Having a Recipe for Getting Dressed Casually

Quote of the day: “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” Maya Angelou

I hear many women say to me that they feel lost getting dressed at times. But really, putting your clothing on everyday is not much different than getting your food ready for the next meal. You just need a tried and true recipe for getting dressed for specific events!

One of my blogging friends, Rebecca, also sent over an example of her “recipe” outfit. Of course, much of what you wear will depend on the specific place you are going and what the weather has in store! But let’s say for this example, for this task that we are running errands in the springtime!

Rebecca of RYouReadyToOrganize: The idea of this concept for a blog post about a “recipe” was because of Rebecca.

She had shared an article with me about a box service of clothing, which spurred this idea in my head! Therefore, I asked her what her own recipe for an outfit would be for getting dressed in a casual manner! This is her example!

Using a recipe for getting dressed

Jodie’s (50+) Outfit: One of my considerations for my recipe for getting dressed is do I need to re-wear anything I’ve already worn that week?

I tend to wear my jeans & pants many times before I wash them, so I like to keep them out and re-wear them a couple of times. To prove my point, I just wore these same jeans in our travel post! I usually try to switch it up for blog photos, but I’d forgotten that I wore these pants for those pictures! But I guess it shows that I’m not lying!!

And on top of that, if I’m struggling on what to wear, I will focus on a neutral pant and then add color in the top portion. I feel like tan pants or jeans are definitely one of those basics that work on everyone. If you need another pair, these are under $20 if your size is still available, and don’t forget to check out the snake print version!!

Ageless style with a recipe in mind

And then you may laugh, but the next item I usually choose is my shoes!

My thought process includes whether or not I should wear heels or flats that day! And am I going to need to take them on and off at my friend’s house. This red pair has a zipper up the back which makes them easy to take on & off! And even though not all of the lace up flats have this detail, they are one of my favorite modern shoes lately!

I mean the variety that they come in just makes me want every pair. Like this velvet pair really caught my eye! Even though you think of velvet for the colder months—since it’s just on the outside of the shoe, you really could wear it tons! And then there are fabulous heels too, like these, yet with a block heel that make them walk able!!

How to pick out outfits

My next step in figuring out my outfit is the top portion.

I seem to have quite an extensive selection of tops, so I have to figure out what I want my focal point to be. Since this day was still cool outside, I chose my newest cardigan that I received in my thrift box! I think one of the reasons I love this cardigan so much is twofold. One is definitely the colors! Blush is such a huge “in” color right now! And two, the interesting sleeves make it stand out more! Yet these sleeves are not as big and crazy as many I’ve seen. I mean, who wants your sleeves getting in the way of shopping? LOL!

If you feel blush isn’t great with your complexion, then a cardigan might be a great way to incorporate the color into your outfit. Then you can have a different color beneath it and accessorize with colors that enhance your complexion! Even though it’s close to summer, some cardigans work for any season like this one or this one (although I might switch out the buttons on that last one)!

Fashion recipes

Of course, no outfit is complete without accessories in my recipe book!

In fact, I just bought these earrings on our latest trip to Target! Have you seen the fabulous jewelry they have lately?? Since I haven’t been dying my hair lately, I’ve been trying to focus on lighter earrings so they’ll stand out more! And then I decided to change my hair style….(that’s foreshadowing for the next post….)

But seriously about the jewelry at Target! No this isn’t a sponsored post; I was just so in love with so many of their pieces. I’m sure it’s because they teamed up with Bauble Bar which I’ve loved for a long time because of their modern & fun pieces! Like these earrings…don’t you think they’d go with so much? And don’t the tassels earrings and pompom earrings just make you smile!!

Nancy’s (60+) Outfit: When I told Nancy to come up with a recipe for getting dressed in a casual outfit, she said she’d start with her jeans!

And I wanted to jump up and down in joy when she grabbed her red jeans!! I know that when red jeans started making their way onto the fashion scene about 5 years ago, I could never imagine wearing them. I thought they were only for the younger girls! But I had a patient tell me that I should try it! So I bought a pair and haven’t looked back since.

Now you have to realize that Nancy isn’t always as fashion forward as other women. In fact, she laughs at herself, that she usually jumps on the bandwagon for a style just when the style is going out! So I was extremely impressed when she wanted a pair of red jeans! How about you? Do you have a pair??

Women 60+ and fashion

Even if red jeans seem too bright for your tastes, I do think it’s important to dip your toe into some of the newer trends every once in a while.

