Wearing Accessories is Fun with Prints

Quote of the day: “Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it.” Dennis P. Kimbro

Growing up with a mother who loves her clothing and accessories, I have to admit that it’s never been an option for me about wearing accessories. Of course I would add earrings and a necklace at the minimum to every outfit that I wear! But I know many women aren’t in this habit, or don’t take the time to include these goodies!!

So with the suggestion from a reader, Clare, about wearing accessories, I decided to do a comparison showing with and without accessories with the same item of clothing. The experiment started with solid clothing. and now I thought I’d show us with print clothes. In fact, I tried to use 3 different concepts in this experiment. I tried accessorizing with a different color than the clothing, the same color of the clothes and neutral metals as the bling!

I’m not here to say that one way is right or wrong. In fact, if you are one of those women that don’t love accessories, then I think that  wearing prints can camouflage that you are not wearing accessories!! But make sure to check out the comparisons because even our 80+ blogette  joined us below!

Jodie’s (50+) Outfit: For my comparison of wearing accessories or not, I wanted to wear my dress that I recently got from VIPme!

Comparing wearing accessories for Women 50+

You can see the dress below without any extras!! It’s a beautiful jacquard material, so I’m sure many of you would argue that it could stand by itself and still make a statement.

wearing accessories challenge

I know the first time I wore this dress, I kept the accessories and shoes neutral. But for this outing, I wanted to see how it would look by incorporating a totally different color into the mix.

This is where I think that using accessories can be almost magic. They can allow you to not just focus on the print, but also other items!!

woman over 50 wearing accessories with print

The reason all of us are wearing some kind of covering is because we were going to dinner at Perry’s for Father’s Day! This beautiful mint wrap is from Shelbee’s Shoppe, one of the bloggers I am lucky enough to call one of my friends!

I do think that turquoise jewelry is so versatile in adding another color to your outfit. I know many times we always try to match our accessories, but by doing that, they don’t stand out as much!

For example, if I wore a burgundy necklace with this dress, you’d never see it against the pattern! But the turquoise one stands out so lovely, doesn’t it? And it doesn’t have to be a turquoise stone necklace to make an impact. Since tassels are quite popular right now, this one would be fun too! Or you could choose many smaller stones in your necklace or even have turquoise glass beads instead!

Nancy’s (60+) Outfit: With Nancy’s outfit, I wanted to think about matching the accessories to the colors in her outfit.

Wearing Accessories Challenge

First we started out with a basic outfit that many of us recreate often. Black dressy pants and a print top!!

Women over 60 wearing accessories

Since we were going out to celebrate, Nancy put on her cluster pearl necklace! I love wearing our pearls more than just for super fancy times lately.

I think there are some very modern versions of pearls that make them easier to wear for everyday. Like this necklace, this one or this one seem less classic so you could wear them more often!

Wearing accessories with prints

Nancy’s top is one of those that I could imagine many women wouldn’t feel the need to accessorize with because of all of the print and detailing. I could see the same thing with this top or this top. If you don’t love taking the time to add in more bling, then print tops are probably the way to go!

Nancy’s topper is a longer cardigan she received from VIPme and has loved wearing it many times!!

Charlotte’s (70+) Outfit: My mom chose one of her newer dresses also! This one was gifted to her from VIPme this spring! Her choice of accessories were metal ones that I would consider neutral, since they’d go with any color or print.

wearing accessories comparison

I think it’s another example of how there are many details on the dress, and therefore maybe there isn’t the need for a lot of extras.

There are the buttons, the sheer sleeves, and then the print at the bottom portion of this dress.

wearing accessories women 70+

But as an accessory maximalist, my mom feels naked without some kind of earrings, bracelet, necklace or the like!!

If you like the idea of having accessories that aren’t a certain color, than silver seems to work for everyone! The nice part is there are many different varieties like this floral one or you could choose a bigger, tassel one!

Women over 70 comparing wearing accessories

As for the purse, you’ll laugh at this one! My mom’s silver purse is actually one of those cosmetic bags. She added a long beaded necklace under the flap to make it have a strap!!

