Keeping an Athletic Vibe with our Capris & On Monday’s We Link Up

3 generations for athletic capri style

Keeping an Athletic Vibe with our Capris

Quote of the day: “He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.” Friedrich Nietzsche

When Sheela and Eve, another mother and daughter team, asked to join in with an entire series about styling capri pants, how could I say no?  I’ve paired up with this duo quite a few times in the past. And truly, I love seeing how we all interpret the same idea differently. Now you may wonder why we are even talking about capri pants at the end of September. But you can blame Hurricane Harvey for postponement of this topic. We were all set to have this be posted the end of August. However, Harvey created some difficulties for Sheela, so we had to reschedule.

So this idea will be good timing for my friends who live where the seasons are opposite. And for those of you in the areas where it’s getting too cold for this idea, just pin these images in your Pinterest boards, and then they’ll be perfect for next spring and summer.

For the idea of athletic capris, I put my own spin on this by using a different athletic item instead of the athletic capris for both moms. I paired each item for everyday while they were wearing capris. I on the other hand stayed with the athletic capri theme. Now let’s see how Eve and Sheela made it work.

I’m also co-hosting Roxanne’s link up party below! Make sure to add your blog post and join in on the fun!

Eve (The World According to Eve): Eve is decked out in athletic capris along with her fabulous wedge sneakers!!

She could certainly hit the gym in this outfit, but she could also be hanging out for fun.

Athletic Capris style for workout

Sheela (Sheela Writes): Sheela has been on a huge fitness kick and working out like no one’s business.

So I was super proud of her to show off her midrift here in this photo! She has recently hurt her shoulder and will be having rotator cuff surgery next week.

Jodie’s (50+) Outfit: I grabbed my athletic capris to wear out to dinner.

I have to admit that for the life of me, I would never have considered wearing my workout gear out to happy hour before I started blogging. I had seen too many What Not to Wear episodes to even consider this. But heck, these athletic capri pants don’t look that much different than everyday capri pants, right?

Especially since they are being overshadowed by this fabulous top. I won this top when I joined in the #thriftedchicstylechallenge on Instagram back in July. It’s such a colorful and lightweight, kimono styled top. I almost think I’m channeling my inner Golden Girls girl.

Nancy (the 60+ model) has a top like this that she wore recently for our walking event in the summer. I always thought it was such a versatile piece, so I was excited to get my own. There are many tops like this available if you like this style. There’s some that are darker and some that are sheer.

Athletic capri pants with other great items

I figured between my footwear and top, that my athletic capris would work to look like a real outfit.

You know how I love my shoes and think they can make or break an outfit. Truly, I think that if you wore these black sandals or these tan sandals with your workout capris, it’d be the same thing! And this is the time to add to your sandal collection because of all of the sales. Sure, you probably can only wear them for another couple of weeks, but then next spring they’ll be like new.

Athletic Capri style with fun accessories

My earrings are from the Rocksbox service I’ve still been trying out! I absolutely loved these earrings when I added them to my wishlist, and the funny thing is they matched this top so perfectly which was unintended. Before wearing them, I thought for sure that I’d end up buying them! At least I would have if I’d seen them in the store.

But what I realized when I wore these earrings is that they didn’t show up with my hair color. If the dangles had been lighter, it would have made such a difference. Luckily, I could send them back and not feel like I’d wasted my money.

Nancy’s (60+) Outfit: I really wanted to show some variety with our athletic capri style, so I had Nancy wear an athletic t-shirt.

I know the t-shirt has become very popular and common place and certainly isn’t just for working out anymore, but I thought it’d be fun to style it anyways. I do think many of our workout shirts, could really be versatile as regular wear, if you get creative with it’s pairings.

Athletic Capri Style for Women over 60

For this look, I thought that wearing denim capris would still be casual yet could be worn almost anywhere. I know many of us are looking forward to the fall styles, but here’s another item that can be found for a great deal at this time of year.

If you are looking for a white pair, then these are under $25, or this pair comes in a lighter wash.

Athletic Capri with t-shirt

Of course, like I’ve shown in the past, I feel that the accessories can upgrade your outfit too!

Don’t you think the fact that Nancy has on a necklace, makes the outfit look less super casual? We did choose a choker like necklace for this outfit. Many chokers can be adjusted so they aren’t so tight against your neck. It’s one way to add in a modern vibe to any outfit.

