Denim Vest 2 (With a Dress)

Denim Vest for the 50, 60 & 70 year old woman

Denim Vest for the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s: With a Dress

Quote of the day: “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream…” C.S. Lewis

There are many good reasons to wear a vest over your dress, for example if the dress: has spaghetti straps and you don’t want your bra to show, or it doesn’t have much shaping, or the dress could seem too dressy, or the print of the dress seems overwhelming, or even if it’s a little tight. Of course you could just wear the vest over a dress because it’s fun and interesting too! For our examples, you can see we all chose short sleeved dresses, but of varying lengths. My dress is above the knee, Nancy’s dress is at the knee and mom’s dress is below the knee. Our first project with our denim vests was a little unusual by styling it over a jacket (here).

50’s Outfit: Thanks to one of my knitting friends, Jean Ann, who also loves to bead. She made this wonderful bracelet!

I recently bought this dress at Old Navy, but, of course, they are sold out of it already! The dress is actually quite perfect because it’s two layers, so it’s not see through, yet it’s lightweight!  I especially like a flared dress because of the fact that it has good coverage when you sit down!

60’s Outfit: With all of the flowers on Nancy’s dress, we decided to forgo a necklace, but we had to add a little sparkle by including this pin on the vest! The blue earrings are meant to compliment the pin!

These are my favorite shoes that Nancy got at Target a couple years ago. With a little heel, but it’s a wedge, they are walk able yet very stylish!!

70’s Outfit: This dress is made out of t-shirt material and is very comfy. Since mom made it herself, notice there are pockets, which everyone loves!

It’s a fact that “they” say older women shouldn’t wear a pastel color near the face, so the denim vest is a great solution to this, don’t you think?

Check out these dresses—wouldn’t they look great under your vest? My fave is the Asos one—so different (Hey mom—maybe you could make me one like this with that gold fringe material?)!!

  • Kathleen McDermott

Great looks. The vests add such a fun, hip touch to the feminine dresses. I’ll definitely do this!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Right? It’s not much different than all the younger women wearing a denim jacket over their dresses now—it’s just better for the way hotter weather!!

  • sue

Denim vests are so versatile Jodie yet I’ve never had one! It is always on my list but never get around to buying one – maybe this season! You all look great and thanks for the weekly inspiration. I love the CS Lewis quote!

    • Jodie Filogomo

It’s funny how we seem to like denim so much, yet we only really consider it in the jeans form—I can relate because I just bought my vest this year!
I have to admit, it’s been worn a bunch already!!

  • Happinessatmidlife

I love all the ways you ladies styled the denim vest! I have one and don’t wear it much (especially with sleepless because it makes my arms even bigger).

Thank you for being a part of TBT Fashion link up and hope to see you soon!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Alice!! I can’t believe you hardly wear your vest—I bet it looks great on you. I think you should put it on the blog and let us readers decide (because your arms are not big!!)
      Happy Monday!!

  • Kristin & Megan

That last Forever 21 number is too cute for words!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Isn’t is just the epitome of summer dresses? Thanks for reading you guys!!

  • Such fashionable ladies, as always! Thanks so much for joining us at #FridayFrivolity this week!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Lisa!! It’s so nice of you to check in!!

  • Abby Castro

Denim vests are a great idea for layering over dresses. Good alternative for a denim jacket when it gets too hot!

Abby | Life in the Fash Lane

    • Jodie Filogomo

I so agree Abby—sometimes even the vest can get too hot (which always amazes me since it’s such a little piece!!)
      Thanks so much for reading!!

  • sugarkisses

I really like 1 & 3. I have a denim vest, I’ll have to check my closet to see what I can pair it with. Thanks for the inspiration. I would love for you to linkup on my Sunday’s Best Linkup.

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Hi Rhonda!!
The vests really are quite versatile in my opinion!!
I’d love to link up with your linkup…I tried the, but couldn’t reach your blog—-did I spell it wrong?

      • sugarkisses

Hi Jodie. My blog is actually Mother 2 Mother. Here’s the linkup: Looking forward to you joining the Sunday’s Best family.

  • Three very pretty looks! I like the different colors with the denim. Nancy’s wedges are very cute. Thanks for reminding me it’s time to pull out my vest as a completer piece because it is starting to become too warm for my denim jackets. Have a wonderful weekend, Jodie. 🙂

Thanks for linking up with Fabulous Friday! Hope to see you back next week.

