Have you ever thought about pulling out a cowboy hat and incorporating it into your everyday outfits? Well, let me tell you, you don’t have to be headed to a rodeo or ranch to pull off this fun and fashionable accessory. Cowboy hat outfits can be stylish, playful, and even city-chic—if you know how to style them just right.
Quote of the day: “The most effective form of learning is PRACTICE.” Anonymous
When Lesley suggested we style cowboy hat outfits, I nearly dropped down dead. Seriously, she is not one to embrace the cowboy/western trend even though I’ve twisted her arm in the past.
So I have no idea what came over her to ask for this topic, but I was happy to give it a go.
Hey, don’t get me wrong, even living in Colorado for 30 years never made me into a cowgirl. But I have grown to love cowboy boots now, especially when they come in fun colors.
On a recent outing, we put together two looks that showcase how versatile a cowboy hat can be. I styled a more traditional cowboy hat outfit with nods to classic Western style, while Lesley titled hers a “Scottsdale Cowgirl” look—less boots and spurs, more modern flair with a bit of desert luxe.
Let’s break down both styles and hopefully inspire you to grab a hat of your own. Even if you’re not a fan of the western vibe, just think of these hats as a hat with different shaping.

Jodie: Traditional Cowboy Hat Outfit – Classic with a Twist
Let’s start with the more traditional take on cowboy style. And trust me, it’s easier to pull off than you might think.
This look was all about celebrating the roots of Western wear but giving it a modern, polished twist. The cowboy hat is the obvious starting point.
But instead of going full-on rodeo queen, I balanced the look with classic pieces like a white button-down shirt and a cozy, candy-striped cardigan that feels more mountain lodge than cattle drive.
Let’s talk about the jeans. I chose a dark wash with a slight flare because it nods to that bootcut Western tradition without feeling dated. Paired with silver boots? Let’s just say I was channeling a little bit of Dolly Parton energy (and who doesn’t want more of that?).

Outfit Details:
-I never understood how turquoise and red went so well together until I studied Southwestern turquoise jewelry. Many times, they are paired together and look great.
-Who remembers button covers? I kept these from my youngster days and love how they added more bling to the look. Find some for yourself here.
-I also only tucked half my blouse. While many women shake their heads at this idea, it is very modern.
-But my favorite part might just be the bandana. This little red scarf tied around the neck not only adds color and charm but also brings the whole cowboy vibe together.
Styling tip: Not all cowboy hats are created equal. For instance, on my hat, the brim is small and not as pointed as usual.
Heck, they come in all types of materials and colors now, so don’t feel roped in (haha) to the traditional ones.

Lesley: Scottsdale Cowgirl – Modern Western Vibes
Lesley took the reins on another cowboy hat outfit look, and this one is what she lovingly calls “Scottsdale Cowgirl.” Think Arizona resort meets Western-inspired fashion. It’s chic, easy-breezy, and totally wearable for women of any age.
Doesn’t she look fabulous?
This look takes Western inspiration and runs it through a modern, vacation-ready filter. The white shirtdress/tunic layered over shorts is brilliant on its own.
Then she layered a turquoise jacket on top for that eye-catching color pop. I love how turquoise is the common color we both chose for this idea.
Instead of cowboy boots (which would also have looked great), Lesley went with neutral toeless ankle bootie for a more refined, polished take. It keeps the outfit from veering too literal and lets the accessories shine.

Outfit Details:
-That belt adds a bit of shaping to the overall look, along with incorporating traditional Southwestern patterns.
-Even Lesley’s hat has Southwestern decoration on it, with the hatband having turquoise on it.
-Speaking of Lesley’s hat-it is a straw version that is perfect for the warmer months.
Styling tip: If you just can’t wrap your head around wearing a cowboy hat (man, I’m just full of the puns today), then turquoise jewelry is a great option to give off that SW vibe.
And on that point, not all turquoise jewelry has to have a Western vibe. We’ve talked about what to wear with it for your reading pleasure.
Why You Should Try Cowboy Hat Outfits
Now, you might be thinking, “Sure, it looks cute on them, but I don’t live in the SW.” I like to think we shouldn’t be restricted in our outfits by where we live. I’ve heard over and over that living in warmer weather makes it easier to wear brighter colors. But I hope you dress for your personality and moods, not for your location per se.
Weather, yes…limitations on what you like, no.
Cowboy hat outfits are all about expressing a little personality. Whether you’re a city dweller or a small-town gal, adding Western flair can make you feel confident, bold, and a little playful. Plus, cowboy hats are practical! They keep the sun off your face and can hide a bad hair day.
Here are a few ways to ease into the trend:
- Start small: Try a straw or felt hat in a neutral color. It’ll go with everything.
- Add one Western element: Maybe it’s the hat one day, a bandana the next, or some tooled leather accessories.
- Pair with everyday basics: A cowboy hat looks great with jeans and a tee, a simple dress, or even a blazer for contrast.
- Mix styles: Don’t feel like you need to commit to a full Western outfit. The beauty of today’s fashion is that mixing genres creates the most interesting looks.

Final Thoughts
Cowboy hat outfits don’t have to scream “yeehaw!”—unless you want them to. With just a few key pieces, you can bring a little Western spirit to your wardrobe in a way that feels totally you. Whether you want to dress like a traditional cowgirl like me, or lean into that resort-ready, “Scottsdale Cowgirl” vibe like Lesley, there are plenty of stylish ways to rock cowboy hat outfits.
And let’s be honest—sometimes you just want to feel a little fierce and fabulous. A cowboy hat can do that for you.
Style tip: It’s never too late to try something new with your style. Whether you’re riding off into the sunset or just strolling through the farmer’s market, why not add a little Western twist to your day?
