Animal Prints for the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s: As your Clothing Item

Quote of the day: “Nurture your mind with great thoughts, for you will never go any higher than you think.” – Benjamin Disraeli

Don’t forget to enter the giveaway that is going on all week to celebrate our blogversary!!

Since we covered animal print as our footwear in the last post, here; I thought I’d get to the meat of the matter and show different animal print clothing items.

I tried to show 3 unique pieces in this post. I wore a snakeskin blouse, Nancy wore a leopard cardigan, and Charlotte wore a blue leopard, long vest.

Anyone else loving this print? Tell me the animal print that’s in your wardrobe in the comments below!!

Jodie’s (50’s) Outfit: For my animal print clothing item, I layered my blouse under a cardigan. This is one way to wear the print, but not be so conspicuous with it!

If you remember, we did a series about “borrowing jewelry” from the boys, and that’s where I came up with the idea to use a tie clip as a barrette. It works fabulous for my fine, curly hair!!

You can see the snakeskin print a little better in the closeup below. The earrings are more of a rust stone as compared to the burgundy cardigan, but I’m trying not to stress over those tiny details!!

This cardigan is one I knitted about 4 years ago. I chose to knit it because I knew I could wear it to work back in the day! Besides, I’ve always loved the snowflake design, and this one is more subtle, not so huge or all over! I’ve also been loving my OTK boots because they really keep me warm!

Nancy’s (60’s) Outfit: This outfit came together because I know many women who absolutely love an all black look. So I figured, the leopard cardigan would be an easy way to take that all black outfit and spruce it up!

We even kept the accessories neutral and relatively simple. The necklace is on a brown leather cord, so it doesn’t stand out too much and the earrings bring out the white from the sweater.

Nancy bought this leopard cardigan at the H&M on her river cruise last year in Europe!! She said she couldn’t pass it up because it was such a good deal. And I certainly think we’ve put it to good use many times on this blog!

The shoes Nancy is wearing in this post, have been a hands down favorite of hers ever since I twisted her arm to buy them. The heel is a chunky heel so she can walk very easily in them, and they go with absolutely everything!

Charlotte’s (70’s) Outfit: For my mom’s animal print item, I pulled out her long vest that she made over 20 years ago. Funny story about this vest, is she actually bought the material in order to make some book covers for my dad. Then she decided that he wouldn’t like the material, so made it into a vest for herself instead! And she’s probably right—my dad would have looked at this material and thought “hussy!”

Mom is used to wearing a light blue turtleneck with the vest; however, we couldn’t seem to find it. So I pulled out this light blue sweatshirt cardigan instead. The scarf kinda hides the neckline & zipper of the sweatshirt (and adds a fun print mixing, too!).

Mom found these shoes at a consignment shop awhile ago. They are like a loafer but with a small wedge heel!

We even found earrings that are basically the same color as the purple in the scarf!

  • Kathleen McDermott

These is no article of clothing that doesn’t look good in an animal print. I snap up every cute piece I find. These 3 outfits are absolutely charming. Charlotte’s vest is divine.

    • Well, I may have to adopt that thinking, Kathleen, because it sounds like sound advice!! Ha ha!

  • PetiteOver40

You all look so well-put together with these animal prints! Burgundy and olive green are just beautiful colors together, I think. It’s like a feast for the eyes with visions of wine and olives and Italy. Nancy looks so chic in her black-on-black with the cheetah-print cardi. The story about your mom’s vest is hilarious! I like what she created with it and I love her wedge shoes.

    • Jodie Filogomo

I love how you relate my outfit to food, Sherry!! This is one of the many reasons that we get along so well!! Our life is all about food—thinking about it, planning what we’re going to eat, reading about it and then , of course, eating!!
Thanks for the lovely compliments to mom & Nancy too—I forward it to them so they can appreciate the love too!

  • Melissa

You ladies always look fab!! My favorite animal print is leopard print, I’m even wearing it today! I love how you and your mom made some of these pieces… If only I was gifted in that department.
Thank you for linking up with Weekend Wear

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks so much Mel!!
I love how this print has come so far in the last years!!

