Winter Hats– Shrewd Ways for Wearing a Fedora and a Cloche Hat

Wearing a fedora or any type of winter hat is the idea behind our outfits this week as a request from a reader. There are so many options that I KNOW at least one of two will fit the bill for you (see what I did there, LOL)

Quote of the day: “And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” Anais Nin

This quote is more than appropriate because I know many women think that a hat isn’t for them. I’m not sure where that idea came from, but I’m here to tell you that YES, you can wear all kinds of winter hats.
First up was Charlotte with a beret and a felted brimmed hat. My mom is the prime example of someone who may have a ton of hats, but didn’t wear them much before we started blogging.
And then myself with more casual hats. You might laugh that I would need these in Arizona.

And I have heard excuse after excuse of why women don’t wear them. Granted, I’m also a firm believer that we shouldn’t all wear the same things. Yet, I think a hat can be extremely functional to either camouflage a bad hair day or add warmth!

So why the title of shrewd ways of wearing these hats?? Because both of Lesley’s hats have some information that maybe you wouldn’t have guessed!!

Why a Cloche Hat

Lesley is not the only one who loves a cloche hat. You can see Charlotte wearing one here also. Even though they are both considered cloche hats, you can see they aren’t exactly alike.
Why is this style advantageous? One because it’s tighter around the head with very little brim so it’s not as likely to blow off in the wind. And because the brim is smaller, it’s not quite as conspicuous (unless you are sporting a bright colored one like this red one).

You can also see how Lesley and my mom wore them differently. Lesley pulled hers down over her forehead whereas Charlotte pushed hers back to show off some bangs.
I think this is a great way to individualize it so it looks great on you.

Insider tip: Since these types of hats are usually felted wool, they are perfect for adding a brooch to give them a little sass!!

Wearing a fedora even if it was a man's hat

Wearing a Fedora

Lesley loves wearing a fedora especially on snowy days to keep her head warm, her hair dry and her face protected from the elements.

The best detail about this hat is the history of it. It was actually her husband’s grandfather’s hat, feather and all!! So it’s very shrewd to either raid your husband’s closet or make sure to check out the men’s sections when shopping.

Insider tip: Hats are NOT gender specific. You can always find great men’s hats that work for us women. Remember, if you need them sized down, there is hat sizing tape.

Outfit Details

Many of you might think that wearing a hat means you can’t wear other accessories. That it might be too much!! I’m sure that has to do with all of those fashion rules we’ve been brainwashed to believe.
But let’s remember that less isn’t more. MORE is more!!

Even if you believe that less is better, I don’t think that precludes wearing a scarf, scarf clip or even some fabulous necklaces like Lesley is showing.

Insider tip: Scarf clips are a great way to “tie” your scarf or make it stay in place better. We discussed some of the clip options on a blog post, and on a YouTube video.

BTW, when I asked Lesley about her history with hats, she says she started wearing them after seeing Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I can personally attest to the fact that she has quite the collection of all types of hats.
She did say that some cloche hats don’t flatter her. Which is a great example of how just because one example of a type of hat doesn’t look good, that doesn’t mean they all don’t.

My Goal

Thank you for visiting my space on the internet. I like to showcase how it’s never too late to look great for women of any age, size or working with any budget.
I feel I’m here to help move beyond the fashion rules of yesterday and evolve. Style and clothes are made to give you joy. Not cause us stress because we are worried about what other’s think.

My hope is that you get ideas and inspirations from Charlotte, Lesley and myself. It’s not about copying what we wear, but about using what you already have and updating items along the way.
Most of all it’s getting us to think differently and dare I say, have fun?