Athletic Capri for t-shirts

And last but not least are the shoes. I talked a lot about espadrilles at the beginning of the summer, and if you didn’t jump on the band wagon then, it’s not too late. Again, the sales can be fabulous this time of year. There are so many varieties of espadrilles like the lace up ones, or the ankle strap ones.

Charlotte’s (70+) Outfit: For my mom’s athletic capri look, I picked out athletic sneakers to wear.

Confession time, these sneakers were actually mine that I wore for our athletic shoe series earlier this spring. And yes, I bought them even though they were a little too big for me, but I always figured I could wear socks with them. But they still seemed too big, so I passed them on to my mom who is a half size bigger shoe size than I am.

Athetic Capri style for Women over 70

I realize that the rest of mom’s outfit isn’t anything that would remind you of work out and athletics, but that was the whole idea for my thinking in this capri post.

We added in her fringe jacket that is almost like a kimono in that it’s really lightweight. Fringe is still quite popular in the stores, so if you like the detail then here are some fun offerings. Jackets are perfect for anytime, or you could sport the fringe on the bottom of your jeans.  Of course there is always the necklaces and earrings if you would rather keep the fringe for your accessories. The three of us explored fringe on different items last year too.

Sneakers as part of athletic capri style

I have to admit that wearing sneakers can be so much more stylish lately.

My personal pet peeve is the white sneakers worn with a regular outfit. To me they just look out of place. If you agree then you might also like some of the same fun sneakers that I’ve seen lately. Like this leopard pair or how about stripes?

Of course, I made my mom wear these without socks for this photo, but both my husband and I are fans of the no-show socks lately. I’ve had good pairs and bad pairs, so if you didn’t like them at first, you might try another brand.

athletic capri style doesn't have to be sloppy

The last thing we added to my mom’s outfit was some color in her shirt and scarf. I’m sure many colors bring about certain feelings and emotions. For example a grey sweatshirt color makes me think of working out. So even though this peach color is usually seen more in the spring time, I think it’s fun to wear it with the darker colors of fall.

Athletic capri style can be comfortable yet it can still look good. Whether you embrace the total athletic look with your capris or only add in a piece of it, you can certainly get a ton of mileage from it. I linked to some interesting options below that on their own, could be worked into almost any outfit. Tell me if you agree?

Thanks to one and all of you for your support. It means more than you know!

On Monday’s we Link-Up

If you don’t know Roxanne from Glass of Glam, you’ll be seeing more of her in the future, because she’s my partner for the upcoming Bridging the Gap campaign. She’s a lawyer by day, with fabulous style and charm!

As a co-host of the party, I got to pick out a favorite outfit from the participants of the link up from last week. My favorite look from last week’s party was Lisa from Coast to Coast because she paired her bright pink necklace with her orange top. I always love trying out new color pairings, and this one is so unexpected!

Make sure to also check out Roxanne’s blog for her pick of the week from the linkup!

Here are other work out inspired pieces that you could integrate into your athletic capri style!

  • Jodie, thank you SO much for joining Eve and I this entire week. Fun!!! I’d forgotten how thrilling it is to be a part of a blog collaboration, it’s been that long. And thank you for being patient with my numerous timeline extensions, I am literally rolling my eyes and shaking my head as I type this, I don’t know how you put up with me.

I also want to say that I (always) learn new things whenever we do something together. And this time around, it’s this thing called denim capris. Like the ones Nancy’s sporting ever so prettily. I would never have thought capris could look that fetching in denim, or that denim could look so not bulky in capri-form. I like them so much I went out (ok, online) and got myself a pair!!! xoxo

    • You always hold a soft spot in my heart, Sheela. And luckily old age has taught me that being flexible is a good thing (whether that’s with timelines, or the body…ha ha). So no biggie on putting these on hold until now!!

  • Cute outfits ladies! Yup, sneakers are extremely comfy, and can be really easy to style with different outfis.

    Jessica |

    • Thanks Jessica!!
We have so many options now—that’s the best thing ever!!

  • Anna Parkes

This week Charlotte gets my vote, but that may be something to do with the fact that I’m featuring my fringe jacket on my blog today too! I do love your poncho top Jodie – it’s such a riot of fabulous colours!