  • I love the borrowed tie-clip hair thingy! So happy you joined us this week at #FridayFrivolity!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Lisa!! I’ve been wearing the tie clip a lot as my barrette—it makes me feel so good to know they aren’t just sitting in the jewelry box anymore!!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Lisa!! I’ve been wearing the tie clip a lot as my barrette—it makes me feel so good to know they aren’t just sitting in the jewelry box anymore!!

  • Helen Greenwell

I might have thought the long-line animal print vest would be too much, but it’s perfect! Maybe it’s the size of the print, but it looks fabulous!!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I totally know what you mean, Helen. When I first pulled it out of her closet, I was very unsure. But maybe it’s a good example of how trying it can work??

    • Charlotte Miller

Thanks–especially since it was made over 25 yrs. ago

  • Dawn Lucy

I adore animal prints .. I always feel extra sassy when I’m wearing them! Thanks so much for linking up with Fun Fashion Friday!

  • Jean Ann

Jodie you crack me up with your personal comments the “twisting Nancy’s arm”and your dad thinking “hussy” about the fabric. I get a good laugh thanks!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Jean Ann!! You know what they say about “truth”!!

  • The cardigan you knit and the vest your mom made? #Amazing All three looks are spot on!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks for the love Darlene!! Sometimes it’s fun to be creative (sometimes it’s frustrating!!)

  • Jane S
    • Jodie Filogomo

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Mary—she certainly has gotten a ton of use from it!! And she’ll be happy to know other women love it too!

  • I’ve only recently begun wearing animal print – I don’t know what took me so long! Love all these looks, but the leopard vest is my favorite. Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

    • Jodie Filogomo

That’s exactly how I feel about it—why did I wait so long??
Thanks for the kind words, my mom is always so appreciative of any compliments!!

  • AModernMomBlog

Leopard is by far my favorite print and you ladies look great in it! I think my favorite item is the long vest. It’s so dramatic

It is such a stand out piece, huh? Thanks for letting mom know, she’ll be tickled pink!!

  • Kelly M
    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks so much Kelly!

  • I am such a huge leopard print fan! I even think of it as a neutral at times!

    • Jodie Filogomo

And you are exactly right to think that way!! I wish I were more adventuresome when I was younger like you!

  • Yes to all this! I could definitely see myself in Nancy’s cardigan! Also Jodie your boots are amazing! You seriously have an amazing footwear collection!

    Gemma x

  • Nicole Mölders

Thanks for joining Top of the World Style.

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks for hosting it, Nicole!!

  • Amy D. Christensen

Great looks, Jodie! Have I said that before? Well maybe it’s because you keep getting it right! Ha, ha. I love that you are doing your pictures in different places….well, it looks different to me! We usually end up in the back yard because we are short on time and I am too lazy to pack everything up to go some where to take pictures. Ha, ha. – Amy

    • Jodie Filogomo

Rob & I have been taking my pictures when we go out and about—so it’s been totally fun to have different backgrounds for my photos. It’s much harder for mom & Nancy because we try to cram it in for one shoot!! But it’s all about the clothes, right? I guess it really shouldn’t matter about the background!!
Thanks for the compliments—it’s nice to hear when I get it right, since it’s not always! Ha ha!

  • Judy Gramith

What a hit for all of you!!
I wondered right away if you had knitted your beautiful jacket/ sweater. I love it!
I’m partial to snowflakes myself and I’m so impressed with your knitting talent here Jodie. I’m not sure I’d have paired the sweater with a snake print but it’s always fun to do the unexpected now and then.
Nancy looks really sophisticated in this traditional mix of black and leopard. What a cool souvenir of her cruise!
I love the story of how Charlotte’s vest was created. Clearly she was WAY ahead of the animal print trend when she crafted this vest. She looks beautiful in the pale blues!
I have many pieces of animal print. Jackets, sweaters, belts, and even a skirt!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Jude for the lovely thoughts!!
You’re always so stylish, so it doesn’t surprise me that you have a lot of it too!!

  • sugarkisses

I love the 60’s outfit is my favorite in this post. I would rock that leopard print jacket, oh yeah.

    • Jodie Filogomo

And you’d rock it fabulously Rhonda!!
      Thanks for the love!

  • I love the colors of your outfit! The olive is so pretty! 🙂

Thank you so much for linking up at Grace + Lace!

