Let’s Get Dressed Up with our Hats

Quote of the day: “You must expect great things of yourself before you can do them.”

Hats may be one of those items that you don’t really consider when getting dressed up for a fancy event. But if you recently went to a Kentucky Derby party, maybe you did!! Of course many of the hats traditionally worn at the Kentucky Derby are quite elaborate! And I’m sure most of us wouldn’t wear those kinds of hats just anywhere.

And there really are so many reasons to wear a hat that I didn’t even get to discuss in the last post where we wore them casually. Shading your eyes and covering up some crazy hair are two of my favorite reasons to throw on a hat. But what about you? I’d love to hear your opinion in the comments below!

Jodie’s (50’s) Outfit: I added my black hat to my dress and heels for a fancier look.

You may remember this vest from our project about shopping as an exercise for our brain! I had one reader suggest wearing it over something with sleeves and another suggest wearing it over a dress, so I tried both at once! Do you like it better this way?

For some reason, I’ve been loving the longer vests lately, maybe because I always love a topper. If you seem to be drawn to this silhouette also, then you might like one in black & white, or a bright pink.

I did keep with the blue theme for my earrings and shoes!!

These earrings can be changed 4 different ways which makes them so versatile. I have to admit that a new pair of earrings can add so much fun to your look. Have you been to Target recently? They have some of the funnest earrings around. And even though I don’t need any more earrings, I did splurge and come home with 2 new pairs–these & these. I almost bought these and these also, but I figured enough was enough.

This dress is a recreation that my talented mother made for me. It was a longer, bigger dress that someone had given to her. So she took it apart and made it into this one!

It’s a short sleeved dress, but it was a little chilly this day, so I layered a t-shirt under it. This has been one of my favorite tricks lately when I don’t want to cover up the piece with a cardigan or jacket. The three of us did this with our t-shirt dresses recently, if you want to check it out!

Since my earrings were quite long, I thought I’d forgo wearing a necklace. But instead I added a pin right above the buttons.

And I can’t forget to mention my shoes!!

I found these shoes about 4 years ago and was so impressed that the fabric on them matched some of the fabric on this coat! Therefore I had to buy them, although I rarely wear them together!!

But blue print shoes seem to go with everything if you want my opinion! Like these if you’re looking for a flatter summery shoe, or these if you still love wearing heels!!

Nancy’s (60’s) Outfit: Nancy is not one to wear hats very often, but she did have a couple to choose from for this dressy outfit!

This hat was actually made by Charlotte and it matches the purse that my mom also made for Nancy! Nancy carried this purse with her when we went on our Vegas trip for Christmas and got quite a few compliments on it!

Style for Women over 60

I know Nancy usually adds in her sparkly accessories with this tunic since it has bling all over it.

But I wanted to change it up, so I had her wear her pearls. After writing the article for Sixty + Me about wearing your pearls more, I’ve been trying hard to do just that! So Nancy put on a pearl necklace & bracelet just for me! Doesn’t it look nice?

Style & Fashion for Women over 60

Nancy used this purse in our print mixing post were we included a print purse in our outfits!

Putting together our outfits for that particular post, really made me realize how I tend to gravitate towards solid colored purses most of the time. Yet print purses can add so much fun to an outfit with very little effort. In fact while I was at Target the other day, I had to talk myself out of this cute one!

If you want me to tempt you with a couple of options then check out this one for a small version or this one that’s larger!

Matching hats & purses that are handmade

The other part of this outfit of Nancy’s that might look familiar is her tunic! She’s worn it twice on the blog already, here & here.

This tunic has become one of her favorite pieces, and I think it’s nice she’s getting a lot of wear from it! Besides, now you can see other options for your favorite tunic!! For this outfit, Nancy opted for her Traveler’s Pants from Chicos which are her most loved when she goes on her trips!

Since I know from all the comments that you all love your leggings, I have to assume that you have plenty of tunics to go with them! But, just in case, you’ve been searching for others, I found this colorful one, or this darker one!

