Let’s Get Dressed Up with our Hats
Quote of the day: “You must expect great things of yourself before you can do them.”
Hats may be one of those items that you don’t really consider when getting dressed up for a fancy event. But if you recently went to a Kentucky Derby party, maybe you did!! Of course many of the hats traditionally worn at the Kentucky Derby are quite elaborate! And I’m sure most of us wouldn’t wear those kinds of hats just anywhere.
And there really are so many reasons to wear a hat that I didn’t even get to discuss in the last post where we wore them casually. Shading your eyes and covering up some crazy hair are two of my favorite reasons to throw on a hat. But what about you? I’d love to hear your opinion in the comments below!
Jodie’s (50’s) Outfit: I added my black hat to my dress and heels for a fancier look.
You may remember this vest from our project about shopping as an exercise for our brain! I had one reader suggest wearing it over something with sleeves and another suggest wearing it over a dress, so I tried both at once! Do you like it better this way?
For some reason, I’ve been loving the longer vests lately, maybe because I always love a topper. If you seem to be drawn to this silhouette also, then you might like one in black & white, or a bright pink.
I did keep with the blue theme for my earrings and shoes!!
These earrings can be changed 4 different ways which makes them so versatile. I have to admit that a new pair of earrings can add so much fun to your look. Have you been to Target recently? They have some of the funnest earrings around. And even though I don’t need any more earrings, I did splurge and come home with 2 new pairs–these & these. I almost bought these and these also, but I figured enough was enough.
This dress is a recreation that my talented mother made for me. It was a longer, bigger dress that someone had given to her. So she took it apart and made it into this one!
It’s a short sleeved dress, but it was a little chilly this day, so I layered a t-shirt under it. This has been one of my favorite tricks lately when I don’t want to cover up the piece with a cardigan or jacket. The three of us did this with our t-shirt dresses recently, if you want to check it out!
Since my earrings were quite long, I thought I’d forgo wearing a necklace. But instead I added a pin right above the buttons.
And I can’t forget to mention my shoes!!
I found these shoes about 4 years ago and was so impressed that the fabric on them matched some of the fabric on this coat! Therefore I had to buy them, although I rarely wear them together!!

Nancy’s (60’s) Outfit: Nancy is not one to wear hats very often, but she did have a couple to choose from for this dressy outfit!
This hat was actually made by Charlotte and it matches the purse that my mom also made for Nancy! Nancy carried this purse with her when we went on our Vegas trip for Christmas and got quite a few compliments on it!
I know Nancy usually adds in her sparkly accessories with this tunic since it has bling all over it.
But I wanted to change it up, so I had her wear her pearls. After writing the article for Sixty + Me about wearing your pearls more, I’ve been trying hard to do just that! So Nancy put on a pearl necklace & bracelet just for me! Doesn’t it look nice?
Nancy used this purse in our print mixing post were we included a print purse in our outfits!
Putting together our outfits for that particular post, really made me realize how I tend to gravitate towards solid colored purses most of the time. Yet print purses can add so much fun to an outfit with very little effort. In fact while I was at Target the other day, I had to talk myself out of this cute one!
The other part of this outfit of Nancy’s that might look familiar is her tunic! She’s worn it twice on the blog already, here & here.
This tunic has become one of her favorite pieces, and I think it’s nice she’s getting a lot of wear from it! Besides, now you can see other options for your favorite tunic!! For this outfit, Nancy opted for her Traveler’s Pants from Chicos which are her most loved when she goes on her trips!
Since I know from all the comments that you all love your leggings, I have to assume that you have plenty of tunics to go with them! But, just in case, you’ve been searching for others, I found this colorful one, or this darker one!

Charlotte’s (70’s) Outfit: My mom found this hat in her closet from the 1960’s. So we can basically say it’s my age, LOL!
You might not keep all of your clothing items for over 50 years, but if you did, you’d find every style comes back around, right? Not that I’m suggesting you never throw anything away!! But if you have kept some of your older items, I’d love to know which ones?
My mom picked this print dress to go with her hat! I love that it’s so colorful and that scalloped neckline is my favorite!
Don’t you think floral dresses can be the perfect dress for the warmer months? I would be so surprised if each and every one of you didn’t already have at least one in your closet. For those of you who are looking for another, may I show you a muted one or a brighter one? It seems like with all of the graduations and weddings coming up in May and June, that these dresses would get worn a lot!
I know I was just talking about cute and stylish earrings, and look at what my mom created.
These are actually a tassel that mom bought at JoAnn Fabrics and then used her pearl earring stud as the base for them! Isn’t that so creative? Of course, if you just want to buy your earrings already good to go, I found some fabulous multi colored ones, pink ones, or black ones.
As for the footwear for this outfit, I chose mom’s nude shoes.
I know her first instinct is to match one of the colors from the dress, but there’s so much going on with the colorful dress and hat, that I thought we’d be better off with less focus on the shoes. Nude shoes really are the most versatile color to have in your closet behind black. Even though I love wearing color, I think my nude or tan shoes get the most wear value.
Let me show you just a couple of selections that will work for any outfit. Here’s one with a chunkier heel and patent leather! If you prefer wedges, then this pair would work wonderfully. These are a pair like Nancy and I have that are truly very easy to walk in because of the ankle strap and less than 3 inch heel. But if you’d rather have flats, then these are just for you!
Hats really can be a fun and stylish accessory no matter where you are going! You may stand out from the crowd by wearing one, but then again, you are a stand out!
Thanks to one and all of you for your support. It means more than you know!