In fact, I wrote an article for Sixty + Me about wearing jeans no matter what your age! So I think you should experiment with all different kinds of jeans. For example, maybe you’d enjoy a blush pair or mint pair? And like I’ve shown with these items, you certainly don’t have to spend an arm and a leg on a pair of jeans!

Nancy wore these same red jeans over a year ago when we were showcasing colored jeans casually, dressy & for a smart look! At first, you may not think they’d go with much, but after having them awhile, you’ll realize they go with everything!

Getting Dressed Easily

Nancy’s next choice for this outfit was her lightweight sweater!

If you’re someone who likes a simpler recipe for your outfit then an easy shirt is essential. Right now, there are so many fun shirts available. If you’ve been scouring the stores, then you would have noticed the sleeve details on many shirts. Like this blouse here or you could enjoy a more cinched waist shirt!

Of course there are other details that could make your shirts sing! For instance the cross front shirts are very popular. Or maybe you just like a floral print for the warmer months?

Style & Fashion for Women over 60

Even though we were keeping it casual, Nancy is very used to grabbing a necklace to add some interest to her outfits!

I love the idea of having a fun pendant necklace if you’re wearing all solid colors! For those of you who love owls, then this one is perfect! Or I found this lovely floral pendant necklace that really stands out!

As for Nancy’s shoes, she went with her tried and true sneakers that look like oxfords! I basically twisted her arm to get these because she wasn’t sure about the oxford look. But they have been worth their weight in gold in the comfort and wear-ability factor. In fact, both my husband and I have these shoes only in different colors!

Charlotte’s (70+) Outfit: My mom’s recipe for getting dressed for running errands is not much different than mine!

Of course we joke that the reason behind that is because the nut doesn’t fall far from the tree! And considering how fashionable she is, I think that’s a good thing!

My mom actually reached for this cardigan sweater as her first choice! Stripes have been quite popular lately, and I found a couple of great deals for you. This striped cardigan is very bright and colorful and quite reasonable in price! But if you’d rather stick with less color, than this one is a linen blend for the summer!

Women over 70 & Fashion

Once she chose her sweater, then we looked for some neutral pants!

My mom doesn’t reach for her jeans as quickly as I do, so she chose these trousers that she had made many years ago!

But mom does have an abundance of shirts in her closet of every color, so we picked a color that was in her cardigan. I know that everyone can use another t-shirt, so here’s the deal of the day! You might need to get one in every color for that price!

Women 70+ and Outfits

The shoes are usually mom’s last thought for the recipe for her outfit.

Since we were styling for a casual errand day, I chose her red flats! I’m trying to get mom out of the habit of always matching everything. So I thought these would be fun!

Even if you’re just going to the store, I’m a huge lover of great shoes! For the summer, lemons seems to be taking over many clothing items, so I found them on these shoes! Or maybe you’re a giraffe fan? Even if you like your footwear a little more plain, these have just the right amount of pizzazz for your bubbling personality!

Recipes that work for dressing casually

And to finish off my mom’s outfit, we always reach for some necklace or earrings or both!

Notice that the earrings and necklace don’t match each other! This is not the usual for my mom, but again I’m trying to build her brain health by changing her habits. We worked with a brain coach in a couple of posts lately. The idea was to restyle our own items, figure out how to copy others yet still be us & how to use shopping to be good for our brain!

I know that having matching earrings for your necklaces is convenient. But especially since mom’s sweater has so many colors in it, it still looks great by switching them up! But if you happen to like your sets, then I found this set and this set that might be fun!

I am all over the place when it comes to choosing my outfit. If I pick the night before, chances are I dont like how it looks in the AM. Sometimes I look for something to match my nailpolish on my toes in the summer. I love shoes but dont have enough!!!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Well, it’s certainly easy to get you some more shoes—and I’m an expert at that (can you say shoe addiction??)!
      🙂

  • I love your red lace up shoes! Having a zip on the back makes them much easier to put on, and saves time! Nancy looks great in the red jeans. I have some skinny ones but haven’t worn them yet. I have some red trousers which I wear lots. You’re right – they are much more versatile than you first think. I love how your mom’s yellow necklace stands out against the mint top. Three fab outfits! Thanks for linking up 🙂

For those of us who love to shop and put together outfits—we would love to help you, Barbie!! I realize that not every person loves this aspect of daily life—so if ever i can help you, I am at your disposal!!
      🙂

  • I re-wear my jeans several times as well. I really, really need to find some other colored pants though but I have such a hard time finding a correct fit. And I’m such a lazy shopper. ha. I get tired of trying on clothes and give up too easily. 🙁 I love your outfit; I just need someone to go buy my clothes and dress me everyday. 🙂

