Dressing up your Summer Shirt 3 Different Ways

Quote of the day: “Nothing great in the world has been accomplished without passion.” Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

I know that most of the time, if I categorize an item I buy as casual, then that’s how I always wear it. That’s why this blogging exercise has been so good for me and my closet. I’ve found there are many times that a certain item can easily be styled in a totally different way. Just like with our summer shirts that we wore casually! Now we took the same tops and thought about a more dressed up occasion wearing the same summer shirt.

And I know that some women don’t wear skirts much anymore, so I had my mom even wear pants for this post!! It was also nice that Cindy, who I was able to meet in person since she lives in Denver, is joining us again!!

Cindy’s (50+) Outfit: Cindy wore her same men’s white t-shirt and this time spruced it up!

The addition of a black tulle maxi along with pumps and pearls create a gorgeous out to dinner look!!

Summer shirt transformed

Jodie’s (50+) Outfit: I took my embroidered summer shirt and tucked it into a pencil skirt.

This is one of my favorite skirts because it’s yellow and really makes me smile. The only thing I don’t love about it, is the fact that it wrinkles so easily! But I’m trying to embrace the wrinkles in my clothing as well as the wrinkles on my body! It’s all a good thing, right?

I felt like I had matched the clothing and shoes quite a bit, so I opted for some silver jewelry. I’m sure most of us have silver jewelry in our collections, but there’s always a chance to update them.

Not that there are a ton of different earrings, but there are the crawlers like these! Or the earring jackets are also something relatively new!

Embroidered summer shirt

Not that I would expect everyone to have blue and white shoes, but since I did, I decided to copy the colors from my summer shirt into my shoes!

The blue and white does seem very summery, kinda like the sea and sand! For those of you that prefer flats for the summer, then you might enjoy this pair! Or if sneakers are your thing, then these are super cool! Of course, summer really means the espadrille come out, so these are the shoes of the summer!

The reason I chose this outfit, is that we were going to Red Robin so both Rob & Nancy (the 60+ model) could get their free hamburgers since it was their birthday month!!

Make sure you check out this fabulous purse, because my mom (the 70+ model) actually made it!! Not only can she make and sew clothing, but she also creates other wonderful pieces!! I know I didn’t used to change out my purse much, but lately I’ve been trying to have more fun with these accessories!!

Nancy’s (60+) Outfit: For Nancy’s summer shirt outfit, we also dressed it up with a pencil skirt.

However, for Nancy’s look, we kept the shirt untucked. I was hoping since the shirt & skirt have the same silhouette, that the pair would look like a dress? The skirt is actually a wool blend, so I know Nancy doesn’t consider it for the summer months. Of course, I’d agree if you were hanging outside for the day, but if you’re going to a restaurant, the material might not matter as much!

Sixty Plus Woman & Summer shirt wear

Since we kept Nancy’s shirt up on her shoulders, we thought that a fun necklace wouldn’t be too much!! I have to admit I have an addiction with these statement necklaces!! To me, they can add so much bling and sparkle to even the plainest shirt!

The best part is that you don’t have to spend a ton of money on these pieces. Granted, they may not last forever since most times we get what we pay for, but they are fun! Check out a couple I found here, here and here that are all for under $25!

Summer shirt with pom poms

The other item that adds so much fun to Nancy’s summer shirt outfit is her shoes!

If you have a pair of floral shoes, then you might realize how many outfits they go with because of all of the colors in them. And your not limited to a certain style to sport floral shoes. For example, you could have a pair of sneakers, sandals, flats or mules!

Dress up the summer shirt with a skirt

I talked about Nancy’s pom pom shirt in the last post, but let’s talk about it again!! You may have noticed that off the shoulder shirts are huge at the retail stores, but most of them can be worn on the shoulders too.

We could have pulled the shoulders down on this shirt for Nancy. However, she’s not comfortable doing that, so we left them up! So consider that versatility when you are out looking at summer shirts. Like this one, could be worn both ways or Talbots even markets this shirt that way!!

Charlotte’s (70+) Outfit: And last but definitely  not least, my mom dressed up her summer shirt with a pair of white pants.

I’m working on a blog series about wearing pants for the dressy occasions since I had a reader ask about it! If you are one of those women who doesn’t wear skirts or dresses much, what are your thought about dressy pants? Is it more the material, color or shape that makes them dressy?

I was thinking that these could be very interesting for a dressy occasion, but I wasn’t sure if many women would wear them?

