The Winter Tunic for the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s: The Casual Version

Tunics for winter for the 50's, 60's, & 70's age groups.

Quote of the day: “Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.”  Lao Tzu

Since the last time I showed the three of us in tunics (the series started here) was in the summer months, I thought I’d now try styling tunics with cold weather in mind! And there was a time I styled winter tunics under the category of leggings (here) last year. Tunics are the perfect pairing with your leggings, so that’s the common denominator with these outfits. Of course the natural progression is to then add your boots, so instead of us all being totally alike, I tried a couple other shoe options for Nancy and I.

50’s Tunic: I actually wore this outfit just the other day, but switched out the sneakers for my grey ankle boots! I do love my hounds tooth sneakers, but sometimes I feel like a teeny bopper in them.

60’s Tunic: You don’t actually see the tunic much here since I layered a long cardigan over it. You’ll see it more in the next two posts.

70’s Tunic: This sweater is excellent for hiding multiple layers under it. You could add 2 or 3 different shirts under it and no one would ever know!

Love tunics. Will never stop wearing them nor will I stop wearing skinny jeans or anything else I like, for that matter. I have pashminas in many colors and continue to love how they look. I’ve worn brooches for ever and have a boatload of them. Huge thumbs up for Jodie’s sneakers. I love my patterned sneakers.

    • Jodie Filogomo

It’s so nice to find certain styles & items that work for you—no matter what the “trends” say!!
      Thanks for the love, Kathleen!

  • I love tunics. They rock my world!
You are so cute in your sneakers.
Thanks for linking with the PURPLE 52 Pick-me-up. I see two purple scarves up there!

I just read an article in our Denver newspaper about skinny jeans and how they won’t be leaving the fashion world very soon. So I was talking with my husband about it and saying…I feel like because so many women love the tunics, that the skinny jean has such a perfect place in society (along with leggings)—-it’ll be interesting if it changes! I feel like now that I’ve “discovered” them, there will always be a time or place I’m going to wear them (especially with sneakers)!!

    • Link up your light purple one too!

  • This post is making me think that I need to get more into tunics! All of these are really beautiful and they look versatile too!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Well, truth is this is my only winter tunic…maybe I’ll need to get more too!!

  • I dont have many tunics, but I do love the look over skinny jeans, leggings like you have shown here. I think the sneakers are super cute. I had some converse I used to wear, but at the time they didnt give me enough support. All of the jewelry is very pretty, love your burnt orange earrings.

Thanks for linking up with Turning heads tuesday!

This is actually my only tunic (at least right now). I’m liking them more and more, so that could be a rationale to do more shopping (like I really need a reason)–ha ha. I totally know what you mean about the lack of support in the sneakers—but luckily my orthodics fit in them just fine! Thanks for the nice words of support!

  • Bernadette Laganella

Been living in tunics this winter but haven’t tried the sneakers – definitely will try now thanks to you. It seems like a good option as we move into spring.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Might as well try it, right? Thanks for reading!!

  • Versatilestylebytracey

Love all the earrings! I steered clear of those style sneakers as a poll from my kids all yielded a resounding no! First time they all were so emphatic. Tunics are such wonderful tops!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Hmmm….and I thought the sneakers would be a great casual and comfy shoe. I have worn them with my jeans and didn’t feel quite as silly!!

  • I like the frosty palette with the purple, white, and gray, which surprises me because I was just complaining about being sick of having to dress for winter. lol I’m ready for spring! This fall I started pairing my tunic tops with ponte knit pants and knit jeggings in addition to regular leggings. It made me feel like I had way more combinations to work with!

Well the reason you’re ready for spring is because of all those beautiful caftans you got!!! I really only have this one tunic (and it’s new) so we’ll see if I need more options with it. I could probably wear skinny jeans too? Or is that a no-no (I ask you because you’re the younger generation!!!)?

  • Maria Jørgensen

I love the blue silver ear rings worn by the 70 year old woman. They remind me of both Georg Jensen and Pandora both are Danish firms

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Maria!

  • Amy D. Christensen

I am new to the tunic world and I love them. I’m learning from my daughter that a dress can qualify as a tunic as you saw in my fashion post from last week…the leopard print…I also have very bad veins, so leggings and tunics are my new friends. Thanks for posting. Creative and beautiful!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I’m actually new to tunics also—before blogging, I never considered them! Thanks for your input!! And FYI…I just read in the Wall Street Journal that they’re working on a new way to get rid of those veins without surgery…so maybe soon, you won’t need the leggings!!

  • RedTagChicLA

Love the 70s vibe of your tunic – I am a huge fan of tunics too! Have a FAB week!

Definitely the advantage of tunic….layer, layer & more layers!!

  • Terri Webster Schrandt

Very cute, I live in tunics all year long!

    • Jodie Filogomo

They can be quite versatile !! Thanks for chiming in Terri!!

  • Tunics, leggings and boots are definitely the classic, though I love that you mixed it up with sneakers.

Thanks Lydia! My husband’s comment was I looked too young—I didn’t realize that was a bad thing?

  • There is nothing wrong with feeling like a teeny bopper! This ancient blogger will take that feeling any day! Hahaha

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Well…you have a point!

  • Gosh, I love a tunic Jodie….especially on a “housework” day.
Easy to wear, comfortable, warm and covers my bum!
    Somedays are definite tunic days!
The knitted version would be my first choice, as you say…layers can be piled underneath. :oD

You know…I never had a tunic in my arsenal until I started blogging. I think I considered them unserious!! Funny, huh?

  • Laura

Tunics are so nice and cozy for cooler weather! You all look amazing!

      Thanks Laura!