    Anna x

    • Thanks so much Anna–that will totally make my mom’s day!!

  • all three looks are very neat and so comfortable. Love it.

  • You guys look wonderful! I really like your printed top and your mom’s fringed sweater. You’re right, adding the necklace to Nancy’s outfit is the extra piece it needs!

Thank you for being a wonderful co-host this weeks, and for such kind words about me and my blog! You’re the best!

    • Thanks Roxanne!!
Every word I said is true….it’s been the best to find other bloggers who are so fabulous both inside and out!

  • Love the capris! The styling is excellent. I love the abstract print you are wearing and I also love the fringed jacket. Haves great week ! I also capris with booties this time of year.

  • I never wear those before, I tend to like ankle jeans or trousers. I love trying out new styles with fashion though. That is what makes us artists of our own styles 🙂

    • You are so right Heather. And I never wore these pants until just recently, because I’d wear shorts instead!! But it’s fun trying out new and different styles!!

  • Mother Daughter

I love capris and wear them as long as possible. I also have a tshirt I got in the fitness department but I wear it all the time with my capri’s. It is the only statement shirt I have. lol

    • I think capris work very nicely for so many occasions!! I’m glad you’re on board, Victoria!

  • It is fun to see you all style one thing so differently! I don’t normally wear capri pants (I tend to opt for a slightly longer cropped pant), but I love them on you.

    Amy Ann
    Straight A Style

    • I’m really the same. It’s rare that I wear them….but who knows? Maybe I will soon, since I’m finding all these ways to wear them.
      Thanks Amy!!

  • I don’t normally wear capris, I feel like it shortens my already short self. I do like how you styled them and those lace up flats are just adorable!

    • I think I’m shorter than you are Ruth, and maybe that’s why I never really wore them much. But lately, I’m trying to embrace myself as is—wrinkles, scars and shortness….ha ha!! We will see how long that lasts!!
      Thanks so much!!

  • Lisa Richardson

Jodie!!! Thank you for the feature sweet lady.😘 Your athleisure pairing of your capri’s and kimono style top are great. I think this would be the perfect travel outfit or for a day of running around in the city seeing the sites. Be comfy and stylish all at the same time. Love it! Who’d have ever thought we’d all be embracing going out in our workout wear?! XO

    • You are so right Lisa!! I can’t believe I went anywhere besides the gym in these pants—but hey… looked okay!!!

  • Jewelry and accessories really do go a long way to dress things up, and that fact that you are styling active wear is definitely not on my mind when I see these looks!

  • I wouldn’t have thought your capris were athletic wear – they look like regular ole capris in the photos. Your outfit is fabulous! Love your top!

    • Thanks Lindsey!! It’s funny how once I categorize an item in my brain, I don’t usually think about it in other ways. That’s why I’ve enjoyed blogging so much—I think it’s made me more creative in my wardrobe!!

  • Capri pants are my favorite – as a tall person, I don’t have to worry about them being the right length! Love all your outfits!

    • See, there is always a silver lining, right, Lana??

  • Your capris look fabulous and I love your tassel sandals! Everyone had such great looks! Beautifully Candid

  • You all did a great job with these outfits! So versatile!

  • Love the athletic vibe ladies! You look great in capris! =)

  • Shauna C

So glad to have found your blog! I love it! And all of these looms are so great!

    • Thanks so much Shauna!! I hope you’ll stop by again!

  • I would have never guessed your pants were athletic wear! You styled it perfectly Jodie!

    pumps and push-ups

    • Thanks Brooke!! Hopefully our friends who I went out with this evening, didn’t realize it either!!

  • Laura

These are great looks! I am particularly loving your fun shoe choices for each of these outfits!

    • Ah yes!! The shoes are really the things I absolutely love. Of course, can I say that I don’t love all clothes…of course not! Shoes are just easier because I can gain 5 pounds and they still fit!!
      Thanks Laura!!

  • I don’t get the athletic vibe from any of the looks. They’re cute, everyday, comfortable looks with style! #JustTheWayiLikeIt Especially love that top you won!!

    • Well, then maybe I succeeded in my goal. Because as much as I enjoy being comfortable, I do want to look nice!!
      Thanks Darlene!!