I really like the fact that my mom added a belt to the top to add a little interest to the outfit. Sometimes I feel like when we leave our shirts untucked, it can look sloppy? However, I hear many women say they don’t wear belts anymore because their waist isn’t what it used to be.

Yet looking at the bottom photo of my mom, I think the belt adds a nice peplum look to the top! I have gotten Nancy to buy a couple of skinny belts and she’ll wear them occasionally!

Summer shirt with belt

As for the other accessories in my mom’s outfit, I let her get by with matching them to the outfit!

I know, personally, I might have tried to incorporate another color into the look with my bracelet and earrings, but mom chose white for these goodies!! There are some very fun white bracelets I found when searching for a similar item for this one below!

Have you heard of the Bourbon & Boweties bracelets? I think they are so pretty especially when layered together with different ones of different colors!! I tried one on the other day, but it was too big for my wrist. Bummer!! But this marble like bracelet is calling my name too!! How can there be so many pretty baubles out there?

Summer shirt gets dressy with pants

As for mom’s shoes!! They are a pair of white pumps!! Which I just want you all to know are coming back in style! Of course, my mom had to add on a shoe clip for some extra bling!! Anyone else still have those accessories??
But back to talking about those white shoes, I have been seeing a lot of hype about white for the fall! Maybe it’s one of those rebellious ways to buck the rules that we all grew up learning. If you feel that streak of rebellion coming out, then I might tempt you with this pair or this pair!!

So what’s your idea of a summer shirt? I’d love to hear what you think and if you try to take it from casual to dressy!!

Thanks to one and all of you for your support. It means more than you know!

I would definitely be interested. Thank you so much.

  • Lovely summer tops! You all look cool and fresh! Alas! Summer is too short to wear all my summer tops! 🙁

    • I was just feeling the same way, Carmen. This morning had such a nip in the air—eeek!!

  • Nicole Mölders

Your mom’s earrings are so stunning. She proves that one can wear long earrings over 70 despite people often say one shouldn’t wear them over 40! Thanks for joining the Top of the World Style party.

    • Thanks Nicole!!
It is funny, how my mom will totally ignore certain “rules” about fashion and getting older, but other ones are in one ear and out the other!! I just need to get her from always wanting to match everything…haha!!

  • These are adorable and the prices are very reasonable!

    • I am quite the deal finder!! It’s an inherited trait…ha ha!!

  • I love that embroidered shirt, but what really makes your outfit sing is the shoes. Oh, and I adore Cindy’s outfit. The simplicity of the t against the tulle is inspired. #TeamLovinLife

    • Thanks Jo!! I am a shoeaholic…
And thanks for the wonderful word for Cindy—I forwarded it to her too!!

  • Oooh! I love all the color schemes you ladies have going on! I especially like yours, Jodie! And your mom’s top is gorgeous! And Nancy’s shoes are just too cute!!

    • Thanks Lindsey!! This was definitely a fun post to put together.
And thanks for including mom and Nancy in your compliments—they always love to read those!!

  • Love your quote of the day. So true! #teamlovinlife

    • Thanks Leanne!! I’m a sucker for a good quote!!

  • Love all 3 of your tops! The embroidery on yours is so pretty & I love the collars on Nancy & Charlotte’s

    • Thanks Michelle!! These tops are so much funner than a plain t-shirt, don’t you think? But it’s always so amazing to me how many plain t-shirts I see walking around!!

  • Love the outfits!!!! My go to summer shirt is a basic tee this year. haha. You all look lovely.

    • Thanks so much!! But a basic tee is a classic piece—that’s why they are basic!!

  • Melissa

You can never go wrong pairing yellow and blue! Your outfit is the prefect way to dress up your top this summer. I also love the way your mom belt her top, so chic!
I honestly don’t wear my skirts as mush as I should, thanks for some ideas 🙂

    • I’ve been trying very hard to wear more skirts and dresses this summer, Mel!! I figure my legs may not look great as the years pile on, so I might as well take advantage of it now!!

  • Nicole Mölders

Nancy’s shoes are calling my name.

  • Savvy Southern Chic

Jodie, I love the blue and yellow combination of your outfit. And I love Mom’s top belted!

    • Thanks Fonda!!
I was surprised at how good this top looked belted!! And mom will be so pleased that you liked it too!!