I do think that a silver purse can be quite versatile, especially for dressier occasions! For example, here is a fabulous deal on a small clutch, or if you wanted a fancier one, this is pretty! Of course, the silver bags don’t have to be for dress up only, as shown by this bag or this one!

Clara’s (Blogette at 80+) Outfit: The blue of Clara’s necklace ties into the floral shirt so perfectly!!

I also love that Clara grabbed a neutral, metallic purse for her outfit!

Wearing accessories with print tops or dresses doesn’t have to be considered too much! Many of these below would look fabulous with a totally different color necklace! What do you think?

  • Amy D. Christensen

I love this Jodie. You know I love accessories. The more things we can wear at one time the better, I say. More bang for your buck, so to speak. All of these were great without the accessories, but adding those touches just upped it a notch! I love the turquoise against your dress. So pretty! Great ideas and I think you have helped to inspire many women to think outside that box. – Amy
    http://stylingrannymama.com/

  • Nice to see the comparison. I’m terrible for not getting round to thinking of accessories!

    • It’s all just a habit!! I am so much better at it now that I put my jewelry box right by my purse, so when I go to grab my purse to leave —I see it and grab something!!
      XOXO

  • Your mom is so clever. I love that she created a purse out of a cosmetics bag.

  • Christina Amore

I love your dress and I love how you mixed in the different colored accessories. So creative!

  • sue

I love so many things about this post Jodie. Firstly, your dress is fabulous and as always you all look gorgeous. Love the necklaces and I do think they make a difference to lifting the outfit. Also love the across the shoulder bag. I’m going to do an audit on my accessories today. Thanks!

    • I wear my accessories as a habit all the time, so it always makes me wonder if it even makes a difference?? Sometimes it is obvious, but there are times I see women’s outfits and don’t notice there extras at all!! Not that it’s bad—just interesting!!
      Thanks Sue!!
      XOXO

  • These women all have an inner glow that comes from knowing they look great!

  • While all of these looks are stand-alone lovely, the accessories take them to an even lovelier place. Oh, Jodie, your dress. Your dress!! I want to twirl in it. And that divine mint wrap. So featherlight and pretty.
Hugs to all four of you. These outfits are some of my favs.

    • It is such a twirly dress, Leslie!! At first I wasn’t sure about it because it’s so voluminous but I decided why not??
      Thanks, thanks & more thanks!!!
      XOXO

  • Laura

Print or solid color, I think accessories can make such a difference with an outfit and really help to mix it up! I feel like accessories complete an outfit as you’ve shown here!

    • I really feel the same way, Laura!! But it’s amazing to me how many women I see around town, who don’t accessorize!!
      XOXO

  • Accessories really make the outfits complete! All of these are so lovely! I love your dress!

    Jill
    Doused In Pink

    • Thanks Jill!!
I admit that I’m more of a maximalist when it comes to all of the extras!!
      XOXO

  • sabine ingerl

All your outfits are rounded up perfectly with the accessories. Without these are lovely looks, with your well choosen accessories the looks are more spectacular.

    Sabine

  • Oh Jodie your dress is gorgeous! I love your mom’s outfit too…that covering is just beautiful.

    • Thanks so much Amy!!
I’ll tell mom, and she’ll be so happy to hear your kind words!!
      XOXO

  • Love your dress – and that last pic of the 3 of you is a winner 🙂

  • Accessories do make the outfit. Your accessories are so well incorporated into your looks!

    Jessica | notjessfashion.com

  • Your dress is gorgeous! With or without accessories. #teamlovinlife

  • Accessories add to an outfit. However, I’d say in these proposals, because of the prints, you can go with or without and still look stylish.

    • It’s true, the size and busyness of the prints could make a difference–great point, Carmen!!
      Thanks!

  • I think every outfit needs an accessory, or two, or three… I feel naked if I forget to put on rings or a bracelet!
    http://www.iamchiconthecheap.com/

    • You are so like me, Lydia!! Although I rarely add in a ring…I need to start doing that ASAP!!
      XOXO

  • I always appreciate how you break things down to the basics. I’m not intimidated by accessories, and I wear them all the ways you illustrated in this post. But I’d never really considered how women who ARE intimidated by accessories might need some guidance to help them experiment with different strategies like adding a bold contrasting color, matching to your clothes, and rounding out your look with neutrals. You always share such inspired styling ideas!

