Camisoles for the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s: Under a Shirt

If you’ve seen camisoles at the store but don’t know how to style them, then this series of posts is for you.

I had the greatest suggestion for a blog series from a reader named, Ann. She states “I am at a loss with camis. I look at the stacks at the stores and just don’t quite know what to make of them.” I really can relate because it wasn’t many years ago when I thought the cami idea was silly. I remember Stacey London from “What Not to Wear” would talk about them. I’d be thinking that if you had a correct fitting shirt or dress, you wouldn’t really need them. But sometimes we do need them I’ve found.

Quote of the day: “Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.” – Anais Nin

Since my main niche in the fashion blogging world is women over 50 years old, then I would think that we don’t buy the camisoles to wear by themselves. But it can be extremely beneficial to have a couple for underneath other items. And thus this series came to life starting with wearing a cami under another shirt. 3 different kinds of shirts come to mind when I think about this category. One would be a sheer shirt (we did a series on that this summer-here, here & here), a mesh shirt (which I’m showcasing) and a low cut shirt (the likes of which Nancy & mom are wearing).

We tried them out other ways for this series too. One way as under a dress and one with a blazer. Make sure to check those posts out also.

Jodie’s (50’s) Outfit:

I’m wearing my camisole under a mesh top I picked up this summer from the consignment store! I didn’t wear it as much as I thought I would this season. I’ll try harder next spring!

The jeans are the ones Jude embellished for little ‘ole me!! You can see the DIY instructions here, if you’re interested! Since this picture was taken, I have cut off about 2 inches in length and turned them into having a fringed hemline!

If you’ve been reading other blogs at all, then you probably already know that chokers are coming back in style. I happen to love this trend, and found this one in the back of my jewelry box from many moons ago!

Nancy’s (60’s) Camisoles Outfit:

Nancy bought this blouse last year and has gotten quite a bit of wear from it. However, it is a little low in the front for her comfort. Thus she always wears some kind of shirt underneath.

I chose her white jeans to wear and kept the bottom half neutral with beige ballet flats! I figured, it would put the focal point on the top half!

Usually the cami chosen for this shirt is the black one, but I decided to add in a little extra color with a pink one! Therefore, we picked out pink earrings & lipstick too!

Charlotte’s (70’s) Camisoles Outfit:

This is a Covered Perfectly shirt that mom was given this spring. They don’t have the print ones available anymore, but there are solid colored ones still for sale. It shows more skin than my mom likes to show, so I figured the idea of camisoles under it would be perfect.

I had mom also wear her white jeans, but added in some fun colored loafers for some variety!

When  I picked out these earrings for mom to wear, I didn’t realize they were so old, that they were the screw type! It amazes me that they don’t fall off more! Anyone else still have these kind of earrings?