Jennie – A Pocketful of Polka Dots

    • Jodie Filogomo

Although I love vests at any time of year, you’re absolutely right—they are cooler than the jackets. Thus so perfect for the warmer weather, Jennie!!
      Happy Weekend!

  • Kreativk Net

All three outfits look awesome for the summer and I like how the denim vest makes the dresses look casual and funky!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Katrin—I really appreciate the compliment!!

  • Thanks for linking up to Top of the World Style.

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Of course!!! 🙂

  • Definitely gives the vest a whole different look. I’m not a fan of vests on me. I like the look of them on the hanger but even as a teenager when they were in style I never got into them.

    • Jodie Filogomo

That’s so interesting Michelle…..but that’s the whole idea of fashion—to each his own, right? If we all liked and wore the same things, we’d look like the stepford wives!!!
      Thanks for reading!!

  • ADA

Oh I was looking forward to seeing this post Jodie. I love a denim vest. It looks so cool over a dress and makes the outfit youthful and fun. All three of you have created great outfits and I love both pairs of coral shoes you ladies have. This item proves that age is just a number and some pieces are timeless, even a trendy and modern denim vest – the cool cousin of a denim jacket lol. I think I will try it next over the baby blue dress I actually have on, in today’s post. 😉 I think it would look cool, let me know?

    • Jodie Filogomo

I love how you call the denim vest a cool cousin of the jacket—brilliant Ada!!
Thanks for being so positive about our looks—I really appreciate it!

  • Love all these looks. You ladies are definitely rocking the vest! I really need to wear mine more.

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Wow…thanks for stopping by Jo-Lynne!!
I love how denim is so stylish lately—so I’m trying to get my money’s worth out of it! Of course, will denim ever go out of style? We’ll see!!

  • Thanks for reminding me to wear my jean vest! I bought one last season and I don’t think I’ve ever worn it once!

    • Jodie Filogomo

It’s funny how things get put in the closet and forgotten, right? I usually try to wear what I just bought, right away—but it’s hard when it’s for a different season. That’s actually how I came up with the idea of wearing it over a jacket (since I’d seen it done with fur vests)—I bought this in March and wanted to wear it right away!! Of course, since I didn’t get around to the post series until now, it seems kinda silly—but over the dresses works better!!
Can’t wait to see yours, Amy!!

  • You are so right about all of the reasons for wearing a vest with a dress but I really liked the last one … “because it’s fun and interesting”. Isn’t that what personal style is all about? I feel like a broken record as I say this once again but you all look fantastic, as usual. Thank you for adding your looks to the Powers The Flower link-up.

    • Jodie Filogomo

I think as fashion bloggers, we are singing to the choir to each other—fashion can be fun & interesting.
And it’s so nice when you see other women embodying it!!
And trust me—we never get tired of hearing compliments (although I love it when people disagree, too—since everyone likes different things!!)

  • Carrie @ Curly Crafty Mom

I am so into my light wash denim vest this summer. I haven’t tried it with my floral dress yet. I just love the blue dress you are wearing, Jodie and how you added a scarf to the look!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks so much Carrie!! I bet yours would look great with your floral dress–kinda like PB & J!!

  • RedTagChicLA

Nothing can beat a denim vest for versatility! Love your darker denim vs. the lighter hue!

Come check out the 3rd installment of my collab with Los Angeles based TOBI – I’m sure you’ll love it too!!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Rebecca!! They are so versatile, since denim’s a neutral, right?

  • Versatilestylebytracey

I love wearing a denim vest over a dress as it makes it more casual when it’s too warm for a jean jacket. These looks are all great and show the versatility of doing so.

    • Jodie Filogomo

That’s it exactly!! They’re just as perfect as a jacket, but not as much coverage!! You’re one smart cookie, Tracey!!

  • Amy D. Christensen

Great choices, Jodie. I love your blue on blue, but every outfit looks sweet with those denim vests. I’ll have a pic of mine styled with a maxi skirt coming up in a few weeks. Great minds think alike! Ha, ha. Love Nancy’s red shoes and yes the vest brings life to your mom’s face. I think the yellow, because it is so pale would wash your beautiful mom out, so the vest brings color and vibrancy to her face. Love the looks! – Amy

    • Jodie Filogomo

Of course the vest with a maxi—I was at mom’s styling our maxis for our future series…and I almost had her wear it again because it’s such a natural!!
Thanks for your nice thoughts—I really appreciate it!!

