Maxi Dress for the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s: The Dressy Wear

Quote of the day: “You never know what’s going to happen.  You have to live in the moment.” Jennifer Lopez

If you live long enough every style comes back to its glory, although sometimes with a different name.  The maxi dress is no exception. It is again all the rage for all age groups.  In my household as a kid, we called them long dresses, and I loved wearing them because of  the flowy silhouette!  It’s funny, because when they came back in style, I thought, “nah…I’m not going to wear that again.” But considering it’s versatility, I think it’s perfect for us older ladies!   I’ll start by styling the maxi dress for dressy occasions, since a longer dress is usually thought of as more formal.

50’s Maxi Dress: After my friend gave me this dress (thanks Linda), I had to alter it.  I closed up the neckline somewhat and shortened the length of the dress about 3 inches. I added a necklace, a silver bracelet and some heels to dress it up.

60’s Maxi Dress: Adding a sparkly jacket & heels, dresses up this short sleeve long dress. And by adding the jacket it makes the outfit perfect for any over air-conditioned place.

70’s Maxi Dress:  I had mom wear a silky, white blouse over her dress like a lightweight jacket.  Her dress needs a belt for some waist shaping, so we used a clear one here with the buckle in the back!

Thanks and happy reading!!  Do you love the maxi?

There are an abundance of maxi dresses available.  I picked out some “dressier” ones! (And under $70)

All lovely. I love the watercolor print of your dress, Nancy’s silver-grey jacket and Charlotte’s delicate silky blouse. Perfect dress-up looks. I just bought 2 maxis online and plan to get more for lounging by pool or at my cousin’s beach house. Can always shorten them if I tire of the length and use the cut-off length for an infinity scarf.

    • Jodie Filogomo

That is the best thing about a maxi—they can always be shortened when and if the style isn’t your favorite down the line!!
And you sound exactly like my mom—she probably has a dozen scarves that are from left over material!! 🙂

I don’t often wear long dresses, but your selection is very inspiring…I should give them a chance!!
In love with the silver bracelet…

    • I totally understand…I still think I like normal length dresses better since I still like my legs, but it is nice to feel part of the crowd!!

  • Jo

All three dresses look gorgeous and very feminine :)) and it shows they suit all ages too. I find them very cool and comfortable in summer.

  • I love a maxi….hides a multitude of imperfections and looks effortlessly chic. I love all 3 looks but my favourite is ’60’s’, love the jacket. XXX

    • Thanks Samantha! It’s taken me awhile to embrace the maxi, but I’m liking it more and more!

  • Oh, your maxi is just gorgeous, Jodie! In love the with the beautiful colors! I really need to add a black one like Nancy”s to my wardrobe. Love the creative way your mom belted her maxi! Going to have to remember that tip.

    • Hi Jennie!! I find the newer maxis have elastic at the waist so you don’t always need a belt—which I like! Thanks for checking in!

  • Maxis are my favorite and so comfortable! I use to think I would look awful due to my petite height, but am so glad I gave it a try. I love these dressy versions and see so many ideas for people to wear for a wedding which is becoming popular. In my area I can’t go anywhere without seeing them. I will say sadly that it seems to be stopping with women in their 50’s in my region.

    • Why do you think that is? Do you think we’re too old for them? I really think they can be ageless, but maybe the older women don’t want to try it?

      • I have no idea but I have noticed that and wondered? Of course then I instantly thought, I am probably going to be a rebel when I reach that age, lol. I think sometimes we get stuck in old rules that were part of our parents and grandparents generation.

  • I’m an avid maxi lover! I’ve just done two posts back to back on maxis purely by chance; one daytime one and one more dressy. I love yours, especially with the silver bracelet and the necklace. I think maxis are so versatile and I love the way you’ve styled all three of them. The jewellery you chosen is so striking.

    • Thanks Jacqueline for the wonderful compliments!! I’ll be showing the same dresses for casual & appointment wear thursday & saturday!!! Hope you check them out too!!

  • I’m a huge fan of the maxi and yours is stunning! I do have to tell you though…while out with my mother-in-law I had her critique what others were wearing and she saw an older lady in a maxi dress and gave it two thumbs down because she said that the lady was too old to be wearing it. BTW, I disagreed with her on that one.

    • It’s interesting because when I’d have older patients come in (when I was working) in “hip” & “trendy” clothes, I thought it was fabulous!!! Yet, I sometimes have that question am I too old for this? Maybe it’s your mindset? In your mother-in-law’s case, did you like the maxi on the lady (because sometimes I think it’s the style/fit)?

      • I did like the maxi on her. My MIL said the lady was to old to be wearing a maxi with red and white Chevron stripes.
