Ankle Boots for the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s: With Jeans

Quote of the day: “A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life.” – Charles Darwin

We all know what happens when the weather starts cooling down—we reach for some kind of foot coverage that has more warmth than our sandals. And for most of us, that tends to be ankle boots! I explored styling this item 2 years ago on the blog, but I thought it was high time to do it again. In addition, I submitted an article on Sixty + Me’s website regarding this beloved footwear.

And if that isn’t enough variety, Sheela & Eve have joined us again to show how these boots can transcend age and style.

So my goal with styling the ankle boots for the three of us was to actually show them off! Of course you can wear them so that your jeans or pants cover them, but I was aiming to make sure you could appreciate them this time! Thus we cuffed our jeans and proudly wore our booties! How do you wear yours?

Eve of The World According to Eve: I bet every one of you has a black pair of ankle boots in your closet! So a cute tee, jeans & your black ankle boots can be extremely stylish (along with some great sunglasses!)!

Sheela of Sheela Writes: Sheela loves footwear like I do—give us interest, give us heels and give us variety!!  And the embellished jeans—see we’re almost twinsies because Jude made a similar pair for me, here!

Jodie’s (50’s) Outfit: I only have 2 graphic print tees in my closet and this is one of them. My favorite, comfortable way to wear it is with a jacket over top! The other graphic tee made it’s appearance here, here & here!

I figured I’d add some bling with crazy, big earrings and a small brooch. The pin used to be my grandmothers (it’s the initial of my maiden name, Nagy).

I fell in love with these ankle boots when I saw them in a fashion magazine about a month ago. They were more than I usually spend, but I figure if I wear them 50 times, I’ve gotten good use out of them!

Nancy’s (60’s) Outfit: For this ankle boots series, Nancy picked her leopard print booties to showcase!

She wore these same boots in our Leopard Shoes posts that you can see here, here & here.

We added in the cute girl necklace since we left her vest opened and unbuttoned!

And I thought keeping the jewelry all silver would work well with the burgundy vest.

Charlotte’s (70’s) Outfit: Mom wanted to stick with a neutral ankle boot for this series!

If you’re cuffing your jeans in order to show off the bootie, it helps to have a pair of skinny jeans!

Since the shirt we picked was a solid colored, we added 3 different necklaces to add interest. Layering your necklaces can be a fun exercise and allow you to get more use out of them! I showed this necklace layering in a post about 2 years ago, here.

Both mom’s & Nancy’s ankle boots would be great for those of you who can’t wear a high heel. They are only a two inch heel, and quite easy to walk in!

It’s been so much fun styling different items!! Thanks for joining us on this journey!

Anyone else game for a little decoration on your ankle boots?

  • Kathleen McDermott

I became obsessed with ankle boots after seeing them on your blog and Samantha’s. Had a few older pairs, but have purchased many pairs in the past several months to update my wardrobe with a variety of colors, textures, styles and colors. All marked down, of course! Too hot to wear anything but sandals now, but looking forward to this Fall and Winter to sport them with my outfits. They add such a different touch than my beloved ballet flats (which I’ll never abandon).

    • I know what you mean…I’ve added quite a few pairs lately, and I was thinking I needed a silver pair with my $10 rewards from DSW!!
I’ve actually been trying to wear them a little this summer, since I have a couple of pairs with peep toes!!

  • PetiteOver40

Super cute looks, Jodie and Charlotte and Nancy and Sheela and Eve!! 😍

Jodie, your graphic tee paired up with that purple blazer and your adorable boots just rocks! I also can’t get enough of the embroidered jeans thing, so count me among the fans of Sheela’s look as well! I just pulled out a pair of my own booties yesterday–bootie weather is upon us–and now you’ve given me so fun ideas to try!!

    Hugs ❤️
    – Sherry

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Sherry!!
It is so fun to pull out different items from our closet—maybe that’s why I like every season??

  • The problem is that I want all of the pairs!! 😀 I was never really into ankle boots until about two years ago or so, and now I can’t get enough of them. I’m absolutely loving that necklace layering too, it looks so good.

Thanks for sharing over at Friday Frivolity too! 🙂

    • Jodie Filogomo

It is funny, how you can totally not care about a certain style, and then all of a sudden, it’s like a light bulb goes off and you’re into it!!
I think the ankle boots can be so functional for almost any woman!
Thanks for the kind words Jessica!!

  • Some great boots in the links here too. I’m really into these floral boots! x

    • Jodie Filogomo

Aren’t they just so eye catching?
That’s why I had to indulge on this trend!!!

  • Nicole Mölders

Thanks for linking up to Top of the World Style. I love your booties! They remind me of a dress I had in 2nd grade. So beautiful.

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Nicole!!
How cute about the dress—if you ever find a picture, it’d be so fun to see it!!

  • I need to check out those floral boots. Lovely ladies!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks so much Elle!!

  • I’ve got to hop on this floral boot trend! They are soooo cute !!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Monica!! I do love them so much!