  • Dawn Lucy

Okay can you believe I don’t have a denim vest? I know … hello, Dawn Lucy?! On my must have list now and can’t wait to wear it over a dress! Thanks for linking up, Dear!

    Dawn Lucy

    • Jodie Filogomo

I know the feeling….we’re all about the denim jackets, yet the vest are basically the same thing!

      • Dawn Lucy

Right? And by the way, thanks for linking up with the MRS link up too! You rock, Jodie!

        • Jodie Filogomo

  • Terri Webster Schrandt

    Absolutely adorable, Jodie!!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Awwww, Terri….that’s so nice, thanks!!

  • CathyLynchLawdanski

Love Mom’s dress with her vest and Nancy’s shoes are so cute. Great styling!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks so much Cathy!!
I am happy with how these turned out!!

  • This is my favorite way to wear a vest during the summer. The vest looks great over all 3 of these dresses!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Michelle—since I just got this vest a couple months ago, I’ve never done this—-It’s definitely going to be one of my favorite ways to layer this summer!!

  • I like your outfit the best here with the addition of the scarf.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Suzanne–I thought it was a little too much blue without it…besides we were going out to eat and I always freeze in the restaurants!!

  • Laura

I just love the summery feel of all your dresses! Your blue one was a great purchase and will compliment practically any color you pair with it, Nancy’s dress is fun with the bright floral print, and your mother’s dress is such a happy (but not too bright) color! Your mother is so talented!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Laura—I admit I hardly ever shopped at Old Navy in the past, but my last couple of purchases have really impressed me!

  • Wow this is all lovely and summery! I love the bright colours in today’s outfits all of the dresses are stunning!
    Gemma x

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Gemma!! Just like you—I do love a dress!!

  • I loves denim vest!!!!!!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Jaymie—they’re almost as versatile as a denim jacket maybe?

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks so much Brooke!

  • Nikki Gwin

I like all 3 looks! Great job.
    🙂 gwingal

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Nikki!!

  • Jean Ann

Love your outfit the peach and blue are great together! Maybe a vest like your moms would work better with Nancy’s dress. Glad you like the bracelet it’s one I really liked also.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Maybe you’re right JeanAnn—a shorter vest to give the illusion of a waist?
But really, I love all of your bracelets–especially because they are made by you!! XOXO

  • Judy Gramith

The first time I remember seeing a vest paired with a dress was after the movie Annie Hall ( Woody Allen) came out.
I LOVE a vest. I have a lot of variations of vests and think the are really versatile. I even like wearing them as a top with just a cami underneath in the warmer months.
This look is great on all of you but Charlotte’s look is my favorite. Does she have any shorter ,chunky, colorful necklaces? ( a big ol owl would be really fun!!)

    • Jodie Filogomo

I think vests are wonderful too Judy!! I actually don’t have that many right now—I guess I was always wearing jackets at work —but they certainly are versatile!!
Of course my mother has a ton of any kind of necklace—definitely a more colorful one would have stood out better with this outfit, huh? (Maybe I should do a series on this is what we wore and this is how I could make it better?)
I actually saw that movie with my mom—but I only remember because she always talks about it—it didn’t make an impression on me at the time!! I’ll have to look it up to see!!

  • donnaduck

Love Nancy’s shoes, but I can’t get into her particular dress w/ the vest- maybe it’s the cut of the dress? I like your look the best, Jodi. And I love how you put a scarf around the neckline of the vest. Kind of dresses it up, but not too much. Your mom looks adorable in her denim vest! Definitely like dresses under a vest more than jackets under a vest!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Donna—thank so much for your insights—I love hearing them…especially when they differ, so I can learn how others see things!!
You’re right in that Nancy’s dress is a shift dress, whereas mom’s & mine have a waistband—I never even thought about that!
The dress under a vest is definitely more conventional than a blazer—and it probably makes more sense!!
      Happy Thursday!!

  • Mother Daughter

I like how you think outside the box. I do like the like you have here, and love your shoes.

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks so much!!
I love that the chunky heels are in style now—they are so easy to walk in for long periods!!

  • Queen of Rods

Love your peach accessories and bracelet 🙂

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Janet!! My outfit seemed too blue without some other color!!

  • Bernadette Laganella

I often wear a vest the way you styled Nancy. I think a vest breaks up too much detail.

    • Jodie Filogomo

You’re so right Bernadette!! Sometimes a print can seem overwhelming!!
      Thanks for chiming in!!
