Casual Choker Top Outfit Ideas

Quote of the day: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch trade winds in your sails. Explore, Dream. Discover.” H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

This quote is ever so appropriate considering we are styling some choker top outfit ideas that are a relatively new trend. I know many women look at the new styles they see on the young girls and think it’s not for them. I only say that because I used to be the same way.

However, lately I really try to analyze these trends and figure out how they could be wonderful for any of us. Yet I have to laugh because now that I’m on this choker top bandwagon, I can’t seem to find them everywhere. That’s me in a nutshell—-always behind on the trends!

The best thing about having three of us showcase choker top outfit ideas? You certainly get a range of different ways to approach it, and figure out if it’ll work for you. While these are the casual versions, you can also see these exact same tops styled in a more dressy outfit.

When I originally saw these tops, I thought they’d be perfect for women who don’t like to accessorize, because it’s like there is a necklace built it. Yet you can see that Nancy & mom both wore necklaces with their choker tops. A perfect example of how we are all different.

Why I Wore This Outfit

When I put on this dress for my cousin’s daughter’s graduation, I thought it would be perfect. Yet when I downloaded the photos, I was surprised that the dress seemed so short. In fact, that evening I tried it on with my dress extender and liked it loads better which you can see on Instagram.

Yet there’s a part of me, who doesn’t want to be ashamed of my legs whether they be pale, old or any such adjective. Maybe if you didn’t know my age, you wouldn’t think twice about the length? So here I stand with questions about my outfits just like every woman does.

How You Could Change This Outfit

Obviously we can address the length of the dress issue. There are many casual, t-shirt dresses that are perfect for women of any age and size. You can find them in all kinds of colors or even prints.

The other aspect is you don’t need a heavy jacket in most parts of the country now. Our day happened to be chilly, but a kimono would lighten up the look.

What Makes this Work

It’s definitely a casual look with the denim jacket and sneakers. I made the conscious decision to keep my accessories at a minimum and therefore selected statement earrings. If you’re looking for a bigger earring that isn’t so heavy then this pair or this pair can fit that bill.

Interesting Tidbit

Let’s talk the clear purse trend. I’ve seen this on a couple of bloggers, and I wasn’t so sure how I would like it personally. But then when I was at our local boutique, Trendz, I was given the opportunity to try this one. And the verdict? I’m hooked!! It came with a blue inner bag which I’ve used too. However, I usually have my “goodies” in this bright pink one. It’s certainly easier to find everything now.

Why Nancy Wore This Outfit

Nancy wore these pants because they have pink in them to match the top. These pants have been such a go to for Nancy since she purchased them 2 years ago. Since they have so many colors in them, they just seem to work with everything. They are also such a great weight for wearing during these times when it’s not too hot yet, it’s not real cold either.

How You Could Change This Outfit

Yet if you still aren’t convinced that you need a pair of print pants, then let’s talk other options. White jeans would make the color of this top pop wonderfully. Of course black jeans would be lovely too since the pink top is nice and bright.

What Makes this Work

Even though we were styling for a casual day, I think the peep toe booties add a a modern flair to the outfit. That and the ruffles on the sleeves. Just like ruffle sleeves on a normal t-shirt, it’s the details that can elevate any item.

Interesting Tidbit

This silver chain of the necklace is super versatile because it has an adjustable feature where the length can be changed to match the neckline of the top. I’m not the greatest at making my written descriptions make sense, so here is an example of the same kind of idea in the bracelet version.

Why Charlotte Wore This Outfit

My mom chose to go with a progressive color scheme–going from light to medium to dark of the same color. The choker blouse is actually blush, the jeans are a medium muted orange, while the short sleeve cardigan is rust.  She chose the v-neck cardigan to showcase the teardrop opening since it was chilly this day, so a second layer was needed. Her wearing these multi-strand beads as her necklace were a shoe in because they mirrored the same colors.

How You Could Change This Outfit

If your idea of casual is wearing blue jeans, then that could be an easy change.

Another option would be to vary the proportion of this outfit with a longer topper. I know I’m not the only one who takes a sweater or jacket into shops and restaurants in the summer months.

What Makes this Work

I like that my mom is wearing this cardigan with other outfits. It’s part of a set that came with a maxi dress she’s worn on the blog before. I’m a huge fan of storing the pieces of our sets apart. By saying that I mean, hang the sweater with other toppers and the dress with other dresses. When you see these items alone, you always remember it’s part of a set. However, if you hang them together, you aren’t as apt to remember each piece when you are looking for individual items.

Interesting Tidbit

These jeans are actually considered leggings because there is no zipper. This, of course, can be challenging when trying to get them on and off. Companies often call this jeggings if you’ve ever wondered about that term. There are blue jean versions and colored versions.

Tips & Tricks

Many of the choker tops seem to be very low cut. You can see how Nancy added a cami under her top because of that issue. I certainly could have also, but obviously my glasses must have been super dirty when I checked the outfit in the mirror, ha ha! But don’t let that fact put you off to trying one. A camisole doesn’t have to be too hot if you choose a silky one.

Since this is what I’d consider a trendy item, I think it’s a perfect opportunity to scour the sales and even check out the young girl shops. Just pretend you’re shopping for your daughter if you feel uncomfortable. Which you shouldn’t because like I said in my Instagram post recently, there isn’t a tag in the clothing that says what age you can be to wear it.