    • Jodie Filogomo

It can be so discouraging, Lisa to find great fitting pants. Skirts are easier only because they have fewer fit points….but I know many women don’t wear skirts as much anymore.
If you lived in Denver—I’d be on your doorstep tomorrow!! It’s always better to shop with someone else!! And I love to do exactly that!! Heck, I’ve transformed Nancy (the 60+ model) into loving clothes and shopping. Because it’s way more fun the better you get at it!!
Have you ever looked into the Stitch Fix or like boxes?? I bought a thrift box a couple of months ago too through a woman who also blogs!! I can give you her info if you’re interested!!

  • I love that the finishing touches for your looks was to accessorize. Its like the sprinkles on top of a cake!

It’s so nice to have an outfit formula or recipe, especially for casual outfits. I love how you’ve all incorporated color into your outfits! I think it makes everything look more pulled together and fun!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Laura!!
I do love color, and luckily so does my mom!! My stepmom is so nice that she goes along with most anything!!

  • Great post! And I like that you’re all dressed in the same color palette. It makes the photos and post feel very cohesive. One of my favorite takeaways was your point about re-wearing something from earlier in the week. What a smart tip! I’m right there with you on wearing jeans or overpieces a couple of times before washing them, so repurposing a piece from earlier in the week for a casual outfit is such a good pointer.

I think I build my outfits more like Charlotte and start with an eye-catching piece I feel like wearing that day. From there, I can incorporate your tips of rewearing jeans and picking a fun shoe to finish the look. Thanks for the ideas!

  • Hey! Guess I need some red jeans! I have a quite a number of pairs of colored denim but in careful, quiet colors. I would love to find some red ones based on your recommendation. Always like to comment on whatever stuck with me from each of your outfits…so in review, YOUR shoes! I was thinking they were probably a nightmare of tangled laces to put on and take off but love that they have a zipper. Your red color is sold out, I guess. Boo! But will keep my eyes open for something similar.
Nancy’s necklace is just so whimsical and sweet. Followed your ‘similar’ link to the Betsy Johnson pendant and love it, too, but can’t afford it! Boo.
And Charlotte’s cardi is adorable. Love how the buttons match the stripes perfectly. My daughter has one similar and it is so versatile.
Having done the Get Your Pretty On style challenges with Alison Lumbatis, I have less trouble figuring out what to wear. But I think, sometimes, my recipe for dressing casually seems like leftovers cause I serve it up so often. Guess that’s where great accessories come in.

    • Jodie Filogomo

I do think red jeans are fabulous Leslie! Did I tell you that even my husband has a pair?
And there are some of these lace up shoes at Target (http://shopstyle.it/l/Ijw). they don’t have the zipper up the back, but for the price they might not be too bad to get on and off??
And I found a cheap necklace if you don’t mind patriotic: http://shopstyle.it/l/Ik8? I was thinking you could paint the hat portion with nail polish if you wanted it another color??
You cracked me up with your comment about leftovers—I just want to say that we eat leftovers every week–ha ha!!
      XOXO

      • We have leftovers on Thursdays and in our lunches. But sometimes I open my lunch bag and think…YUCK…AGAIN?

Love the pendant and the shoes. Ordering now the shoes now. Thank you so much. Will see if my Charming Chuck’s has the pendant in-store. XOXO

        • Jodie Filogomo

You crack me up Leslie!! I love food, but it can be time consuming to make new meals every day!! I cook basically the same lunches for every day during the week—luckily my husband doesn’t complain!!
          XOXO

  • Amy D. Christensen

Jodie, I really like your analogy for a recipe! What a great idea. All of your outfits are perfect casual looks. I love your neutral palette with the pop of color on your cardi and your jewelry. I adore Nancy’s red pants and love the contrast with the gray sweater and I love Mom’s red shoes! Perfect casual outfits for running errands or hanging out at home. – Amy

I love your cardigan and I call them outfit formulas. a lot of mine have to do with creating the long vertical line by adding third completer pieces or long necklaces.

  • Your posts are always so thought-provoking, Jodie. I never really thought about what my recipe for dressing casually was until now. I think I’m most like Nancy with centering around the jeans I will wear. And I love those red jeans! Ooooh and I have always had a soft spot for Target’s jewelry. • Jodie Filogomo

You’re so right that the temperature plays a huge part of my recipe too, Mary!! Although I hate to be limited if the weather is being fickle!! Some days it’s fun to layer…but other days I’m so over it!!