    Bows & Clothes

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks so much Sarah!!

  • I like your choice, all your outfits look very unconstrainedly, and again, your jewelry add your images notes of sophistication and refinement.

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks so muc Olya!

  • I like Nancy’s all black look because it really lets the leopard take center stage. And not to split hairs, but I think your blouse is a snake print….

    • Jodie Filogomo

OMG Lydia—you are so right—my shirt is a snakeskin print—I’m changing it right now on the post—thanks so much for telling me!! I just totally wasn’t paying attention when writing it up!!

  • Laura

I love the beautiful scarf your mom is wearing with her leopard print vest! I think it turned out much better as a vest than bookcovers! I need to pull out my leopard button up more often!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Laura—my mom has so many scarves that it’s hard to pick just one with some of her outfits!! But this one is so pretty, I think!

  • You are making me completely rethink the colorized animal prints with this series! Between your shoes the other day and your mom’s blue-hued vest, I am keeping my eyes out for new colorways to use this versatile print! Love!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Isn’t it amazing how seeing items worn on real women can make you feel differently about them?
I can’t wait to hear what you get Em!!

  • So smart with the tie clip! And I am impressed you knitted the sweater yourself. Loving your animal print.

      Thanks Amy!!
I’ve been so excited using these tie clips now—they were just sitting gathering dust and now I have a function for them (it’s the little things that make me happy!!)

  • animal print is the best! super cute ladies!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Kelsey!!

  • Of course love all your looks, especially your mom’s long vest. However, I have already put in an order for Nancy’s shoes and your boots. Love them both!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Julia!!
Are you a shoe girl, too?

  • I love love love animal print! Especially as a cardi!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      I know, right?

  • Jodie! of course I love this color combo of berry/burgundy and olive on you! The picture on the fence is awesome, and you are a knitting genius! Love the cardi and vest on Charlotte! Im always a fan of animal prints!
    jess xx

    • Jodie Filogomo

It really has become such an everyday print, don’t you think, Jess?
Thanks for the love and nice words!!

  • Love leopard!!!!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Jaymie!!

  • Great looks! I like your blouse under the cardigan (and I can’t believe you knitted it yourself!). Just a touch of animal print can can add so much interest to an outfit. Your mom’s long vest is very nice, too. And how funny that she had bought the material for a completely different purpose! You all are so talented when it comes to making things!

My favorite is Nancy’s cardigan, and I’ve been wanting to get a similar one for a long time now… Not sure what I’m waiting for…

    Andrea’s Wellness Notes

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks for such a positive comment Andrea!
I know how you feel about the cardigan….just a couple years ago I would have thought it too standoutish….but it really adds some fabulousness to an all black outfit!
I’m sure Santa would bring you a leopard cardigan if you asked nicely….ha ha!!

  • Queen of Rods

I was admiring the beauty of your outfit and the natural setting in the first photo, then was blown away when I read that you knitted the sweater yourself. It looks so professional; I never would imagined that it was handmade. The whole outfit is a winner 🙂 Nancy looks great, as always, and I love your mother’s outfit as well, especially the vest, scarf, and earrings together.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks so much Janet!! My husband tells me I should just say thank you when people compliment my knitting….but as a knitter and Type A personality, I realize that it’s not perfect!! I think the buttons on the lapel detract from it, so I’m thinking of removing them?

      • Queen of Rods

I didn’t notice the lapel buttons at all until you mentioned them. It’s funny how we scrutinize our creations so thoroughly…when others can just appreciate them 🙂

        • Jodie Filogomo

          You’re so right!! 🙂

  • Bernadette Laganella

I am an absolute sucker for anything animal print and have adopted Nancy’s look a zillion times.

    • Jodie Filogomo

And you get a ton of compliments too, I bet, Bernadette!!
It is such an easy way to add some sass to an all black look!!
      Happy Thursday!!

  • Tina von tinaspinkfriday

haha cute story about the vest:) You all look amazing in well combined animalprint.
    xoxo Tina

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Tina!! Of course, if my dad were alive and you asked him about this print, maybe he’s say different now??

  • I love to wear leopard print with black myself! It s indeed a funny story!

    • Jodie Filogomo

It is an easy combo, huh, Nancy?
      Thanks and happy Thursday!!
