Hearing Loss Solutions with Cochlear Implants
I remember being a kid and asking the question “would you rather lose your sight or lose your hearing?” And as a kid we would all choose hearing. Yet I don’t think we really realize how life changing it is not to be able to hear properly.
Quote of the day: “Blindness separates us from things but deafness separates from people.” Helen Keller
I’m sure most of us know somebody who has experienced some hearing loss. The statistics are, according to the National Institutes of Health, that 1 in every 3 people 65 years or older has hearing loss and yet many people take no actions to correct it.
Hearing loss solutions have come a long way over these last couple of decades. And maybe you already know much of this information. I was contacted by Cochlear to be part of this #WakeUpCall campaign and thought the information would be very helpful to many of us.
I remember when my mom was starting to have issues with her hearing. And I had to twist her arm to get her to go with us to the hearing specialist. It wasn’t easy. Have I told you how stubborn my mother is? I blame the German part of her…ha ha!!
Yet once she got her hearing aids, she almost thanked me for making her go. And even said that many of her friends needed them too. She was much more aware of how hard it is to communicate with others who can’t hear well.
I know many people struggle with the idea of hearing devices for 2 reasons. One is because of the aesthetics although I think this should be a non issue. Heck, I wear glasses for my sight, and it’s really not any different than needing to wear a hearing device for your hearing.
The other reason seems to be because people feel “old” with them. Again, that just seems outright silly. We are getting old. And I truly believe that’s a blessing. I’ve had too many friends who can’t enjoy more birthdays.
But having something that REALLY helps our hearing is a technological advantage that we are lucky to have at our fingertips.
Hearing Loss Solutions
So while this is a sponsored post, I think it’s just as important to share with my audience as a great outfit.
The funny thing is I have a list of ideas for upcoming blog posts. And connecting with a hearing aid company was on that list. However cochlear implants are intended for people who are not receiving enough benefit from hearing aids as they are experiencing severe to profound hearing loss.
Personally, we met a man at my presentation about what to pack for the holidays who had these cochlear implants. And since I’d never seen them before, we talked to him and learned a lot of information from him. The interesting thing is I just saw a young girl at church who had these implants also. And I have recently read some articles on them.
So what is a cochlear implant? It’s an FDA-approved surgically implanted medical device that actually mimics natural hearing. A hearing aid tends to just magnify the sound.
This hearing loss solution is beneficial for those who have severe to profound hearing loss when their hearing aids are not enough.
Why is This Important?
I bet most of us don’t think much about losing our hearing. Yet it’s such a huge part of communicating with others. I’ve heard many friends explain why their mother or father don’t socialize as much. And it’s because they can’t hear when people are talking. So they end up feeling left out.
When Rob’s mom was alive, she definitely had hearing loss and did nothing about it. True, it makes for some great stories. Like the time Rob’s brother warned his mom that some music speakers were getting delivered (we are talking 4 foot tall speakers). And then when he came home, his mom said, “Tom, those sure are some big sneakers that got delivered.” We still laugh about it to this day.
While it’s good to laugh about these mistakes, it can be frustrating or just plain embarrassing. Which is why it could be so helpful to check out the Cochlear implant options.