  • Judy Gramith

Even though your capris are “athletic” I’m thinking that’s primarily because of the knit fabric they’re made of. I think I recognize the Tek Gear brand as either Kohls or Target (?). This exact style with a bit of width in the lower leg used to be referred to as a Yoga pant before the market became SO flooded with women’s athletic clothing and the legging style became so popular. I think all of you are simply wearing capris. Whether you work out in them or not is all about comfort.
You outfits are all darling from head to toe. Jodie your colorful lightweight poncho is beautiful and WOW is it going to be versatile. Nancy looks comfy and stylish in those cute denim capris but her espadrilles are stealing the show! Charlotte is looking so fall transitional in her fringe and neutral tones. I love olive and black and the peach in her t-shirt really lights up her face!
It’s fun to see Sheila and Eve again after a long absence. I hope they faired better than so many following hurricane Harvey. Sheila is looking quite fit!! She is clearly enjoying the athletic apparel for all of its applications! Yea Sheila!!

    • You’re so right Jude…I’ve had these capri work out pants for over 5 years (eek…maybe more).
Luckily Sheela’s place survived without much damage, but they did have to evacuate. Isn’t that crazy???
Thanks for all of the wonderful thoughts!!

    • Thank you SO much, Judy!!! I’ve been trying very hard to stay on track during the past few months of vacation but it’s been challenging GRIN as for Harvey, we were so immensely blessed. The only dry street in the midst of Memorial Drive (right where Buffalo Bayou/Briarpark are) xoxo

      • Judy Gramith

You must carry some good karma Sheila. With so many of your neighbors experiencing various degrees of loss it must be strangely difficult to be among the few who were spared.
Are you planning to return to blogging or are you enjoying an extended and perhaps permanent vacation? As you work to reshape your body it’s got to be fun to discover new fashion “ops” too! You are a talented writer as well and one who would be fun to add to the list of bloggers I follow.

  • I have capris but they are very skinny so they are archived for when capris go skinny again. I love your looks Jodie. Perfect. Gorgeous sandals you’ve added to the look.

    • I guess I haven’t archived mine yet, Anna!! Not that I don’t like the wide leg versions, but I love having the variety!!! You should probably come help me with my closet!!
      Thanks Anna!

    • And for some reason, Anna, I wasn’t able to comment on your post. I loved your print blouse that you were wearing!! And thanks so much for linking up!!

  • I don’t have any actual pairs of capris but I love to cuff up my jeans to wear them in all seasons!

    • I think you bring up a great point, Michelle!! The way we have been cropping our pants lately, does make them like capris sorta!!

  • mummabstylish

I adore capris, although my wide leg crops have taken over for the Autumn. Yours are super and I love your mums trainers. x Jacqui
Love the link-up Jodie, many thanks. x

    • That’s a brilliant way to think about them for autumn—just pull out the wide leg crops!!!
      Thanks Jacqui!

  • Terri Webster Schrandt

When capris were reintroduced in the early 00’s I was so happy. Love the look and the different lengths. You all rock those looks, Jodie!

    • Thanks Terri!! It makes me wonder what women wore before this?? I mean when it’s hot outside, and we need to keep cool, there are only so many choices, right??

  • Fun looks, I commented on sheila’s site, but wanted to mention that i love Nancy and your moms style too. Love the olive and black combo and the quilted sneakers. your poncho is lovely too jodie!
    Have a great week!
    jess xx

  • Ladies, you got so much style. Capri pants are really special, and you are rocking them.
    Have a great week.

    Love, Esther

  • Rebecca Saffer

As always, you ladies put together some fun casual looks. Jodie – I love your sandals! It is like summer in NYC today so I will put my sandals on also.

    • It’s nice when you can extend the summer for another couple days or weeks!! I’m a little jealous right now, because I had to put on a sweater today!! LOL!!
      Thanks Rebecca!

  • So, here in Michigan we are still having summer weather (90 degrees today and has been for the last several days and will be this week! Yuck!) so it is still shorts season, let alone capri season. I have a couple of pairs of athletic capris but only wear them working around the farm. Mine do not look as nice as yours at all. I could not get away with wearing them out in public! Sheelah is great and such an excellent writer and I love your mom’s whole look! Happy Monday Jodie!