  • I think it depends on my mood and where I’m going. Sometimes it’s the top first and sometimes it’s the pants. But then if there is a pair of shoes I haven’t worn in a while, I will start with those and i can’t say that I haven’t started with a vintage bag for the go. I think I just march to my own beat. And I say YES to Nancy’s red jeans. I got a pair last summer and love them, but Michael isn’t too crazy about them which I don’t get. Well, with red being just a biggie on the runways this springs, we will be seeing a lot more of it that usual. And I have a pair of black Grasshoppers coming that looks just like you Mom’s red shoes-amazing!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I do think that mood comes into it, but I have to admit that I usually pick out my outfits the night before (that’s the crazy planner in me).
I had to twist my husband’s arm to get a pair of red jeans, and after that he seems more open to colors! Maybe Michael needs a pair to understand the draw?
      XOXO

  • Nancy looks marvelously casual in her red pants.

Mama’s been dead for 35 years and I still hear her in my mind talking about ‘old ladies wearing red’ so red comes hard to my wardrobe except for the red cardigans of my childhood. Times have changed, but what was that about the nut and the tree?

    Bottoms first, shoes last here.

    • Jodie Filogomo

I know, I know, Jean! Why is it so hard to forget those “lessons” we learned in our youth? Yet I can hardly remember what I learned yesterday?? Ha ha!!
But maybe it’s practice?? I’m trying so hard to put together my outfits like I normally do, and then see if I can change up one thing….just to get in the practice of changing my brain. Maybe not everyday, but every couple of days!! And it’s sorta fun—when I have the time!!
      XOXO

  • Judy Gramith

Usually I have an item that I want to “feature”; much like having an inspiration piece. It could be pants, shoes, a top or even a particular necklace or belt! I then build the outfit from there. At least 70% of the time it’s NOT the shoes so yes, they’re probably my last concern (yo! Charlotte!).
Jodie, your haircolor and complexion are perfect for blush and peachy hues. Your floral cardi is really pretty. Ever think of combining it with a narrow blush stripe t- shirt??
Nancy’s red jeans are awesome. Just a couple of years ago when colored jeans were hot I managed to acre quite a rainbow of colors at “cheap” prices! I even snapped up several brand new pairs at Goodwill/donated by Target. They were only $3.00!! Nancy looks GREAT in her red and grey. I think she needs to hunt for pink!!! (She always looks so pretty in pink)
Charlotte knows how to style herself so well that it’s tough to find fault with her wise taste. I LOVE the fact that she is so adventurous and doesn’t seem to hesitate when she knows a new trend will work for her! Her masterfull skills as a seamstress are surely part of her styling confidence. May I suggest a tiny floral print blouse or t-shirt in one or two ( or all) of the colors in her striped cardi? Love my Charlotte!

    • Jodie Filogomo

That’s a smart way to start Jude!! If I’ve gone shopping..then my “feature” piece is my newest item!! I always want to wear what I just bought to see how I’m going to wear it!! And many times it’s actually shoes since I have quite a problem with buying shoes…ha ha!!
I loved your suggestions for our outfits—the links that you sent!! You really have such a good eye for style & fashion!! Of course having a ton of time on your hands is a great reason to “shop”—that’s why we are such good friends!!
      XOXO

      • Judy Gramith

Oh Jodie, there is a lot more to why I like you and enjoy our friendship than just our common love of shopping.

        • Jodie Filogomo

Awww Jude! You are a bright star for sure!!
          XOXO

  • I really like the idea of having a fashion recipe to use when you are running behind or stuck on what to wear. I enjoyed seeing how each of you put your own spin on a go-to look. My recipe is similar to yours and Charlotte’s – I generally pick basics, add a completer piece, fun shoes (of course!) and then accessories. I like Nancy’s mix of a bright jean and neutral, too.

I know when I was working, I’d wear the same trousers all week and just change out my shirts & jackets!! No one really notices your pants anyways unless they are a crazy print, right? Besides, I figured I rarely saw the same patients in the same week, and my employees were used to it!!!
I still get stuck in ruts now though!! My mom was commenting that I always wear a pair of skinny jeans & top when I come over to take her photos. So in order to switch things up the other day, I wore a skirt—-and flashed her many times—ha ha!! Maybe that’s why the skinnies are good???
      XOXO

  • Juhli Newkirk

I really appreciate how you have shown truly great casual outfits that can work for many occasions yet are quite stylish!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks so much for this positive comment Juhli!! I know society has gotten progressively more casual, but I keep telling my mom that she has some great clothes, so she might as well wear them, right? Isn’t that true of all of us???
      🙂
Happy Monday and thanks so much for your voice today!!

