Tweed for the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s: Making Tweed Ladylike

Quote of the day: “Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness.  It is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose” – Helen Keller

These colder months are made for tweed with the heavier material, the mixing of textures, and the interesting color it creates. But tweed, and especially the tweed jacket can be thought of as professorish or stuffy. And, of course, there in lies a challenge. This challenge was dreamed up by the other mother/daughter bloggers-Sheela & Eve that we’ve collaborated with many times before–see those partnerships here, here & here.

The three of us older women have taken these exact same jackets and styled them in February of 2016, here, here & here. I always say, that having an item in your closet that can be versatile, is a success in my mind!

Now this group of posts is all about dichotomy of fashion. The yin & yang to make a style more fun. Thus the sober and intellectual tweed got it’s first challenge to be styled ladylike. Let’s see if it’s how you would have interpreted this category? Tell me in the comments how you would do it!! And make sure to click over to Sheela & Eve’s blogs to see different details—there can be a load of small details that get missed in just one photo!

Eve of the World According to Eve: Pink, floral & a dress. These are definitely my thoughts when it comes to ladylike details! Eve & I must have been on the same wavelength when we chose our dresses for this category! See, style can transcend age!

Sheela of Sheela Writes: Sheela’s tweed jacket is a much subtler tweed, and it’s got a fabulous fur collar. She added her lacey shirt under it and an amazing statement necklace! Doesn’t the necklace remind you of my necklace from our Animal Print in your Accessories post?

Jodie’s (50’s) Outfit: When I think ladylike, I automatically think of a dress. But then I also had to consider the colors in my jacket. So I pulled this flower, slip dress from the back recesses of my wardrobe. It was handed down to me when my dear friend passed away (see the story here).

I’ve really only worn the dress once or twice because it’s a slip dress and I’ve never been too enamored with that style. But they are gaining in  popularity, so maybe I’ll figure out how to style it better. But I thought the colors went nicely with my tweed jacket?

In keeping with the feminine theme, I grabbed a Victorian style necklace and simple earrings and a bracelet.

The only reason I added the scarf was to detract somewhat from the tweed being so prominent. Maybe it was unneeded? I also put on my reddest lipstick and pointiest pumps! Hear me roar!

Nancy’s (60’s) Outfit: Another detail that I consider quite feminine is ruffles and laciness. That’s the reason for putting Nancy in her beige skirt along with the lace extender.

I was trying to be creative and artistic with the necklace by turning it around backwards. Needless to say it looks a little wonky this way.

I love the lace extender with this skirt. To me, it almost looks like it’s part of the skirt and mirrors the ruffles & detailing that is at the hemline.

The reason I added the burgundy boots was to pull in the burgundy from the velvet tank top that is under Nancy’s jacket. However, you really don’t notice the tank top and I think the boots are almost too dark? Any suggestions on what would make it better?

Charlotte’s (70’s) Outfit: For mom’s take on making her tweed jacket ladylike, I thought I’d give some variety  by styling her with pants instead of a skirt or dress. So I grabbed the newest acquisition to her closet with these pastel colored trousers.

I had mom put on her lace shirt under the tweed and then we went crazy with the pearls! My mom thought the brooch might be too much with everything else, but I kinda liked it. What do you think?

The pearl neck tie was handed down to mom from her step mom over 20 years ago. Now having pearls and a necktie be together is a true example of dichotomy in a clothing item, huh?

We kept the shoes light in color by going with her gold ballet flats! It was actually quite warm this day, so she didn’t even need hose or socks to keep her feet warm!
