Color with Baby Steps: How to Add Color to an Outfit Part 2

How to add color to an outfit was the question posed by a reader who was worried about how too much color would be too wild for her. That gave the three of us the idea to start adding color with baby steps to a neutral outfit. Charlotte gave us the first look with just accessories. Now here is Lesley with another element. Then I’m showing other inexpensive tricks.

Quote of the day: “Sometimes our light goes out but is blown into flame by another human being. Each of us owes deepest thanks to those who have rekindled this light.” Albert Schweitzer

Lesley even shares “For four years I worked in a job I could only wear black or white top and black pants. This included no stripes and no prints, just solids.  I did assert my individually with scarfs & jewelry. but let me tell you I was bored and when I left that job I jumped back in to color in a big way.  I would buy any piece in any and every color except black or white.”
Yet she understands the hesitation in adding colors to a wardrobe, so Lesley will give her rationale below.

Lesley’s advice: “For those of you who are timid with color, I suggest starting with your favorite color. Plus remember the awe you experience when you see a rainbow. That’s why you should give colors a try.”

Wearing color seems perfect for the summer. Just because you want to wear a black dress doesn’t mean you can’t incorporate some color with the extras. Lesley is upping the ante of Charlotte’s idea by adding in not only accessories but also colorful shoes.

In Lesley’s words: “I pulled a purse with many colors on a black background.  This would be a good way to dip your toes into wearing some color.  If you’re feeling brave, wade a bit deeper and choose one of the colors in the bag and make your feet twinkle.  Colored shoes give a special feel to your walk. You strut rather then just walk.
If you’re still timid remember that your feet are often hidden so it is an easy way to incorporate color to your outfit. With this look, I’ve used shoes and a purse that match which can make you feel safer.  Colored shoes are fun and can often be found while thrifting.”

More Thoughts on Baby Steps

Since the focus for this week is using baby steps on how to add color to an outfit, Lesley thought she would show the outfit with and without the necklace. Earrings are always a great way to start since they are smaller in proportion to the entire outfit. And most bracelets aren’t as in your face either.

The bling that Lesley is wearing was all designed by her daughter Richlyn who joined us on a blog shoot when she was here visiting.

Dark Backgrounds

If you don’t always love the contrast of color against a white background, you might explore the darker backgrounds then. There are many dark florals every season. Or finding embroidered items on a black or blue background can be just as pretty.

Heck even Lesley’s shoes seem less bright since they have the black around the heels of the foot.

Here are some dark florals items that could be a great way to start incorporating color into your looks.

The Little Black Dress

We all know the adage that the LBD should be a basic in our closet. Since it’s a neutral that most people feel comfortable wearing, it’s a great option for the idea of how to add color to an outfit.
If the bright colors seems too much of a contrast, then the darker blues or burgundies could be a great starting point. Remember, you won’t know until you try!!

My Goal

Thank you for visiting my space on the internet. I like to showcase how it’s never too late to look great for women of any age, size or working with any budget.
I feel I’m here to help move beyond the fashion rules of yesterday and evolve. Style and clothes are made to give you joy. Not cause us stress because we are worried about what other’s think.

My hope is that you get ideas and inspirations from Charlotte, Lesley and myself. It’s not about copying what we wear, but about using what you already have and updating items along the way.
Most of all it’s getting us to think differently and dare I say, have fun?