No matter your age or size, style can be fabulous

Charlotte’s (70’s) Outfit: My mom found this hat in her closet from the 1960’s. So we can basically say it’s my age, LOL!

You might not keep all of your clothing items for over 50 years, but if you did, you’d find every style comes back around, right? Not that I’m suggesting you never throw anything away!! But if you have kept some of your older items, I’d love to know which ones?

Style for Women over 70

My mom picked this print dress to go with her hat! I love that it’s so colorful and that scalloped neckline is my favorite!

Don’t you think floral dresses can be the perfect dress for the warmer months? I would be so surprised if each and every one of you didn’t already have at least one in your closet. For those of you who are looking for another, may I show you a muted one or a brighter one? It seems like with all of the graduations and weddings coming up in May and June, that these dresses would get worn a lot!

How your hat can add sass to an outfit

I know I was just talking about cute and stylish earrings, and look at what my mom created.

These are actually a tassel that mom bought at JoAnn Fabrics and then used her pearl earring stud as the base for them! Isn’t that so creative? Of course, if you just want to buy your earrings already good to go, I found some fabulous multi colored ones, pink ones, or black ones.

Style for older women made easy

As for the footwear for this outfit, I chose mom’s nude shoes.

I know her first instinct is to match one of the colors from the dress, but there’s so much going on with the colorful dress and hat, that I thought we’d be better off with less focus on the shoes. Nude shoes really are the most versatile color to have in your closet behind black. Even though I love wearing color, I think my nude or tan shoes get the most wear value.

Let me show you just a couple of selections that will work for any outfit. Here’s one with a chunkier heel and patent leather! If you prefer wedges, then this pair would work wonderfully. These are a pair like Nancy and I have that are truly very easy to walk in because of the ankle strap and less than 3 inch heel. But if you’d rather have flats, then these are just for you!

Hats really can be a fun and stylish accessory no matter where you are going! You may stand out from the crowd by wearing one, but then again, you are a stand out!

Thanks to one and all of you for your support. It means more than you know!

    • Jodie Filogomo

You’re a fabulous inspiration Judith!! In fact, I just bought another hat yesterday—it’s only a straw one with a pink brim, but still fun!!

  • The Style Crone

The three of you look so stylish in your headwear! Hats always, as you say, make you stand out. The profile of your Mom in her hat is smashing. Thank you so much for sharing with Hat Attack and for spreading the word about the joys of wearing hats!

  • Hannah Adkins

I usually don’t go for hats but I think your mom’s outfit is just too cute. That hat looks awesome on her and she looks beautiful!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I never wore hats before I started blogging, but I have found them to be a super fun accessory—especially when the hair isn’t cooperating!!!
Thanks for the wonderful compliment to my mom—I made sure to forward it to her so she can appreciate it!!

  • You all look fantastic in your hats! I love your shoes Jodie, and your mom’s dress is so pretty. I have been on a bit of a hat-buying spree lately. I didn’t have the confidence to wear them when I was younger but now I love hats, they can really bring an outfit together. Judith (Style Crone) is such an inspiration for me 🙂

    Emma xxx

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks so much Emma!!
I know exactly what you mean by saying you didn’t have the confidence. I was just thinking that when I was younger I just wanted to dress like everyone else. Now I’m willing to be more unique!!

  • Bernadette Laganella

I wish I had saved some of my hats from the 60’s. Your mom looks amazing. I just bought a hat to take with me to France next month. I figured if I was going to the fountainhead of fashion I better have one.

    • Jodie Filogomo

You’re going to France, Bernadette??? What an incredible trip!! The only thing bad about traveling with a hat is they are hard to pack!! But how fun to take one!!
Some of the hats that my mom kept, aren’t really in the greatest shape anymore—I guess everything wears out over time (including us-ha ha). But this one still almost looked like new!! Amazing!!