  • Love these different approaches to getting a casual look together. My trick is always adding a pendant necklace. Instant polish. I adore all three looks!

I think you are so right Kathrine!! Especially the longer necklaces!! I love that I can finally wear them now that I’m retired because they look so perfect with solid colored shirts!!
      OXXO

  • Casual style is definitely a bit trick to pull off. You want to look comfy without being too drab!

Exactly, Jess!! That’s why I probably overdo it with the accessories…ha ha!!
      🙂

  • With me it very much depends on what mood I’m in. I love the colours that you are wearing. How many times a week do you make the pictures, and do you all live near each other?

    • Jodie Filogomo

It’s so true that mood can make a difference, however, I usually pick out my outfits the night before—so hopefully I’m in the same mood!
My mom & Nancy all live within 10 minutes of me! We have a schedule where I go to mom’s house every other week to take 2 weeks of photos, and then the next week I go to Nancy’s house to take the same post’s photos. The nice thing lately, is we can reschedule if it’s bad weather!!

  • Mother Daughter

I usually know which shoes I want to wear and build from there. Of course depending on my mood and a pair of pants that don’t fit the way I thought they would can change the whole process.lol

    • Jodie Filogomo

I love starting with shoes at times too—especially if we’re walking all day or on vacation!!
And I have to admit, that there are times I end up changing items around a few times!! Heck–just yesterday, I ended up altering a pair of pants because I’d been wearing them for way too long with an terrible fit!!!

  • Tina von tinaspinkfriday

Great post and outfits Jodie 🙂
In my mind casual is always a pant. Jeans or chino and sneakers.
I wish you a nice week, Tina

    • Jodie Filogomo

I’m the same way, Tina!! Although lately I’ve been trying to wear skirts & dresses more—we’ll see if it sticks!!
      XOXO

  • Bev @ Walking Well With God

    Jodie,
I hadn’t thought about mixing it up as to how I choose and outfit. I guess I’m like your mom – that I choose my shoes last after everything else has been put together, but what if I chose them earlier in the process? This was a great reminder that we can start with any piece (red jeans, striped cardigan, red shoes) and then go from there. Always love your creative ideas and reminder that’s there’s more than one way to put a recipe together.
    Blessings,
    Bev xx

    • Jodie Filogomo

You’re exactly right Bev!! There are definitely more than one way to put our outfit recipes together! I know I get into clothing ruts and start doing the same thing over and over at times!! In fact, my mom just made a comment the other day, that I always wear my skinny jeans & a top when I come over to take photos for her!! So for the next time, I wore a skirt—-and I flashed her from time to time–ha ha! I guess that’s the reason why I wear my jeans for some occasions! LOL!!

  • Queen of Rods

My recipe usually starts with finding pants that will fit well on a given day. Being of short stature, any weight fluctuation throws things off. On a slender day, I like to start with a handbag and build around that 🙂

    • Jodie Filogomo

What a great thought, Janet—starting with your handbag!! That’s usually the last thing I grab, but at least I’ve been switching my purses up lately and trying to have them complement the outfit!! Do you have a ton of bags??
      XOXO

      • Queen of Rods

I do have a large collection of bags and I love every one of them. It’s a challenge to make sure that they all get used. The nice thing about handbags is that one size fits all 🙂 BTW, I love all three outfits today.

        • Charlotte Miller

I too have quite a collection of handbags–An antique cedar chest is full of purses and then there’s the small moving box of evening bags. Several I have made and many made by a friend. Styles of them keep changing and returning.

          • Queen of Rods

Yay! I ‘m glad that I’m not the only one. I agree that styles keep coming and going, but at this point in life, I just want to wear what I like to wear, and I don’t worry much about the trends. I’m a big fan of color, so a bright colored bag is often the beginning of the outfit for the day. I always enjoy seeing your jewelry and shoes and colored clothing, and I admire your sewing skills 🙂 I wish that we lived closer together so that we could share stories and ideas…

        • Jodie Filogomo

          LOL!!
          🙂

  • Cathy Lawdanski

I love Rebecca’s look in this post! She looks fabulous! And Nancy’s red jeans, of course!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Doesn’t Rebecca look great?
      XOXO

      • Rebecca Phillips

Thanks ladies. The article is fantastic Jodie. So happy with it. I love coral!