    • Thanks for saying this, Liz!!
It’s always amazing to me the amount of women I see out and about with a great outfit, but no extras!! I do think some women just aren’t in the habit?? But to me it’s such a no-brainer!!

Do you know what Jodie, all these outfits look super, but the ones with accessories added just take the win for me. I love wearing accessories, and do so with most outfits! Jacqui

I like all outfits better with the necklaces! I love your dress and that statement necklace!

  • Missy May

Oh loving the dress on you Jodie. Omg the fit is amazing and its so bold and beautiful. The ladies all look gorg! When it comes to accessorizing prints, personally I think its depends on what print and how vibrant it is. I accessorize it according to the above rule. If it’s a loud print, I tend to gear towards just statement earrings, bag and leave out necklace. Seems to work for me. Ha!

    http://missymayification.blogspot.co.uk

    • Thanks Missy!! I’ve been trying to show more restraint lately with some of my accessories—but they are so fun!!
      XOXO

  • What a great post! I so enjoyed seeing your looks with and without accessories! Definitely think the looks your mom and Nancy are wearing needed the boost from their accessories. Your gorgeous dress, however, could really be styled both ways – with or without. You look smashing either way! Me, I’m a minimalist, but lately I’ve been trying to push myself to be a bit more adventurous. Thanks for sharing your insights!

    xxMary
    http://marymurnane.com

    • Thanks so much Mary!!
It’s funny you say that about being a minimalist and trying to push yourself, because I’m exactly the opposite. I’m a maximalist and I’ve been trying to restrain myself at times!!
      XOXO

  • I love this! I used to not wear accessories with prints, but now I feel “naked” without accessories. You showed really well that all the outfits are improved with accessories. I think often we get used to wearing a certain outfit one way and then stick with it. I love that you are always experimenting and exploring!

    • Sometimes, I’ll try to figure out how I can have a solution for the women I see walking around. Denver is quite casual, and even at church, many women wear t-shirts and jeans. I always want to “fix” their outfits by adding in some bling and extras!!
      Thanks Andrea!!
      XOXO

  • Carrie @ Curly Crafty Mom

Y’all seriously always come up with the best ideas for posts. I would have to say all of these outfits look better with the accessories! Although, it has been SO hot here in STL that I have been wearing less and less accessories and I miss them! lol!

    Carrie
    curlycraftymom.com

    • It does make it so much harder to put the extras on when it’s crazy hot outside!! That’s when I’m all about those shirts that have fun embellishments already on them…ha ha!!!
      Thanks Carrie!!
      XOXO

  • Kathy Marris

Wow what a difference accessories make! I’ve always accessorised my outfits. I think this is probably something that women my age do well. Your dress is gorgeous and so are Nancy’s shoes. I really do such a great job with these posts. #TeamLovinLife

    • I always accessorize too, Kathy, but I know so many women who don’t. Of course, Denver, is quite casual—but to me it’s such an easy way to add fun to an outfit!!
      Thanks for the love!!
      XOXO

  • Cathy Lawdanski

Love all of your outfits. Favorites – your shoes! Nancy’s top & her shoes – I can see myself in that top. And of course your Mom is so gorgeous in that color. And I’m trying accessories in contrasting colors!!! You are influencing my style choices!

    • I love to hear you say your trying to accessorize in contrasting colors!! I know we were taught that if we are wearing a color, that’s the color of accessories to wear too. But I think contrasting colors show off the accessories so much better!! It’s not easy to change, though, is it??
      Thanks Cathy!!
      XOXO

  • Have I told you how much I love your hair? Having said that I love how accessories layer something with your personality…& I love that dress 🙂 #TeamLovinLife

    • Awww…thanks Jo!! I am so glad I cut it, because it feels more “me”!!
      XOXO

  • Accessories can make SUCH a big difference. I’ve been plus-sized for years and often can’t wear the sorts of clothes I’d like to so for a long time I used accessories to give my outfits a bit of my own personality! #teamlovinlife

    • You are so right Deborah!! The best thing about shoes & accessories, is I can gain 5 pounds and they still fit!! Another reason to love them, right??
But I follow a lot of plus size bloggers, who wear whatever they want—size can be considered just a number like our age! You just have to shop at the places that work for you (and having alterations is so helpful!!)
      XOXO

  • I love Charlotte’s dress – very pretty (without being too girly) and really flattering too – the accessories are work well with it too.

