Easy & Real 50th School Reunion Outfit Ideas

On the subject of school reunion outfit ideas, Lesley is recreating the one she wore to her 50th high school reunion from a couple of years ago. The summer season is all about these reunion occasions and I even styled a look for a family reunion. And then Charlotte showcased a more dressy look.

Quote of the day: “Whatever you want in life, other people are going to want it too. Believe in yourself enough to accept the idea that you have an equal right to it.” Diane Sawyer

Once you make it past the 10th and 20th class reunions, we tend to realize that we don’t have to run out and buy a new outfit. Yet there are a couple of key points to make sure you look as good as you feel.
In addition, Lesley shares her “date” for the night and more of the details from the real event.

The biggest takeaway is you can be comfortable and stylish at the same time. It’s not rocket science and there are many details you can use to look chic.

Lesley’s School Reunion Outfit Ideas

In Lesley’s words: “Our 50th reunion was held on a lovely warm August evening, in Lakewood Colorado.  I chose this outfit for several reasons.  First, this blue is an extremely complementary color on me ( as you know from many of the outfits I’ve styled often in the past).  The tunic top is the float/ skim style that I love because it hides bumps and lumps, yet is cool and unbinding. Slim white slacks are great for summer dressier wear, yet not over-the-top formal.  I knew I would be standing most of the evening talking to old friends so I wanted shoes that would be kind to my feet. These have a slight wedge for a slight lift but are easy to walk or stand in. I kept jewelry simple so the focus would be on my face and not my bling.
I felt pretty, stylish and most of all comfortable and the evening was memorable and fun.  My ‘date’ for the evening was my darling daughter, Richlyn (who you met here) who also had joined me for my 30th.  My classmates
were impressed and delighted that she wanted to go to an ‘old folks’ get-together. Several fun stories about her experience, will not be retold.  As we were on our way home she told me that my reunion was more fun than hers!

Now let’s break down the outfit a little more to make it easy for you to find one that will work for you.

This Floaty Top

First, as Lesley said, finding a color that is wonderful for you is key! Don’t succumb to grabbing black because you think it makes you look slimmer. Find a color that makes you glow and projects your personality.
The best thing to remember is that good colors will make you stand out and be noticed. Now is not the time to blend into the background.

Insider tip: If you don’t know your best colors, I’ve had two different online color analyses done in the past.

The other detail is finding a top that is more interesting than just a T-shirt. For instance, Lesley’s not only has a sheer overlay, but it’s also asymmetrical.

If you worry about any weight gain in the middle half of your body, then a body-skimming top like this is ideal. You don’t want it too big which would be overwhelming. And you don’t want it too tight because then it won’t be comfortable.

Check Out Those Accessories

Now let’s explore the other details for your school reunion outfit ideas. Accessories are those cherries on the top of your sundaes that give your looks that extra pizzazz and make it all your own.
You can see how Lesley even layered her necklaces in her original real outfit. For our recreated look, she added in an additional one to boot.

The other accessory of choice is the scarf tied onto the purse. Lesley changed it for these photos from a solid blue scarf to a print scarf. Any scarf is a functional item to have for this type of event. You never know when it might get chilly or if you go inside somewhere with air conditioning.
Sure you can carry a jacket, but a scarf can be more convenient. Especially when you tie it to your purse. Even if your scarf is long, you can tie it all kinds of ways around the strap so it’s there when you need it.

Insider tip: One way to tie the scarf is to wrap it around the strap from end to end. I did this trick in this short video.

Colorful Yet Comfy Shoes

At this stage in our lives, we appreciate the comfort factor in our footwear choices. There are many brands that fit this bill that we talk about on the blog. For your school reunion outfit ideas, it’s always good to make sure you know your shoes can withstand time on your feet.

And no sense in just choosing boring, basic shoes. Have fun with color and some modern details.
One reason I theorize is that shoes can make us happy. Because they are in plain view in our sight. You can’t see your own face or top unless you’re looking in a mirror. But the shoes are easy to spot. They may only take up about one-tenth of our entire outfit, but a quick glance is all it takes to realize how cute they are.

One More Thought

Don’t wait until the last minute to buy the fun pieces that look great on you. You just never know when an occasion will come around when you need a wonderful outfit. Sure, you might think, when will I wear this or that? Yet, if you wait until the event is near, you could be pressured into buying something less than wonderful.

This also brings me to the idea that we should be wearing our fun and interesting items E.V.E.R.Y. day. Just like I showcase in my weekly wrap-up posts, every day should be a celebration, and getting dressed gives an instant boost to your mood!!
Besides, once you wear a clothing item all day, you have more information about what kind of events it’ll be good for depending on the situation!

My other piece of advice is don’t try to dress so that you look like everyone else. You are a fabulously unique person, so show it off!!
