Casual & Chic: Ideas for a Family Reunion Outfit

Summertime can certainly mean it’s time to think about a family reunion outfit. Every family reunion is different, but I came up with some ideas to keep in mind when putting your look together. Of course these ideas would work for many other occasions also.

Quote of the day: “If one only wished to be happy, this could be easily accomplished; but we wish to be happier than other people, and this is always difficult, for we believe others to be happier than they are.” Montesquieu

Getting together with any group of people can be fun or full of angst, LOL!! But even if you can’t predict the outcome of a gathering of humans, you can predict the family reunion outfit to be as wonderful as can be.

The key to making your outfit perfect?? Make it reflect your personality. Many women shy away from color but keep in mind that there is a huge psychological factor to color. What you wear affects how others react to you and how you feel.
Being confident in our clothing is so important, and the best way to be confident is to have items that fit well, and you feel great wearing. Do you remember the Mere-exposure effect from my post about beginning step to wearing hats? If you see yourself in something over and over, you’ll feel more comfortable in it. So banish that thought that you don’t look good in _____ . Try all kinds of styles and have fun with your looks!!

Colorful Family Reunion Outfit

I started my family reunion outfit with a pair of comfy, linen pants. I figured there could be many activities where we are sitting around, so pants could be more functional. Yet I needed a linen blend to stay cool in the summer heat. Even if the activities are inside, you still have to get from the car to the place and there’s no sense melting more than you have to.

Insider tip: These pants have a paper bag waist where the belt is attached. So I untied it and put them inside the pants so they don’t create bulk. Some pants like these you can remove the belt. Or you could cut them off if you hate them. Remember your clothing can be made to fit your lifestyle and needs!!

BTW, these pants were a pair from one of my Fashom boxes. Fashom is an online box of clothes that you request whenever you want (it’s not subscription). If you use my link, you can get $20 credit to spend (and so will I, thanks!). More about this online clothing service in my spring box request here.

Then I had to choose a top to go with these pink print pants. You’ve seen me wear a red top and an orange top with these in this post. before. Therefore, I decided to add in my favorite color which is yellow. I know it may seem like a lot of color, but color is happy, and a reunion should be a happy occasion.

Smocked Tops

If you’ve been scouring the shops lately, you may have noticed how smocking is making a comeback. I bought this top last year from Nordstrom Rack online and didn’t even realize that the back was totally smocked until it was delivered.

For those of you who think that the smocking might be too form fitting when it’s the entire top, then the option of having just the back smocked is brilliant. I love how the top is somewhat loose in the front, yet not as overwhelming all over. Plus the ruffle hemline makes it much more interesting than a straight finish.
I also love the smocking at the bottom hem of the top.

Another detail is this yellow blouse is a very subtle print. Therefore, I have on three different prints if you include the scarf on my purse.

How the Accessories Tie it Together

Since the goal for my family reunion outfit was to showcase my fun and colorful personality, I felt the need to add in another color to the mix. My inspiration came from the earrings and the scarf. Both of them had different shades of turquoise, so I even grabbed a turquoise pendant that used to be my father’s.

This scarf is a smaller square scarf which works wonderfully to tie to a purse handle. I chose a pale pink purse for the overall neutral look, yet adding the scarf gives it a little more personality.
So grab your scarves like this and start adding them to your purses!! It’s such an easy way to wear them in the summertime.

The earrings are from a fabulous small business called Audra Style. The company makes them here in the USA and creates such whimsical pieces. I wasn’t sure I would wear this pair much because they are more muted, yet I have worn them a lot. Which goes to show it’s nice to have options!! This pair is called the Amanda but are only available in a couple of colorways.

This bracelet was made by Judy, who has become such a friend through this blog. I love layering my bracelets, but it’s even nicer when the bracelet is layered for you.

Summer Sandals

Even though I love my colorful shoes, there’s also a great time to wear the neutral ones. And a tan espadrille sandal is certainly a basic especially when I’m wearing a colorful outfit.

I happened to find this pair at Goodwill recently. I wasn’t really looking for something like these, yet I’ve found I wear them more than I thought I would. Which is a wonderful reason to get more adventurous with items specifically when they are a deal.

Remember, if you always choose the same styles and colors for your wardrobe, you’ll always look the same. Let’s have more fun and switch things up occasionally!

Insider tip: Many shoes have a zipper in the back to make them easier to get on and off. The ankle straps that buckle can be a challenge. That’s why I found a way to switch out the buckle with velcro.

My Goal

Thank you for visiting my space on the internet. I like to showcase how it’s never too late to look great for women of any age, size or working with any budget.
I feel I’m here to help move beyond the fashion rules of yesterday and evolve. Style and clothes are made to give you joy. Not cause us stress because we are worried about what other’s think.

My hope is that you get ideas and inspirations from Charlotte, Lesley and myself. It’s not about copying what we wear, but about using what you already have and updating items along the way.
Most of all it’s getting us to think differently and dare I say, have fun?