    • Thanks Leanne!!
I forwarded this comment to my mom, so she could bask in the positive words!!! You’ll have made her day, so thanks for that!!
      XOXO

  • I’m a huge fan of accessories and love a wrap, I think it adds such glamour and elan to an outfit. But that dress you are wearing, it needs nothing at all added to it except your lovely self. It is fabulous.

    • That’s a word I don’t hear much lately, Jan—elan!! But it’s true—accessories do add to every outfit (IMO)!! Although I have been trying to edit my addiction lately!!
      Thanks!!
      XOXO

  • You ladies are all so beautiful! I admit I often forget to add accessories, although I have plenty to choose from :)! Although each outfit is beautiful on its own, the addition of a few accessories really takes it up to another level. You’ve inspired me!

    • I kinda think it’s a habit Lana!! I find that even when we are going for a walk, I feel the need to at least wear earrings!! Sometimes I wonder if it’s a throwback from the days I used to be called a boy (before I developed) ha ha!!

Some gorgeous photography in this post Jodie! Love the dresses (yours and your Mother’s) and absolutely love all three necklaces! 🙂 #TeamLovinLife

    • Thanks so much—I even forwarded this comment to my mom, so she could appreciate your kind words!!

  • Judy Gramith

The three of you on the bench is the best! This is a picture to frame. It’s in my heart already!
Jodie and Charlotte, I think you should trade wraps/pashminas.
Your necklace is gorgeous Jodie. I’m coveting it.
I love the print of your dress Jodie; kind of retro!!
Charlotte, the placement print on your dress is so pretty and feminine.
Nancy, you’re perfect and I think geometric/artful prints are going to be trending strong. Your wrap is so soft and cozy looking.

    • Didn’t this photo turn out so nice, Jude?? But you’d laugh at how many it took to get it—there are at least 20 others where we aren’t all looking the same way, or we are fixing our dresses, or talking—ha ha!!
And you’re so right about mom’s & my wraps. There was another comment earlier that she & I should exchange shoes too!!
      XOXO

  • Mother Daughter

Love all of these looks, great job Jodie. That dress of yours is so pretty and the necklace was a perfect touch.

  • You gals look so gorgeous in these outfits, I completely adore how they are styled and the prints. Have an amazing week!

Aaaah great prints, always a good idea. The accessories definitely change an outfit, for me it’s mostly bags and shoes and hardly ever jewellry but I really do love it once in a while. Love, Kirsten xx

    • It’s true that the shoes can make the outfit seem so different too, Kirsten!!
So why not jewelry much?? I love to hear everyone’s reasoning!!

  • You ladies all look so gorgeous! I know I said it in the last post, but I love that you’re doing the side by side comparisons. It’s amazing what a difference accessories can make! I adore Nancy’s necklace. And I never would have guessed your mom’s purse was a cosmetic bag! Too funny! That dress you have too, Jodie, is SO beautiful! I love it both with and without accessories. So pretty!

    • It’s funny how the side by sides make you see some things differently!! I’ll have to remember that, and try it for other posts!! Although, it is more work—ha ha!!

  • Mireille

    Beautiful!!!

  • Love these looks! Wow, glad to see that dress again on you, perfect color and the necklace is stunning. Your mom looks great too, that dress color is so flattering on her and I love Nancy’s shoes.. the accessories make a difference!

    • Thanks so much Jess!!
I do love my accessories with any outfit, really!! And I think I’ve convinced Nancy too!!
I’ll forward this comment to both of them, so they can appreciate your kind words!!

