This Open Shoulder Trend is Perfect for Older Women

Quote of the day: “It’s not the face, but the expressions on it. It’s not the voice, but what you say. It’s not how you look in that body, but the things you do with it. You are beautiful.” Stephenie Meyer

Shoulders are having their day this summer. If you’ve been in the stores or perusing the magazines, you’ll have seen the off the shoulder shirts available. And as much as I love that style, I’m not a huge fan of strapless bras, so I’ve been gravitating toward the open shoulder trend instead. The open shoulder trend or cold shoulder shirts may not be quite as prominent as the off the shoulder shirts, but to me, they can be more functional.

Being able to  wear a regular bra is the key! I wrote an article for Margaret Manning’s Sixty + Me (see the article here) regarding some of the pros & cons of this trend. And I was surprised at many of the comments on Sixty + Me’s Facebook page that stated how many women didn’t like this look on women of any age. So tell me….do you think it’s silly or fun?

For this post series, I decided to do the three standard styling options of the casual, smart and dressy versions.

Jodie’s (50+) Outfit: So this is my Covered Perfectly shirt that I also wore styled casually when we first received our shirts. I did have to shorten mine so that when I wanted to leave it untucked it wasn’t a dress! But the company’s shirts are made for women over 40. I think what that means for this shirt, is that it’s relatively looser and the sleeves are 3/4 length. It was a tad chilly when we took these pictures so I threw on my white denim vest. I didn’t want to wear a jacket because then it would cover up the best part of the shirt.

This fabulous coral bracelet was a gift from Nancy from Split, Croatia when she vacationed on a river cruise just this year. I love that it goes with my new loafers so perfectly! Walking loafers were not something I was looking for, but I just loved the color and the price was right! I should’ve had these shoes for all of our trips taken in the last 10 years, but no, I buy them now that we’ve decided we’re not travelling as much!

Skirt: LOFT (similar here a tidge longer)~~Vest: Apt 9 (similar here but only in a L or XL)~~Top: Covered Perfectly c/o (here right now in black, white & violet)~~Shoes: Mercanti Fiorentini (similar here in red with a bow)~~Scarf: (similar here)~~Earrings: Stella & Dot (similar here)~~Bracelet: (similar here–hard to find a close match, but at least this one has more the nugget look)

Nancy’s (60+) Outfit: I bought this open shoulder shirt for Nancy because it was a crop top, thus I figured I wouldn’t need to shorten it. And I was right, it’s the perfect length!! It could still be a crop top if Nancy decided to wear a pair of low rise jeans. However, since she’s not planning that in the near future, we can be safe to say her mid drift will remain covered! See there are advantages to being short!!

I know many women would have stuck with the black & white theme for this outfit, but it’s summer, so I threw in a little orange to the mix with the shoes & jewelry!

Pants: H & M (similar here in small or medium)~~Top: Romwe (similar here in a tee material)~~Shoes: Franco Sarto (similar here in a heel)~~Necklaces: (similar here cheap enough to get two!)~~Earrings: (similar here)~~Bracelet: (similar here the small one in this set)~~Watch: (similar here definitely a deal!)

Charlotte’s (70+) Outfit: Mom’s sporting some different glasses. She was having the lenses changed in her other ones, and thus had to revert back to an older pair. But don’t you just love these? To me, they have a load of personality just like her!!

Which is what you want people to think when you’re wearing leopard sneakers, right? I wasn’t a huge fan of sneakers, until they started making them more interesting. Just like my silver glitter pair and a bunch of others I found “shopping” below.

Jeans: Lands End (similar here on sale in many colors)~~Top: Romwe (here under $10)~~Shoes: Mossimo-thrifted (similar here-ha, I threw this in to show you what a great deal mom got comparatively, but even these aren’t cheap )~~Scarf: (similar here)~~Earrings: (similar here-sorta)~~Bracelet: (similar here)

This open shoulder trend may not be your cup of tea, but there are certainly good points to it. There is more coverage than a standard tank top. If you like your arms covered, then you can have that yet still expose your shoulders.

I really appreciate any comments and discussions! Thanks for reading!