  • Amy D. Christensen

I love that there are so many varieties of ankle booties now. There are so many patterns and colors. Great post, Jodie. Loved seeing Eve and Sheela’s as well. Thanks for posting. – Amy

    • Jodie Filogomo

As a bonafide shoe girl…I love the varieties that are available!! Even my husband has some great ones!!

  • Mother Daughter

I am loving your booties. I like ankle boots but have a hard time finding ones that don’t rub. I have a couple of pr of black and I think I have a brown pr ( I forget what I have) but a floral pr might be in my future.

    • Jodie Filogomo

I am the luckiest girl in the foot department—I admit it! I hardly have any troubles finding shoes that fit!
I think the black & brown are definite have to haves—they’re the perfect basics. But I do think a floral pair would add a spring to your step!!

  • James Jill

I must agree you all look wonderful with your different looks . I am a big fan of ankle boots and own several pairs in a variety of colours and heels but no florals, you have got me thinking as yours look great.

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks so much!!
I do love the print booties lately—they just seem like way more fun for some days!!

  • I am such a fan of ankle boots!!! They look great with pants, skirts, dresses, anything!!
    These are wonderful looks!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I agree–to me they are so versatile–I really can’t imagine my closet without a bunch!!

  • All of you ladies look fabulous. I love how unique all your ankle boots are too!
    Rachel xo

  • Terri Webster Schrandt

These boot are cute! I have a couple of pair of ankle boots, but still waiting for the cooler weather to settle in!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I’ve also been wearing my peep toe booties lately, since it’s chilly in the mornings and evenings!!
      Thanks for reading Terri!!

  • Versatilestylebytracey

Well, indulging in those boots are I am sure going to bring you much joy as they are so unique and a statement piece. We have statement jewelry and sweaters so why not statement footwear? I love the leopard ones as well and Mom’s necklace layering is incredible.. I love boots so much and have too many if you ask DH….

    • Jodie Filogomo

That’s what I figured too Tracey!! Sometimes it is nice to splurge!!
Of course, the definition of too many boots is quite variable–ha ha!!

  • I am dying over your booties!!! Talk about statement shoes. These are right up my alley. They pair wonderfully with your look and I like your playful graphic tee. Everyone looks so stylish showing off their fabulous booties!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Jennie!!
I do love this pair—and maybe it’s better to have the unique statements at my feet as I get older? Then people don’t notice my wrinkles—ha ha!!

  • I gushed so much over your boots in my post, Jodie, I feel as though one box of tissues would prove inadequate to wipe off all that drool. Yet, the hype is fully justified!! If yours had higher heels, they would be my fairy tale come true, I kid you not. My happily ever after. I would sleep with them, every night.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Yes…but your husband might get a little jealous Sheela!!
But it’s true that shoes are a girl’s best friend! I mean a diamond is nice, but it doesn’t make your butt look as good as those heels do!!

      • Oh heavens, no!! Rocks aren’t my thing, no matter the price tag. The way to my heart is shoes, shoes, shoes GRIN

        • Jodie Filogomo

          You’re singing to the choir!!

  • You are so much more adventurous with your ankle boots than me! #boringblack

    • Jodie Filogomo

But then again you know I’m a shoeaholic, Darlene.
I certainly have a couple pair of black ones too—I just decided when I saw these…they should be mine!
And life is way too short for any kind of boring clothing!

  • OMGosh! You’ve got those boots I’ve been coveting! LOVE!!! I’m so jealous.

    • Jodie Filogomo

I certainly didn’t show restraint like you’ve been showing Suzanne!!
But in my defense, I did get 20% off when I purchased them…I’m sure that counts for something?

  • Your embroidered ankle boots are right up my alley! I absolutely love that pair – they are on my wish list

    • Jodie Filogomo

I do love them for their uniqueness!!
Besides, it’s fun to have a print on your footwear!!
      Happy Monday Michelle!!

  • Jodie I love those boots!! I almost bought them myself. Ankle boots and boots in general are my favorite. So fun to see you all style them.

    • Jodie Filogomo

These boots were definitely a splurge for me, but I so love them too!! Hopefully I’ll wear them enough to justify the cost!
      Thanks for stopping by Amy!

  • Brenda Mobebi

those shoes are so colourful and tasty to the eyes. I love them. the prints are just great.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks so much Brenda!! I am a shoe girl!!

  • Laura

You all have such great booties! I absolutely adore your printed ones Jodie! They really add interest to any outfit!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Aren’t they so pretty Laura? I just couldn’t resist them.
I wore them to book club the other night and we were talking about them. They aren’t the best height for walking around town, but luckily I don’t do that tons!!
      Thanks so much for reading!!

  • I feel like my biggest issue with ankle boots is that apparently you must have some ankle showing in order to ‘properly’ style them these days. This means only super tiny socks will work otherwise they will show and oh yes, having ankle exposed. Not really ideal when it’s actually cold out!

