Floral for the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s: The Casual Version

Quote of the Day: “As a rule, he or she who has the most information will have the greatest success in life.” Benjamin Disraeli

I used to despise floral clothing because it was so prissy.  If you feel this way too, there are techniques to downplay the girlishness and yet show off the beauty of floral.  One way is to pair it with very casual items or contrast it with edgier elements.  In this post, I’ll show you how to do this for these same shoes, jacket and skirt.  The business version (here) and dressy version (here) show alternative ways to arrange these exact floral items.

50’s Outfit: Since these shoes are more of a brush stroke floral, they feel more artsy to me than girly.  Your shoes are an important detail in your outfit, yet realistically they don’t get seen as much since they are only about 1/10 the surface area compared to your shirt & pants.  Thus they are a great way to add some floral without being overbearing.

60’s Outfit: I paired Nancy’s floral jacket with her coated jeans (a feminine element with edgy element).  These jeans almost look like leather in certain lighting.  I think the bright turquoise blue also takes some of the spotlight away from the floral.

70’s Outfit: So how to make a skirt more casual and less girly?  Just put on cute pair of ballet flats, a t-shirt, a sporty cardigan, and a cotton scarf!  Does this seem too dressy for many of you?  I know the young kids would add converse sneakers!
