Does Adding in Details Make our Outfits Over Accessorized? Ageless Style & Linkup
Quote of the day: “I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.” Mark Twain
Thanks to Debbie as one of our Ageless Style women, in coming up with the theme that details play a huge part in our outfits. As someone who loves to accessorized to a fault, I thought it’d be fun to approach this subject starting with a minimalistic view.
However, today, I’m back with giving full reign to us all to add in the fun. Is it over accessorized? You tell me!
We started with what each of us considered a “basic” outfit. And then added the details that make it “us”.
Just so you realize what good sports my moms are, here we are heading towards the place to take photos. We decided to check out Riverfront Park, and it was a pretty chilly day. See those coats? We will still be wearing them for the next 3 months on and off. But my moms braved the cold and wind for these photos with very little complaint. Hey, at least we went out to eat afterwards!
Jodie’s (50+) Outfit: I do realize that I tend to shop for the “fun” and “interesting” pieces more than the basics items.
It can be a disadvantage at times, because we all need some of those basic things too. I consider black pants one of those items that every woman has in their closet. We even showcased styling them for a dressy occasion last year. For the rest of my basic look, I added a gold sweater and pumps. I realize that the print pumps are not exactly basic, but they match!
I will say that my “normal” is to add in a topper of some sort. Maybe it’s from watching too much “What not to Wear?” But let’s talk about the advantage that it keeps me warmer too!
The faux fur jackets were everywhere this season, and if you didn’t snag one up, there is still time. Even if you don’t wear it a ton now, next fall, you will certainly get your money’s worth. For example there are pastel ones, leopard ones, and black ones. And don’t be put off by the younger women’s stores. These can be the best places to get these trendy items for not so much money. Then if you don’t end up wearing them much, it’s not such a bad thing.
The other way I’ve been trying to add interest to my outfits, is to incorporate a third color. So even though this outfit is neutrals and yellow, I also added in a green scarf and earrings.
I never wore rings when I was working, but now I’m trying to make up for lost time.
It may not be a detail that most people notice right away, but it can be an inexpensive accessory. If you’re a turquoise lover then this one might strike your fancy, or if you prefer neutrals, then this one would fit everyone.
Purses have been another one of those details that I’ve recently become enthralled with. It’s way more fun to have bright and colorful ones, when people actually see them. When you only carry them into the office, and no one notices them, what’s the point?
I’ve been finding many of my latest purses at the thrift and consignment stores. Although there are many inexpensive ones online if you know where to look. For example, with the sales, here and here are a couple under $25.

Nancy’s (60+) Outfit: Nancy started out with a skirt and sweater ensemble as her basic outfit.
She even had earrings on that were neutrals instead of the ones she switched to after.
One of the things I love about adding in details, is how you really can change the focal point with them. I think this ombre blue scarf does exactly that, by grabbing your attention. In fact, adding a scarf in a totally different color is the best way to do that. Don’t you think it also adds some more color to Nancy’s face?
Can a woman have too many scarves? I know my mom doesn’t think so, and Nancy is starting to join in on the fun. These are other great details that don’t need to cost a lot of money. For under $25, I found a floral one, a reversible one, and a solid colored one with fringe.
And on top of that, Nancy even added a pin to the scarf.
I could see how many women might think that a pin and a scarf would be over accessorized. But truly it could be very functional. Haven’t you ever had issues with your scarves staying in place? If so, then this would keep the scarf where you want it.
My mom wore pins on her wrap during one of our brooches posts last year. And Nancy wore a pin on a different scarf the year before that. It’s another great way to pull out those brooches and pins and put them to good use.
This purse was featured very recently when we showcased how my mom could use up all of her material like no one’s business. I do think that carrying a print purse can be perfect for many outfits. Since spring is getting closer you might love a floral purse. Or you could be drawn to a architectural print.
Overall, I think when you have two solid colored pieces, there are loads of ways to add in the details to make it more interesting. Nancy also changed out her earrings, to a very modern tassel pair. The fringe trend is still going strong for the spring, and these are another item that can be an inexpensive purchase. There are neutrals, colors, or even multicolored all under $10.

Charlotte’s (80+) Outfit: My mom started with a very basic outfit of all black.
Now I know many a women that subscribe to the all black look. And I agree that it can be a great way to start and then add in other details.
All black can be easy for most of us. Black knit pants, a black turtleneck and black booties are those items that seem to be so popular. Or you could have all black all in one piece with a jumpsuit or dress.
Let’s talk about the scarf. My mom purchased this when we were exploring Frisco earlier this winter. Maybe you didn’t believe me when I said we did quite a bit of shopping when we were experiencing Wassail Days, but we did. This wrap is a Desigual brand and was on sale for under $20. One of the characteristics about Desigual is the mix of prints, and bright colors.
Of course, you might already have something like this in your closet? Because for some reason, most of us don’t find mixed prints in scarves objectionable. At least that’s been my experience. For example this one and this one would fit the bill for under $25.
And then the other accessories my mom chose were colorful too.
First, I laughed at the bracelet. I asked my mom if it was a bracelet or an old scrunchie? She never really answered my question so I have a feeling it used to be a scrunchie. And you know, I’ve read that they are coming back in style. So if you still have some, but your hair is short, why not wear them on your wrist?
Of course my favorite part is the yellow purse. Maybe because I chose the same color for my purse? But I think also because it shows my mom is stepping outside of her matchingness occasionally. In the past, she would have only worn a red purse since the earrings and bracelet are red. Yet, how fun to pull out another color from the wrap to use.
That’s another great advantage of a multi colored scarf. You could pull quite a few colors from it to accessorize with. I think even a bright pink, white or green bag would also be perfect with this.

Thanks to one and all of you for your support. It means more than you know!
Yes, I did make us all climb to the top of these stairs in the wind and cold. Did I tell you what great sports Nancy and mom are?
And tell me, what your opinion is on being over accessorized? Is it one accessory or more?
