Shirt Dress for the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s: Under a Skirt
Quote of the day: “Don’t retouch my wrinkles in the photograph, I would not want it to be thought that I had lived for all these years without having anything to show for it.” The Queen
Once I get an idea in my head, then my creative juices go wild. Or many of you might think “the woman has gone crazy.” And it’s probably true. But I was thinking about when we wore a longer skirt over a dress (see the post here) so your dress actually looked like a top! And I thought why not wear a skirt over your shirt dress but let the hem hang out—almost like a lace extender in a dress version. (Did you see the lace extender posts? The last one was here). This concept could be too far outside the norm for your comfort, but if you like uniqueness, it might be for you! Besides, we layer tops without a second thought, why not bottoms? Just think of it as another way to wear a skirt that may be much too short by itself (this could also work with a non shirt dress)! The first idea of trying different approaches to the shirt dress was as a duster (here—and you can also see the links to when we wore the dress “normally”).
50’s Outfit: Since my dress is relatively short to begin with, I found a skirt that unzips up the sides. It may look kooky, but I actually like this version because the shirt dress tends to open in the front, especially when you sit down—so this skirt covers that area (or you could say it makes it more modest)!
60’s Outfit: Since Nancy is short waisted and doesn’t love having her tops “tucked” in, I had her throw on a vest too! Having this additional layer was also helpful since we were surprised by a spring snowstorm in April when we took this pix!
70’s Outfit: In order for mom to have a skirt short enough to do this, I had her roll up the waistband a couple times. Adding a belt on top of the rolled up waistband, holds it all in place!