  • I love the hats on you all, stylishly different yet fitting of each outfit! Love the colors in your moms dress and Nancy’s shoes are fab! Jodie, you look so cute in a hat! I dont wear them much here but they add a great touch to the look! ( and love your shoes!)
    thanks for linking!
    jess xx

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Jess!!
I have been wearing hats way more lately!! And either they are at the stores more, or I’m noticing them more! Heck, I even saw some fun ones at the Botanic Gardens gift shop yesterday!!

  • I never really think about hats when it comes to outfits, but they can look really good. I really like yours!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I’ve only been wearing them recently—but they really are the bestest!!

  • I love hats! I own so many but never ever wear them. If I do, it’s something like what Nancy has on…again. Nancy and I always seem to have the same taste. 😉

    • Jodie Filogomo

You have to break out your hats!! They are the perfect way to add some pizzazz to your everyday outfits!!!

  • You guys look amazing, I adore a hat and my mum always says I have a ‘hat head’ x

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks so much Vicki!!
I like that term–that I have a hat head!! And I think I need to up my collection because they are perfect for covering the hair! 🙂

  • Sharon Duerst

I wear hats when I must…out walking to prevent sun and wind damage. But I take them off as soon as I’m done. They don’t look bad, I just feel silly…need to work on it because the hats in your pictures really complete the looks with style!

    • Jodie Filogomo

And that could be how we were raised—you know, no hats inside and no elbows on the table???
But I do like how they look, and I’d rather keep mine on, so I don’t have to worry about how they made my hair even more crazy!!

      • Sharon Duerst

So true, Jodie! I’m now open to changes I may previously have not noticed I needed or wanted! Your great photos help me see all kinds of fun changes ahead!

  • Austin Hodgens

What about baseball caps? Those are the only hats that ever grace this head. Are they stylish enough? 🙂

    • Jodie Filogomo

Baseball caps are certainly hats, but I think the stylishness depends on the hat!! Do your have any bling? Any texture? Any fun colors?
If not, that could be the issue with the woman thing……..just sayin’

  • 3littleredheads

All of you look amazing! I’ve never been able to pull off wearing a hat.

    • Jodie Filogomo

My husband is the same way….most of them look funny on him! But he has a couple for keeping the sun off his head!!
Sometimes it just takes finding the right style!!

  • Don’t you all look absolutley darling! Hats are such a fun way to accessorize an outfit and each of you look fantastic!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Carmen!!

  • Some super fun outfits. I really love how you added that broach above the buttons on your dress. I would have guessed it was actually part of the dress!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks so much Mary!!

  • So perfectly aligned with the Kentucky Derby! I love seeing people all dressed up with their crazy hats & fascinaters for the races

    • Jodie Filogomo

That would be such a fun party to attend, don’t you think, Michelle?? The clothing, the hats, the drinks…oh, and of course the race!!

  • Living on Cloud Nine

Can I just tell you, you ladies are some of the best looking ladies in hats I have ever seen! My mom adores hats and wears them well as well. You guys just know how to pull off such Chic looks!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Aww…that’s so sweet Andrea! Thanks!!
Maybe I ought to have your mom join in on the fun??!!

  • I love a great hat and as always you ladies pull them off with panache! Your mom’s is my absolute favorite! She looks adorable! Great post!

    • Jodie Filogomo

My mom definitely showed her stuff in these photos, huh, Mary!!
Thanks for saying that because it’ll just make her day!!

  • Love all these hats but totally obsessed with Nancy’s! The colors and textures are amazing. Yay for chic hats!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I think so too, Kathrine!! Now we just have to get her wearing it more, ha ha!!
      Thanks! 🙂

  • Your mom looks great! So springy! Looks like she has a spring in her step too! I see you’re wearing your new vest. Love how you’re focussing on hats. Not many blogs do that. Happy Wednesday ladies!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks so much Julia!!
My mom is in the best health ever—especially considering she’s almost 80!
      She’ll love reading your comment…XOXO

  • I need more hats in my life! Btw, I love how you ladies pose in pics! I am so awkward about it for myself.

