Dressing up your Summer Shirt 3 Different Ways

Quote of the day: “Nothing great in the world has been accomplished without passion.” Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

I know that most of the time, if I categorize an item I buy as casual, then that’s how I always wear it. That’s why this blogging exercise has been so good for me and my closet. I’ve found there are many times that a certain item can easily be styled in a totally different way. Just like with our summer shirts that we wore casually! Now we took the same tops and thought about a more dressed up occasion wearing the same summer shirt.

And I know that some women don’t wear skirts much anymore, so I had my mom even wear pants for this post!! It was also nice that Cindy, who I was able to meet in person since she lives in Denver, is joining us again!!

Cindy’s (50+) Outfit: Cindy wore her same men’s white t-shirt and this time spruced it up!

The addition of a black tulle maxi along with pumps and pearls create a gorgeous out to dinner look!!

Jodie’s (50+) Outfit: I took my embroidered summer shirt and tucked it into a pencil skirt.

This is one of my favorite skirts because it’s yellow and really makes me smile. The only thing I don’t love about it, is the fact that it wrinkles so easily! But I’m trying to embrace the wrinkles in my clothing as well as the wrinkles on my body! It’s all a good thing, right?

I felt like I had matched the clothing and shoes quite a bit, so I opted for some silver jewelry. I’m sure most of us have silver jewelry in our collections, but there’s always a chance to update them.

Not that there are a ton of different earrings, but there are the crawlers like these! Or the earring jackets are also something relatively new!

Not that I would expect everyone to have blue and white shoes, but since I did, I decided to copy the colors from my summer shirt into my shoes!

The blue and white does seem very summery, kinda like the sea and sand! For those of you that prefer flats for the summer, then you might enjoy this pair! Or if sneakers are your thing, then these are super cool! Of course, summer really means the espadrille come out, so these are the shoes of the summer!

The reason I chose this outfit, is that we were going to Red Robin so both Rob & Nancy (the 60+ model) could get their free hamburgers since it was their birthday month!!

Make sure you check out this fabulous purse, because my mom (the 70+ model) actually made it!! Not only can she make and sew clothing, but she also creates other wonderful pieces!! I know I didn’t used to change out my purse much, but lately I’ve been trying to have more fun with these accessories!!

Nancy’s (60+) Outfit: For Nancy’s summer shirt outfit, we also dressed it up with a pencil skirt.

However, for Nancy’s look, we kept the shirt untucked. I was hoping since the shirt & skirt have the same silhouette, that the pair would look like a dress? The skirt is actually a wool blend, so I know Nancy doesn’t consider it for the summer months. Of course, I’d agree if you were hanging outside for the day, but if you’re going to a restaurant, the material might not matter as much!

Since we kept Nancy’s shirt up on her shoulders, we thought that a fun necklace wouldn’t be too much!! I have to admit I have an addiction with these statement necklaces!! To me, they can add so much bling and sparkle to even the plainest shirt!

The best part is that you don’t have to spend a ton of money on these pieces. Granted, they may not last forever since most times we get what we pay for, but they are fun! Check out a couple I found here, here and here that are all for under $25!

The other item that adds so much fun to Nancy’s summer shirt outfit is her shoes!

If you have a pair of floral shoes, then you might realize how many outfits they go with because of all of the colors in them. And your not limited to a certain style to sport floral shoes. For example, you could have a pair of sneakers, sandals, flats or mules!

I talked about Nancy’s pom pom shirt in the last post, but let’s talk about it again!! You may have noticed that off the shoulder shirts are huge at the retail stores, but most of them can be worn on the shoulders too.

We could have pulled the shoulders down on this shirt for Nancy. However, she’s not comfortable doing that, so we left them up! So consider that versatility when you are out looking at summer shirts. Like this one, could be worn both ways or Talbots even markets this shirt that way!!

Charlotte’s (70+) Outfit: And last but definitely  not least, my mom dressed up her summer shirt with a pair of white pants.

I’m working on a blog series about wearing pants for the dressy occasions since I had a reader ask about it! If you are one of those women who doesn’t wear skirts or dresses much, what are your thought about dressy pants? Is it more the material, color or shape that makes them dressy?

I was thinking that these could be very interesting for a dressy occasion, but I wasn’t sure if many women would wear them?

I really like the fact that my mom added a belt to the top to add a little interest to the outfit. Sometimes I feel like when we leave our shirts untucked, it can look sloppy? However, I hear many women say they don’t wear belts anymore because their waist isn’t what it used to be.

Yet looking at the bottom photo of my mom, I think the belt adds a nice peplum look to the top! I have gotten Nancy to buy a couple of skinny belts and she’ll wear them occasionally!

As for the other accessories in my mom’s outfit, I let her get by with matching them to the outfit!

I know, personally, I might have tried to incorporate another color into the look with my bracelet and earrings, but mom chose white for these goodies!! There are some very fun white bracelets I found when searching for a similar item for this one below!

Have you heard of the Bourbon & Boweties bracelets? I think they are so pretty especially when layered together with different ones of different colors!! I tried one on the other day, but it was too big for my wrist. Bummer!! But this marble like bracelet is calling my name too!! How can there be so many pretty baubles out there?

As for mom’s shoes!! They are a pair of white pumps!! Which I just want you all to know are coming back in style! Of course, my mom had to add on a shoe clip for some extra bling!! Anyone else still have those accessories??
But back to talking about those white shoes, I have been seeing a lot of hype about white for the fall! Maybe it’s one of those rebellious ways to buck the rules that we all grew up learning. If you feel that streak of rebellion coming out, then I might tempt you with this pair or this pair!!

So what’s your idea of a summer shirt? I’d love to hear what you think and if you try to take it from casual to dressy!!

Thanks to one and all of you for your support. It means more than you know!