    • Well, it’s nice to know not everyone thinks I’m crazy by posting capri outfits right now!!
I bet your athletic capris don’t look much different than mine, Julia. Besides, if you have a crazy, fun focal point of a top—who’s going to be checking out the leggings anyways…ha ha!!

    • Charlotte Miller

Thanks so much for your find words.

    • Thank you so much, Julia!! I know I haven’t commented much (I read all you write most faithfully, the avid subscriber to your feed that I am) but I am SUCH a fan of your blog and your posts.

  • Bernadette Laganella

I love my kimonos. I have several. They can take a plain black dress and change it up dramatically. I am going on a cruise soon and will be taking one black dress and several kimonos for variety.

    • That’s such a smart move, Bernadette!! Because kimonos are so versatile!!
How fabulous you’ll be on a cruise soon—you deserve it!!!

  • Capris aren’t normally my favorite wardrobe staple but I love how you ladies styled them. Love your patterned top Jodie and thanks for the link up!

    • I totally feel the same way Kathrine. Although when people get all up in arms over a style or piece of clothing–it almost makes me want to like it more—I’ve always been one to root for the underdog!!

  • He, shelaa is back? Finally!😘😘 I love capris, and I like the way you styled it! And huh, remember those shoes okay…..badbuy!

    • Right, Nancy?? I do succumb to buying things that don’t really fit, don’t I? When will I ever learn!! Ha ha!!

    • Yes, ma’am HUGS!!!

  • I love your capris! I have a few pair that I will never let go. I didn’t get them styled this summer but maybe a fall transition style is in order. I love your poncho. It has such happy colors! Thanks for the inspiration!

    • Thanks Cheryl!!
I was laughing with a friend, that maybe I need to change my outfits at least twice a day, to wear everything i have…ha ha!!
I have a feeling that your have as much as I do!!! And that’s not a bad thing!

  • Amy K

Such a fun post! All of your posts are fun! I loved the different approaches to the Capris, and you totally rocked those capris for a dinner out! I clicked on your Bridging the Gap partner Roxanne, and followed her social media as well, she looks like a fascinating and beautiful person! Great start to a great week with another Jodie’s Touch of Style!
    Love, Amy from

  • Karen

I was interested in this post because I don’t consider myself a capri person and wanted to see how all of you styled them. You covered the gamut here from workout wear to more dressy with some good ideas. I love your top with the black pants. The black makes all the colors in the top stand out and looks classy, yet fun. I wouldn’t have thought those were athletic pants, so you disguised that well! I like the fit of Nancy’s capris since they are a snugger fit. And definitely the necklace dresses up the outfit. Amazing how that works, you go from super casual to a little dressier by adding blingy earrings and a necklace! Your mom’s look is polished, and I love that jacket! It has such a nice drape and her scarf is the perfect finishing touch! I might have to give capris another look! I think with a snug fit, I could make friends with them after seeing your inspiring photos!

    • It’s true that capris have certainly gotten a bad rap. And I think they really are like anything—the right style & fit can make a world of difference. And I understand when people complain they “chop off the leg”, but then again, don’t skirts??
Thanks for the fabulous compliments, Karen!! And Happy Monday!

  • Great looks, all three of you have great style! I love the idea of your blog, and think it’s really cool that you inspire women of all ages. Keep up the good work!

    • Thanks so much Marije!! I hope you stop by again and see what we have to offer. Because hopefully, it’s not just for older women!!!

  • Great outfits! have a lovely start to your week. Gemma x

  • Mireille

Woww! I love your look! That top totally transforms your outfit into a dressy outfit! Love those sandals too!

    • Thanks so much Mireille!! It’s such an interesting top, that I had to get crazy with it!!

  • Lovely ladies wearing that capri style.
I definitely love how you differently styled it.

    Much Love,
    Zarrah | The Bandwagon Chic

  • I’ve just tried the Capri pants Jodie. I didn’t think I would like them on my short legs but I did. I will be popping my knee high boots over them for AW styling xx

    • I thought exactly the same thing, Laurie. But it’s funny how they can look good with the right fit and silhouette!! Can’t wait to see you wear them!!

    • I’ve actually found capris to be the best option for my short legs, Laurie 🙂 that could perhaps explain why I own this particular pair here in, oh I don’t know, 7, 8 different colour ways xoxo