    • Jodie Filogomo

You’re exactly right Lydia. When it’s cold & snowing, we need warmth, not bare ankles!! But I’m pretty sure I’ll be wearing my print booties under my new flare jeans with a couple pairs of tights underneath when the snow starts flying!!
But I do like the idea of showing them off this way while it’s not frigid out!!

  • Oh this is so up my alley, it’s unreal! Boots, boots and more boots! Heaven!
Jodie, your’s are divine! And the colours of them with the outfit and that tee are glorious. Then those leopard ones – well, you know me, and how I love my leopard booties so Nancy and I need to strutt our leopards on the town together! Finally your Mum, with her don’t mess with me pointy boots and cuffed jeans. What a super cool outfit!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I think we love the ankle boots because they are not only lovely, but so realistically functional too!! Right?
And what fun to have a pair that are different and interesting!!
It’s one way to counteract the colder weather!!

  • Super cute booties, loving the floral pair! You ladies look amazing.

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks so much Aracely!!

  • Jodie, ahhh a subject that I love! I was looking forward to seeing these boots in action! Love the print and jacquard material and the taupe boots and leopard print look great with their outfits as well. I think I own one graphic tee! I like them, but dont wear em much. Yours is cute. and love it under the pretty purple jacket. I hav 2 pair of ankle booties on my Christmas list 🙂
    Have a great week!
    jess xx

    • Jodie Filogomo

I’m way too impatient to have a christmas list—ha ha! When I see something, I tend to want it now—although some things I will wait until they go on sale!
I’m so glad that print booties are a trend right now…because they are super fun!!
See you tomorrow for Turning Heads!! Then you’re almost air bound—I’m so jealous but happy for you!!

  • Judy Gramith

I absolutely love your floral print boots Jodie! !! There is something so unexpected about a boot with a floral print that ISN’T embroidered and western in style.
Have you ever considered wearing your earrings as a pin? I have earrings that I’ve actually turned into two pins by changing the backing. This would be darling on a jean jacket!
Nancy’s leopard print booties are very cute. Leopard has clearly become such a classic print. I especially like it with red!
Charlotte continues to amaze and delight!!
Her jeans are really cool, sort of a Bargello
needlepoint print! Her layered necklaces and pale boots are so “on trend”. I’d love to hear how her cool fashions are rubbing off on her friends!
Booties are too much fun to cover up!! I always wear mine so that they’re visible.
    Great post Jodie.!!!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I never thought about wearing these earrings as a pin—but you’re so right, it’d be super cool! I could even keep them as earrings and still wear it as a pin on my sweaters or something where I wouldn’t need a sharp part to poke through!! I swear, girl…you are full of great ideas!!
That’s a great question for my mom—I know sometimes she dresses “down” when she’s with them, so she doesn’t stand out. Of course, I told her life is too short to do that, but I can understand!!
It’s nice to hear you like to show your booties off too!! Of course I will wear my print booties with my new flares jeans too—but while it’s still somewhat warm out—I need to show them off!!
Thanks for your wonderful support and comments, Jude!!

  • I have a few pairs and actually don’t wear them that much, but after seeing all of you lovely ladies, I’m going to have to put them in rotation more. All of them look so stylish and no one looks like they’re “dressing up” and wouldn’t really wear them in public. I don’t have a patterned bootie yet, more classic colors, but yours totally make the outfit. Great styling ladies!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I feel like between my ankle boots & regular boots, I wear nothing else when it gets cold!!
That’s why I really wanted this print pair—might as well have some fun during the cold months!!
      Thanks for stopping by Julia!!

  • Queen of Rods

Really cute outfit, Jodie. I love the way that you put it together…and those boots!!! Having the floral print on the heel feels so modern. I smiled when I saw your “western” earrings 🙂

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Janet!!
I got those earrings probably 10 years ago in a thrift store!!
They definitely are big enough, huh?
I have been wearing my boots quite a bit…although they are a little high to spend all day in them!

  • Debbie Stinedurf

Both your mom and Nancy’s boots are fabulous…especially love the leopard. But yours…Yaasss!! Total stand outs; the floral print is perfection. I love wearing my ankle boots with things that show them off…cuffed jeans, dresses, etc. And only two graphic tees??? How is that even possible!?

    • Jodie Filogomo

Hah—you made me laugh Debbie—I probably should increase the amount of graphic tees in my closet. How else could I call myself a fashion blogger, right?
And you know I love print footwear (well, any footwear really)—just like your floral lace ups. So when I saw these booties, I just had to have them. They make me smile!!

  • Very very very very often I start when I open your post with:Oh no! Omg! Jodie, those leopard print ankle boots are just the ones I was looking for!!! My God how is it possible. Just exactly those heels. Unbelievable! I ordered other ones now because I could not find the perfect ones. And these are also not in my size. Hahaha, so pretty and yours too! I have to go now before I really start druling….

    • Jodie Filogomo

Aren’t her boots to die for Nancy? She found them at DSW…and I almost ran over and bought myself a pair because they were only $15—incredible, I know! But I restrained myself at the time, although I am a little envious now! The thing is they are the perfect heel height and everything!!