  • I love using shoes and accessories to dress up an outfit. They make such a difference! 🙂 #TeamLovinLife

  • I really like the contrasting blue’s of your outfit Jodie. I’m a huge fan of this style top this year. Styled perfectly xx

    • Thanks Laurie—the embroidery bug has bitten me too!! Now I just need to make sure I don’t indulge too much..eeek!

  • Kathy Marris

The blue and white embroidered is gorgeous on you Jodie. I seem to be a separates person and have a lot of tops and quiet a few skirts, shorts and varying length of pants. It’s so interesting to mix things up and see how they look together. #TeamLovinLife

    • I’ve always thought that separates give us so much more variety, Kathy!!
But there are times that I gravitate towards dresses just because they are easier!!
      Thanks Kathy!

  • We’re in the middle of a wet blustery Winter here in Oz and it’s lovely seeing all your fresh, bright colours and sunshine 🙂

    • Ahhhh…yes…the opposite seasons!! You’ll be happy to know that today in Colorado it’s raining, so I’m wearing jeans & closed toe shoes—ha ha!!

  • writeofthemiddle

Love all your shirts but oh I love that top of Nancy’s. I’m a complete sucker for pom poms! Love them! 🙂 #TeamLovinLife

    • I know what you mean, Min!!
Pom poms just make us feel young at heart!! I decorated one of my straw hats with them!!

  • Lots of fun in this styling Jodie and I love love love your yellow skirt outfit. No wonder it makes you smile. I am finding myself wearing skirts more these days, I used to live in jeans but it became so boring. I also like to mix up casual and more formal, including putting a formal top with a pair of jeans x

    • I think the same way, Jan!! It gets so boring to me to wear the same things all the time!! I know people will say “that’s your style”, but I think it’s way more fun to switch things up!!!

  • I love the ASOS shirt in your picture – though am plus-sized! I’m loving the interesting sleeves on shirts that I’m seeing here lately.

But yes I have very few clothes so tend to wear the same things casually that I wear for work and make changes by dressing them up a little – pairing them with something different or jewellery or nice shoes etc. #teamlovinlife

  • Laura

I like to switch up my shoes and go from a casual bottom to a dressier one to dress up summer shirts like you have here! Love the accessories you added too!

    • Thanks Laura!! That’s the magic of shoes, I think!!!

  • Judy Gramith

What a bunch of lovely ladies!! Jodie, your top looks great tucked into that cute yellow pencil skirt and your navy accessories are genius! I especially like your striped shoes!! Nancy’s navy and rose combo is an unpredictable one but those shoes make it perfect! (I love when that happens!) Charlotte’s pale yellow and white are just so softly feminine and pretty. I like the cinched waistline too!! She should show off her trim figure more often!

    • Thanks Jude!!
I always enjoy getting “dressed up'” because it seems so special!! I really liked how these outfits turned out for all of us!!

  • I love your moms belted look! The yellow is so pretty on her. And Nancys shoes are adorable! I love the yellow skirt you had and paired it with the blue/white top! Nice job ladies!

    • Thanks so much for including my mom’s in your wonderful compliments, Ruth!! I always make sure to forward those emails, so they can smile from them too!!

  • Rebecca Saffer

Your mom’s talents never cease to amaze me – what an adorable bag! You did such a nice job in making a casual blouse look more polished and dressy. I also want to mention that I love so many of Nancy’s necklaces and wonder if she makes them or buys them on her travels.

    • Thanks so much…my mom will love to hear that from you!!
As for Nancy’s necklaces—she has been collecting more everywhere she goes. Some on her travels, but some just around town!! I think I’ve finally made the accessory “bug” contagious—at least for her!!

  • Missy May

I must say, I love the combinations here. Bold and beautiful if you ask me. Awesome! 🙂

  • The styling is so well in all of these outfits!

    Enclothed Cognition

  • Girl… Everytime I see something yellow, I think of you! Love that skirt!

    • Now, isn’t that the sweetest thing ever?? Now we just have to get you wearing it?? Ha ha!!

  • Mireille

Love all 3 looks! Your mom looks really pretty in her outfit! Love the addition of the belt!

    • Thanks so much Mireille!! I love that my mom hasn’t given up on belts. Of course, why should she since she has over 100 (and you think I’m joking….)

  • I love all the accessories that polished these looks! Love your top Jodie and Nancy’s shoes are perfection.

