Amuse Bouche #28-Makeup for the Eyes

I appreciate each and every share. Thank you!

Amuse Bouche (ˈä-ˌmüz-ˈbüsh): literally translated into “mouth amuser”.  Wikipedia definition: a single, bite-sized hors d’oeuvre.

Jodie’s use of the term: a small hint or clever tip!  (Think Hints from Heloise!!)

Eye Makeup

If you’re like me, when I put my eye makeup on in the morning, I want it to stay in place all day!  This was especially important as a dentist since patients noticed my eyes more, seeing that my mouth was covered with a mask!  I am not a huge believer that just the brand makes a difference; I tend to think it’s more the method/technique for your skin type that makes it work.  Because of the fact that everyone’s skin is a little different, the best results comes from experimenting.  I did some extensive clinical research in order to find what I really needed on my face just recently.  The clinical research (ha ha): I would use certain products on only half of my face and evaluate any differences at the end of the day.   And by extensive, I did this for over 3 weeks (in no way was that truly extensive, but I did cover different temperature/weather days and even included work out days).  So I’d love to share a couple of tips/suggestions.  Hopefully they will be helpful for you!

What I did: I tried all three of these primers below (on different days) under my eye shadow on the right eye only.  End result: Definitely a game changer.  The eyelid without the primer had creases.  (And I’m using inexpensive eye shadows usually from the drugstore).

A tube of primer lasts at least 3 months if not longer and is worth every penny in my opinion!  I have seen eye shadows advertised with primer in them, but I haven’t tried the product.  Has anyone else tried those?   These are the three primers in my collection.

Under Eyeliners: What I did: I used my gel eyeliner under the right eye and eyeliner pencil under the left.  End Results:  The gel eyeliner had less smudging at the end of the day.  The pencil side was mostly gone depending on the day and activities!

I do think as we get older, it’s better to use eyeliners that glide on your lids, so you don’t have to pull & tug as much.  These gel eyeliners are my favorite especially when they are new.  Unfortunately, you need to discard this product when it starts drying out (which is in a couple months) —to me that’s the hardest part, but trust me, your under eye skin will thank you for being kinder and gentler!

*Now even for you younger gals….keep the under eyeliner shadowed and soft.  That heavy black line under your eye tends to look dated and rough.

Eye Makeup for women in their 50's, 60's, & 70's This one is under $10 here (and many a times there is a coupon from the Sunday paper for either Ulta or Maybelline).  I’ve also used the L’Oreal version which is just as good.  The brush that comes with them both is wonderful—I keep it even when the liner gets tossed!

Eyelash Primers: What I did:  I used an eyelash primer on the right side only under my mascara.  End Results: No real difference in looks/smudging.

For me, the eyelash primer didn’t make a difference in staying power.  But the big difference, was in the application.  Two coats of mascara on the left eye tended to be more blotchy & clumpy.  Whereas, using the primer as the first coat, made the mascara glide on better.  Anyone else notice this?  I have read that many mascaras have primer in them now, but I tend to buy the cheapies!

Eye Makeup for women in their 50's, 60's, & 70's I can’t get this at the drugstore, but Sephora usually has it (here) for around $15.  (Did you know that Sephora gives you a birthday gift if you order in the month of your birth–might as well get the freebies!)

Here’s a big action that makes a difference:  since our eyelashes tend to get sparser as we age, it’s good to use some liner above the eye to make your lashes appear thicker.  A great trick is to dip you small brush (I use the one for my under eyeliner) into your darker eye shadow & run it along the upper lashes so it colors in between them. Don’t just put it above the eyelashes to create a huge line….really try to work it inbetween the lashes so they look naturally thicker!

I didn’t talk about concealer since I rarely use it….that’s why I don’t mind wearing glasses!
