Maxi Dress for the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s: The Appointment Wear

Quote of the day: “The way I see it, you have to take every chance you get because there may not be another one.  You have to learn from your mistakes, because nobody’s perfect.  You have to laugh, love and live every day as if it’s your last.” Mary-Kate Olsen

I came up with a new category for the maxi (and used it for my kimono post here) because I didn’t think the maxi dress would fit easily into the work appropriate category.  So I came up with the Appointment Wear category. Don’t laugh, but as we get older it seems like there are more and more appointments to frequent (be it health related or finance related).  And as such, I think one should dress sharply, relevant to the type of appointment you have.  If it’s a professional office you are visiting, then by all means, dress somewhat professional.  You can view these same dresses styled for dressy wear (here).

50’s Maxi Dress: By adding this moto vest, I was trying to take away from the beachiness vibe of this dress.

60’s Maxi Dress: A lightweight cardigan is always a good idea to have in the summer.  I find we need it more for the inside of building, than the outside.

I love all 3 outfits and your styling touches on each. The white touches on Charlotte’s are a perfect touch of light. The delicate, flowy cardi on Nancy is soft and charming against the black dress. Your vest is such a cute tailored touch to your soft dress. I like the term “appointment” and these outfits fit the bill for warm weather. “Office wear” hasn’t applied to me for years as I stopped working when I was 49 (needed more time to bargain shop and organize my wardrobe). Just bought 2 maxi-dresses online and plan to alter the saggy flutter sleeves so I can wear them under a topper of some sort.

      Thanks Kathleen!!
Heck, I figure half the time between my mom, Nancy & I we are going to some professional appointment of some kind!! And it kills me to see people in their pjs (not figuratively, but you know what I mean!!)
So when you alter the sleeves—do you keep the extra material? My mom usually makes a flower pin out of the leftover if there is enough!!

I would not have thought of saving the small scraps, but thanks to your blog and seeing how Charlotte made flowers, I will!

  • Lovely maxi looks Jodi. I love maxis in summer as they are easy to style and comfortable. Hope you had a lovely day on the 4th. xo

  • Thanks 4 linking up to Top of the World Style. Great outfit suggestions

  • Loved your maxis. It looks like you and I were on the same wave length this week 😉 Thanks for adding your flair to the #funsummerfinds linkup!

  • I can see you now understand all that you were missing before you gave that maxis a chance. They are liking wearing a nightgown in public : )

    bisous

    • You hit the nail on the head (except I don’t like nightgowns…they bunch up around my legs when I sleep)….hopefully the maxi will stay put..ha ha!!

  • Doesn’t this just show how versatile maxis can be. I love how you’ve styled them and given them a different vibe to the dressy versions. The moto vest gives your one some edge, I love the red sandals with the black one and I want all the jewellery please on the last one!

    • Thanks Jacqueline! They can be versatile…you just have to play around in your closet (one of my favorite activities!!)

  • Love a good maxi!! These are great! The BooHoo is my favorite but I would wear any of these to the office with a cardi! Great looks lady!! May you have a wonderful day!!

  • LOVE how you styled all three!!!!! That moto vest is awesome! A maxi is ALWAYS a great option…I just wore a maxi (skirt) yesterday. 🙂

    • Thanks Darlene!! I think you should buy a maxi for your MIL and see if she’ changes her mind…and tell her I had lots of feedback that we’re not too old for one!!!

      • She would never do it. In fact she said she is now to old to wear a dress…although she does own two of them.