  • Lesley Watson

I love Charlotte’s ‘hack’ with her purse. Isn’t she the clever one. The turquoise with your dress is wonderful and not only pops, but doesn’t fight the print on your beautiful dress. I have a couple new tops that are prints and usually accessorize with earrings & bracelets rather then necklace which too often can get lost on print. The last picture of all three of you together is really good.

    • Isn’t my mom quite the creative one?? I keep telling her she could have her own blog with all of her tips and tricks. She laughs and says no way!! She spends about an hour on the computer and thinks that’s enough! (But I am proud of her for being willing to be on the computer—some of her friends aren’t at all)!
I’ve only lately been trying some restraint with not wearing accessories with certain items. I think I used to always at least wear a small, delicate necklace (probably because that was what I was taught)!!
      XOXO

  • Rebecca Saffer

Some fun ideas here. I rarely wear prints but when I do, tend not to accessorize them much. The dresses are so pretty on you and your mom and fit in a very flattering way. Nancy’s print top is very attractive as well. It’s funny but I am a matchy matchy type of person and thought your shoes would look wonderful with your mom’s dress and her shoes would work well with yours.

    • I love that you said that about matchy matchy Rebecca!! And how funny that my mom and I could have switched shoes—I never even noticed that!!
I know my mom thinks that way about matching, and of course, I do too. But I’m trying my darnest to incorporate other ways to put outfits together! It’s not easy teaching an old dog new tricks…but I’m hoping it’s good for my brain…LOL!!
      XOXO

  • I do love my accessories and also wear them with prints. Your dress is beautiful and how clever is that mom of yours with her purse hack!
    http://styleforlessvegas.wordpress.com

    • You love your accessories almost as much as I do, Darlene!! That’s why we are such good friends!!
Isn’t my mom quite the clever girl?? She could have her own blog with all of her ideas!!
      XOXO

  • Nice comparing! I love Nancy s shoes and your and your mums dresses!

  • All of these looks are so lovely! The accessories (especially those shawls) transform them amazingly. Thanks for reminding me about how important a piece like this is.

    • Thanks Kathrine!!
And the funny thing? The shawls were out of necessity since I knew the restaurant would be freezing!!

  • Your dress is soooo pretty Jodie! I think this is one of the prettiest I’ve seen on you. I’ve linked to your site from my post today since you’ve encouraged me to try red more often and to try Chico’s items. Thank you!

  • Bev @ Walking Well With God

    Jodie,
I thought of you as I am packing to go out of town for a few days to a writers/speakers conference. Thanks to you, I’m being a little more fun and free-spirited with my accessories and adding sweaters for the always over-air conditioned conference rooms. Now if I could just find a way to add some “bling” to this air cast boot I have to clunk around in lol.
    Blessings,
    Bev xo

    • I just want you to know that I truly burst out laughing with your bling for your boots thought!!! But you might not be surprised if I told you that I decorated my boot (this was 28 years ago in dental school) with buttons!! I figured if people were going to stare at it, then it might as well be pretty!!!!
Have a fabulous time at your conference, Bev!! Your comment just warmed my heart!!

Hi Jodie! I know in yesterday’s post, I commented about your mom’s shirt being just fine without the added scarf, and I kind of liked the solid color looks without too much embellishment. But today, honestly, when I look at the printed styles without the accessories, they don’t look as nice! I definitely like the “add-ons” with the prints! And I love your dress, Jodie- it’s gorgeous!

    • That’s funny Donna!! Because I always imagine that prints would be the pieces that would be easier to go without!!
But then again, maybe the accessories tone down the prints?? We should do more research on it? LOL!!!
      Thanks!!!!
      XOXO

  • Katie Mitchell

How fun!! Love these looks…either way! Sometimes I forgo necklaces in summer as not to have something too heavy around my neck in the heat. And love the color of your shoes and accessories with that dress Jodie!!

  • Versatilestylebytracey

My mother was all about the accessories! I come by it naturally. I always say I am not a minimalist because of my love of accessories. I will say that I have grown to pair it down once in awhile with print tops and opt out of the necklace and wear bigger earrings. Love the contrast in the turquoise with the burgundy and pearls are always a plus! Mom’s dress is fantastic on it’s own. I think a nice choker would be great with that dress too.

