Pam, I wore this shrug again for you! My mother made the bracelet for me…it’s a bunch of gold buttons on some elastic.  You, too, could make one like it if you wanted!

60’s LBD:  A long wrap is a perfect way to accessorize your dress in case the event happens to be chilly.  Nancy just wrapped it around her arms for the pictures, but it could be worn more traditionally as well.

70’s LBD:  Mom got this lace blazer in Japan and the earrings in Spain.  We’ll just call this an international outfit!!

Are you a lover of the LBD?  How many do you have?

I’ve decided I’m going to change LBD to Little Blue Dress (since that color looks so much better on me).  These are all available in blue, don’t you just love them?

  • Kathleen McDermott

Very pretty looks. I love your dressy shrug, Nancy’s wrap and Charlotte’s lace jacket. I have oodles of buttons and want to try to make the fantastic button bracelet that Charlotte made for you. Must be tutorials online. (Wonder how Nancy’s red 👠 would look with her outfit!) P.S. Charlotte’s dress is so lovely.

What a fabulous idea for Nancy’s red shoes with this outfit, Kathleen. I know sometimes I need to step back and recheck everything. I tend to get dressed (and style others) with the pants & top, then shoes, then accessories. And sometimes maybe I need to change out the shoes to better match the accessories?? Even I get in a habit that needs to be changed at times!!
If you can’t find a tutorial on the bracelet…I’m sure mom could walk you through it!! 🙂

  • I seriously think I am just going to have to make my own button bracelet! Your mom did an amazing job – it is gorgeous!

    • It was relatively easy (she said) and it’s such an individual piece!! Thanks Jennie!

  • larissa

I almost always feel that the 60’s styles seem to be more appropriate and up-to-date than the 50’s and 70’s I see posted. Is it just me???

    • Good question Larissa. It could be that I take Nancy shopping more often, whereas mom & I have so much accumulated that we try not to shop! Maybe I need to purge and go shopping?!!

  • Everyone looks gorgeous!

  • Lesley

I’m from the UK and have a very similar figure to the 50’s lady, so it interests me. However I think uk and USA style is so different that they just don’t work for us. I can’t put my finger on why?? These days we have so many shops in common, like Gap, Dorothy Perkins and New Look, yet the average American and average Brit, still dress differently. I would never wear the sandals and shrug in that colour with black. I love the choice of coloured dresses though. Anyone else have thoughts on why Us and Uk style differ please?

    • Lesley, I’m very intrigued by this comment. I read some UK fashion blogs and haven’t noticed/thought about differences in style beyond personal differences. Of course blog style could be different than normal style? So how do you feel it’s different? If anything, I feel the US is more casual (and maybe not in a good way), and the temps are usually warmer (so not as much layering). But I have to ask? Why wouldn’t you wear gold & black together? I’ve worn this shrug with other colors but my initial thinking (especially for dress up) is to pair it with black. Thanks for such an interesting dialogue!

  • I love the shrug! Adds a bit of bling to an otherwise simple outfit, and I am in LOVE with the lace jacket your mom is wearing. Superb styling as usual!

  • Your mom is very talented. Would love her to make me a bracelet like that. Seriously! Has she thought about going into business?

    • How nice Brenda…she loves being retired with no stresses, so she only sews and crafts for friends & family!!

  • That lace blazer is gorgeous! I love seeing all of your black dress style tips too! Susan

    • Thanks Susan!! We’re on the same wavelenghth of LBDs!

  • Pam Miller

Even before I read your comment, I told Tim about the shrug. Such a versatile piece of clothing. Pam

    • I’m really trying to wear it more since you complimented it so much! I’ve even worn it with jeans!!

  • To answer your question…Yes, I do love the LBD and I only have two of them…at the moment. 😉
Love it paired with the shrug and how cute is that button bracelet!

    • Okay…so I’m going to be the devil’s advocate and ask, “why would you need more black dresses?” I keep trying not to buy things I already have, so I’m projecting onto you…ha ha!! Did you sell your house yet?

      • When I do an event I need to wear something thrifted to represent who I am and what I do. So I spent $7.00 for a brand new Ann Taylor LBD. I just sold a ton of clothes to Buffalo Exchange yesterday trying to downsize before we move. No offers on our house yet, but 4 showings again this week.

        • Of course, you should wear something thrifted…that makes total sense! Good luck with the showings (we may be doing that soon too….crazy us!)
