Colorful Summer Style: Tote Bag Ideas for a Casual Day

Summer seems like the perfect time for tote bag ideas. Women pick a purse or handbag for many reasons. They are one of those things that work for anyone since there is no “fit” factor. Plus they are extremely functional yet can be inspirational also.

Quote of the day: “Stay away from what might have been, and look at what can be.” Marsha Petrie Sue

This is not a sponsored post, but I am showcasing a friend’s etsy shop for these tote bag ideas. My friend is Loretta from my Midlife Matters FB group and she started sewing masks last year. Then I saw her make a couple of tote bags (many of them reversible) and I figured it was time to give her some love. I bought one for myself and ended up liking it so much, I thought I’d buy different ones for Lesley and Charlotte as Mother’s Day gifts.
FYI, you can click Loretta’s contact button to ask her for certain colors for a tote. It’s wonderful to be able to get what you want this way. (Make sure to favorite her shop while you’re there).

Since the three of us would all have similar items, I figured it could be a great idea to blog about tote bag ideas and how to use your favorites to style an outfit. You can see how Lesley styled her outfit around the colors in her tote also whereas I went with a contrasting look.

Charlotte and Tote Bag Ideas

My mom used her blue print tote bag as a color combination inspiration for this casual summer outfit. BTW, the tote is reversible to an all blue material which makes it even more versatile if you tend to match your purse to what you are wearing.
This isn’t a new color combination for Charlotte and we’ve shown other ways to style lime green on the blog in the past. Yet having a purse or tote with these colors already in it, can remind you of pieces in your closet.

Yet we don’t always have to match exactly to our totes or purses. I consider the lime green in this print to be an accent color. So you could grab this tote to go with many of your summer looks.

Colorful Accessories

Summer is the perfect time to break out the more colorful accessories. That’s why my mom grabbed her Audra Style earrings (this is the Stud Muffin style).

Funny story about this necklace. Do you remember this style from the 80’s? This necklace actually used to be mine (it was a gift from a family I babysat) and when I went off to college, I left it at home. Which is how my mom got her hands on it and confiscated it! (She will tell you that I didn’t want them but that’s not how I remember it, haha.)
There was a different kind of clasp with these beads (which my mom still has also), but for today, she used a interchangeable enhancer clasp.

Insider tip: This interchangeable enhancer clasp can be used to add a brooch or pendant to an existing necklace also like Charlotte has done here. I’ve also used it for scarves instead of a hair elastic.

I had quite the response to my earlier thoughts on capri pants. The younger women just don’t understand when they write those articles about what you should or shouldn’t wear as we get older. Trust me when I say, I don’t think we have to cover up if we don’t want to, but if you want to wear longer shorts or capris, it doesn’t have to be a fashion mistake.
BTW, keep your eyes peeled for some more outfit ideas talking about capris.

Insider tip: Can’t find the right length capris (or even shorts)? Then consider cutting off a pair of pants. Make them the length you want without the hassle of searching every store.

My mom commented that she likes to have all different colors and sizes for her purses and totes. While bigger totes are great for everything including the kitchen sink, they can make it tough to find what you are looking for.
That’s why I love organizing even my smaller purses with small “bags” which I’ve blogged about in the past.

Insider tip: Lesley has a bag layering concept that she explains in this short video.

My Goal

Thank you for visiting my space on the internet. I like to showcase how it’s never too late to look great for women of any age, size or working with any budget.
I feel I’m here to help move beyond the fashion rules of yesterday and evolve. Style and clothes are made to give you joy. Not cause us stress because we are worried about what other’s think.

My hope is that you get ideas and inspirations from Charlotte, Lesley and myself. It’s not about copying what we wear, but about using what you already have and updating items along the way.
Most of all it’s getting us to think differently and dare I say, have fun?
