Obi Belt for the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s: Worn over a Skirt
Quote of the day: “Success should be worn like a t-shirt, not a tuxedo.” Priyanka Chopra
I almost think this is my favorite way to wear our obi belts from this series. My rationale is the belt basically ties the shirt & skirt together nicely. And Jude, my blogette, was able to join us again—so scroll down to see all 4 of us!
My wonderful mother made these obi belts for us with some leftover material from her stash! You can see that they are not exactly the same. Mom first made her belt, and doubled the material for the wide portion. However, she said this was too much work, and thus skipped that step for Nancy’s & my belt! Mom also made her ties narrower. She didn’t do this for our belts because she said she didn’t know our exact measurement. So Nancy & I wrapped it around our waist one and a half times and then were able to tie the ends wherever it fits.
Jodie’s (50’s) Outfit: Ever since I did the post on wearing your ankle boots with dresses or skirts, I have been obsessed with this look. I’m not sure why one style or item will resonate with me sometimes, but I just love this particular look!
I’ve also joined in on the choker necklace craze. I’m not sure a black one would be as flattering on me with my complexion, so I opted for this red bead one. To me, it’s a little more subtle. Besides, I felt the need to carry the red from the obi belt into the rest of my outfit somehow.
This sweater was an unexpected find from Maurices a couple of years ago. I love that it’s a mesh sweater, so warmer for the cooler months, yet not too warm. It also has a faux leather trim along the zipper and neck!
This skirt was absconded from my mother’s closet. She has the matching jacket (check it out in the post from 2 years ago here) which fits her fabulously. The skirt fit me, so we split up the set!

Nancy’s (60’s) Outfit: I had Nancy put on her maxi skirt to style with the obi belt.
Since we picked a casual sweatshirt cardigan as her topper, I wanted to add in a large necklace. Nancy even pulled out the blue earrings since there are some blue beads on the necklace!
This is the same maxi skirt that Nancy & mom wore this summer for our Maxi Skirt series here, here & here. And looking back, I can see that none of those outfits involved tucking in the shirt to the maxi. Like I said in the first post of this series, Nancy isn’t a fan of tucking in her shirts. But she actually liked it this time with this belt.
This day was warm, so we weren’t worried about the slit up the side. But in the colder months, I could see Nancy wearing tights and her tall, grey boots with this skirt.
Skirt: Old Navy (here it’s under $10 now!)~~Cardigan: Land’s End (similar here as a sweater with no hood)~~Top: Cold Water Creek (similar here)~~Boots: Impo (similar here)~~Belt: Mom made it (similar here)~~Necklace: DSW (similar here with lots of colors but not as bulky)~~Earrings: (similar here)
Charlotte’s (70’s) Outfit: For mom’s obi belt outfit with a skirt, I had her put on her faux leather skirt. You know the next sentence will be, and my mom made her skirt–ha ha!
I can see how the earrings get a little lost in the print of mom’s shirt. She did point that out when we were styling this outfit. But then again, it’s nice to style outside the rules at times!
Just like with these obi belts that mom made for the 3 of us, it’s the same with the leather skirt. Mom made us each a skirt so we could do an entire series around the item. If you missed that series last March, you can check it out here, here & here.

Jude (Blogette): Jude has a black obi belt that she used to tie together her two different prints! See….it’s not just us bloggers that mix our prints!!

For those of you who would consider an obi belt too wide, I found some skinny belts for your shopping pleasure!
