Velvet for Any Ages: The Casual Version

If you haven’t noticed by now, I always love a good quote. I feel like they are a bundle of smarts in a small package—kinda like the 3 of us, ha ha!!

As the opposite of our last post, where we styled our velvet pieces for a dressy occasion; this time I wanted to see how they would work for a casual day.

Sometimes it’s hard to see the texture of a material in a photo, so if you can’t tell, the velvet item is my scarf, Nancy’s sleeveless top, and mom’s blazer.

Jodie’s (50’s) Outfit: Confession time: I had to purchase my velvet in order to participate in our series! I know I used to have quite a few velvet blazers, however, since retiring and losing some weight, they were all too big and so got purged when we moved!

Style & Fashion for women in their 50's, 60's & 70's.

I found this lovely scarf at The Paper Chandelier consignment shop in downtown, Littleton. This trick of wearing it under a belt is one of my favorites since it stays in place so much better this way.

My love of accessories is probably well known by now, so I added in a choker necklace & my butterfly earrings. You could say that I’ve overloaded on the doodads, but my rationale was that they were rather small and dainty and so didn’t detract from the outfit as much!

As for the rest of the outfit. The shirt is “borrowed” from my husband’s side of the closet. I just didn’t have any shirts that blended in as well. The vest was an impulse buy at Target recently. I had bought an utility jacket months ago and removed the sleeves to make this vest. The problem was I was never in love with the shape of it that much, so when I saw the Target vest, I just had to have it!

This outfit could be considered too fitted, so I compared the same vest with a different kind of look.

Nancy’s (60’s) Outfit: Nancy’s velvet top is sleeveless, and usually get layered under other items like it did in the first post! Therefore I wanted to try to showcase it to be front and center this time.

I had originally thought to style it over this dress (and a long sleeve shirt) for the dressy category, but since we changed our minds for that outfit, I had to punt! I know Nancy would never wear these boots with a dress normally, but I wanted to experiment since they were the same color!

This scarf was hand knit for Nancy by a friend of hers. I added it to the outfit to see if it gave the look a more whimsical air!

These boots were Nancy’s objective when she went on her shoe shopping expedition just recently. I just want it known, that I was not with her, so it’s not my fault that she got 5 new pairs of shoes!!

Charlotte’s (70’s) Outfit: For my mom’s casual outfit with her velvet blazer, I decided it would be a perfect time to show off her Jodie’s Touch of Style t-shirt. With my sincere thanks to Anne of Spygirl who sketched the 3 of us in caricature and place them on a t-shirt. Of course I had to buy a shirt for all 3 of us, which you’ll see later this year!

I have to admit, I always love a blazer as a topper. I think part of it is because of watching What Not to Wear for so many years. Stacy & Clinton were always touting the advantages of this item. And even though we are retired, I think a blazer can still be worn for many occasions! Like with a graphic t-shirt as shown, right?

The graphic t-shirt should take most of the glory in this outfit, but I still wanted to add in a necklace and earrings. The choker necklaces may be thought of as a “young” girl’s accessory, but here’s to being a rebel!!

I chose the print jeans for mom’s outfit because I thought that her denim ones would make the outfit too dark. But they might have been a safer bet, if you’re one that likes a little less pattern!