  • jess

Jodie, I love that top of yours. One thing that lacks in my closet is a greater selection of blouses… ( im already looking for fall) Love the combo of blue and yellow, your moms yellow blouse ( is that a fav color?) and the combo of the floral shoes with the solids on Nancy. Very pretty!
    have a great day
    jess xx

    • I probably have too many blouses…ha ha!! Maybe we should swap?? 🙂
Not that I need anything, but I’d love to have more dresses—they are so easy to wear!!
Thanks for the wonderful words, and I made sure to forward this to both mom & Nancy. They always love to hear people’s thoughts!!

  • I do the same thing with clothes I see as “casual” or “weekend” clothes. I have a shirt very similar to your white one with the navy embroidery, so thanks for some inspiration on dressing it up! I will have to try it with a bright skirt maybe!

    • Thanks Shea!! It’s good to change things up—for our wallet, and probably our brains!!

  • All your outfits are so lovely! The colors are amazing and everyone looks completely comfy! Great post! Peace!

  • That yellow looks so fresh on her! it’s a tough color to wear but works on her.

    • Thanks Carol!! My mom loves her yellow in all things, so I think she’d make it work no matter what..ha ha!!

  • Queen of Rods

I especially like your outfit, Jodie. The colors and styling are great, and the shoes and bag are a nice touch 🙂

    • Thanks Janet!! I was probably the best dressed person at Red Robin, but it was a “date” so why not??

  • Your blue and white = my fave! Love the shoes with it all…just a perfect outfit!

Cindy’s combo made me recall when Sharon Stone turned glam upside down with her Gap tee and formal skirt.

    Love it all!

    And Red Robin…yummmmm.

    • Thanks Em!! Funny how we can remember a certain time or person with certain items!
The Royal Burger is my fave. I try to tell myself to try other ones, but I always cave in to ordering it time and time again—that egg just does it for me!!!

  • Living on Cloud Nine

The blue and yellow in these outfits is just making me smile! What a sweet combination on the sweetest and prettiest gals! Love all three of the shirts to pieces!

    • Thanks so much, Andrea!!
Summer is fun for these kinds of details!!

  • Karen

Great looks here! Cindy’s shirt looks completely different with the skirt and pearls, and the little bag! What a great idea! I was glad to get a closer look at your shirt, just love that! It looks great with yellow (yellow is my favorite color!). Great color combination! You mentioned the blue and white shoes, I’ve got them for summer, floral pumps. Love your striped shoes and that little bag your mom made is so cute and can obviously work all year! I’m with Nancy on the ‘off the shoulder’ thing. I know that is HUGE right now, but for me it’s just a tad too trendy and almost obvious. That probably doesn’t make sense. Like the completely destroyed jeans. Just too obvious, trying too hard maybe, to my eye. I like looks that just seem to come together and “happen,” not like you tried too hard. Nancy has done this with her skirt and top, it just works and comes together in a good way. The necklace, once again, really dresses it up. Your mom looks great in yellow! Her earrings are amazing, and I really like the heel on her shoes. I like the shape. When you look at the side view with the pants, it just finishes everything off perfectly! the belt changes the whole look of the top! Really works! For me, pants can be dressy whether they are flowing or straight. It depends on what you wear with them, and also the fabric they are made from. That said, denim can look dressy if you wear something really dressy on top with some great dressy shoes. I do like the way that works! If I was going to a really dressy event, I’d be in a dress. But if I did choose pants, I’d choose flowing with a more fitted top and a short jacket. And heels! I didn’t know white heels were ever “out” of style! I think one way to wear white all year, even if you still feel uncomfortable with it, is to choose winter white as a compromise. Like taking baby steps getting past the old rules (my mom still lives by those old rules and they are ingrained in my sister and I, but I’m trying to change my thinking!)

    • It is so hard to get past those rules, Karen!! I think it’s that thing that the things you learn when you are young stick with you?? But I have to admit, sometimes it’s easier to have rules. Then you know if you look the part or not??
I haven’t had a pair of white shoes is awhile, but I’ve been seeing them more and more!! I think like everything, there’s a ebb and flow!!
Thanks for all of the wonderful thoughts and words!! Reading your comments every day just makes me feel like we are sitting down for coffee and catching up!!

  • Amy K

Yep you are tempting me alright… those bracelets are so pretty! I love what all of you did with your tops! I love your blue white combination with the shoes!

    • Thanks Amy!!
I really fell in love with the Bourbon & Boweties bracelets when my friend was wearing them. I only wish they fit my wrist better—although maybe that’s a good thing that they are too big…ha ha!!
