How to Dress Up Joggers for Women

Joggers for women may seem like it’s too young, but it’s not. It’s always a fun challenge to me to make our pieces more versatile than you think they could be. That’s why I chose this quote for our post. Being adventurous with clothing is actually quite safe because it’s not permanent. Yet clothing can make us feel powerful and fabulous.

Quote of the day: “You must do the thing you think you cannot do.” Eleanor Roosevelt

Therefore even though these joggers for women would be considered part of the athleisure wear trend, there’s no reason you couldn’t wear them for a dressy occasion too. We started off wearing them for casual with sneakers, and after that adventure, we changed them up for a nice lunch on the town.

When Deb wrote to me asking about ideas of styling her joggers with tops and shoes, she mentioned that she wore her pants with a pair of sandals that are wedges. Hopefully the 4 of us have shown how sneakers looked great with them too in the last post. And now with these outfits how other variations of shoes could work also.

Our friend, Lesley joined us for both of these jogger outfits, and even showcased how you could dress them up for the office last week.

And just this morning I was reading Kay’s blog, who was wearing her joggers very similar to how we wore them this day. It goes to show that these joggers are getting mileage from many women.

Why I Wore This Outfit

Since Rob didn’t like these pants on me, I figured maybe I could change the focus of the outfit to the top half with a print bow tie blouse. I also thought this was a good way to practice my print mixing skills.

To make the outfit seem more dressy, I added in a heel and a silver clutch. Even though I never used to think about my purses as part of my outfit, I’ve certainly changed my tune lately.

If you can’t imagine two prints on your body at the same time, then another way to sorta hide the pants would be with an interesting tunic. The neckline of this one would be a great focal point and I like that it’s longer in the back than the front.

Interesting Tidbit

When I bought these shoes about 4 years ago, I thought of them as mules. Yet one time when Rob and I were shoe shopping, he kept referring to my grey ankle booties. And I was adamant that I didn’t have a grey pair of grey ankle booties at the time. When we got home and he pointed these out to me, it was one of those “aha” lessons.

We tend to categorize the pieces in our closet as certain things and then don’t always see them another way. That’s why it’s always nice to have Rob shopping with me. Especially if he pays for my purchases…ha ha!

Why Lesley Wore This Outfit

Lesley at first thought dressing up her joggers was a bit of a challenge. Yet she does think that Colorado is rather casual and therefore this outfit would work for date night, brunch or even a play. I have to admit that she’s so right yet I think most places have gotten quite casual lately. Therefore these joggers for women can be worn many, many ways.

I always love how Lesley throws her scarf over one shoulder this way. She did this trick when we styled our outfits for a reunion too. Talk about easy peasy so you don’t have to worry about how to tie it. Because the Pashmina scarf is a knit, it tends to stay in place just fine. Then it’s also easy to wrap around your neck or shoulders when the sun goes down.

Black is always a great way to dress up any outfit. I think you could also incorporate some of the sheer over tops that are so popular right now. Or you could wear one of the embroidered tops to add some decoration without needing accessories.

Lesley has more than one of these Maruca Design purses. They are made here in Colorado locally, and have such interesting prints. The one she is carrying here can be a cross body bag or a clutch. She wore her blue one in our bright colors post earlier this summer.

Why Nancy Wore This Outfit

Nancy felt like this print kimono would add some flair to dress up her joggers. Even the top under the kimono is a silky top, and the mix of textures is something that makes this outfit very modern.

I have to give a shout out to Shelbee for her generosity in sending Nancy this kimono. Shelbee was closing down her online shop and out of the kindness of her heart, sent a kimono to all 3 of us. I wore mine in our summer brights post earlier.

I love the addition of the burgundy with this outfit. Yet if you are someone that isn’t as hip about kimonos or even a third piece, then a print swing top would look just as lovely. Not that you’d have to choose a print either. A solid red top with fun sleeves would be dressy also.

I love how Nancy added in a yellow bracelet with her outfit as a punch of color. Her joggers are really more of a warm tan in color, but you could almost think of them as a light yellow. So don’t be afraid to add in some accessories that are a whole new color to your outfit. It shows fun and creativity instead of always playing it safe with matching colors.

My mom also thought that a kimono would be a great way to dress up her joggers for women. She wore a column of yellow and then added the print of the kimono as the piece de resistance. But let’s just marvel at this kimono for a minute. It was actually bought as a large scarf and my mom cut and DIYed it to be this kimono.

The hat is the same one in the casual joggers post but she switched out the scarf around the brim to give it a different look.

Not only do I love mixing up the rules in regards to colors and categories, but also with materials. I know one woman commented that she never mixes textures of materials. Yet in my opinion, that’s an outdated thinking. So even though my mom’s joggers are a knit material, it would be easy to spruce them up with a silkier top.

For example you might love this swing top with the print only at the bottom. Just the white one of those tops have the print at the bottom. The other colors are all over print which would also be lovely. And don’t think that your print has to have a lot of yellow in it to look good. My mom’s jogger’s are light enough that they could be thought of as a warm beige. Don’t fall into the trap that I did with my shoes in the above story. Even our colors can look different if you have an open mind about them.

The necklace was made by Nancy as a project at her church. Nancy will tell you she’s not very creative, but she certainly is great at group projects where they walk you through the process. Even I have a necklace with the same design from that church function.

Tips & Tricks as Joggers for Women

Dressing up joggers for women is not much different than when we tried dressing up our jeans. Add some pieces on top that you consider fancy, and you’re good to go.

As for the shoe choices with these pants, I really don’t think there is a wrong choice. Needless to say it was still quite warm when we photographed these outfits, so we are all wearing exposed toe shoes. But trust me when I say that the closed toe versions would look just as good.

In fact, all of the shoes we showcased in our 4 Different Types of Business Casual Shoes would work with these joggers. In a way, your joggers are like an ankle pant because they stop usually at your ankles. So it’s fun to showcase your footwear that have fun details like buckles or embroidery. I’ll include a bunch below that I think would be perfect for the upcoming fall. I didn’t include sneakers since that’s exactly what the 4 of us wore in the last post with these exact same joggers for women.