    • Jodie Filogomo

I have been loving hats lately!!
But Elle—you don’t look awkward—it’s all just practice, right? (and I still hate modeling—if it were up to me, I’d just showcase mom & Nancy!! So I know how you feel!)

  • What a fantastic hat and bag that Nancy is wearing! Fabulous! I would love to buy a set like that! Your mother should start her own store. 😂😂😂😂 I ll bet you are very proud at your family!

    • Jodie Filogomo

My mom is quite amazing with her sewing talents!!
Thanks for the lovely compliment, Nancy. I’ll forward it to my mom and it’ll make her day!

  • dan

The three of you look lovely wearing a hat but today your mum is my very favourite : she is sooooo Cute!!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Isn’t she fabulous??
Thanks so much for the lovely words, Dan!!

  • You are goals!
Love all the outfits and how it perfectly matches the hat.

    Fancy indeed!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks so much!!

  • Teri

    Great post!

Also I really enjoy the fact you begin every post with a quote. I wanted to see your reference to the coat that matched those cute pumps and read the quote you used in 2014 from Shinichi Suzuki on that post. Being a violinist and music teacher, Suzuki had a huge influence on me because this was the music method my teacher used. I have never heard that quote but it made me smile.

    Have a great week!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Teri!
I was just thinking about it’s not only the words of the quotes that can have an impact on us, but knowing who said them can change how you look at the words. I just used one from Anne Frank–and knowing it was from an 11 year old who didn’t survive, just made the words so much more impactful!!
I’m glad this resonated with you!!

  • You all look fabulous as always but Charlotte is kicking it out of the park! I love her lady like old fashioned look! I would totally wear her whole outfit! Great post Jodie! Peace!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Isn’t she something, Cheryl?? She’ll be tickled pink to read your comment when I forward it to her!!

      • Cheryl Tucker

That dress is so awesome! I love her style!!!

  • Y’all look so cute! I have been trying to get better about wearing hats and actually just wore 2 last week and bought another one today lol! A good black fedora is always in style!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I have been so surprised at how much I love wearing hats lately!! It’s a good thing there are so many cute ones!!

  • Terri Webster Schrandt

OMG, love your mom’s hat…from the 60s?? Wow! So couture now! Rockin’ these hats!

    • Jodie Filogomo

My mom keeps everything for a long, long, time!! Trust me when I say—it’s going to be crazy cleaning out her house when the time comes!!! 🙂

  • I am a huge fan of a hat with an outfit! such a perfect touch to look! looking good ladies!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Kelsey!!

  • I love wearing hats – and I used to be one of those people who insisted hats didn’t look good on me! Now my hat collection is probably getting a bit out of control. I think wearing a hat is about having confidence, or at least pretending to have confidence, since we live in a world where most people don’t wear hats in their daily lives (other than maybe baseball caps, or at Kentucky derby parties!)

I love that your mom made her own tassel earrings, I was actually just in Joanns the other day looking at the tassels since the tassel earrings are so trendy right now, but I couldn’t find ones I liked.

    • Jodie Filogomo

I’m sure there are some heads that don’t look as good with a hat on it??? I know that my husband sure doesn’t look good in all of them—but for some reason, they are fine on me!! But then again, it’s probably like everything—there are some styles that work and some that don’t!!
How funny that you were on the same wavelength with the tassels!! I thought that was so brilliant—and I’m totally going to do that!!

  • Nancy

Love hats and all of these are great! I’m starting to wear hats more frequently and always to Red Hat events. I prefer to wear my hats more on the top of my head like you did Jodie however Nancy’s looks great further back on her head. I agree with everyone else’s comments re: Charlotte’s nude shoes. Here in AZ it’s the exception instead of the norm to dress up beyond tanks, shorts & sandals – so sad!

