A Vest & Fun Shirt for My Husband

Quote of the day: “People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing.” Dale Canregie

Maybe you think that fun shirts aren’t appropriate for men over a certain age? But when we found this shirt with converse sneakers on it over 5 years ago, I knew Rob needed it. Not because he has a pair of converse sneakers. And not because he even likes the shoes that much! But because it’s whimsical and fun! And who doesn’t need a little fun in their lives?

When I met my husband around 14 years ago, he had nothing like this outfit in his closet. His wardrobe consisted of tan pants and those boring, small print work shirts. Not that that fact stopped me from loving him and marrying him, but I just love the fact that he is way more adventuresome in his wardrobe choices now! Of course, there’s an occasional nudge from me at times, but he’s grown exponentially in his style!

Rob’s Outfit: Take this vest for example. Back when we were working at my dental office, we’d visit this men’s boutique when we were done with our hair appointments. The sales associate suggested this vest to Rob, and he decided to try it!

It’s been one of Rob’s go-to vest choices ever since. Even though the weather is warming up during the day, most mornings tend to be chilly, and so Rob will throw on his vest for a little warmth! Now I’m not sure all men love vests, but in case you know one who does, this reversible one is a great choice! Of course, if you love a fantastic deal as much as I do, then you have to check out this one!

But it’s the shirt that gets me every time he wears it. Having little converse sneakers strewn across a manly shirt just cracks me up!!

Now you know there is no way I’ll be able to find a shirt like this. But let’s say how surprised I am at what I did find on my shopping site. Maybe someone living in Maine would love this one? Or a diving enthusiast could deep down be hoping you’ll buy them this shirt? I’m not even sure that Rob would be open to wearing this one, but really these prints seem more manly than flowers, right?

And it’s only this year that we bought Rob these grey jeans!! It seems like such a obvious choice for a color of jeans for guys! A little more variety than just denim or black, but not as crazy as the mint green ones that Rob wore, here!

Sometimes I think guy’s fashion has to start with the women’s fashion. We’ve been showcasing grey a ton in the last couple of years, so it’s high time that the guys started wearing it too! Grey jeans are a dime a dozen—okay, so not maybe that available. But I found many pairs under $100, like these and these. I’d say that last pair are Rob’s jeans except his look darker than what they are showing on the Gap’s website right now.

And I can’t forget Rob’s footwear! He wore his boots this particular day because it was still somewhat cooler, but I know many guys have put their boots away for the season. Therefore let me introduce you to some charcoal colored sneakers, here or a pair of normal shoes, here!

So the verdict is out and waiting for your thoughts! Are fun shirts something you like to see on men in this age group? And heck, if your man has one, would you “borrow” it?

Print shirts never really go out of style, do they?

  • I’m going to have to get my husband to branch out into more adventuresome prints. I love this shirt!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Of course he should branch out!! He needs to keep up with you, right, Molly??
      🙂

My hubs loves his vest too so there’s that. And I don’t believe in age appropriateness anyway so a fun shirt is always a good idea. It’s not about the age but whether you feel comfortable in what you wear and if it suits your type. I think the shirt looks great on Rob. Kirsten

      Thanks Kirsten!!

  • Go Rob!

My son would enjoy that sneaker shirt! He loves to toss in a campy print every once in a while. His favorite is similar to the one in your link: Lobsters. (His shirt–from Old Navy–has them oversized and red and he loves to wear it to summer picnics 🙂

    • Jodie Filogomo

That’s so fun Em!! It’s nice to hear that not all males despise fun clothing—no matter what their age!!
      XOXO

  • PetiteOver40

Whimsical shirts for men of any age are so fun. It is definitely a way for Rob to showcase his fun personality from inside out! And as you said, vests are both practical and stylish. They make so much sense AND you can have a lot of fun styling them.

Now if only I could convince my hubby to pose for me I would join you on this fun series you do with Rob! You know I’m a huge cheerleader for this kind of post. Bring the men in and help them feel welcome in our world, I say! Rob looks totally comfortable and it makes me admire him all the more for joining us in something we’re all so passionate about.

    Hugs all around!

It would be so fun to showcase more men—so if Michael ever feels up to it—you just holler!!
Rob is certainly feeling a little more comfortable doing this, because it is sorta fun. The truth is I usually bribe him with food or ice cream too!! 🙂

  • Queen of Rods

Ah…the vest. I can barely peel it off my male long enough to wash it 🙂 Nice post Jodie, I especially enjoy the “man posts.”

    • Jodie Filogomo

Really?? That’s fabulous, Janet. It’s nice to hear about other men wearing more than just t-shirts!!!
      XOXO

  • What an awesome vest! He sure does know how to pose too! Great shots! =)

Thanks Cielo!! He still doesn’t love it when we take his photos, but he’s such a good sport when I twist his arm!!

  • Jacqueline Rendine

I love vests! My husband was just talking about one the other day! This is a great look!

I’ve always loved vests on guys especially!! Maybe because you don’t see them that often??
      Thanks for chiming in Jacqueline!!

  • Charlotte Miller

WOW. Rob’s getting to be like your Grandpa Nagy–considered to be a NAPPY Dresser. Plus on the mind bender on the radio the other day the answer to what one thing made a person more attractive was wearing sun-glasses!!! SO THERE.

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Doesn’t he look nice?? 🙂

  • My husband was just telling me how he wanted to invest in some vests while we’re in the US in a few weeks. I’ll have to show him that reversible one. (He is all about reversible clothing!) And oh my gosh, that Converse shirt is so fun! I’m really enjoying your husband’s outfit posts – gives me some good ideas for my hubby. 🙂

      Thanks Lindsey!!
I can see why reversible clothing is an advantage—the packing is easier, right?
I almost bought reversible jeans once, but never pulled the trigger!! I may one of these days, though….

  • Judy Gramith

Any subtle nod to whimsy and humor is very appealing in men’s clothing. Fun prints and bright color are seen often in men’s golf wear but many men are reluctant to wear them “day to day.” A print like the one in Rob’s shirt wouldn’t even be noticed by many casual observers yet can evoke a positive impression for those who do. Men who have some fashion savvy reveal personality, sense of humor and self confidence. What’s not to love?

    • Jodie Filogomo

      I think so too, Jude!!
Why can’t men have fun with their clothing just like we do? Right?
      🙂

  • I think it is great that your husband has the personality to wear this. I can see some men not wanting to wear it. It looks good on him and in’t over the top. The print is subtle and doesn’t have crazy colors to match.

You’re exactly right, Amy—that’s probably how I got him to even consider it! Although he is much more adventuresome lately!!
Happy Easter and thanks for chiming in!!

  • donnanance

What a fun shirt! Rob always looks great. It’s a good thing you came along and helped revamp his wardrobe…ha! Have a wonderful weekend.

    • Jodie Filogomo

That’s exactly what Rob says all the time. Seriously—we laugh at when I met him, he only had tan pants!!
Happy Easter and thanks for all of the love!!

  • I like print shirts like this and have managed to get John wearing them, along with pink and lilac, two colors that suit him but he never wore until he met me. I’ll show him the pics of Rob and see if he will pose for me!
    Gail

    • Jodie Filogomo

He should absolutely be a model for you Gail!! We need tons more men showing that it’s okay to look great!!
      🙂