    • That’s how I should present it too, Tracey—I come by it naturally, because my mom is the queen of accessories!!
We sound very much alike…I’ve been trying to go without at times, especially with some of these ruffly blouses!!
But I do love each and every one of my accessories!!!
      XOXO

  • Eileen Flanigan Sinda

Every single one of you look fantastic! Love your dress, Jodie. Hope you had a great dinner.

    • Thanks Eileen!!
We had such a nice time out together. Since it was Father’s Day, we all took turns talking about our fathers!!! That was Nancy’s idea, and it was really fun!!

Goodness your blog is such a delight! I loved your mom’s purse idea! And the wrap with your dress is “magical”! Great ideas! What a fun blog post!

    • What a wonderful comment to read, Amy—thanks so much!!
And I’ll forward it to my mom, so she can appreciate your words, too!! My mom is quite creative when it comes to her clothes and accessories….we always joke that it’s all the experience she’s had!! 🙂

I love accessories and always wear at least one piece of jewellery if not more. The three of you look stunning and so does Clara!

    • Thanks so much Tania!! I’m glad to hear that you love accessories too!!
Sometimes I wonder if I go overboard with them, but they really seem so fun!!
I’ll make sure to forward this comment to everyone, so they can all smile!!!
      XOXO

  • Such great looks. I absolutely love your dress Jodie. Have a great day! Gemma x

You three look great! I can really see the difference between wearing and not wearing accessories.
I wear very little bling anymore. Earrings always–even when I’m gardening–but that’s pretty much it. Oh, there was a time decades ago when I wore lots of jewelry and makeup too, but now I do everything with a more toned down approach. When I get dressed up, I might add a bracelet, etc, but that’s it. I appreciate accessories on others, but I really don’t want to fuss with them much. It’s simply a matter of personal taste.

    • I totally understand Barbara about the fuss. There certainly are times when accessories seem like too much (or just don’t behave)!
But I love that you still wear earrings even when gardening!!
I went through a phase in adolescence when I used to get referred to as a boy because I wasn’t developed yet and I had short hair. I often wonder if my love of accessories has anything to do with that??
Then again, I’ve gotten away from wearing makeup every day (which I thought would never happen), so maybe we go through stages??
      Thanks!!
      XOXO

During thar trip when everyone thought she was a boy–I purchased a t-shirt that said GIRL on it.

That picture at the very end of the three of you, you all should have that one framed and put in your homes. It is lovely and so good of all of you! I love your dress Jodie, that’s beautiful! While it technically could very easily stand alone, I like how you added the blue tones to accessorize. It adds so much interest. I keep going back and looking at that dress, it’s just gorgeous! I love everything about it! I really like Nancy’s pearls with what she’s wearing, and the wrap, to my eye, makes it look dressier. I like pearls and diamonds with very casual things too, just for the contrast! Your mom’s purse idea is genius, isn’t it? I’d never have thought of that, but sure will now. Sometimes you can pick up those cosmetic bags for so little money, and to add the beads is just the best idea! Make these things do double duty!! Her dress with that overlay is so pretty, just love how the overlay falls in the back. Such a beautiful floral print too! Seriously, that picture of the three of you is so good! It’s everyone’s dream to have each person in a group shot looking this good, eyes open (!!), smiling… Clara! She is so pretty. I think her top, even though it is a bright floral, benefited from the addition of the necklace (which is gorgeous!). The bracelets and the clutch are adding interest here, being a different color. I think she did a great job interpreting the “simple to accessorized” look! I even love the color of the door she’s standing in front of!! : )

    • Isn’t that the best photo of the three of us, Karen?? But you will laugh, that there were many that didn’t make the cut—ha ha!! One of the things I’ve learned on this adventure, that the way to get a perfect picture is to take a hundred of them! Then you can find one good one…ha ha (seriously!!)
I’m glad I showed the side by sides even with the prints. I was wondering if many people would think the accessories were too much—but hey, Iris Apfel does it, right??

She does it in a BIG way!