    • Jodie Filogomo

How fabulous that you’re wearing hats more now too, Nancy!!
It’s funny, because when my husband puts on a hat, he’ll put it farther back on his head—and it looks so funny—I’m always pulling it down for him!!
As for the casual wear—I feel like it’s everywhere now. Even here in Denver—you can go anywhere on any day and see jeans & t-shirts (it’s not quite short weather yet), and as much as I understand it—I fight it tooth & nail. Even if no one else is going to dress up–then maybe I’ll stand out more??

  • Laura

I love the tassel earrings your mom is wearing. You’d never know that hat is from the 60s! I love the way you all have dressed up your gorgeous hats!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Isn’t that such a great idea for those earrings, Laura? I’m totally going to steal that!!

  • Hats are one of my favorite accessories! They can really transform or complete an outfit. Your mother’s outfit is adorable! What a cute floral print for spring!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks tons Liz!!
I’m just now starting to really get into hats—I wonder why it took me so long? Ha ha!

  • Judy Gramith

Another fabulous post where all of you look just darling!
I love all of your accessories Jodie. The jaunty tilt in your hat shows a seasoned hat wearer I think. Your shoes look so cool!
Nancy’s hat and purse are so unique and beautiful! Charlotte makes some amazing items. These accessories go so well with the tunic. Those shoes will get a TON of wear!!!
Charlotte’s southern Belle is peaking out. She would fit in at the Kentucky Derby seamlessly. She is looking vertical svelte in this dress. “I just love me some Charlotte stylings!”

    • Jodie Filogomo

Aren’t you just the cutest ever, Jude?? That saying that you love Charlotte styling will just make my mom’s day/week/month!!

  • This post has everything: hats and shoes; restyled, rethought clothing; vests and pearls. Thank you for the links not only for shopping but back to previous posts we may have missed or forgotten.

I’m thinking of trying to draft a vest pattern for some long vests to fit my height. Two fronts and a back and facings, please ask Charlotte if she thinks that’s too ambitious?

    • Jodie Filogomo

I will certainly forward this to my mom for her advice Jean!! I’m thinking that a vest would be a great way to start, but I’ll let the master weigh in on that!! There’s probably some details that I know nothing about!!
Thanks for the positive feedback and your fabulous contributions yesterday!!

      • There was a day long, long ago when I did things like make bound buttonholes and other difficult feats. Now my sewing is fun projects like making lap quilts that have texture and trinkets, and tote bags from old denim jeans — things that require no precision.

  • Lesley Watson

I tend to wear my hats in the summer to keep the sun off my face. I ‘ll get on the band wagon and help you bring the hat trend back to Denver Jodie. Lets arrange a Hat Mob ( like flash mob?) Also you see lots of hats at the Paris Markets @ Aspen grove in the summer. I too love Charlotte’s outfit top to toe. Great advice about nude shoes. If you ever see one of the old Mary Tyler Moore shoes she wore nude shoes with almost everything.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Yippee!! Now there will be at least 2 of us in the city wearing hats!!
We haven’t been to the Paris Market in years—but what a great reminder—we should go and compliment all the women in hats!! Maybe once they get a ton of compliments…then maybe they will wear them elsewhere!!
      🙂 XOXO

  • You all look so great! I think hats are so fun. How well timed with the derby too. I wish we wore dressy ones more often. Love your mom’s dress and hat combo especially.

    Amy Ann
    Straight A Style

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Amy!! I wish I had planned this to post before the Kentucky Derby. We really don’t celebrate it much here in Denver, so I always forget about it until a couple of days before hand!!

  • donnanance

No cookie cutter outfits for you ladies! Your mom’s dress is so pretty. I used to have one similar to it, however with a lower neckline. Looove her shoes… Back in the day, I could get by with something like that…ha! Love Charlotte’s tunic and the coordinating hat and bag. Good colors for her. Your shoes just set off your dress (skillfully restyled by your mom). All the hats compliment the outfits. They could be worn to an event and not intrude on anyone’s space or block their view…i.e. graduation, wedding, any sort of fete. Back in the 90’s, I had a ton of hats, some with veils, the whole bit. I even wore gloves to church. Boy, those days are long done…flip flops and baggy pants are the norm these days. Your mom and I are closer in age and things have changed since we were young moms. I love looking at retro fashions on Pinterest. I’m not saying bring back pantyhose and torturing undergarments but a little class would be welcome. This is exactly why your blog posts are so important. No matter our age, we can look fabulous!

    • Jodie Filogomo

What a fantastic comment to read Donna!!
I know exactly what you mean about how times have changed—because even I think it’s true!! I remember when my grandma would get so upset because people would come to church in jeans, and I would say “at least they are coming to church, grandma”. But now I sound like her on many days. I look around and think what slobs people are dressing like (and I think to myself—now I know what grandma was feeling, ha ha)
I understand we all want to be comfortable, but is that more important than looking nice/respectful?? It’s such a conundrum!!
There are these 2 men that work at the bank in our grocery store–and they are always dressed so smartly. I said to them the other day that they should get all the other males to dress so nice (because you know what you see at the grocery store). But they laughed and said no. Because if they did that, then they wouldn’t stand out anymore!! Now that was interesting!!
So maybe we just have to realize that when we dress up in this casual world, we’ll be standing out among the crowd??

  • Each of your hats is so unique and they all look fabulous! That’s so cool your mom made Nancy’s hat – it’s gorgeous! Great choice going with nude shoes for your mum. And I LOVE your shoes Jodie. I have one hat I break out every once in awhile, it’s better suited for a day at the beach, as it’s pretty large and not the best for walking around in. I need to invest in one like yours! It looks like it would go with many outfits. 🙂

    • Jodie Filogomo

I would say that the hard things about hats, are they don’t travel that well. Sure there are a couple that bend & fold, but not most of them!! I could totally see why you don’t have a collection, Lindsey!! And it’s probably why I rarely take them on vacation!
Maybe we need to invent that??

  • Karen

I have to start off by saying that everyone’s shoes are fabulous in this post! And I love your hats! I’m especially partial to those with wide brims, but would wear any of these. I adore hats and love to wear them, but just don’t do it very often. I’m drawn to them when I’m shopping and will buy one, then get it home and realize that where I live, people tend to under-dress a lot, and hats are baseball caps or none at all. (Kinda backward in this little town!) I wear them more in the winter because I find I don’t stand out as much then, though people still aren’t wearing hats much even when it’s cold. But I love them, especially the ones with the large brims. The Kentucky Derby hats are amazing and I’d sure get something fabulous if I was going! : ) Your mom’s idea with the earrings is genius. What a great way to have fun with a trend without shelling out a whole lot of cash to do it! I think I’m going to have to borrow her idea. They are having a jewelry sale at work today and I’m going to run over and look for some earrings similar to yours, that I’ve been searching for. As for hanging on to things from the past, I rarely do it. I do closet purges on a more or less regular basis and donate a lot, so I don’t have many nostalgic items I’m afraid. The exception would be jewelry that’s been passed down. When I see the new/old styles coming back, I get out my photo albums and have a little trip down memory lane! Lots of good memories!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I really don’t see many people wearing hats around here either Karen. Well, sometimes a cowboy hat, but rarely!
But I’ve decided who else is going to start the trend if I don’t? And I’m really loving the variety of hats I’ve been seeing lately!! So I may stand out like a sore thumb—but at least I’m a fashionable sore thumb, LOL!!!
I’m like you about purging items. I may have one or two older things in the guest closet, but I’d rather give it away now, and buy it again in 20 years. I always figure, even when it comes back in style, it’ll be a little different, right?
